Fitz and I have done some wild things, but waking up as newlyweds? Total disaster. It threatens to expose the one secret I've kept buried for years, the only secret I've ever kept from my best friend—that despite us both being straight, I think I'm in love with him.
When Gramps needs me to stay married to lock in my inheritance, I'm terrified my feelings for Fitz could destroy everything we have.
Fitz
To the world, I'm the glitter-bearded, onesie-loving quirky vet. Sure, that's part of who I am, but it's not the whole picture. Only one person truly knows me—Muir. When he tells me he needs us to stay married so he can keep his grandfather's house, it's a no-brainer. Of course I'll help him out.
The real question is: why does staying married to my best friend feel so right?
Absolutely adore these two MCs. They were so much fun to follow as they realize how they feel about each other. They are both super quirky which I absolutely adored about them!
Maybe not as engaging as book 1, but still a solid 3,5 stars for me.
A double GFY, life-long friends to lovers, some quirky relatives and cheeky friends … and two guys who get drunken-married ‘by accident’.
This is no doubt a light and happy romance, the main ‘issue’ being two guys who never fancied men processing their attraction to each other and building an emotional and physical relationship.
I liked that they talked (mostly) about their fears, worries and what they want, but found certain ideas/thoughts etc a bit repetitive at times. There were other minor niggles, but …
A very light and easy read. (And I do commend the person who picked the covers for this series!)
4,5 stars. Imagine: two best friends, both vets, both work at the same clinic, both propose to their girls at the same time, both get rejected, but still end up married… to each other! That’s how they woke up. WTF happened?
Drunk happened. The strange thing about it all is that both guys aren’t that sad being dumped. They just go on with their lives, they have each other, right? Right! They really don’t need anyone else.
Sooo, married and how further is the question.
It’s not the first time Muir feels strange things when he looks at Fitz, the guy is hot. Muir’s gramps suggested keeping the marriage alive, this way Muir can inherit Gramps’ house.
“Life is as simple or as complicated as you want to make it, Muir.” Wise words Gramps, wise words.
So Muir confesses to Friz about his feelings. Will Friz freak out and run? Ha! As if!
Without spoiling more about the story, I’ll just keep it at it’s not a magical fairytale where they sealed their future after one kiss, it’s a process, and that’s the charm of this story! Btw, the people around them are as crazy as Muir and Friz are.
“I’ve always been told I’ve got a big mouth. Glad to be finally putting it to good use.”
It was such a fun story, with a great sense of humor, sweet, and s€xy. Two lovable characters who deserve all the love! The story had even some tissue moments. The whole story is awesomely written, a joy to read!
It was very sweet to see these two friends turn into something more. I think that the only issue I had with their relationship was the immediate acceptance of their sexuality felt a little too easy. Neither one of them questioned it, and it seems strange that they would live one way for 30 years and have a huge change and accept it so easily, not thinking twice. Overall, it was a fun read.
But with Muir, I can feel forever. I want it. I think about it. I imagine what it could be like. With Muir, I'm in it for the long haul, baby. - Fitz

My Opinion: This was so cute and I loved it. A little slow for my taste but I’m a fated mate, insta-love, high heat kind of gal. We got to see a lot of M & F through the story and be right alongside them as they figured out their feelings for each other. Sid/Gramps, UGH. What a great character, I loved him. F’s parents?? OMG LOL. I was so happy M stood up to his Mom/Sally and I really hope this is a turning point in their relationship. So much pain, but also so much love. These two were destined to be and I am so happy their ex girlfriends did what they did.
Because I'm sure of this. I'm sure of us. I want to be with Muir. Forever. - Fitz
3.75 stars for the narration, 3 for the story - 3.5 stars
This is a low-to-no angst story about two long-time best friends, Fitz (the titular quirky vet) and Muir, who, after their girlfriends turn down their marriage proposals, go on a massive bender and wake up married - to each other.
Interestingly, they decide not to rush to get a divorce/annulment - especially as Muir's grandfather has a clause in his will that means he can inherit his house without his estranged mother being able to contest it. (I have no idea if that's real, but it's actually not a massive plot-point and seems just thrown in at random, as though it IS going to be major... and then isn't.)
