Objectively, this is a very solid volume of JoJo's, but I'm getting a little fatigued. I hoped Stardust Crusaders was on an upward trajectory, but honestly, it hasn't been GREAT in a while, when compared to its contemporaries. Still a lot of fun, and this arc had some good villains in it, but the monster of the week formula gets too far away from what I understood to be the potential of stands as a plot device. Polnareff has had a good arc, and this volume has some somber goodbyes, but as with the other arcs, I've become more curious and excited about Diamond is Unbreakable as I near the end of Stardust.
This volume was GUT-WRENCHING (but also a little funny). Jotaro/Joseph vs D’arby the Younger is hilariously well-done, and Iggy, Polnareff, and Avdol vs Cool Ice shreds me to pieces. Losing Avdol and Iggy both HURTS and Polnareff being pissed that he didn’t save them instead is so sad. It’s such a good battle tho. This is a perfect lead up to the final volume of Part 3!!

I LOVED this volume. The fights were more intense, creative, and wild. I surprised myself by actually getting emotional at some moments. These characters are the best in the series so far and I’m so excited for the final battle with Dio!
Started this volume absolutely giddy since the stand battle with D’arby the younger is legitimately so iconic and ended the volume with real life tears on my face. The video game battle concept is so camp and iconic and D’arby’s doll collection is so horrifying but so on brand. Kakyoin was serving face while racing cars, and he even got to have a random emotional back story in the middle of the game. The REAL comedy, however, comes from Jotaro playing his first ever video game and just gaslighting the shit out of D’arby with the help of his unhinged grandpa. This is the content Jojo should be all about. God tier stuff. The latter half of the volume has me crawling into holes sobbing. Avdol’s death hit harder here than in the anime, but Iggy’s was the opposite (though I was legitimately crying for the last like chapter or two). Polnareff is an asshole but he’s also my swagerific king. I still think Araki making me care about Iggy practically immediately before having him die a tremendously violent and horrific death is some truly evil behavior. RIP my boys but still absolutely DREADING the final volume.

Fuck I was so ready to give this volume 4 stars instead of 5 for killing off Avdol so early and officially condemning us to a world of Polnareff supremacy, but the ending of it really hit me in the feels out of nowhere and I caved. So, I ended up compromising and taking a star away from volume 2 since that's the one that began Polnareff's reign of terror over the parts screentime.
You really get the best of both worlds Jojo's wise in this one, with the younger D'Arby fight being one of the peaks in the part of Jojo's shitpost comedy shifting right into the tragic and horrifying Vanilla Ice fight. While I remembered how good that last one was, I actually forgot how much pure joy I get out of watching Jotaro goof around with a baseball video game.
That all being said, while I recognize and can appreciate the whole schtick of Polnareff constantly losing people he cares about or whatever, I think personally I would have rather had the resolution to that sort of theme be him finally sacrificing himself for Avdol instead of it being the other way around again because now it just feels like anyone will just die to keep this fucker alive and I hate it so much. And while part of why I feel that way is because I'm tired of the solo Polnareff content, I can also see how the fact that Polnareff being basically the actual MC based on screentime means that he was the more natural choice for who to choose to keep alive, so idk I guess I'm just bitter.
Quote of the Volume:
"I bet you'll use your right fist... L-left fist? ... B-b-b... BOTH fists?"
"YES! YES! YES! YES!... YES!"
"ARE YOU GOING TO "ORA ORA" ME?!"
"ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA!!!"
- D'Arby The Younger and Jotaro Kujo

