Ah, the Filth Pig…or Phil for short. An ugly creation that manipulates people just so he can absorb their fears and feelings. It brings him pleasure, more than any drug could. And he enjoys it. So we never find out exactly what he is, but that just adds to the mystique and unsettling nature of this character. And poor Melissa is his latest victim, with her dysfunctional family and disorganized life. Essig really created something unique here. It’s a novel concept that fine-tunes itself as the story progresses, but also doesn’t allow itself to get too big or complex. It hit all the right notes in a limited runtime and kept me engaged throughout. A solid outing from Robert Essig.

The Philth Pig is tame compared to Essig’s other work, but it’s still super disturbing. Phil is such a creepy character. He’s appalling and unlikeable, yet you can’t look away. You watch as he sucks away the hopes and dreams of others and basically leaves them a shell of their former self. When Melissa finds out about him, things really take an interesting turn. She has issues of her own and a very dysfunctional family. Add in dealing with Phil and it’s a recipe for disaster.

This was a quick read but so gripping! Essig did a wonderful job with the main characters, created a unique storyline, and delivered quite the ending!

“The vacant hollows where his eyes should have been seemed to stare at her endlessly, as if the deep voids were vacuums that would suck her soul right out of her body.”

A Horror Bookworm Recommendation
The Philth Pig by Robert Essig
https://horrorbookwormreviews.com/

Melissa endures many problems, amongst them are anorexia and others including her broken relationship with her parents. When a strange man named Phil enters her family’s life, something unseen by the naked eye begins to evolve. Phil, known as the Filth Pig, feeds off people’s hopes, dreams and happiness. His mysterious bottle of elixir is the marrow that feeds the unknown.

The Philth Pig explores the taste of hope, the appetite for pure joy and the hunger for happiness. These urges derive from an opaque blue bottle with a decorative cork. This preserved essence is what correlates greed and raw emotions, enough so that the victim becomes a lifeless husk of their former self. This form of psychic radiation is brought to you by the demented mind of author Robert Essig.

Essig scribes new, ripe and unprocessed emotional open wounds into the readers bloodstream. His approach is via strange, disturbing and unusually weird. Reading The Philth Pig is like listening to a Pink Floyd album while possessing unsavory thoughts. It’s a psychedelic trip down the White Rabbit horror hole that leads to a strange and unexpected place.

Happiness, hope and despair…do you have a valuable emotion that will fill this unusual bottle of spirits? Cos ya know,…some souls taste better than others. A mind-bending Horror Bookworm Recommendation.

The Philth Pig lives off of people’s emotions, don’t get too close or you will fall victim to him. Melissa is visiting home from college thinking she will rekindle her relationship with her parents. Little does she know her family will encounter the Philth pig and he will be leaving them hopeless and dreamless. She will have to find a way to get her parents back before they are completely lost forever. This was such a unique story and it was so interesting. I loved how this story played out and how well it was so engaging. Definitely another great by Essig.

Robert Essig's new book, "The Philth Pig," is a superbly edited novella going for a creepy story rather than a tale of extreme horror. Phil the "Philth Pig," or more accurately, the Filth Pig, is a character that gets under your skin from page one - a really awful character that made me feel claustrophobic and anxious every time he appeared. Essig has created a nasty piece of work; Phil is at times jackhammering into your skull like the worst kind of noise: an emotional vampire-like kind of being who unhesitatingly destroys families and personalities by literally taking their hopes and dreams, and drinking them up till there remains only a human husk seeking death and non-existence. Facing him is another dark character, though human all too human, Melissa, depressed and socially awkward; a real mess. What might happen when these two come across each other? Read "The Philth Pig" and find out! I myself am very thankful for the opportunity to read it!

Bibliophilia Templum Review
https://bibliophiliatemplum.wordpress.com/2024/02/10/the-philth-pig/

He is The Filth Pig, but you can call him Phil, and he wants what you have. But what he takes is far more important than material possessions.

Robert Essig’s The Philth Pig reads like a twisted and creepy fairy tale—Brothers Grimm, not Disney—due to both the story itself and the straightforward, evocative storytelling style Essig employs here. Even the structure is reminiscent of old folk tales, though the setting is firmly in the here and now, and the story is definitely NOT for children.

The Philth Pig is a page-turner, a solid and gripping story with pseudo-vampirism, dark suspense, and brilliant levels of subtext and symbolism. The matter-of-fact presentations of and allusion to things such as greed, addiction, abuse, and eating disorders slaps you with the realization of how very commonplace these things are. Even The Filth Pig himself is representative of something more, something bigger, if you care to see it. If you don’t, it’s still a fun and creepy twisted little story you don’t want to miss!