The story is mostly about their coming to terms with their changing feelings for one another / realising that the feelings they've always had for one another denote more than friendship, and about their accepting their new reality as a queer couple. Neither of them freaks out, their friends are all "oh, you guys always acted like an old married couple anyway", gramps is delirious with joy and the people of the small outback town of Scuttlebutt are all supportive. Which is exactly the way life should be, but sometimes isn't.
Rupert Channing delivers a good performance, although sometimes I was hard pressed to work out whose PoV I was in (the story is told in alternating PoV chapters) because his voices for Fitz and Muir were so similar, and I often had to rely on dialogue tags to work out who was speaking in their scenes together. But his delivery of the humour and emotions in the story is good, and he clearly differentiates between the secondary characters - it's a good performance, but I'd have liked there to have been more distinctive voices for the leads.
This one sets up the next book in the series, which is clearly going to be an age-gap romance between the owner of the vet practice and his bestie's son, who works there. I might round out the series and listen to it -I'll decide when it comes out.
If you're up for a low-conflict story in which the leads communicate well, and are usually on the same page about their relationship (they've known each other for twenty years and have been practically in each other's pockets for most of that time, so you'd expect them to know each other well!), set somewhere other than the US, then The Quirky Vet might be right up your alley. It's funny and warm, but I have to admit that I was kinda bored on and off.
I listened to the Audible edition of this, but there's no Audible Audio edition listed, thanks to GR's new policy of using a bot to import data for Kindle and Audible editions. Of course it isn't working properly, and GR librarians now can't add them. FFS.
Starting 2025 badly. This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. If I had to read one of them calling the other “mate” one more time I was gonna pluck my eyelashes one by one. The way this felt so obviously written by a woman for women made me cringe every step of the way.
Muir and Fitz are veterinarians in the small Scuttlebutt town in the outback. It nearly 20 years since they first became best friends when they were 10 years old. Just about the time that Fitz lost his twin brother in a swimming accident. Since then Fitz tries to be everything to his fabulous parents who sound like a couple of happy hippies.
Muir, wasn’t so lucky in the parent stakes, his Dad died when Muir was a young child and his mother appears a cold, mean spirited woman who doesn’t connect with him at all. Muir has been raised by his paternal grandfather.
During a short holiday break in Brisbane on the Gold Coast, Fitz and Muir get so drunk that they end up in a situation that neither of them know how to handle.🥵
I’m loving this series set down under in Australia, in a town full of lovely people who let people be their own true self without batting an eyelid.
Very sweet story, and I’m ready to get stuck into ‘The Grumpy Vet’, Ryde and Linus need to explain what is going on between them.

This was an enjoyable story of the two men who were best friends and married while drunk but were able to explore the love between them to see if it was more than just friendship. I loved Gramps who was such a character. This was a heart warming story story which made me smile. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
What a nice book. Fitz and Muir have known each other since childhood, and when both of them are dumped by women, they find each other - boy, do they ever. They get married at an all-night wedding parlor and, well, they grow into it, as a committed couple.
'The Quirky Vet' (Vet Shop Boys Down Under #2) written by Casey Cox, (Audible) narrated by Rupert Channing
Cute MM-romance series featuring veterinarians in the outback of Australia. For some reason I think I liked the first book a bit more, but since it's been awhile since I read it, I can't recall why? (sorry; I know authors and other readers like reasons, but I'm fresh out)
That said, I appreciated the way that these long-time best friends took care of each other, both emotionally and physically, almost like they could read each other's minds. I was pleased that there was no fake, forced breakup scenario before the finalé get back together, like there is in so many "romance" novels. Occasionally there's a legit reason, but mostly it's one or the other character pulling a big hissy fit over a misunderstanding and blowing it all up! (ugh)
Anyway... Even though best friends to lovers is a familiar trope, there are several quirky and fun surprises throughout this storyline to keep the interest up, and not just in a salacious way. There's also a few seriously sad and heartbreaking moments, as well.
