The problem was not the word-smithing -- Forbes writing is solid -- but the book required too much suspension of disbelief too early in the story.
Now, I just finished reading EMILY WILDE'S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES and had no problem with it's out of this world perspective. And I'm currently reading Scalzi's STARTER VILLAIN which is silly, almost goofy. But neither of those books made the characters behave in a way that isn't human. Which is to say the emotional logic was not there.
If you're good with this, that's fine. I just find this sort of plot gimmick unacceptable.
Now you've done it. You have written and continued a series that I truly love. Thank you, simply thank you. I thought Head Case and its crew was a fading memory, but you, you have reignited the story and in a fresh new way. I salute you Sir! I don't have many joys left, but your writings are one of them and this series holds a special place in my world. I have have been disabled and mainly bed ridden for a little over 15 years now. For me, to see how your characters not only suffer tragedy, but seem to almost always rise above to become something greater than they once were amazes me and greatly lifts my spirits. You have become my favorite writer and storyteller. Thank you again and please keep the stories coming.
What a shame that this book started just like the previous series but I felt for the newbies when after leaving Earth it all fell apart. It then got even more weird when they were attacked and had to use Ben to split!! I really expected that they would be given a chance before they were marooned in a galaxy far, far away cause it looks like they will be there for awhile. Not interested in any further books.
I am getting very tired of this. If you can't write a story in one volume then get a different hobby. Back in the day this entire thing would be one book. Now the lame thing to do is break it up into several little parts. I decided to read this thinking it would only be two parts Nope. Now three. And who knows how many more. So sad because the writing was half way decent.
I loved M.R. Forbes' Starship For Sale series and wanted more out of the universe he had created. This was an instant buy for me the moment I saw it was released, and was curious to see what he would do in this new book.
It's the start of a new series, with a new main character and the setup is nearly identical to the original series. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The setup was extremely repetitive but it did the job of introducing us to our new hero and his friends.
The writing style and formula is more or less exactly the same as the previous series, which some may find too repetitive to give this a shot. We have the internal monologues throughout the story, we have character building during travel between destinations, and we have banter amongst the cast. This should all sound very familiar. For me though, Forbes does such a good job with his writing that it didn't bother me too much but your views on this may vary. Characters from the previous series do return and it was great to see them again.
If you loved Starship For Sale like I did you will no doubt find a lot to like with the start of this new saga. I cant wait to see what happens next.
A light hearted read if you have nothing better to do.
I gave this book a four star rating because it was interesting and entertaining. The characters were cool and the idea was lighthearted. However, I can’t believe anything of much in the end. It was just another OK twist in the story big deal what are you gonna do now. So if you like a light hearted read and you got nothing else to do, it’s a good read interesting funny times and a lot of surprises but kind of quirky and sometimes a little stupid but it is what it is.
This wasn't for me; just tossing that out there right away. I debated a lot on reading this for at least a month while seeing it in the suggestions, as the description wasn't that appealing to me, but eventually caved and tried it out anyways.
Overall, it just went from one crazy situation to the next and by the halfway point, when the Warden mentions entertainment, I said enough and called it quits, and this was after setting it aside twice in a week to read another book - this when a book (or more) a day isn't uncommon for me.
I am so glad to have found this new book set in this universe. I really enjoyed the starship for sale series. I am very glad to have read this book in the same universe. I enjoyed the tech, I enjoyed seeing the characters from the other series again, and all of their adventures in this book. I definitely recommend both of the series in this universe and this book.
A quirky adventure that reminds me of a certain style of eighties movies. Apparently a spin off series to a very similar set up with a whole lotta books that I not particularly interested in going back to read after this one as the author did a pretty good job of giving us enough info to not need to have read the other series. and besides if it really is basically a copy with new characters and situations to put them in I don't feel like I'm missing anything by skipping the earlier one.
Read the entire book. Will not read the rest of the series. Was not what I expected, which was my fault. Normally, I enjoy the sci-fi genre because I learn something, typically about human nature, from each book. I should have looked closer at the cover, paid more attention to the content as I read. Book reminds me of a comic book in a text form. Lots of boom, pow, but tended to put me to sleep. Just not my cup of tea, even as light entertainment.
I was hoping for a great space adventure. What I got was a sad introduction to the main character. A beginning of friendships, and promised adventure. Some humor. A few almost exciting moments. With an ending I didn't see coming. That I'm pretty sure I don't care to find out what happened. I wouldn't say don't read this book. Maybe just have lower expectations... At least lower then mine.
I bet Matt and Ben are surprised to e traversing space again and this time as yet they or I have any idea where it will end up. Still interestingly enough the Aleal has been located and may well be the answer and the question. Let’s read on and see.
Strange tale of the characters meet for the first time in person, and then are sent into a different universe and are turned into entertainment by an ego driven maniac.
Like Starship for Sale, Starship for Rent takes us to understand unfamiliar but interesting place with intriguing characters. Can't wait to see where it goes next.
Meet the new series, not the old series, but still qualify fun. The robot head is the starship, and the crew is familiar with new humans. I highly recommend reading this if you enjoyed M.R. Forbes books, especially his Starship For Sale series.
The premise might have worked but it got too silly and frankly lost my interest halfway through. I always finish reading a book if just to see if it gets better . This one didn't.
Three gamers are picked up and transported to a new galaxy but they can’t seem to find a way back out! Somewhat funny and edgy, this story was fun to read.
A big fan of the entire series. Never a dull moment (or page). Tons of twists and turns, but enough foreshadowing to surprise the reader with an unexpected outcome!
