Which famous national park features a geyser that shoots water 185 feet into the air and thousands of American bison? Journey into the history of Yellowstone and its famous wildlife, canyons, rivers, forests, and more in this illustrated book for young readers! From the #1 New York Times Best-Selling Who Was? series comes Where Is?, a series that tells the stories of world-famous landmarks and natural wonders and features a fold-out map!Established in 1857 as the first national park in the United States, Yellowstone has been drawing visitors to its beautiful landscape for over 150 years. Before it became a national park, the region was home to Native Americans for over 11,000 years, including the Shoshone, Lakota, Crow, Blackfoot, Flathead, Bannok, and Nez Perce tribes. Today, tourists come to the park from all over the world to camp and to visit the famous Old Faithful geyser and the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest super volcano in North America. The many animals that live in Yellowstone include bison, black and grizzly bears, elk, wolves, and more than three hundred species of birds. Yellowstone is so large that it has land in three different states -- Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Learn the rich history of one of America's most beloved national parks in this book perfect for young explorers.
Yellowstone's history is well overviewed in this book. From geological formation and the area's first human inhabitants, to gold prospectors and becoming our first National Park, then being overrun with tourists. Yellowstone's wildlife, plants, and geography are summarized. I was surprised by how few frog species there are in such a large area! (Love my frogs and frog facts.) It's concluded with a strong environmental emphasis.
I love these Who Was? and Where Is? series. They offer loads of information within a condensed format. You get all the key highlights and interesting facts, without having to wade through a 500 page biography or nonfiction book. I waited in anticipation for some time to get this new installment and found it successfully informative, but didn't feel the added spark that some of my favorite books in the series have inspired.
Definitely take this lightweight book along to read if you're visiting Yellowstone. And tread lightly while you're there. ☺
(Jasper is LOVING these nonfiction short stories!! His cousins are all going to Yellowstone this week, and so he had a blast learning about their trip!!)
I’ve always seen these "Who Was?" and "Where Is?" books with the big head illustrations at bookstores, but I never actually sat down to read one until now, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a super quick read, but it’s packed with so many random facts that I didn't know, like the fact that the park is literally sitting on top of a giant supervolcano. Even though it’s technically for younger readers, it doesn't feel like it’s talking down to you. This book is a must have for an elementary science or geography unit. It’s super light and condensed, so it’s perfect for kids who get intimidated by massive textbooks or big chapter books. It’s the kind of book you could leave in a "discovery corner" of your classroom library, and kids would actually pick it up on their own because the illustrations are fun and the chapters are short. I didn't give it a full five stars just because I expected it to focus a little more on the environmental conservation side, but as a general overview, it’s a pretty solid read overall. Definitely a great addition to a future classroom library.
It sadly took all of 3:49 on the audiobook version of this book for the author to mention a biased perspective on the earth's history. That's when I chose to DNF Where is Yellowstone? I do not agree with people who say that the earth is millions or billions of years old; the Bible is very clear that this is not the case. In addition to the Bible making this clear, physical proof in our world shows that the earth is significantly younger than the millions of years that some people falsely state.
Great book for basic information on the park. It provided excellent history as well as current information about the park. My son loves this series, and I wanted to check it out. I will definitely read more as they contain great nuggets of information!
I do not care one iota if these books are children’s books, they are wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and now really, really want to take a trip to Yellowstone!
