I just found out this series was discontinued 😭😭. When u see all the slop that's easily getting published today this is so disheartening, like sure there's no plot to speak of this is about 2 high school girls falling in love but the art style, the simple but cute story, and the eccentric endearing characters are all worth it. I hope that now that 7s has taken over the official translation the author can come back to it in time

Una comedia romántica lindísima que tenía muchas ganas de leer. Iba sin expectativas y sin saber muy bien de qué trataba (no leí la sinopsis previamente) y al final me encantó. Lo disfruté muchísimo y solo quiero saber cómo se va a desarrollar la historia de amor de estas dos personitas tan bonitas.

This is an interesting take on a yuri story. It’s using a unique setting and a little dash of some titles we’ve seen before to come up with something that reflects the time period it is set in, yet with a modern perspective.
Basically, this reminded me a lot of other ‘bad girl and a guy’ stories, like I Belong to the Baddest Girl in School especially, except the guy here is a lot more into what the delinquent is putting down. And the guy’s a girl.
(It’s also a nice touch since those ‘bad girl’ stories tend to have a yuri subplot where the other girl loses. This one ends up having it both ways.)
Atsuko is a known delinquent, with a reputation spanning many a school. Riri is the transfer student of the title and she gets a real kick out of having Atsuko read out cute words (I can appreciate her fondness for the juxtaposition).
Yet Riri really enjoys Atsuko’s company, not flinching at the notion of getting closer when somebody raises it. And Atsuko isn’t putting up with that word game for no reason, quickly realizing that what she thinks of Riri is a bit stronger than friend-level.
Too bad that this is the 1980’s and even the dictionary doesn’t have your back when it comes to same-sex romance. We don’t really get much farther than the initial idea that these two want something more, so the question is how it will follow through.
And that’s a big question. There’s a certain level of unreality to this story, with rival bands of toughs coming to challenge Atsuko and the day being saved by rice balls, etc.
That stuff is fun, but it doesn’t make for anything new if they use that exaggerated nature to just get away with yuri and not examine it in context of the setting. It’s been years, but the ending of Goodbye, My Rose Garden still stings.
Still, I like it as a concept and it has more under the hood than just being a yuri story. I like how different Riri and Atsuko appear as designs, as if they have deliberately contrasting art styles. Riri feels like she missed the bus to the set of Ranma 1/2, while Atsuko looks like she’s ready to go six rounds with Saki from Sukeban Deka.
For every story beat that feels stale - the ‘avoid talking because reasons’ trope is rarely one that I find appealing - it has something to recommend it. The pool scene is a quiet moment and feels like the most honest Atsuko and Riri get with one another. There’s a very silly plot about a haunted room too.
This is a good story about opposites attracting that has a unique setting and two well-realized lead characters. I think it’s good either way, but to reach the level of great it’ll need to lean into its setting for more than just fashion and really dig into the prejudice of the era.
3.5 stars - rounding down because I want to see what it makes of itself before I wholeheartedly recommend it, but it’s not a bad start, whatever happens.

Two girls who couldn't be further apart in looks and personality fall in love.
All in all, I desperately need the second volume! I want to see these two girls get closer. Not to mention the next cover looks so much fun! All in all, I would highly recommend this adorable yuri - F/F romance to everyone. It is so cute, so fun!

This was so cute and I absolutely loved the art style, it gave me such a nostalgic vibe for the 80s and 90s style manga! And it was so so fun getting a wlw version of the scary untouchable delinquent falling for the sweet MC trope 🥺

