Niet langer achtervolgd door het verleden

Rate this book

This may have been the hardest book I’ve ever read. At less than 200 pages, it wasn’t a thick book, but it took me almost two attentive weeks to read. When I finally reached the last page, I felt like I had pushed off the bottom of an ancient seabed two weeks ago and was only just then breaking the surface and gasping for air.

Hauntings is about authenticity and how to hear the voice of the soul over the stories and legacies of the past. I picked it up hoping for insight into the psychology of a character, but Hollis is a Jungian analyst, and most of the book is taken up with practical advice on how to quit being a ghost in your own life, repeating the scripts of the past.

In a powerful assimilation and enhancement of his previous work, Dr. Hollis creates a concise masterpiece of depth psychology and wisdom for the soul.

'Haunting: Dispelling the Ghosts who Run Our Lives', didn't want to be born. After 13-previous books on soul development and Jungian psychology, James Hollis thought he was done writing. His highly regarded oeuvre, teaching and popularity as a Jungian lecturer have secured him a permanent place as a pioneer and guide to depth psychology and Jungian thought.

But Hollis has always tried to help people. While some see him as a "therapist's therapist" or professor, he is first and foremost a healer, encouraging those around him to improve their lives to pursue their individual growth and development. In the tradition of a true Jungian, Hollis teaches, shares and writes about what he has experienced himself. Whether it is the grief of surviving his son's death, experiencing a breakdown at midlife or simply coping with the stresses of modern life, Hollis heals most effectively because of his own experiences.

'Haunting' gathers many of his most powerful threads and collects them in an effort to identify and exorcise the archaic ghosts that haunt our lives. For example, I am 50-years-old and 75 pounds overweight. In most areas my life is "together." I love my son, friends and other family, I consciously want to live, yet I commit suicide on the installment plan one plate of nachos with extra sour cream at a time.

Whether the "ghost" that haunts me is a belief that "I'm not good enough," "I can't risk failure," "I don't deserve to be sexually attractive," there is something deep in my being that neither self-will, Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem have successfully cast out. I consciously want to change, I am tired of the same boring physical failure, but over and over I repeat the same bad choices.

'Haunting' gave me hope that I can eventually identify the "ghost" or "complex" that permits the destruction of my body and imagine a way of ending my servitude to its narrow, useless, destructive purpose. After reading Haunting, I believe that through trial, error, perseverance and courage I will find liberation. Thank you, Dr. Hollis!

Beyond the well-written prose, erudite vocabulary, clinical examples, inspiring quotes, brilliant insights and the pleasure of enjoying a master of Jungian psychology at the top of his game, what matters most is the possibility for personal healing and growth that 'Haunting' offers the committed reader. That gift is worth a hundred times the cost of this book.

Hopefully Haunting is his penultimate work, and not the capstone of James Hollis's literary legacy.

This is the first book I have read by James Hollis. I now want to read everything he has written. "Hauntings" is an immensely satisfying text about the unconscious, about human psychology, about life itself. With eloquence and wisdom, Hollis describes all the disparate forces that rattle our psyche and push us off the path. We underestimate the past. Even modern therapists deny its influence, often preferring pragmatic cognitive interventions over the classical "tell me about your mother" shrink approach. Yet, Hollis reminds us how great a hold the past has over our minds and that its forces must be contended with to grow and make the most of our lives. This is a deceptively simple book. It's barely 150 pages, yet Hollis distills the essence of the human struggle in it, while also giving us manna for our journeys. Highly readable and recommended.

My husband passed away on June 11, and in searching for something to help me through this difficult transition, I thought of James Hollis, whose work has helped me so many times before. Hauntings turned out to be the perfect choice. It is powerfully written and for me it was healing in its ability to help me clarify the ghosts I carry from my past into my daily life. I read it with my husband and myself in mind. I could see us in its pages, and it helped me put some things to rest once and for all. It helped me understand him better. And it will help me journey forward without him.

Great book, James Hollis has a gift for sharing his profound understanding of Depth Psychology in a most humble fashion. As much prose as literature, a pleasure to read. To paraphrase, "The greatest haunting of our lives is the one that we alone produce, that of the unlived life."

There are very few psychologist who can rival Dr. James Hollis for the clarity with which he explains even the most complex ideas. This book may be his finest yet. It is richly textured, psychologically sophisticated material that will invite deep exploration. The ghosts he writes about can ruin and run our lives. With "Hauntings" we have a guide for navigating these subtle and sometimes treacherous realms. This is a must read!

