Such an amazing story of friendship, reading and family.

A little boy misses his best friend after he moves away. He gets really engrossed in reading the book his friend gave him before he left. However, he does feel lonely without a good friend; his parents getting more involved with his new born baby sister and work. He misses going to the library. But things will become better again for this little boy when he finds a new friend and his family gets more settled.

I love the writing, the story, the characters and the illustrations.
Thank you, Capstone, for the advance reading copy.

Sam and Milo are best friends. Unfortunately, Milo has to move away. Milo gives Sam a book to remember him. It is the first book Sam has ever owned. It’s a really good book and Sam reads it all the time. One time he accidentally leaves it on the bus he was riding. Sam realizes he knows the book by heart. Naya, a girl on the bus with Sam, ends up finding the book and offers to return it. Sam gives it to Naya and gains a friend in return.

A good book about loosing a friend & making new friends. It’s about changes in life and how to deal with them. It teaches about the power of books and reading. I enjoyed the story and the diverse, realistic illustrations were great! Another great book by Capstone! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

3.85 - Good
Clean yet vibrant art. Adorable characters that have distinct personalities. Shared interests unite people in all-encompassing directions. Important message of remembering friends, the moments shared, and the blossoming of new connections. Deals with the loneliness of moving on from a relationship that ended on good terms. Celebrates the wonders of reading and the books that impact our daily lives. Sam finds comfort in the past and future while facing unfamiliarity.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book for free in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own.

This book was very heartfelt and charming and I even really enjoyed it as a 20 something year old woman. So I can only imagine that little boys (and girls) will really love this book. It was a really well written childrens book!

It is a story of two childhood friends Milo & Sam, who happened to be separated due to some circumstances.
Sara Laux Akin seems to put her childhood memoirs here with this fictitious picture book. Here young age life of travelling with bus, visiting library and playing basketball, she included all at once.
Coming back to story, Milo gifted one of his books to Sam to read while leaving for new place and Sam treasured it as his best of gifts ever. He read it full in one shot and even forgot to eat food and to tidy his room.
But one day while travelling with his mother he lost his book in a bus he was travelling from. He tried reaching library with his mother to get same book from there but couldn't due to his matters in his family.
And then on day he got his book back in sight but he made it gift to the same person who brought it back to him.

This is a very thoughtful and beautiful story which tells about keeping memories for real and let the things that helps in making those memories passes on for others to cherish the effect. For for such thing, nothing could be more better than a book.
In my words, "By gifting someone a book we don't just give them piece of assembled pages to keep but a whole world to remember."

The Pass
by Sara Laux Akin, Tanisha Cherislin (Illustrator)
A great social emotional learning book. It has a way of showing many lessons of young children's lives. First in foremost is the value of friendship. The book shows the nature of friendship is evolving. Some in finding commonalities, second in sharing interest. A young boy looses his best friend to a move. This causes grief, only dispelled by a gift of a beloved book. The book changes his life, not only opening reading to him but finding comfort in reading. The book helps him through the transition of a new sibling, and loneliness. This also changes his family as he is opened to reading, they change their behaviors as a family. The book is later shared on to a new friend, in memory of his friend, but also in his personal growth.
These are common circumstances today. Children are faced with the mobility of society today, as young families move repeatedly. It also shows how to find connection, and remembrance of friendship. The value of moving positive things on, passing them forward helps more people.

Thank you NetGalley for providing eArc.

This was such an easy reading picture book about a boy, Sam who's best friend, are moving away. But when Milo moves, he leaves a book that he knows by heart.

The story is short, cute and manageable.

I loved the illustrations, they are so cute, colorful, representive and warm. Without the illustrations, I wouldn't have picked this book to read, I'm sorry author Sara. Sure the text was nice and so, but it wasn't what touched me to the heart. It was the representive scenes of a pregnant mom, the adorable dog, and the amazing library that weighted my score.

The themes of friendship, moving on and love for books are so nice. But I must be honest, I thought I would have seen more basketball...

I received an electronic ARC from Capstone through the SLJ Picture Book Palooza July 2024.
I love the story beyond the cover and the court. Sam and Milo are inseparable until Milo moves away. Milo gives Sam a book as a gift. Love the subtle reference to it being the first Sam has ever had. Laux Akin acknowledges differing financial levels without needing more than a few sentences. Readers see Sam treasure the book and read it over and over until he accidentally forgets it on the bus. Life events keep them from getting to the library to get other books for quite some time. When they do, he makes a reconnection with a girl he met on the bus previously. She has his book but he remembers what Milo told him and passes it on to her. A lovely story of passing on what you value to help others.

This was a very sweet book intended for young readers with such likeable characters. It has a beautiful illustration touch to it and the meaning on friends moving away from each other left such an impact.

I really think this book would very much aid children who are in the same situation with a friend moving. There’s also the addition of this book being gifted and how those small gestures leave an impact in memories.

This was fun and sweet, I loved the way this author wrote this and it would definitely be a perfect read for young readers.

Be it books or friendship, PASS IT ON!
Sam and Milo are best friends. When Milo has to move away, he gives his favorite book to Sam. The book carries Sam through the new baby and then it gets forgotten on the bus! What happens next is the very best.
The illustrations by Tanisha Cherislin are clear, colorful, and fun!
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Capstone | Capstone Editions via NetGalley. Thank you!

This picture book has radiant illustrations that are full of light and color, and it tells a sweet story about accepting change, saying goodbye to a friend, and making a new friend. The storyline includes elements related to both sports and reading, and also includes the birth of a new sibling. There's a lot going on here, but the story is tightly plotted and feels satisfying, and it will appeal to both kids and adults.

I received a temporary digital copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for the e-ARC of this book to read and review. My heart absolutely aches for all of these sweet kids, each character shows such generosity and willingness to share their favorite things with others, even when it looks like they're all individually going through tough times. I hope that kids of all ages adore this story of emotional intelligence and support -- and share the love of books and libraries!

The Pass is a sweet picture book about a young boy who receives a book from his best friend that is moving away. The book is a treasure to the young boy & he reads it until he has it memorized. I really appreciated the love that these kids shared for literature and the important message of sharing reading with their friends.

Thanks to NetGalley, Sara Laux Akin, and Capstone for the chance to read and review! My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Such a sweet and heartwarming story about friendship during periods of change and the love of reading! I can see this book being especially useful to teach kids about resilience during change as the main character’s best friend moves away and his family welcomes a little sister. Not just a book about basketball, but about sharing what little you may have with others, resilience in periods of change, and making new friends!

when his friend moves, he gives Sam his first book. Reading that book makes the pain of his friend moving a little less, until the day he leaves it on a bus. Through the journey of missing his book and his friend, he eventually he finds he is ready for a new book and a new friend.

This sweet story subtly encourages making friends, sharing, kindness and reading! I showed it to an elementary school guidance counselor and she enthused, "This author should write more! What a great message without hitting the kids over the head with the morals!"

I also loved the clever touch of "This book belongs to . . ."

When Sam’s best friend Milo has to move away, Sam is very sad. They play basketball together and have a good time. When Milo moves, Milo gives Sam his favorite book. Sam is so lost in the book and he finds refuge in it when he’s feeling lonely and sad. When he meets a new girl on the bus and loses his book, he has to figure out what to do and maybe make a new friend in the process.

This book was really cute! It teaches kids about reading and the power of books. It also touches on a lot of common kid problems like feeling lonely after a friend moves away and after having a new sibling. I loved the illustrations as well. I think a lot of kids will enjoy this one!

Thanks so much to netgalley and Capstone for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
