Leam Holt's eighteenth birthday tomorrow caps the most depressing year of his life, marking the anniversary of his failed delightenment—the soul-darkening, magic-bestowing rite of passage that should’ve launched him into the fight between Darkness and Light. Making things worse,Leam’s insufferable brother, Zach, the pride of the family, is set to delighten in a few short hours.

When Gideon, the evil leader of Darkness, arrives to preside over Zach’s ceremony, the course of Leam’s life takes a drastic turn. Rather than fading farther into the background, Leam is ordered to undergo a series of brutal trials. Vast magical power is suddenly within Leam’s grasp if he triumphs, but Leam can’t seem to stay away from a beautiful girl of Light, and his testing is yielding disturbing results.

As Leam begins to uncover secrets on both sides of the war, he realizes the fate of humanity is at stake, and he may have the most to lose in the fight.

The Undelightened has a good plot, but in my opinion, it gets buried under lengthy metaphors and a slow pace. I would find myself being pulled out of the story by the prose used and then not being able to get back in to it. When I did manage to stay absorbed in the story, I got bored. There didn't seem to be much happening other than the same arguments or confusions for the first 300 pages. The last 1/4 of the book did pick up the pace, but by then I really wasn't interested to see how everything turned out. There wasn't enough connection in story to make me want to see what happened to the characters. I am sure there are several people out there that will fall in love with these characters and the story line but unfortunately it missed the mark with me.

Having never encountered a story like this before, I was really not sure what to expect from The Undelightened. But I am glad to say that I enjoyed this book as a whole, and I will tell you why. Although I was not entirely sure about this book while reading the first few chapters because I did not entirely understand what was happening, and because I had to become accustomed to this world which I had been dropped into.

When reading this book, it is important not to let this discourage you. Once the world and magic system begins to make more sense, the story also begins to pick up and becomes quite gripping.

Bentz Deyo took the commonly used trope of the conflict between light an dark, and put an original spin on it. I cannot put it into words, but I found the blend of genres in this book to be quite unique and interesting. I also found the story overall to be quite unpredictable and very imaginative, as well as effectively-described. Even some of the most fantastical scenes were easy for me to imagine (despite the lack of reality within them) because of the vivid manner in which Deyo described them.

A lot of attention was also given to padding-out the scenes within this book by providing many details. I do normally like my books to be detailed, but found that I would become a little frustrated with the amount of detail, or length, to certain scenes as I was very curious as to where the plot was going, and I waned things to move forward more quickly. This personal opinion is also a compliment in itself, because I am saying that I found the plot to be interesting to the point where I wanted to rush to the end in order to see how it would all wrap up.

The second book, The Unleashed, comes out on January 13th 2017, and I am very excited to see where the story takes these characters to next. Judging from how The Undelightened ended, as well as judging from the title of the second book, I expect the story to become quite epic!

I disagree with other reviews I have read. I did not have a problem with the pace of the book. I found it well written for a first in a series. Some first books need to give a great deal of background and character information. It was well done to me. I would like to see a drawing of what Gideon would look like though. Just to get it in my head. Would also like to see background on some of the other characters. Ps I hope Sarah gets her due.

Note: I won this through FirstReads from Goodreads.

Towards the beginning I wasn't sure about this one, took a while before I actually liked it. However once I really got into it, I started to love it.

I don't have a problem with the pacing, like some do, I sort of understand their complaint, but I enjoyed the way it was written.

Head baddie I didn't like, but I think that's half the point...

Overall I enjoyed the hell out of this one, and I sure hope there's more to come!

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be: milquetoast.

The characters are one-dimensional. The dialogue is sophomoric. There's an element of creepy, pervasive blandness throughout the entire book that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

And it doesn't have an ending. It just stops literally in the middle of the street, "to be continued" at an abrupt part of the story. The only reason I kept reading this lame book was to see if the ending paid off, so I'm feeling pretty robbed knowing that I'd have to buy a second book to get closure. I don't think I'm going to.

