Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities

Rate this book
In Genderqueer, Dave Naz explores the gender spectrum in an entirely new way — by turning his camera on subjects that are genderqueer, transgender, intersex, pangender, and every shade in between. Helping to add to the current global discussion on the structured nature of gender identity, Genderqueer is an eye-opening musing on all of the people who don't fit neatly into a convenient box.

There are no words for how happy I am that I read this book. The pictures are beautiful, but what really made this a five-star book were the essays in the midst of it all. There's a lot to say about the genderqueer experience and, while this is only a small portion of that world, it's amazing to see pictures of people and read their words on a nebulous state of being that I've always had trouble expressing.

A great collection of photographs of genderqueer and trans individuals. I wish that the names and pronouns of each person photographed had been presented with their photos, but the short essays were more affecting than I expected and included such gems as

"By now it seems self-evident that the lived kinesthetic experience of gender is a spectrum, or perhaps more like a fabulous five-year-old's finger painting done by a grown-up corporeal human that farts and fucks and colors its way all red and orange on a sheet of neatly entrusted gender lore." -Jenny Factor

and

"For me, playing with gender is about defamiliarization." -Sarah Bergauser

It's funny to be reading this in 2019, days after Merriam-Webster announced that the personal pronoun "they" was the word of the year. Feels like we're moving in the right direction, at least in this.

Gorgeous photo book with some personal essays. I would have liked to read a few more since I’m more attuned to words than pictures and it’s how I learn, but that aside, this is a book your local queer resource center or library or bookstore or other progressive space should definitely have. Highly recommended!
