NOTE TO READERS Dark Layers has been merged into 2 books. Volume 1 & 2 are now Part One. Volume 3 & 4 are now Part Two. Prepare to be obsessed and possessed by the most unprecedented love. Law graduate Anile has recently finished university. She's now ready to venture into the working world. Anile has suffered two discriminating and scrutinizing interviews but still remains sanguine with her attitude. She refuses to let anyone bring her down. She reaches Darks Lawyers for her third interview - she's optimistic, but nervous. While waiting for her interview, she meets a man who's dangerously beautiful. He's enigmatic, prepossessing and smart beyond any of her expectations - she has no idea who he really is, and she runs out of time before she can find out his name. Anile inevitably finds him - Elijah Darks. He wants to possess her and lure her into darkness - he wants to indulge in his desires, as well as show Anile her own. Are his intentions good or bad - is he good or bad? He has secrets, he has an agenda, but is there more to his obsession with Anile than meets the eye? She cannot seem to find any information about him, he's reticent - and so is the internet - but she cannot help her desire for him, regardless of the unknown. The danger, love, and trust issues ahead of her life are going to be challenging - will exploring a deviant man be the making or breaking of her?
Anile is a confused chit who considers herself strong, but is easily manipulated and her anger is easily diffused.
Mr. Dark is dangerous and serial-killer stuff-you-in-my-refrigerated-closet scary and did not contain an ounce of sexiness. Dude needed to be on a leash.
This read was awkward from the very beginning and the main reason for that was that the characters were not written consistently. Anile was all over the place, a mass of contradiction, just like the writing itself.
The author needed to let this one stew and flesh out the characters...a lot. The plot, if it could be called that, was very thin.
I honestly can not recommend this to anyone in its current state.

Anile Gooden begins working at the law firm of the Elijah Darks. His last name is perfect…he is so very dark and mysterious. She is a young woman who appears to be confident and comfortable in her own skin. Their chemistry is undeniable. Their voices are strong, distinct and reveal their individual personalities. The author’s use of mythology is clever and adds an interesting layer to the novel. Are Anile and Elijah destined to be together or will it end like many Greek tragedies? What should you read after Fifty Shades? Dark Layers!
The author has been promoting this book across lots of different Amazon forums (against the rules by the way!) and so when she listed it for free I downloaded it to see if it was as great as she was telling us. It's not.
I'm confused as to what genre it is as it had elements of fantasy (and is listed under fantasy/fairy genre), paranormal (at one point I thought Elijah/Mr Darks was supposed to be a Vampire seeing as the heroine describes him as being two foot taller than her own five foot, 6 inches!) and Erotica seeing as there are hints of him being a Dom!
This book was not for me. It is very amateurish in the writing and there are lots of editing issues. At one point Anile (the heroine) is standing by the lifts when Mr Darks approaches her and makes her jump so she drops her phone and briefcase. He catches her phone but then it says "I watch this gorgeous man pull his trousers up as he leans down to pick up my briefcase". Sorry, but that had me laughing out loud!
This is Vol 1. There are many more volumes to come but this first volume did not interest me enough to complete the story.
Did I read a different book to everyone else? Where to start..... I didn't like the writing style, it seemed very jumpy, there was no character depth or development and lots of strange lines "his hands were soft but alpha"!!!!! and to be honest apart from the fifty shade bits I wasn't sure what I was reading. I just don't understand, this book has 4 reviews and they're all 5 star I must seriously be missing something, I was going to quit 20% in but I carried on since all the reviews were so good, I admit I ended up skimming it just to get to the end. I'm assuming it's me since I'm the odd one out but I just don't get it, at least it was free.
Aww god.. where do i start....i started off thinking hmmm maybe its going to be a bit like 50 shades of gray....BUT actually as you get to know a bit more about Mr Darks your like "nope i was wrong he's nothing like him" i do think there are similar bits but it doesn't bother me at all!
Some of my favorite bits so far I've highlighted are:
"i hope to god that bas**rd does not work there all the time, i doubt i would last a day!" - I love that she hates him!
"i constantly pace, back and forth but finally the lift pings open. I stand frozen as Mr Darks eyes burn into me" - OMG Moment!
"these are all qualities i like in my woman, not that i have had the pleasure of my desired woman, until you"
"I stopped dead, stupefied and realize there is a dress code. Every woman is in red and every man in black..... and i am bloody dressed in white" - OH MY GOD....i was pacing around my living room screaming "oh my god, no way, cant believe it" lol i could have died for Anile!
