A.R. writes speculative fiction built around big “what ifs,” combining high-concept ideas with fast-paced, layered storytelling. His novels aim to entertain first, while inspiring curiosity and leaving readers with questions that linger long after the final chapter. He lives in Shrewsbury, England, and finds inspiration in music, travel, and long walks in the hills.
Leveller is a fast paced, fun, multidimensional, sci-fi spy thriller. Exciting and entertaining, this book is an easy read which keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what is going to happen next.
The science fiction in this book is not too complicated to understand, though I did get a little lost in a couple of places. The characters were well developed and the world building was good, considering there were multiple dimensions the author was writing about.
I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyed reading it. I would definitely recommend for any spy thriller fans, as well as sci fi fans. Great read!
I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Leveller is an enthralling espionage saga that resurrects the timeless allure of classic spy narratives while deftly steering clear of mere nostalgic rehashing. A.R. Lerwill's narrative breaches boundaries, delving into the realm of quantum physics with a finesse that dabs into the depths of moral perplexities with a backdrop of catastrophic terrorist threats.
At the core of this story is a protagonist whose allure lies not only in his steely resolve and unwavering focus on the mission but also in the haunting spectre of his past, lending an empathetic vulnerability that kept me on the edge, revealing the precarious balance between success and failure. Lerwill portrays a refreshing approach of the typical classic agents into a classic modern blend of James Bond and Jason Bourne, grappling with external adversaries and his own inner demons as he travels the multiverse.
The range of characters woven across these diverse realities makes you really ponder the ‘what if’s’ of life, offering a kaleidoscopic exploration of identity and possibility. Lerwill's narrative allows readers to traverse the myriad facets of the protagonist's psyche through encounters with alternative versions of himself, each a compelling reflection of the vulnerable complexities faced in human nature.
While grounded in real-world theories of quantum physics, Lerwill's approach strikes a delicate balance between intellectual plausibility with non-lamen accessibility. The result is a narrative that brings you forward with continuous momentum, with twists and turns infused with tension as personal and geopolitical stakes gradually merge in a compelling chase across the multiverse.
I love the storytelling of Leveller, a seamless blend of science and quantum theories with pulse-pounding espionage that offers a gripping fiction tale, while jumping straight to google to read more behind the science! It is exhilarating and thought provoking. A lovely little gem of a read to find!
It has been a really long time since I read a spy thriller. I don't even remember the last book that I read of this sub-genre. All that changed quickly when I picked up this spy science fiction.
The main plot revolves around the attempt to uncover the terrorist organization- Leveller, through an united attempt by the agents of a British secret intelligence service. Interestingly, the leader of this terrorist group is hiding somewhere in an alternate reality. Now, it's up to the agents to race against time and reality before it's too late.
Agent Blake has to go undercover and travel through different realities to catch the culprit. Although he has the necessary equipments to help him, Agent Blake has very little knowledge of the multiverse and a single misstep could cost him his life. To further complicate things, the alternate realities can also impact one's perspectives and points of view.
There were many twists and turns throughout the story that added to the thrilling aspect. When I thought I had it all figured out, suddenly there would be a new turn of event that would change the entire course of action!
For me personally, more than the plot, it was the characters that kept me hooked. That is not to say that the plot is boring. I loved the honest portrayal of Agent Jackson Blake. By no means is he a perfect person, he has his share of weaknesses and traumas that he deals with in his day-to-day life. This makes him more humane and easier to empathize with. Apart from his characters, the supporting characters including Caroll, Penrose, Tegmark, and in fact, the main antagonist, too were well-fleshed out.
Overall, this book was a great innovative and unique take on the good old espionage stories.
'Leveller' by A.R. Lerwill takes readers on a thrilling ride through the streets of London in a gripping spy story. As someone who doesn't typically gravitate towards this genre, I was drawn in by the intrigue and couldn't resist delving into this advanced reader copy. The pacing of the novel is expertly crafted, maintaining a pulse-pounding rhythm that kept me on edge. While there were moments where the momentum wavered slightly, the compelling cliffhangers and page-turning tactics employed by the author kept me going, propelled forward by the need to uncover the twists and turns of the plot. Lerwill's storytelling shines through, making 'Leveller' a must-read for fans of spy thrillers and anyone looking for an exhilarating literary escape into the world of espionage, in this dimension and beyond.
Leveller is an avant-garde spy thriller that is filled with exciting pursuit or chase scenes interspersed periodically with science fiction action. The writer has a fertile and prolific imagination to be able to come up with these concepts/scenarios- nanobots absorbing earth's electromagnetic energy, the existence of variants in other realities and man's ability to transverse other dimensions via the quantum migrator.
Field agents Blake Jackson, Carroll and Penrose are members of a British secret intelligence service that help search for Leveller, a terrorist group led by ex-agent George Fielding who is threatening to expose the classified organization and thereby in the process endangering the world. The agents later discovered the truth behind Fielding's unfair dismissal and rebellion against the corrupt restricted and undisclosed government agency who operates for the benefit of the few.
This narrative is a a straightforward portrayal of how the art of espionage could possibly adapt to new, experimental and futuristic technologies and advancements.
I received a copy of this novel from Voracious Readers Only. I really enjoyed this book, especially since the main character, Jackson, has the ability to travel through the multiverse with the use of a quantum computer. Jackson is employed with a top secret agency and his job is to ensure stability across all the multiverses that are members of the agency. The stability is threatened when one of the agency’s members wants to make the public aware of how much control the agency has over everyone’s lives.
I couldn't put this book down! From the very first page, I was captivated by the suspenseful plot and the well-developed characters. The author has a talent for building tension and keeping readers guessing until the very end.
The pacing is perfect, with twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout. I found myself staying up late into the night, eager to uncover the next clue in this thrilling mystery. The writing is sharp and engaging, pulling you into the story from the start.
Very readable, a good story on many levels. I don't usually read sci-fi but this kept me guessing. Maybe it was the back story about the family which kept me hooked? (Being vague so as not to spoil it for new readers).
Ok so, I read this as an ARC. I didn’t know what to expect and spy type books aren’t my usual reads.
Jackson Blake has to go undercover following an attack on London. A new threat has arisen… using cutting edge quantum technology to expose a covert operation. Blake has to battle internal conflicts, test his endurance and challenge his own perceptions… just who or what is the Leveller?
