First I want to say, I used to be a huge Brenda Jackson fan to the point where I bought all her books in my early twenties and enjoyed them all at that time, but I did not enjoy this book at all and realized that her books are no longer for me. I almost didn’t finish this book several times, but I was determined to finish and just starting skimming through as quickly as possible because quite frankly, this book was boring and definitely did not give what I consider spicy black romance as the “romance” was pretty vanilla. I could feel the passion between this couple and I did not like that they were both so self deprecating with their thoughts. Alli was convinced Mark couldn’t want her after he ended their first kiss because of her lack of experience and just seemed to all around lack confidence. Mark, on the other hand, was determined to fight his feelings and attraction to Alli based on feeling like he was incapable of loving someone because he couldn’t save his wife from being murdered even though he was no where around her and because his father never showed him any love. Mark lacked emotional intelligence and it was very frustrating with his thought process, but all of a sudden, once Alli tells him she’s quitting and moving away because he can’t give her the love she wants, he has an epiphany that he does in fact love her and wants to marry her and have babies with her and raise his niece as their own, all within a matter of minutes. Be for real. There’s no way this man came this conclusion so quickly after having the emotional intelligence of a toddler or a teenager. And I don’t even want to touch on his thought process with raising his niece after her parents were killed.
I had high hopes that this book would be good after reading the synopsis and a sample of the book, but it was not and I’m disappointed as a reader who once bought all of this author’s books upon release. With that being said, this book may be for someone else that prefers the vanilla in a “romance” and not that extra spice that can come from other authors, so I will say if you decide to read this book, go into it with an open mind and understand that if you’re likely older than a “millennial” age, you might not like this book either and think it was boring as I did. Outside of the lack of emotional intelligence and the self deprecating of the main characters, I think this could have been a better book, but it also felt rushed at times to get to the end. I also think this book may be better suited for someone that doesn’t like books with a lot of sex, slang, or even explicit language and prefers a nice Harlequin type romance that is very vanilla. All in all, I would rate this story a 2.75/5 stars.
It was a good story, not great but ok. It is one of Brenda Jackson’s less exciting stories but it wasn’t hard to get through. Both the characters were not very memorable but they had a sweet story. I understand Mark’s trauma but he should have gotten help instead of dragging Allie into it until he figured. himself out. Allie had her own issues to deal with but she was more willing to try.
My best writer in the world. Just love all of books. They seem so realistic, so easy to read and get into. Anything she writes is foe me. The love is so geniune, so personab!e, so human like. The plot is spicy, touching and real.
This was a lovely story. Alli and Mark were so different. Yet, she was able to show he and prove to him he was worthy. You can only deny love for so long before it steals your heart. I absolutely loved this story. Bravo.