Ok, redeeming qualities. It does have a coherent plot that progresses at a good pace. Despite my constant eye-rolling I was able to get through the book in no time. The writing style is clear most of the time, easy to follow. The concept of delightenment is one I've never heard of, so it's got uniqueness going for it on a conceptual level.

And dassit.

I'll add details to this review soon to back up exactly why I think this book was such a flop.

~~Edit 1: The end of Book 1 has the first few chapters of Book 2 in it. Our main character suddenly has amnesia when it’s totally not necessary. Ew.

I liked The Undelightened. I thought the characters were enjoyable, the writing good and the storyline interesting. Great start to this series.

Looking forward to The Unleashed!

This review might be long because I'm going to have to talk about a ton of stuff here. Sweet freaking lord. I had the hardest time trying to figure out a rating for this book. The whole time I was reading it, I was thinking a solid 3 stars because it's well-written and I didn't want to put it down. The problem was that I felt so lukewarm towards all the characters - Leam mainly- that even great writing couldn't bump up the star power there. But now thinking about it after finishing, I feel like I can't give it less than 4 stars. Here's why:

1. VOICE. The voice in the novel is fantastic. There's sooo much writing skill here that it's impressive. There are a lot of characters and each is immediately recognizable. The descriptions were a bit much for some readers, but when I found myself tearing up, grimacing, and gagging reading a book, I knew I'd read some exceptional writing. I freaking hated the bad guys, really liked the good guys, and felt what emotions I was supposed to be feeling at the right times.

2. RISK. As a writer, I have to give high marks for bravery here. This guy did something that's hard to do and he did it well: he took us on the dark side first, telling Leam's POV and letting us see him as a person despite being "Dark". It's not typical formula for reading, so it was risky. I admire that! That said, it did make me want to stop reading early on. Seeing Leam as a quasi-bad guy who's kind of morally ambiguous for the entirety of the novel was hard to take as a reader. I personally don't like following an immature bad-leaning character, but I'm glad I pushed past that. I can see why a lot of readers DNF, though.

3. UNIQUE. The main reason I trudged on through the chapters with Leam's family (UGH...) and Gideon in general (yuck) was because everything was unique. The storyline was "chosen one", yes, but it was uniquely done and all the magical elements were pretty cool. I loved the terms, the spells, everything. In movie terms, reading this novel felt like watching Preacher mixed with 300 (weird, I know), so all the crazy characters (like the ax dude in the cemetery and Gideon) were almost cartoonish and yet scary all the same.

4.

All said, I'm interested in the second novel, but I really need more of the Light characters shown and Leam realllllly needs to mature at a rapid pace to keep me interested. I don't know if I could continue this series if Leam doesn't make some strides in maturity and choose a side ASAP. The yelling between characters got old quickly. I need to see more emotion from everyone that isn't balls to the wall psycho or wordless sniveling. For that reason, Sebastian was probably my favorite character because dude is CHILL FOR DAYS.

Not going to lie, was very tempted to put this one down but a tiny sliver of curiosity kept me going. Glad I did, though annoyed it turned out to be part of a series, nothing indicated that when I bought it. Or added it to goodreads. Or started to read it. My one clue was that at 94% too much needed to go on before the end, as well as the end of course. Which just happened to be right bang in the middle of the most interesting part, dammat.

Some of the descriptions were deliberately vile, I will warn you, while describing areas pertaining to the Darkness as well as its members, without corresponding descriptions of the Light. But then isn’t always Light’s problem? It’s easier to attack anyone than protect everyone.

This book would have scored higher Voodoos had the book captured me more in the first half, it could have done with something to suck you in, as it was it was past 55% before things really picked up and got going. Hopefully the pace of book 2 will keep going from where 1 finished off and just keep snowballing. And I really hope that it doesn’t all get dragged out which a popular stunt these days.

Looking forward to book 2 and the conclusion of Leams adventures. Go get that girl, boy.

The Undelightened is Volume 1 from the young adult paranormal series by Bentz Deyo. After failing the magical delightened test given to prospective followers of evil, Leam Holt is given a second chance by Gideon, the pernicious leader of Darkness. Gideon has devised a dangerous weapon to control the Unknowing (humans) and suspects Leam has special powers that will be useful.

