In the gripping thriller "The Cold in the Black," a group of off-worlders are trapped deep within a treacherous alien mountain, as a whirling blizzard rages outside, cutting off all access to the outside world. As the temperature drops, tensions fester within their ranks, and alliances are formed and broken, revealing hidden motives.
Paranoia sets in as they navigate through the eerie corridors, haunted by a monstrous looming threat and the ever-present danger outside.
It’s a riveting, fast-paced suspense thriller that explores the limits of the human will to withstand the call of the void as they face the unforgiving forces of nature and the demons within.
Andres Chavez studied Philosophy, Psychology and English Literature but wished he'd studied music instead because it sounded like a lot more fun. He somehow reads too much and not enough. He primarily writes To Do Lists he never finishes and doodles on unsuspecting scraps of paper. "The Cold In The Black" is his first novel.
Beware those nights, When the void pulls more. When the call sounds sweeter than before. Those nights when the black grows heavier. The walls feel closer, and the room feels emptier. When that feeling starts to fester, starts to boil. Finding the cracks on your skin, Ripping through the seams, To bleed out onto the floor. Those nights when the void pulls more. When the call sounds sweeter than before. You must fight, rage, and set yourself ablaze. Burn through the black into a new day.
The Cold In The Black: Sci-fi Dystopian Thriller is a science fiction thriller/horror novel and the plot revolves around a conspiracy to steal a shipment of Kyvian crystals and a data package from a mine off a nearly uninhabitable mountainous alien planet smothered by an unending atmospheric blizzard.
This started out with a pretty solid plot, and I was looking forward to the inevitable treachery and betrayal and the ultimate survival against the elements, but the characters weren't given an introductory period, so I ended up finishing this book the same way I started it: stuck in the void with complete strangers. From beginning to end, I had no idea who anyone was. There was a big fight scene and people were getting stabbed, punched, shot, kicked and it was complete pandemonium because I had no idea who any of the people were or which group they belonged to. People were dying, and I, the reader, was observing all this with a mental image of Patrick Star screaming at the top of his lungs WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE????
"The Cold in the Black" is an absolute thrill ride, set on a freezing alien mountain with a crew trying to outwit the cold, each other, and whatever's lurking in the shadows. It's fast-paced to the point of being frenetic, sometimes feeling a bit too jumpy, like you've missed a step or two. But, wow, does it keep you on your toes with twists and high tension. The worldbuilding is sleek and minimalist, which I dig because it keeps the focus tight on the characters and their survival drama. And speaking of characters, their development is spot-on—no fluff, just the raw stuff that makes you care about them amidst the chaos. Sure, it gets a bit hectic, but if you're up for a wild, heart-pounding read that's all about the edge-of-your-seat experience, "The Cold in the Black" is your kind of book. Just brace yourself; it's a bumpy ride!
It reminded of some elements of the expanse with the class based issues and mining themes.
**This was a Goodreads Giveaway ARC.. received a free kindle copy in return for an honest review. This is my honest review.
When a transport team arrives on the docks of an alien planet, things are immediately wrong. The team that was supposed to meet them isn't there. So now they have to make their way up a frozen mountain, through a blizzard, in hopes of making it on time. But once they arrive, things continue to be wrong. Blood is everywhere. Bodies strown around. Equipment destroyed. The team must work fast to find what they came for, or risk joining the dead.
Whoa... Holy shit, this was great! I loved it. I will say I was kind of hesitant starting this because I had to DNF my last sci-fi read, but I'm so glad I started this one. It was wonderfully written, spectacularly freaky and twisted, and the flow was smooth. I very much enjoyed this book. So many causalities!! I love it!! Only thing I'll say is: don't trust anyone.
Andres Chavez has some of the most original and unique ideas.
The world created in The Cold In The Black was mysterious, bleak, and full of interesting details. It was fascinating to find out little tidbits about this world, such as the stance on suicide, the definition of lifers, credit debts from injuries, etc.
This story is pretty much action from the start. I know that is something a lot of readers will love, but I found I wanted more description and characterization. In the beginning, I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters because I didn't know that much about them.
This story is a perfect fit for readers looking for a twisty, horror on an alien planet with nonstop action.
I received this book from a Goodreads Giveaway, and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed the storyline, but found myself wanting a little more from the book. There are spelling and grammatical errors throughout that stopped me a few times, but the story itself was interesting enough to keep me going. I found myself wanting more character development and background information. So many characters are introduced early in the book, and I had a difficult time remembering character-specific information due to the vast number of names in the first few chapters/sections.
In the suspenseful and action-packed novel The Cold in the Black, readers are thrust into the eerie hallways of an alien mountain, where off-worlders must face both terrifying adversaries and their own inner demons. With each twist and turn, this gripping story expertly examines the boundaries of human endurance and the dreadful force of nature, keeping you on the edge of your seat."
I actually liked this book more the further into the story I got. The beginning was a little confusing with so many characters introduced in such a short amount of time. Once I got further into it and there weren’t as many characters it was easier to keep track of who was who. It was a good story, I enjoyed it.
This was a fun read! If you enjoy alien horror type sci-fi books this is a good read to pick up. It is a fairly quick read but well written and has all the best aspects of a classic sci-fi horror read!
This is high quality sci-fi that was an intense, thrilling read. I'm well past the teen/young adult stage that was described as the reader of this book but I found it a suspenseful, captivating read. A page turner for me! I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