I did like the whole dynamic between Muir and his grandpa; I really liked his grandpa! That's the ideal for family interactions, based on deep love and caring! Unlike that walking narcissistic cruel bomb of his mother who has made his life a living hell since he was a child, and even now can't stop trying to meddle in his life! I'm glad he's been living with his grandpa for a while, since she's been in & out of his life, parading a circus of men throughout, for years!
Muir's & Fitz's friends are great, too, being both silly and serious as the occasion calls for, and always supportive.
Looking forward to reading the next in the series!
The Quirky Vet (Vet Shop Boys Down Under #2) is Muir’s and Fitz’s chance of a happy ending. The two best friends have been in love for getting on for twenty years having met at school without really understanding how they feel about each other. They have supported each other through good times, crazy times and bad times. They end up married to each other as a result of a marathon pub and club crawl following their girlfriends turning down their joint marriage proposals before breaking up with them. As neither can remember it happening the story follows them as they come to term with it all. By coming to term with it all I mean accepting they have feelings that go beyond friendship on many levels.
There are happy and sad moments ahead of them and a ton of joy too. Being book two in the series means there are characters from the previous book that really benefit from having read book one. It’s not a real problem as the focus is on Muir, Fitz and those who matter most to them. They are great characters and deserve their happy ever after. An enjoyable read with some great banter and other stuff lovers get up to.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Second in Cox’s series about the men working in a veterinary office in rural Scuttlebutt, Australia. Fitz, a TikTok star known for outrageous outfits and practical advice about animals, and Muir, Fitz’s best friend, hatch a plan to simultaneously propose to their respective girlfriends. The book begins as the two friends are going pub to pub, drinking heavily in the wake of both being turned down and dumped. The next morning they wake up in the same hotel, the same bed, with identical rings on their left hand ring fingers …
Cox deftly employs several tropes in new ways here, the best friends/workplace/hurt comfort plus accidentally married, are all well known. Then Cox adds in a dual bi-awakening. Other “accidentally married” plots I’ve read have had both, or at least one, being gay. The “save the family farm” trope almost seems to go too far – but Cox makes it work. There’s plenty of humor, as Muir and Fitz slowly move toward each other in a romantic way, and Fitz’s parents exuberantly celebrate. (Warning: there’s a scene with the parents which may require brain bleach…)
P 3/5 the plot was nice, if simple. It felt a little lackluster when the mom didn’t make a fuss about the house when that was the whole point of them staying married, and some scenes felt unnecessary (hated the while tiktok thing) but still solid E 3/5 i enjoyed myself while reading this. Im not coming back to it nor do i have the urge to read anything else by this author, but it was a pleasant read A 3/5 easy to read, nice flow, but not very memorable writing C 4/5 loved both Muir and Fitz (except for the tiktok thing) but some of the things i found most interesting about them were not really explored. Muir did stood up to his mom but the outcome of that was lackluster and the whole brother personality thing with Fitz was mentioned but never really explored H 2/5 the reason why heart is lower than anything else is because i think if this story had gone a different direction… i would have loved it so much more. I felt i read a book about friends that end up dating, instead of friends who fall in love 15/5 3
This was a really cute story between Muir and Fitz. Dumped by their girlfriends after a double proposal, these two best friends get trashed and then somehow wake up married. I'm really intrigued about some of the details from when these two wake up but we don't get much of that story. Instead, it moves on from there with these two guys trying to figure out what to do about their situation. I love how these two are already incredibly close, which both does and doesn't make it easier to talk about their feelings. This is super low angst and even the built up confrontation with Muir's mother is a bit underwhelming. This is perfect for the times you need something full of wonderful characters with a bit of spice (it's fairly low heat overall) and some decent amount of feels. I can't wait to see what's next for this wild bunch!
Cute story! Easily lovable main characters. Both MC find out they got married together during a night of drowning their sorrow for being dumped by their girlfriends after proposing to them. even when being drunk on that fatefull night a perfect stranger could see that Muir loved romanticaly his best friend... So they were both dense, but once they wake up married, their outlook tips slightly. A few days later, they decide to explore their new relationship. With their family and friends, especially Muir's grandfather Sid supporting them. Great story! Loved that quirky vet could be silly & give instructive videos on Tiktok to share how to live & care for animals.