Riri Kanzaki has an idea: Yank a spitfire butch headlong into the realm of the cute. And why not? She's got nothing to lose.
THE DELINQUENT AND THE TRANSFER STUDENT v1 is all parts charming. The manga's author knows exactly what they're doing: proximity romance, contrasting personalities, low-stakes drama, snappy humor, and two girls on the precipice of love. Readers will find little new about the book's general premise: nudging together a pixie-energy transfer student (Riri) and a tough-as-nails school delinquent (Atsuko Nagumo). But the execution is serene and the story's slow-burn thematic reveal is worth the wait.
Riri latches onto Atsuko early. Getting the tough girl to say cute things, sharing lunch boxes, and nagging the delinquent to protect her while they clean a storage room as punishment are all well within the boundaries of young romance. Riri's behavior is annoying, but the author has a knack for playing up the girl's obsessiveness for well-timed comedy (e.g., the storage closet is rumored to house ghosts, and Riri freaks out at every single turn).
As for Atsuko, readers are treated to an increasingly dimensional character. Yes, Riri is the primary point-of-view character, but not by much. Getting more adorable lesbian stories is a sign that nature is healing actually.
This was such a joy to read.
I really enjoy stories that seek to remind readers that being queer is not a “new thing”. There have always been queer folk. It’s a lovely message.
Set in the Japan in the 1980’s, this story follows transfer student Kanzaki Riri and noted delinquent Atsuko. From the start, Riri is OBSESSED with Atsuko—and, though a bit taken aback by Riri’s enthusiasm, Atsuko clearly is developing a soft spot for this sweet girl who only seems to want to listen to Atsuko say the cutest words.
Again, super lovely. An all-around charming story. There’s no weird fetishy stuff either. I’m hopeful we’ll get more glimpses into what female counter-culture looked like during this time as well.
Would definitely recommend for readers who enjoy a fluffy, light queer romance series with a historical fiction element to it~

the delinquent and the transfer student is genuinely one of the best things i've read all year! i heavilyyyyy recommend it, especially if you like stories about queer girls! i'm so excited to read the rest of the volumes of the series; i am devastated to hear that the series is only three volumes long because it got "canceled," though :( i'm glad there's a conclusive ending (from what i've heard), but i'm sad it wasn't popular enough to warrant more volumes. it's truly a gem!!
atsuko and kanzaki's budding friendship (and eventual romance) is so hilarious and sweet; they managed to make me go "awww" and laugh aloud so much while reading! and the art style, oh my gosh!! it's truly so lovely. (and some of the art is so funny!) i just love the homage to retro 80s anime/manga. everything about this series is perfect <3

Je suis tombée sous le charme de ces deux filles si différentes, mais mignonnes chacune à leur façon. Chaque chapitre raconte une partie de leur relation: on commence dans le présent, puis on explore comment elles se sont rencontrées, pour terminer le tome 1 avec un regard sur ce qu'elles désirent pour le futur.
Il y a un petit quelque chose d'irréaliste bien sûr, propre au style furyo où la racaille l'emporte avec la force de son poing, mais on joue justement avec ce paradoxe de la délinquante au grand coeur, ce que comprend très vite Kanzaki. J'ai eu le coeur un peu serré quand Atsuko cherche le sens du mot "amour" dans le dictionnaire...
Bref, une belle surprise. Aussi adorable que Sasaki & Miyano, mais pimenté de quelques combats!

Creo que es de esas lecturas que es mejor ir sin expectativas, por otros comentarios tengo la sensación que el hype les ha pasado factura, a veces sobretodo con los yuris se crean muchas expectativas y lo entiendo, ojalá publiquen cada vez más y no pasen estás cosas. Yo lo único que sabía es que eran momentos de su día a día y que era una lectura ligera y la verdad es que la he disfrutado mucho. Si eres una persona que disfruta de ese tipo de lecturas, seguro que te gusta!

My friend Tom is an avid manga reader. I asked him to give me a book that he did not think I would ever read in a million years. He gave me this book. Kanzaki Riri (transfer student) and Atsuko (delinquent) form a relationship that is both confusing and exciting. This yuri (female bonding) story takes place in Japanese high school in the 1980’s. I had heard about the yuri genre from other friends. My rating is not based on personal perspective (heterosexual male) but the very interesting way a relationship like this had to have been navigated during this time/place.