This is a brilliantly dark and bizarre short story from Robert, different from anything else I've read by him, in the best way!

The Philth Pig, Phil, feeds on human emotions, hopes and dreams, but his favourite is greed. He leaves the people he feeds from behind as mere shells of their former selves, or worse….

People like Melissa and Janet for instance….

After being away at college for a year, Melissa arrives home for a break, but her parents don't seem to care. They're all about money and success and caught up in their own separate lives. Melissa suffers from an eating disorder and she finds some solace in a calming, yet mysterious woman named Diamond that she encounters down on the beach.

When Melissa’s mum, Janet, encounters Phil, she finds herself strangely attracted to him and acting in weird ways, which she later shares with her husband too. But why does Phil seem to fear Melissa?? When the answer is revealed, things take a sinister turn in this weird, haunting, eerie and strangely beautiful tale of addiction and illness.

You really CAN have too much of a good thing….

Melissa is coming home from college to visit her parents. When she arrives her mom is nowhere to be found and her dad "has a thing" he tells her as he looks at his watch and leaves. Some homecoming, and it's been a year since Melissa has returned home.

Her mother does return, and Melissa sees her on the porch, as well as with a strange man.....who is this guy? Why is he with her mother? Does dad know about this?

She confronts her mother, and the strange man hurries away as if he is scared, not scared of being seen with her mother, but actually scared of Melissa.

When Melissa talks to her mother she notices that her mom is in a dream like or drug like trance.......what did this guy do? Why was he here? Melissa also noticed the strange man produced a bottle that he drank from.

This is story of Phil. Who is Phil? What is Phil? Is he a friend of the family? Is he a beach bum who has found solace in Melissa's parents? Is he an angle or devil?

No one knows.

What we do know is that Phil lives to drink out people's hopes and dreams and leave them in a catatonic state, except Melissa.......Melissa is full of pain, and sorrow that Phil cowars at just the sight of her.

Melissa has an eating disorder, hell let's face it she's basically Karen Carpenter, she doesn't have a good home life with her parents, because they are obsessed with greed and living the lifestyle of the rich and famous, and they are trying to instill this into Melissa, and she is fighting them on this, she doesn't want that life.

This is a different type of book for Mr. Essig. I enjoyed it, but I really didn't care about the characters. There is a shroud of mystery around Phil and some other characters, that I felt I never really got the full grasp as to what was happening.

Review of The Philth Pig by Robert Essig. ✍🏼 (NO spoilers, promise!) I do tend to try and make these quick and easy to read so if you want more details just @ me. 🥸

“I’m your worst nightmare incarnate…”

* Imagine if emotions could be consumed like drugs.✨
* The cover alone is insane. Straight up nightmare fuel. Impressive, but sketchy AF. 💀
* Filth Pig feeds off joy and happiness / hope and dreams. && greed. Phil loves greed. 🙃
* Fast paced which is a love for me.
* Author also uses amazingly detailed language so even though it’s fast paced, you’re able to get a lot of character development and plot / story. 🤌🏼
* Invokes emotions and relatability in a lot of areas. Whether it’s a dysfunctional family, depression, addiction etc.
* Zero harm to any animals or children for those who have an aversion to reading that kind of stuff, which makes this a solid candidate for a vast audience in the horror book community.
* Don’t get me wrong though. It’s fked up and not for the faint of heart. 😅

“…without hope and dreams, one will lose the will to live”

Book releases February 6th but is available for preorder now!

Easy four star read for me.

Phil is watching. Phil is waiting. Phil wants your hopes and dreams. He wants to feel all the joy that you feel. It gives him life. Unless you're Melissa, the depressed college student whose family the filth pig has decided is his next target. And once you're in his sights, there's no escaping him. While dealing with college life, an eating disorder, and her own personal demons, Melissa also has to watch her parents succumb to the filth pig. Watching them wither away as she tries to figure out how to stop this from happening. Will she be able to help them? You'll just have to read and find out!
I did thoroughly enjoy the book and it made for a good "I'm rotting in my bed" Sunday. While I did enjoy following the main character and her family, the parts with Phil the Filth Pig made me feel slightly suffocated. He brings a presence of just doom and gloom that just made me go 😬. The authour really did a good job at making you feel like Phil was there standing, watching while you're reading what is happening.
I'd like to thank Mr. Essig for letting me be an ARC reader for this book. I am now going to go snatch a few of his other books that have peaked my interest, while patiently waiting for his next!

Hahaha okay, as a Ministry fan, I couldn’t help but picture Phil as Al Jourgensen.

Now that that’s out of the way…

The Philth Pig is definitely an interesting read.
It’s really hard to think of the words to describe it, without giving too much away.