Well i'm finished!
Elijah annoyed me the first half of the book (sometimes hated how c**ky he seemed), but towards the end when Anile found out a bit more about him i thought just like Anile did 'this is why, he is, the way he is'
The ending - oh god - i loved it but i need to know more.... i was SHOCKED when he took her where he did!!! but then what he did at the very end i was sad all over again for Anile just when she finally stopped fighting him!
The end of the books showed volume 2 in April and i hope so i cant wait!!! X x
3.5 stars for me. I was intrigued, it was different and strange in a good way. I liked Anile and was captivated by the weirdness of her new place of work. Not sure why she didn't twig her P.A is Mr Dark's wife!!! That threw me off course as she is supposed to be highly intelligent!? Maybe the name is just a coincidence but I suspect not.
A couple of minor editing errors, " fillet stake" !!!! Being the worst offender.
I liked the idea of the Greek gods and goddesses and the chest board effect of his offices. Not quite sure the significance of them all wearing white and then the party where she chooses to wear white and turn up with Derek!!! Not quite sure where he is gonna fit in with all of this!! I kept thinking maybe he works for Mr dark??
I would like to read the second part as it stopped very abruptly, I usually read full length books so found it v short but held my interest enough to want to know what happens next.
I really liked this book. Lovable characters. The only thing is in some parts of the book it lost me but I kept reading and joined the dots by myself. I was kindly sent if for free in exchange for a honest review. I am excited for the next volume!
*this book contains mature subject material (i.e., politics, symbolism, religion, sexually suggestive comments, BDSM, explicit scenes, etc.) and is intended for an older audience with an open-mind.
Wow.
Just wow.
There isn’t really much to say about the first book in A.L. Gray’s “Dark Layers” series except that it isn’t at all what I expected. At first, I was a little skeptical because it seemed to start off similar to “Fifty Shades” but it quickly took a turn and pulled you along.
Anile Gooden and Elijah Darks are two amazingly developed characters that instantly have you dying to learn more about them from the moment you begin reading. Anile is your typical sweet, innocent, gorgeous blonde trying to make her way through the world. She’s strong, witty, and definitely hiding something. Elijah is the handsome, mysterious, temperamental billionaire every woman wishes she had. He has a captivating mind that works in cryptic ways and is most definitely haunted by something. Together, they are just this incredibly energized pair, full of constant ups and downs and in-betweens.
Gray writes the story in a way that really makes you wonder what kind of person Elijah is through his interesting choice in quotes, his preference in decor, and his constant mood-swings. You also can’t help but wonder just what it is about Anile that has Elijah so enthralled (and why it isn’t you that he is completely taken by…come on, just for once let it be me?). As much as I hate his mood-swings because I just want him to be the perfect, caring, loving man that he is, Elijah’s multiple personalities seem to dig deep into his past and his haunting secrets, making him that much more desirable. The moments where his loving mood comes out, it is normal to be completely jealous of Anile because you’ll want to be on the receiving end of those swoon-worthy comments and sexual suggestions. Trust me. Which brings me back to my question: Why Anile and not me?
The setting takes place in London, England, and the writing style reflects that through the vocabulary. If you’re familiar with common English terms, you should be fine. However, if you’re not used to the way that the English speak or some of the words they use, like ‘lift’ and ‘underground’, then you may need a dictionary near by. Also, this means Elijah has an accent. An English accent. A very sexy and mouth-wateringly mesmerizing English accent. There are quite a few mythological references throughout the book, specifically the Greek gods and goddesses, and some background knowledge of them would be recommended. I must admit, I had to search a few of the names myself. If you don’t search the names, some things might not make sense to you at all, and because I gave up constantly searching for the significance of the gods and goddesses after a while, I feel that it may have compromised the overall significance of having them there in the first place. This is also the reason why I did not rate it a full five stars. Had A.L. Gray included some background about the mythological beings instead of having the reader research them, it would have been an easy five stars.
Overall, I loved “Dark Layers (Volume One)” as I could not put it down…not even for a minute or two. I literally began it this morning on the way to class and finished it on the way home. I’m actually about to begin “Dark Layers (Volume Two)" because I don’t think I can wait until tomorrow to see what Anile and Elijah have in store. It was literally a page-turner and kept me intrigued with every single page because it isn’t at all what you would expect. There are just so many themes and concepts that A.L. Gray took risks with and I believe they did her and “Dark Layers” great justice, giving the story those twists and turns that make it what it is.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
From very early I was not enjoying this book. At first I was not quite sure why. The characters' choice of words and behaviors all seemed odd. Like a poorly acted play.
