Sergio /Groo is the fastest sword in the hemisphere!
... but since the pen is mightier than the sword, he probably prefers the title of ’the world’s fastest cartoonist’



I am a big fan of his still ongoing series of sword & sorcery misadventures featuring Groo the Wanderer and his faithful sidekick Rufferto, but I am less familiar with his regular cartoon work for Mad magazine and for other various publishers. According to his biographical notes, Sergio Aragones has been drawing continuously for Mad since the early 1960s and up to 2020 .
His lightning fast style of drawing is something I normally steer well clear off in the comics of other artists, my own preferences being for carefully drawn, anatomically correct and well coloured panels. Of course, Sergio can fill a page with hundreds if not thousands of small, wickedly funny caricatures that somehow are instantly recognizable as his own without a need to check for signature. Reading more about his early years, I realised one of his secret ingredients: he has studied mime in university with Alexander Jodorowsky, something that helped later with the facial expressions and the dynamic of his characters, even when they are reduced to the most basic outlines.
I keep returning to his work, despite these deeply embedded reservations about careful draughtsmanship, because Sergio Aragones is guaranteed to make me laugh on every page he draws.

In 2009, Aragonés told an interviewer, "I'm thinking and laughing all day long. Every time I think of a joke, I'm also telling myself a new joke. It's a great way to live."

He deserves the numerous awards on his trophy wall.

This recent trade paperback anthology collects twelve previously published issues of his speechless gag strips, most of them in black & white with a few bonus panels and covers coloured by his long time collaborator Tom Luth.
The title speaks for itself: we don’t need no words to appreciate Mr. Aragones’ subversive satire and general mayhem. Similarly, we don’t need screen captures of his panels, both because his style is so well known and because what we have here are sequential strips – single frames make no sense out of context.
My own words in this review are equally superfluous, so just dig in and be safe out there!
It’s a mad, mad, mad world!

This massive compendium of Sergio Aragonés’s sight gags is a true mixed bag—some land beautifully, others fall flat. Many reflect the era they were drawn, (hello, 20th century!) which means plenty of female objectification that doesn’t always age so well.

Still, his genius and artistry is undeniable: instantly recognizable, wildly inventive, and unlike anyone else’s. Some gags are so loose they require a second (or third) look before the punchline clicks—but when it does, the payoff is there.

Personally, I think Sergio shone brightest in the margins of MAD Magazine, where his quick, sly doodles were delightful Easter eggs. Alternatively, in a giant showcase like this book, the sheer volume can feel overwhelming, but of course, it’s still fascinating to see his amazing range and unparalleled ability.

Я дуже рада тримати в руках повне видання німих коміксів Арагонеса, з усіма випусками Lounder Than Words та Actions Speak під однією твердою обкладинкою, ще й опубліковане великим видавництвом мальописів. В 2021 році, придумавши собі челендж читати кожен день по мальопису, я вже бачила деякі з цих сторінок, і щиро гиготіла над невибагливим, простим, але так сердечно намальованим гумором.

Німі мальописи я люблю й холю з двох причин, практичної й сентиментальної.

По-перше, вони є повсякчасним нагадуванням авторам графічних романів, що писати можна пензлем, через дії, малюнок, гру з форматом коміксу й роботою над сценарієм. Бо, нажаль, більшість не бачить міри в чіт-кодах описів та словесних бульбашок, перетворюючи формат графічного роману в роман звичайний, але ілюстрований.

По-друге, я (за)багато думаю про спільноти, яким чхати на мої проблеми, бо в них є свої жінок і дітей Афганістану й інших подібних країн, що були відкинуті сучасними демократіями на поталу жорстокості й невігластва їхніх поневолювачів, отримуючи від вільного світу хіба що подачки гуманітарної допомоги через ті самі брудні руки, що в'яжуть, б'ють і вбивають їх. Мені щиро шкода, що я не можу зарадити болю й приниженню цілих націй по всьому світу, й мене лякає, що, коли настане час падіння режимів, які стримують їх, цілі покоління людей опиняться посеред розвинутого світу зовсім без засобів до інтеграції й комунікації, які їм так і не дали розвинути їхні тирани, домашні, релігійні й державні. Коли ж я читаю німий мальопис, то не можу не уявляти, що він явить собою рівну можливість розуміння сюжету й задоволення від нього як для мене, так і для людини, яка не вміє читати, чи не має змоги мати переклади книжок на власній мові, чи не знає жодної іноземної. Потрапивши в руки такої людини, збірка sequential art принесе їй стільки ж вражень від історії, персонажів й пов'язаних з ними внутрішніх переживань, стільки ж сміху або сліз, як і мені, й це наше спільне розуміння хоч чогось зможе бути першим кроком в об'єднанні всього іншого спільного, що є між нами, як між людьми. Все вищесказане не означає, що саме німі мальописи треба скидати з літаків разом із провіантом, але ця ідея мені подобається.