Hauntings is an impressive look at the nonvisible influences in our lives that are so deeply suppressed or scary that we may not even know them except in dreams. Hollis, an analyst from Houston, is well-known in the Jungian world, and he draws from a huge cultural memory of poetry, television ads, mythology, and philosophical thought to make his point. I like the message about how the soul is the teacher that steers us onto the path that is our destiny. The book is densely written with a graduate-level vocabulary that requires a slow reading pace. I found it best to commit to a chapter at a time; breaking up the reading into smaller units made it too easy for me to lose my way.

Not an easy read as it's pacing felt rather slow and dragging, yet it could be due to how this book doesn't offer neat solutions but questions the darkest corners of the human psyche.

The book’s impact lies in its insistence that true freedom and self-realization come from facing what haunts us, not fleeing from it. Facing ghosts aren't always pleasant; a different touch to its intense confrontational writing style could ease the tension the questions provoke

This took patience. And so does facing life

Given that Hollis is, through his writings, something of a psychopomp for me, his books get an automatic 5 stars.

I always appreciate how he weaves in literary references with his Jungian insights, such as:

"And how meaningful is Beckett's admonition is to me today: 'Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.' Rilke's paradoxical words also draw me onward still toward the unlived life that haunts all of us. Our task, he writes, is to be 'continuously defeated by ever-larger things.' While the ego is apprehensive about the idea of defeat, the soul welcomes such ego defeat and the expansion that comes from ever-larger challenges. And Rilke adds, each of us may find "room for a second huge and timeless life.'

The theme of his book can be summarized in two words: show up.

"All of us fail in so many ways to show up, to step into the largeness of the soul...Psychopathology, literally translated from its Greek roots, means 'the expression of the suffering of the soul.' Why would the soul suffer if it did not have its own will, its own desires, its own plan - all of which are thwarted by the ministries of fate, by the derailments of our adaptations, and by our complex-driven choices...The greatest haunting we all suffer is the lost relationship to the soul."

"As one of those exemplary figures who summon us to sacrifice the ego's petty agenda, Jesus, put it, "Not my will but Thine" (or Dante's phrase, in la sua voluntade e nostra pace, 'in his will is our peace'). All of this is much more than the ego bargained for, desires, or feels comfortable in confronting. But the alternative, the flight from individuation, is worse. Then we are stuck with our frightened, diminished selves, in love with possessions which disappoint, power which fails us always, and presumption which always proves in sufficient. To be stuck in such narrowed quarters is to bump up against our inauthentic being, over and over, which is a form of hell...When we observe and serve the mystery found in nature, in each other, in ourselves, in good work, we are living on the edge and grow inevitably, and we are thereby rewarded by the inherent richness of the journey."

Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives explores the unconscious "ghosts" (patterns/neuroses) that strongly influence our lives and our choices.

How do I review a book like this? Do I begin with the beautiful use of language? Or do I start with the literary and classical references, which seamlessly form part of the text? In so many other books these often appear gratuitous or pretentious, but in James Hollis's writing they just flow across the page in clear and bright images to support his complex ideas about the soul, its wounds and how to heal those fractures.

There is the inspirational content springing from a profound intellect and the hard-earned wisdom of a life well-lived. But this text is so much more that just abstract intellectual theories: there is heart and soul in these words as well.

Hollis occasionally refers to his therapy patients, but these case examples are kept short and relevant. Without in any way pontificating or proselytizing, the power of HAUNTINGS comes from both the hard-hitting metaphysical questions and a generous sharing of the author's knowledge on how to live a deeper, more thoughtful, more conscious life.

This is a book that needs to be read again and again, so that one can savour the depth and breadth of the insights and guidance offered. I read it slowly, savouring the journey and often going back to re-read passages I'd highlighted. A must-read for anyone wanting to live a meaningful, contented life freed from the dual prison of our personal pasts and our ancestral wounds.

A neighbor loaned me this book after I got a postcard from my mother that really got under my skin. It's a super valuable book as it makes the central point that we are so influenced every day by our past (since he's a Jungian, make that not only your parents, but all your ancestors, your DNA, etc)and the only way to find our true selves is to examine the past very carefully. I agree with this and have never believed that one can just "move on" and that the influence of our upbringing magically disappears. It oozes into our dreams, into our comments, reactions, etc. So, super important! Since I am not very "high literary", his many allusions to mythology and literature at times were an impediment to getting his finer points..I'm not going to research this author or that poet, or whatever. He also used a fair number of words I don't know, which I also am not going to look up. (My vocabulary is pretty decent.)