I resisted making a negative review from early so that I wouldn't have to eat any words. 50% into the book nothing has changed. I think the author tried to present Mr Darks as being a mercurial deep character. Instead to me he just came across as confused and disjointed. Anile's transitions from meek and scared of him to sassy smart-mouthed equal were also weird. There were many times I felt this was a bad imitation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Right down to referring to genitals as "down there"
Besides the leads, other relationships also seemed to make no sense.
The last scene which I believe was intended to be hightened drama was just unreal it lacked emotion and descriptions to make the story tangible.
All in all, this story failed to get me lost in the fiction.... or carried away with the characters. I always knew I was reading a book.
This book ends with a cliffhanger. I do not intended to read the sequel.
Well WOW!!!! Not sure where to go from there, I am sort of feeling this is story is crossover between 50 shades of grey, Bared to you and Beautiful bastard. what a roller coaster ride it gave. Anile Gooden has been looking for a job for hat seems is forever, she never imagined she would get a phone call from Dark Lawyers. She arrives for her interview and heads into the cafeteria and comes face to face with a man, a man that possesses her from that moment. Never imagining she would see him again... And there he was Elijah Dark, head of Dark Lawyers in the interview she had come for. being a total ass he asks her 2 questions and then dismisses her. Feeling deflated Anile leaves the interview and ends up with her best friend drunk and passed out for the weekend. Monday morning Anile gets the phone call she was hoping for but didn't think would ever come. A job offer for not 1 but 2 companies, with the decision taken out if her hands she begins working at Dark Lawyers and begins the extremely hot sexual tension between her and Elijah. He had the fucked up past but cannot move on from Anile, and she is the innocent called to him. But instead of the girl who just submits to him she uses her attitude, smart mouth and quick wit to get to Elijah. This drives him insane so he chasses her more, doing crazy things at work like promoting her after 1 week. They decide to go out together and Elijah shows Anile what he is really about.... and then..... oh God it ends!!!! Although this is an erotic novel it keeps you in suspense with so much sexual tension right to the very end... This is quite a good start to what is going to be a 4 part series and this finishes with a cliffhanger, and I hate those so now I must wait....
If you loved Fifty Shades of Grey, then you will love this. “Dark Layers” By A.L. Grey brings a whole new world of passion to the table!
Unemployed Blonde Goddess ‘Anile Gooden’ with her smart mouth and quick wit has recently finished studying law and enters the world of law and high conviction rates. An interview for an internship with the esteemed “Darks Lawyers” is about to turn Anile’s life completely upside-down. Anile tries to keep her personal life and business in separate minds but a certain man keeps trying to draw her into the dark.
The dark-haired God Mr. Elijah Darks is a man with many secrets. He comes across as hard and ruthless, especially in the law industry, is struck blind when Miss Gooden comes for an interview for an internship with his company! He is dark and mysterious and harder to figure out, but one thing is for certain, “The Bastard of Law” is about to be shocked right down to his core when Anile doesn’t bow down like the rest.
This book was funny and witty, with highs and lows guaranteed to feel like a rollercoaster ride. Both characters are strong-willed with sharp tongues, yet when brought together, are reduced to tongue-tied teenagers. Each chapter reveals a little more (but not much) with unexpected events and news to unfold that will immediately captured anyone’s attention. I was a goner from the very first chapter, to the point where I just could not put the book down, and before I knew it, I had already reached the last page! New secrets and unexplored areas are bound to keep you hanging with only the next volume to answer all your questions.
I would like to state that I have read the edited Dark Layers. I am writing this because I have seen a lot of conflict about this book which made me desperately intrigued.
This was recommended by a friend (Kerry if you read this ;-)I did it for you lol) for what to read after fifty shades.
I don't really see much resemblance of fifty shades if I am honest, E L James does not have dibs on BDSM. If anything, I think it is more like Devils Advocate.
Smart, smart story, and hats off to the writer for having the guts to publish such a controversial novel regarding the Freemasons/exploited sex/men in power.
I loved the mythology and Elijah's dark side. He is obviously serial killer material but who does not love a bad boy and you can see that he will never hurt Anile, when you get to the end of course. Anile is frustrating because at times she seems so strong but crumbles when it comes to Elijah - but the hints of mind control are there. I found so much of this funny, Anile's mind is wild at times and the way she fights with herself is just outrageous. Because it is so upbeat with funny quotes, when it comes to the dark and sad parts, I really felt sad and almost cried, especially when Elijah opened up about his mother.
