Father Factor: American Christian Men on Fatherhood and Faith

Rate this book
Father Factor explores the intersection between faith and fatherhood, probing the resonance and dissonance created when men examine fatherhood in all its permutations, and how it is informed by and informs their faith.

There are a wide variety of Christian faith perspectives represented in the book and many ethnicities. The contributors include ministers, professors, a real estate agent, an actor, nonprofit leaders, stay-at-home dads, and a call center representative, from locations as far apart as Honolulu, HI, to Paris and all points in between. They each have a compelling story about faith and fatherhood.

While some of the articles seemed to express the same ideas told in every so slightly different ways, there were many perspectives and thoughts that only 1 story expressed. Many stories were of men who had no meaningful relationship with their fathers growing up, and there were stories from men without children, homosexual men, single fathers, stay at home fathers, and more. The one common thread truly was Christianity, in a broad way. Many different perspectives, values, and practical applications of Christianity were described, however the “core” beliefs remained consistent throughout every man’s story. I found the stories in the last third to be particularly moving/memorable, and appreciated the diversity of stories/men/situations.

Would recommend to someone looking for a devotional sort of book regarding fatherhood and Christian faith, as the stories are all very short, quick reads and can be read over a long period of time without losing any of its relevance or you having to worry about remembering characters or plot lines.

I really enjoyed hearing the perspectives and experiences of so many diverse people (though it could have used a better copy editor).
