I struggled with this, a book club read. I didn’t find it credible, particularly the main character of the teacher. A current UK school would be an Academy but this isn’t mentioned, important when the Senior Leadership get involved. If a pupil appeared in a class who isn’t on the roll, it isn’t up to the teacher to sort it out, it would be handed on to Admin. Once the the behaviour in the UK is questionable, it becomes harder to accept the Ukrainian world as well.
There is a twist about halfway through the book which I found beyond credibility and so the rest of the book which followed on from this became unreal.
I have spent many evenings reading, listening to and re- reading several drafts of this novel. I can confidently say it is written on a framework of extensive research, depth and rigorous attention to detail.
Its accuracy is matched by its compelling themes and convincing narrative. It is a thoughtful insight into the calamity of the Ukraine war and the struggles of the teaching profession.
The conscience of the author is central to its moral tone and ignites a powerful, exhilarating and thought-provoking read.
Plot: unbelievable. Included several devices, such as the mystery about what happened to Ray, which were just annoying. The language was trying too hard to be beyond ordinary. Again - annoying.