This is a massive improvement on the last volume (not hard). The gang have finally made it to the manor house which Dio has made his base. Do we get the final confrontation between the Jojo brigade and Dio? No of course not but we do get to see a lot of Dio and I think we are finally circling the finish line. The volume is split into two sets of chapter the first of which made me think a lot of 'Ready Player One' but obviously Jojo came first. It was an interesting call back to a former adversary and I like the little snippets we got of the relationship with his brother. The twist was a bit of a let down but I didn't see it coming so it did its job. The second set of chapters is pretty much all action all the time. A lot happens but I don't know if I can trust what we have been shown. We are coming to the end so it might be real this time. The Stand that we are up again in these chapters is really good and seems pretty much unbeatable. It was great. A really great volume. With only one lest for Part 3 I can't wait to see how it all ends.
i'm reading this bc i'm too depressed to watch the last few episodes of the anime. i KNOW how it ends but i'm not emotionally prepared to finish. anyway, this volume's pretty good! i adore the video game montage!
i think this was the most stressed i've ever been when reading part 3,,, but in a good way,,, i guess.
Knocked off a star for Iggy and Avdol each cause they were done SO DIRTY! Especially Avdol. Other than that, it was a solid volume. I really like Vanilla Ice's character design.
Masterpiece. Mainly in writing. Although SC is also Araki’s art high-point as the character designs are unique and expressive. After SC, these aspects decline steadily. His backgrounds have always been bad — cluttered and lifeless.
Two fights here, with very different tones. The first is centered around video games and pits Darby’s younger brother against Jotaro, Joseph, and Kakyoin.
SPOILER
This is a light-hearted, fun battle with two games. The first is a racing game. Despite a brilliant effort Kakyoin comes up short and is turned into a creepy-looking doll reminiscent of Coraline. The second is a baseball game. Joseph and Jotaro are able to triumph by trickery as Joseph uses hermit purple to secretly control the game.
Both games cover several suspenseful chapters and are a masterclasses in storytelling. Araki keeps the pressure high and the outcome in doubt with back and forth struggle. The enemy stand user is no pushover, and makes the heroes sweat until the end.
The second stand battle is completely different, and the abrupt emotional transition from fun and games to mortal combat heightens the shock. Avdol is gone in the blink of an eye, his last act one of heroic self-sacrifice. From there Iggy and Polnareff battle for their lives. They refuse to surrender or flee or wait for rescue. They give the battle everything they have. Both of these two are amazing characters and my favorites in the entire JoJo saga.
There is one more chapter before the grand finale that shows Susie Q visiting Holly. This functions to remind readers of the stakes and the motivation for hunting Dio in the first place. The chapter has a couple cool character moments that again highlight Araki’s skills in character and suspense.
Susie’s nervous chauffer unexpectedly dispatches an angry yakuza goon with a single kick. The apparently flighty, absent-minded Susie reveals that she knew all along about Holly’s peril. The relentlessly upbeat Holly forces a smile when she sees her mother, despite lying at death’s door.
Was hype for the finale but wasn’t ready for what was to come. Golly. Read the latter half with bated breath.
D’Arby the Younger is another example of the goofy, almost sportive villains that the Stardust Crusader’s have had to take on over and over. If you told me that in the home-stretch of a vampire revenge story, the heroes would have to trounce the villains with a game of Sega’s Grand Prix, I’d tell you that story sucks. But there I was, eyes wide, waiting to see who would spend their limited boost bar coming around the final corner of Grand Prix map no.1 on the box television.
Oddly enough, the video game chapters were great for character development. Kakyoin gets some much needed shine rising to the occasion, and the Joestar bloodline finally starts working together in a tangible way. Breakthrough’s all around.
The Polnareff subplot is again, far and away more dark and more violent than the Joestar’s. Ice Cold (Vanilla Ice?) is a needed return to scarier, menacing villainy. There’s no jokes, gags or punchlines, and there’s no clever way around the Cream Stand’s devilish powers. It’s a more primitive fight for survival than most of Part 3’s ludicrous battling and it completely changes the tone of the story. I was aghast when Polnareff’s ending was teased. Just as stunned to see two party members go. Polnareff gets a brief moment to reflect and it hits hard with the sudden changes.
The series has done a good job of making death feel right around the corner so far, but now it feels like it’s in the room. DIO’s menacing grows each chapter and I’m really excited to dig in.
I’ve watched JoJo Part 3 three times in anime form, and now I’m experiencing the story for the fourth time as a manga. Volume 9 is one of the best for me, because we’re already in the finale of the story, and in my opinion, it has the best and most exciting battles. Sure, we’re still finishing the fight with D’Arby from the previous volume, but it still shows the relationship between Jotaro and Joseph. The same goes for Polnareff , Avdol, and Iggy, where actions speak louder than words. This has always been the best part of the anime for me, and it’s the same in the manga.
Another plus for me is that there’s a chapter with Suzi Q that wasn’t in the anime, and here it’s shown, showing how much she believes in Joseph and Jotaro. Now all I have left is to read Volume 10 and finish the manga version of my favorite series.
The D’arby The Gamer fight is fun, it’s a better rehash of an earlier fight than Hol Horse/Boingo was. It’s fun and does a new thing with the same premise. But the star of this show is the Vanilla Ice fight. Everything about Polnareff and Iggy’s characters comes to a head, and it becomes pretty fucking dire. The action is great and Ice is set up as a damn great villain, he’s genuinely dangerous and terrifying. This whole fight gets your heart pumping, and the outcome is way more bitter than sweet. It’s such an amazing sequence, I said in a previous review that D’Arby the Gambler was the peak of Stardust Crusaders but I’m now of the opinion that the Vanilla Ice fight is better. A fantastic setup for the final fight against Dio.
The gang finally reaches Dios lair, where they meet D'ARBYs brother. Kakyoin, Jotaro, and grandpa Joestar get caught in a trap set by D'Arby the Younger. Much like his older brother D'Arby likes to take the souls of those he defeats but he puts their souls into dolls. Kakyoin loses and becomes a doll, it's up to Jotaro to win again. When D'Arby is defeated a new more powerful opponent appears while Avdol, Polnareff, and Iggy wait for the others. The new opponent is defeated in the end, but the cost was Iggy and Avdols lives.

I love the D’Arby arcs. This one provides not only humor and high stakes, but a hint of nostalgia too. Instead of poker, the younger D’Arby steals souls through the old video games of the late 80s. Again I have to marvel at how easy it is to follow the flow of the art. Other than that, we are now nearing the end of the Stardust Crusaders, and there are some conclusive climaxes as they enter the lair of Dio.
Yeah... It's dragging on a bit. I liked the concept of the two stand users introduced (well technically three). The second section was more suspenseful than the first. I really admire Araki's willingness to experiment with different art styles. Also I really liked old Suzy Q's design and now I want to see JoJo's Elderly Adventure.
I finished reading this whole part sometime in the summer, but I don't know when. I know it is a very popular opinion, but Part 3 is certainly my favorite. I am a huge Jotaro Kujo fan. Anyway, folks who haven't read Part 3 are sure to enjoy it if they have enjoyed Part 1 and Part 2.
Fight with Cool Ice was like defeating an especially brutal boss in videogames, just before an even more challenging one in the form of a final boss (Dio here). Too bad Polnareff didn't have a healing potion at hand.
For maximum enjoyment see the anime version of the fight as well.