I am an English teacher and I have to say, the unedited book may have been bad for mistakes, but I did not find one spelling mistake. I will be reading Volume 2, definitely, and have recommended it to my friends.(again, for you Kerry) The only bad thing, it is short but for 87p on my kindle app, who's bitching lol
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review and Wow....I just finished the book. My thoughts are actually jumbled. Intriguing, confusing, and maddening. Some of the reviews seem harsh but if we all liked the same thing the world would be boring. This particular book is not my cup of tea but like I said it is intriguing with a little mystery thrown in. The ending will leave you hanging so if your like me you will continue to read to figure it out. Two people with a immediate attraction who are determined to sabotage any relationship from the start, and the fight begins. Who win win? Who will lose? What's really going on? Who's who? I like to think all this is done for a purpose so I will continue to read in hopes the author will have some mercy and provide myself and others with some answers. A lot of unknowns in the end or "I need to stop over analyzing things".
I would say this is a 3.5, I loved that anile was very confident with herself and thought she was with everyone else. I loved how she and Elijah fought back and forth , it made it interesting. I wish we had ve known a little more about each character before we jumped to to the house of sex as she called it. I feel like the story just jumped around a lot never really letting me really know what was going on. She went from law student, no job, to assistant secretarial position to a full blown law position. You knew that they were infatuated with each other from the beginning but he jumped into everything not letting her build up to anything. Elijah had a lot of dark layers. I couldn't put the book down and can't wait to find out what happens next. Thank you for allowing me read this for an honest review..
I got a copy of this book from the author for read and review ^^
To start my review, I would say this is quite an enjoyable read
But there's cliches everywhere ~Classic alpha male who has authority and is somehow very rich and is dominant ~The main male char somehow a control freak and is somehow broken/have a dark side (sounds familiar) ~Typical love at 1st sight ~Main female char who also somehow gets attracted to the male char but denies her feelings at first
But nonetheless I would say that this book is an enjoyable read and it has a quite good and interesting plot (not just always sex, sex and sex) If you look past the cliches, this book is somehow quite good and interesting.
Loved it… I can relate to the character (Anile) I think this is why I loved it so much - her not being close with her parents, not wanting to talk about them, keeping them completely separated, out of her business and her personal life. Then you have Mr. Darks. I haven’t quite figured this character out yet. I am trying to figure out who Jane Doe is also. The book is very addictive; you want to get through it so you can move on to the next one, so you can figure out these questions. Book one leaves you with so many questions that you are almost desperate to get right onto book 2!
I received this book in return for my honest review.
I cannot say that I hate this book because it kept leaving me wanting more after every chapter. But I will say it is not my absolute favorite book. I love the bantering back and forth between Anile and Elijah. Anile is not afraid to tell him what she is thinking or feeling and keeps him on his toes.
Waiting for Volume 2 to come out to see where things go from here!! Even tho I am not in love with this book it has still left me wondering what is next and i hate being left in suspense :-)
overall i liked it, an intriguing read looking forward to v2
The plot i did think was going very fsog at the start but did come into its own. I also thought Mr Dark may have a paranormal at one point with his reflexes & I didn't get how she went from a reception style desk to her own office, especially after storming off after the dress ball/event, but Mr dark being a billionaire and the boss can do what he wishes i suppose
I liked the banter between Anile and Elijah but felt their characters weren't truly developed. I had to consult the dictionary a few times:-D I found myself skimming the text in some areas but It's seems that Master is dark, and that intrigues me. I would be interested in reading the completed book. At this point, I'm just not invested in their characters/lives.
I can see there are a lot of mixed reviews on here and I guess it is one of those novels you either love or hate. It was recommended by one of the review sites and I took the plunge. So glad that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next one which means a weekend of skipping the housework!
Dark Layers is a good title for this book because there is so much going on and many things are not quite what they seem. I like the erotic elements to the story but I also thought the plot was good as well in addition to liking the main characters. I will be catching up with the other books in the series!
Found this on FanFiction. It's a great book. The tension between Elijah and Anile is heavy. There's a big mystery behind Elijah. You won't be able to put this book aside. And the story continues. Can't wait to find out everything behind Elijah and see what happens between him and Anile.
This was a very good book. It leaves you wondering. Not really sure what Mr Dark is yet and I really want to know where the story goes. Really enjoyed reading this one.
