Note: I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I can’t give this book more than two stars in good conscience. If it weren’t for the interesting story line, I would’ve given it one star.
When I read the synopsis, I was very eager to read this book. YA, paranormal, and super powers – it’s exactly what I go for. But after reading the first page, I nearly abandoned the book all together. Grammar issues do really bother me, but it was more than that. I think what bothered me the most was being told something in the narration, then hearing the characters talk about it ad nauseam, especially minor details that don’t matter. The length was entirely too long for what actually happened, due to over-narration and over-wordy dialogue that, as others pointed out, sounds unnatural. The main character, Karis, is not likeable. She is a classic victim, and she doesn’t seem to progress at all by the end of the novel.
In its current configuration, I can’t recommend this book. After a line by line edit, a careful review of the dialogue by actually speaking the written words, and consideration for character development and motives, I might change my mind. This book has potential – I loved the powers and the school, but what I read feels more like a rough draft than a completed novel.