When Jace, a member of Light, disappears, his daughter, Eloa, attempts to find him and becomes acquainted with Leam. Both hide their true identities from each other, but are unaware of others watching them. Leam, despised by his family, eventually grasps how important his presence and newly acquired skills are, which can assist in the war between Darkness and Light. He now faces a difficult dilemma.

Mesmerizing is the word I thought of while reading Bentz Deyo’s awesome paranormal tale, The Undelightened. It had a very good beginning so I kept turning pages as I found myself immersed in the story. There is so much entertaining drama and great dialogue from carefully developed characters, some of whom were very original and imposing. The writing was so descriptive, and there were several repulsive scenes that made me feel relieved that I was not eating at the time.

The Undelightened, Volume 1, is a remarkable story by Bentz Deyo. The outcome of the war between Darkness and Light continues in his other paranormal books in the series. Both young adults and older readers will enjoy this author’s novels.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

OK, so I was torned between giving it 3 or 4 stars (I really wished the option 3.5 was available), but I ended up giving it 3 stars because though it was an amazing story-line and it was full of surprising moments and big twists, most of the time I found myself getting bored due to the slow-going pace it had. The writing style didn't fully get my attention, I can't identify why, but that and the fact that I wanted more action or something, was the main issue of my lack of enthusiasm for this book.

Don't get me wrong: I did like the story a lot! It was genious and thrilling! It kind of remembered me of some books like Beautiful Creatures, Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Percy Jackson; but it was totally different from them too. I loved the fact that the story followed a bad boy and his darkness background, it totally gave me the chills sometimes and I was amazed by it!

I'm really glad I had the chance to read this, and I will keep an eye on these series, that ending was a great cliff-hanger and left me wanting to know the development of the story!

When I first got this book, I thought, What is Undelightened? The title intrigued me from the beginning.

The story reminded me of some of the Bible stories I learned as a child: two brothers competing to be the best (Jacob & Esau, Cain & Abel, Joseph & his brothers).

Leam did not received his "dark gift" on his 18th birthday & now it's time for his brother, Zach, to go through the same ceremony. Mr. Deyo's descriptions of Leam's feelings are well done & I could feel his pain & disappointment at not receiving the gift & therefore becoming an outcast.

The descriptions of Sara (the bitch!) & Gideon (what a Creep!) were great & I could imagine them in my mind. A book that has a villain or villains that you love to hate is always a plus.

This was a unique take on the age-old battle between darkness & light. I look forward to the rest of the series (and hope that the villains get what is coming to them!).

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The descriptions of the characters and their surroundings, the intensity of Leam, and the horror that is Gideon made this a joy to read.

I was particularly taken with Porlo (for my sins?) and look forward to his character development in further books. I'd like to find out more about him and his role in the Light/Dark world. I'd also like to find out a bit more about the Light and Eloa; I do feel that I don't know her as well as I know Leam.

For a first novel it is intense and well-written and I believe that most of the characters are easy to relate to, both Light and Dark. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series, mostly because I'm trying to second-guess what's going to happen next (a sign of how much pleasure I got from reading it) and I'd like to know how wrong I am.

Totally captivating! This is a book that kept me engrossed within it's pages from beginning to end and once I reached the end had me disappointed that I did not have my hands on the next book to continue on.

This book is intense! You are hooked in right from the onslaught! To some of you it may appear like another story about dark versus light, good versus evil. Well, this is not "JUST" another story! There is no predictability here! This book will keep you guessing from one chapter to the next. I still am unsure where the main character is going to find himself. A novel that can do that is on the top of my list and wanting more! I don't think there is a word out there that can best describe how eager I am to continue on with this story line.

Bentz Deyo's writing had my imagination revved up and working overtime! Incredibly brilliant!