When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I read stacks of books about childbirth and caring for a newborn. My husband declined to join me in this endeavor, explaining that he thought parenting would be an on-the-job kind of learning experience. He was right, and I wish I could get back all of the time I spent reading those useless books that never seemed to apply at all to my spirited firstborn or our particular family dynamic. Were I to relive that period of my life, I'd read Hollis's Hautings so as to gain some perspective on the psychic dragons with which I've been destined to contend.
Per Hollis's premise, we can read countless books about the human experience without coming any closer to understanding or escaping our own ghosts. These ghosts carry all of the biological and psychic energies of our ancestors and confront us repeatedly via external life circumstances until we've the courage to confront them and learn from them. Before you dismiss this as psycho-bunk, recall that science has now confirmed that markers of trauma can be passed down at the DNA level. Consider also, if you will, whether you've found yourself fighting mental battles that you don't really understand and that don't feel like your own.
My particular circumstances during the 2020 pandemic have allowed me the time for self-reflection. In fact, I find that I really have no choice but to self reflect because I've met once again with circumstances and dramas I thought I'd put behind me years before. In the words of Hollis, I find that I am quite haunted. If I've any chance of living authentically and modelling an authentic life for my kids, I've got to welcome these ghosts and hear them out. For me, this means reflecting on certain realities of my childhood and acknowledging the extent to which I've allowed those realities to dictate the person I've become.
Really fantastic bonus re: this book: Hollis is constantly citing famous works of literature. I've built a reading list around his bibliography.

I discovered James Hollis a year or two ago and , the more I read, the more I understand and appreciate his perspective. Somewhere in this book he talks about how we do not rise in the morning, look in the mirror while brushing our teeth, and say, "Today I will do the same stupid things, the same reflexive things, the same regressive things that I have been doing for years!" But, more often than not, we do indeed do the same stupid, reflexive, and regressive things. And why? That's the important question that he attempts to explain or at least shed some light on in this book. Once again, I am reminded of how complicated it really is to be human. Very thoughtful and engaging read.

Eight years ago I read my first James Hollis and was utterly blown away. Don’t get me wrong I’m still blown away but this time I get it, I get all that he has to say. I feel a deep sense of gratitude and profound respect for his honesty, professionalism and wisdom.

I fully embrace all that James has to say and can only hope that as I step forward daily into the mystery. I am doing so from a position that means I’m reflecting on what matters most and making value based decisions that aren’t entirely from my conditioned unconscious. My hope is some actions and choices are intrinsically authentic and due to the examination of what’s come before can also be of love and light for others.

This book is about how profoundly the past influences us. We carry it with us every minute of every day. It affects our decisions and actions at every moment. This book is also about the haunting of our unlived lives, and that of our parent’s unlived lives.
I don’t typically underline, but I filled this book. It reveals hidden characteristics of the water in which we swim. Discussed are key concepts we must understand in order to know ourselves and effectively manage/navigate the world around us.

My favorite portion was about individuation. This is Jung’s concept of re-discovering and reincorporating our authentic self. The process of shedding the accommodations and adaptations we adopted to survive childhood. Most people never reach this step, and remain imprisoned, stuck.

Lastly, this book does an interesting job of weaving in the sentiments of some of my favorite novels. Haunting novels by the likes of James Agee, William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, Dostoevsky…etc. Suddenly a common theme appears:
-we are haunted by our past
-No one will ever tell us who we are. We have to find that out for ourselves.

Amazing Book! Hollis is one of my favorite authors.

Some excerpts:

1. (The cosmological question) Why are we here, in service to what, and toward what end?
2. (The sociological question) Who are my people, what is my duty to others, and what are the rights, duties, privileges, and expectations of my tribe?
3. (The psychological question) Who am I, how am I different from others, what is my life about, and how am I to find my way through the difficulties of life?

These questions, seldom asked consciously, are nonetheless always being asked in our unconscious, and we often find the putative “answers” – get a job, make money, have a good time, resist aging and the natural decline toward death – to be profoundly unsatisfying, anti-natural, superficial, and soul-denying. But then who really believes he or she has a soul these days? In place of [spirituality and meaning], we rely instead on materialism, hedonism, narcissism, and distraction to get us through the night. And just how well has that worked for us? – pgs. 106-107

We all have ghosts who run our lives. "All relationships are projection and transference." Betrayal is always experienced as a loss. Then self betrayal becomes a habit. Carl Jung said that we cannot solve our wounds, but we can outgrow them. Faulkner: the past isn't over. It's not even past.
Hauntings is rich in what we need to do to find the meaning in our lives, because we have no life without meaning. We need to make our unconscious conscious - to make better decisions, reduce our suffering, and find some modicum of joy.
I have read no better teacher than James Hollis is the accessibility of Jungian thought and practical revelations!

Not all addictions are bad.

After reading my first James Hollis book, I must confess that I have become addicted to his books. In November, I will be able to partake in his livestream “ Broken Mirrors.” It just feels good to have a few “a-ha” moments while reading his books and realizing that I’m not crazy — some one else feels this way also. BTW: His books are less fattening than chocolate — my lifelong other addiction.