Right off the bat, if you’re familiar with Essig’s other works, do not go into this expecting extreme or splatter.
In terms of viscera, this one’s mighty tame.
This story is far more existential, and liminal.
I feel like it would cater well to the New Adult reader demographic (18-25).

This is the tale of a hope fiend, in a world full of dreamers, all searching for their own means of escapism.

If you’re looking for a coming of age story about a family whom any therapist would love to have in the books for family sessions on account of the hundreds of billable hours it would take to iron out just a couple of kinks in their dysfunctional dynamic, with a pseudo-supranatural twist, then this one could be for you .

Philth Pig by Robert Essig
This was not what I was expecting when I first started this story but I think it’s brilliant and it deals with people’s raw emotions…… the philth pig has somehow managed (and I would love to know how he acquired this ability) to be able to extract emotion, hopes and dreams from people and he is then able to use these like illicit drugs….. some more potent than others and need to be used in different ways…. Happiness is best to drink like alcohol. Hopes and dreams are a bit stronger so Phil has those in pill form, while the strongest and, of course, his favourite… Greed can only be injected straight into the bloodstream like opioids….. The only thing he can’t handle is depression and hopelessness.
I had a lot of fun with this story.
Loved the nod to Ministry 🤘
4 out of 5 syringes full of Greed from me….💉💉💉💉

This is my third book I've read from Robert Essig. While "This Damned House" and "This Damned House" simply drops you into horrific situations, I found "The Philth Pig" eases you into the story.

Overall, in such a short read, I found the book to have more depth in character development and easily became invested in the main character, Melissa. Also, the story has a weird, brutal twist on addiction and what it does to people and families.

The Philth Pig, or Phil, is a disturbing take of Colin Roberson from "What We Do in the Shadows". Phil is the guy.... vampire.... god... or whatever he is... that has no regard for human life and will do anything for his next fix of dreams, hopes, and worse of all, greed.

By no means did I find the story gory and "gross", it is still a book you should put in your TBR pile. It was a quick, fun read I couldn't put down.

The philth pig is like a terrible Monday morning, sapping all the life, energy, emotions and dreams out of you.
This was an original idea and even though there wasn’t the usual graphic depravity we know and love from this author the story was still disturbing as hell. I got through the entire thing in one sitting and found it completely captivating. The characters were well written and so easy to hate and we all certainly know couples like Janet and Mel. There is not one thing I have read by this author that didn’t grip me by the balls and not let go until the end.

This throws you right in with The Philth Pig and what happens when he takes what he wants. After that you follow a family and the mother is filled with hopes and dreams and The Philth Pig needs more of it. He puts people in sort of a trance to get what he wants from people. Although not every emotion is for The Philth Pig and he finds someone that doesn't have what he wants. The way The Philth Pig described the emotions he was addicted to and his character in general had me hooked to this story.

What a great twisted, fun little story this was!

Watch out, the Filth Pig or Phil for short, is watching and waiting to take your hopes and dreams...don't let him get too close, though his vile appearance doesn't have any affect on his swooning, he will take everything from you...

I really enjoyed this one, I have read a couple of Robert's other books and this one was a little different, but kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next! I read this pretty quick, I would even read it between clients at work 😉 as I didn't want to put it down! 😂

I really enjoyed this book. It was slightly off kilter, in a good way. Kinda creepy in a fairytale way. A story to talk about around a campfire. Little old school, which is totally my thing. Very glad I had the chance to read it. Robert Essig always makes me think when I read his books.

An excellent read! This is a very unique tale with amazing descriptions. I like the mental health bent, along with corporate American greed. Most of the characters have great depth. I wished for more development of Melissa's parents, but overall, it was a wonderful story.

Showing the power of one’s hopes and dreams, and the danger of letting greed consume you, the Philth Pig is an addicting fast paced read.

The personification of an emotional vampire that Robert Essig weaved instilled such unease and anxiety at each appearance. Although a detestable character, I was so intrigued by him that I was unable to put this down. The fear of losing all hopes and dreams, and essentially ones self, leaves such a hollow feeling that this book showcases it superbly!

“I’m your worst nightmare incarnate, buddy....I’ll be sleeping good tonight on your hopes and dreams, man.”

This was a great quick little read. A very unique story.

While this is no where near any form of horror I have personally read. Its fear of hoplessness, losing all your hopes and dreams, dispair. The Philth Pig will consume all you have ever dreamt of, any form of joy and happiness you have.

Phil is a vile man that survives by feasting on your essence, striping one down until all that is left a husk of ones former self. How can you go on without hope?

If you want a quick despairing story to fill your happy little heart, this is definitely your book.