Watch the last drink. Muir and Fitz have been best friends for years. Muir and Fitz are straight. They tried a double proposal on Valentine's Day to their girlfriends, Erin and Maisey, both got shot down. Muir has been secretly in love with Fitz for years. Fitz is sassy, outgoing, ripped, walks tall and owns who he is with all his quirks. The men spend their disappointment drinking and doing a club crawl, then at the end of the day end up married. Muir and Fitz are delightful men. Fun story trying to figure out the what and why. Good flow, totally chill family. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
'Fitz is my best mate. We're both straight. Those two things automatically rule out any possibility of anything more… Don't they?'
I really loved this book. It was a very fun, sweet, best-friends-to-lovers romance. I loved both Muir and Fitz. I thought they were absolutely adorable together. In spite of waking up to find themselves married after a very drunken night, they can still tease each other and joke around- and more importantly- have an open conversation. And even parts of that made me laugh out loud. I love the bond between them and couldn't wait to see how things worked out. I really hope this becomes an audiobook! It would be so much fun to listen to! 5 stars.
Two best friends that definitely have their priorities right. They know they’ve done something they can’t just make go away instantly and they know they’ve done something and need to protect their friendship so they talk like adults and figure out how to move forward together. The basis of their friendship is what pulls them through and helps them see what everyone else already did. Great book!
It is way way better than book one. I loved Muri and Fitz together! The connection and communication were spot on. ❤️ 💥 Life-long friends to Lovers 💥No third-act breakup
I hated all the T. Swift references. You are idolizing a persona constructed by PR firms and the media. I also hated the mention of high schoolers(children) playing at the pride parade on the same page as Fitz's parents wearing assless bondage wear... it is creepy.
This wasn't as light and fluffy and cute as I thought it would be. It had some serious topics: death of a parent and sibling (in the past) and death of a grandparent (present). It was quite sad at times.
Muir and Fitz were both likeable guys. They'd been best friends forever, but things had never turned romantic. All that changed after a night of drinking, when they woke up and found out they'd gotten married.
I enjoyed the banter between Muir and Fritz. They have been best friends for nearly thirty years and are discovering that they're having other feelings for each other. It takes them a while to truly discover that they're meant for each other, but it's time. The two things that bothered me were that there was too much inner mind thinking, especially when they're together. Come on, this isn't a screenplay for a movie or a TV show. The second thing was that it was a little slow.
They make a great couple & the idea is fun & sexy & all that you want from an MM friends to lovers & then, well, quicker than then, husbands. However, it didn't engage me quite the way "The Flirty Vet" did. The story doesn't quite have the same depth & felt a little inevitable. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it & you're after a light read filled with love, "The Quirky Vet" will satisfy that craving for true passion.
I have mixed feelings. It’s not that it’s bad. I liked the concept of best friends that wake up married.
What I didn’t like is that these two characters were so similar that I couldn’t tell who was who. I ended up skimming a lot because of it and lost interest in reading the next book in this series.
Muir and Fitz were the absolute sweetest. I just loved how well they knew each other, looked out for each other, and easily accepted the transition from friends to more. Fitz’s parents were hilarious, and I loved Grandpa Sid too. Low angst, medium-high heat, HEA.
The Quirky Vet is the second book in the Vet Shop Boys Down Under series, each can be read as a standalone but I think is better in order. This is a double bi-awakening, accidently married, best friends to lovers read about Fitz and Muir. I loved the story and the wonderful characters.
This is a great addition to the series. I loved Fitz and Muir’s story, it was sweet, fun and emotional, with low angst and heat. It’s terrific to have a tale set in Australia and I highly recommend it.
Setting: Australia Best friends and co-workers, Fitz and Muir, wind up accidentally married to each other after getting double-dumped by the women they proposed to.
Oh, what a fun book this was! Smooth reading, great cast, can't wait for the next one!