WOW! This is a fast pace, action pact fantasy. I was given this book by the author for a fair review. Thankfully I loved this book and can't wait to read more. The characters have so many layers and are unpredictable. It is difficult to believe that this is his first book. Though it is not a stand alone book, it is worth reading. Your not left hanging, more like waiting. I am enjoying the inner growth of Leam. I hope that Jace is able to become a father figure to Leam. He needs someone positive to look up to who can help him. I am disappointed in Eloa, her character is not that of a strong being of light. I hope that in the next book she grows into a strong person worthy of Leam.

I enjoyed this book soooo much! When I read the synopsis for this book I was a little skeptic at first but it did not disappoint. War between light & dark, magic, secrets, family problems, even a little romance...need I say more?? Bentz Deyo took the age old battle between light & dark & gave it his own unique touch with amazing & interesting characters that I cannot get enough of. When does book two come out?? I need to know more about Leam & Eloa!!

Thank you Bentz Deyo for creating such a wonderful story & sharing it with us readers!!

I liked it. It's labeled as Young Adult. I would recommend later teens, rather than young teens. It's a little bloody and murdery for younger readers, in my opinion. I wouldn't let my 14 year old read it quite yet.

I thought it was a little too black and white in the good vs. evil area. I like my books like this a little grayer. At the beginning, I was worried it wouldn't be very good because of this, but by the end, I was sucked in. I wouldn't say the book was great, but I definitely want to know what comes next. Hopefully, the author is hard at work on the sequel.

I should add, I got this book from GoodRead giveaways, from the author.

Intense Journey into the Magical Realm
I have not seen writing this amazing in quite some time. The imagery was so detailed I felt like I was in the story and the very rich character development was done in such a way that made me feel like I knew them. It was very easy to picture every scene and character. I found myself torn between wanting Leam to join forces with darkness and wanting him to stay with Eloa and join the Light. I didn't want this book to end. So many parts made me gasp and the end made me feel like I needed to read the next book immediately. I can hardly wait for book 2 Unleashed!

I enjoyed the book. I gave it three stars because I would find my mind wandering during the less intense and action-less parts of the book, there wasn't anything that would keep me focused on the book. I would, however, recommend the book to other readers looking for a new book to read. Deyo did a wonderful job describing the things in the book. I found that the descriptions for Gideon and the people of darkness actually had me repulsed, they are gross. I look forward the the coming books.

Won this book through a goodreads giveaway! I thought the book was based on a very interesting and unique idea. It really wasn't anything like the books I typically read. The only issue I had was with some of the dialog. Particularly the conversation between the younger characters. I didn't find their conversations very convincing because I didn't feel like they spoke the way teenagers would speak to each other. Otherwise, this was a very good story.

This book was pretty good, I loved the light vs dark I haven't read one of them and now I plan on reading more! The story was a good mix of action and some romance. The only thing that I didn't like (hence why I gave it 4 stars) is because the book for me was a little bit slow in the beginning, I would've liked it to go a little bit faster in pace, but all in all the author wrote a great piece I'll be looking out for book number two!

An enjoyable read!

A failure, a disappointment, a stain...
Leam's failure to delighten leads him to being the odd one out.

Such an enjoyable read! A good, interesting story!

This is a unique story and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Full of Darkness and Light, betrayal, secrets, prophecy, evil versus good and a hint of romance.

Perfect for readers of paranormal urban fantasy.

I enjoyed reading this book. It started out fairly well, and while it did read adequately for me, I did notice a slight pacing issue and a lack of character background as the novel progressed. I enjoyed the telling of this story; it mainly focusing on the age old battle between light & dark, and low key romantic vibes that can be found throughout the novel. It's an ideal read for fans of fantasy with a bit of adventure.

I received this book from the giveaway. It had a good plot and I had no problem with the pace. One thing I would change about this is the cliche-ness of the book. At certain events I thought "Of course that happened". But every book has its predictable moments. If you're interested in a classic romance and betrayal theme with enemies caught up in a war, this is a great book.

Well written with amazing characters. Each of them was unique. It's a first in a series so I understand the slow pace, but still, I like it. I could relate to so many situations just by reading the blurb, and even more reading the book, but... spoilers!
