Against all odds, this middle-grade Godzilla book gave an actual STORY ARC to both its preteen protagonist and the titular monster himself. About half the runtime is spent on epic monster fights (none of which were particularly thrilling because you KNOW that Toho wouldn't have given Random House the freedom to actually kill any of its mainline monsters), but the action beats are clean and exciting, and there are enough moments of trippy, psychic-kid weirdness to give this story a real Showa Era flair without taking things too far into All Monsters Attack-style kiddishness. It's not a perfect piece of fiction, but it accomplishes exactly what it wants to do in just over 100 pages. Plus, Godzilla and Anguirus have a kaiju bromance for the ages.

this was more fun than it had a right to be. Godzilla and the monster island gang against King Gidorah. The action sequences were really well done. The kid friendly stuff? Not so much, but it was to the point and cool

Being the final entry in Ciencin's run of Godzilla books, it's a delicious treat that he delivered a more or less nonstop monster romp.

Was a fun trip down memory lane to read a book I used to live for. I'm such a Godzilla geek. :) The story was overly simple, of course, since it's for middle-schoolers and the author loved the word "suddenly". It was all very SUDDENLY shocking. lol
