In the town of Tall Oak, high school football reigns supreme. Led by star Quarterback Justin Jackson, the players walk the halls of their school like gods, but a sinister side lies behind their "Golden Boy" facade. Despite their best efforts, their atrocities will come to life.
Every year, the star players take a retreat to an isolated cabin in the woods for a week of debauchery. This drug-fueled party is intended to be their final send-off before college.
This time, it will be different.
This time, they've pushed their victims too far.
Trapped in an isolated cabin, they will finally know what it means to be the victim.
I really didn’t care for the way this was structured. None of the chapters are labeled or differentiated, and every chapter either jumped past to present or from character to character. And then suddenly the last portion of the book is just a continuous timeline. So this really made it very hard for me to follow everything, especially when it was literally every single chapter shifting. And it became very repetitive, which reduced my overall interest by the halfway point. The story itself was extremely predictable and seemed sort of unnecessary. Not the plot, but the way things played out. All of the theatrical elements, ie masks and the revenge plan, just felt very forced and not organic at all. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I feel like if the victimized girls were far more involved, as opposed to their fathers, it may have made this entire experience much deeper and meaningful. It would have added some tremendous depth to the plot, revolving not only around revenge, but also empowerment. But what we got was just all the men being pushed into the forefront of everything, resulting in a bit of a nonsensical bloodbath, while the daughters who were bullied, assaulted, raped, etc were basically left out. Just a huge missed opportunity and an odd creative direction. Don’t get me wrong, the plot wasn’t bad at all and I really liked the quality of Timothy King’s writing, but all of the potential here was never quite realized. This just needed a ton of further developmental editing to bring it all full circle.
SEVEN RABBITS [2024] By Timothy King My Review 5.0 Stars
This horror novel was a book recommendation from a Goodreads friend of mine. It made quite an impression on her, so I purchased it and shoved it straight to the front of the line to read. The cover art (deep orange and red featuring two life size rabbits with a cabin in the backdrop) impresses me as ominous and not at all amusing. It was released March 31st this year, and Amazon marketed it with genre designations horror fiction and horror suspense. I saw it featured on Dark Reads Reviews sporting a superlative five-stars in late April, with the associated TikTok review carrying hashtags of Extreme Horror and Splatterpunk.
It is a first book by author Timothy King. “Seven Rabbits” is a lot of things, but reading like a debut novel is not one of them. It is easily a five-star read and if you were unaware of the identity of the author you would just naturally assume it was penned by a seasoned veteran. This inaugural voyage in the crowded field of horror by newcomer Timothy King is gradually garnering attention by word of mouth. The impressive quality of his writing is such that I would not hesitate to buy his next book sight unseen. That is of course with the caveat that Timothy King continues with the genre that brought him to the dance which is Extreme Horror.
I was truly “wowed” by this fellow’s aptitude for writing characters with such depth, his perfect pacing of the action, and his wizardry for divvying out snippets of the backstory and then seamlessly stepping back into the heart of the terror occurring with the trapped teenagers. I noted that readers have already decided what a sensational movie this novel would make. A film adaptation could be spectacular in the right hands, and King’s narrative simply screams “screenplay”.
So, alright I have digressed enough already. “Seven Rabbits” in a few words or less is a “revenge slasher” tale but perhaps not so pure and definitely not so simple. The author snatched the basis for the plot from today’s headlines. The time frame is the ‘90’s, and the place is the fictional town of Tall Oak, USA. The football team is a glorified group of high school athletes, six of the starters now graduating Seniors and bound for prestigious college educations in the near future. One of the boys is a big muscular, very talented Junior, who will be back in school for his Senior Year, and not college-bound like his teammates.
The popularity of the football team in the halls of the high school is legendary and the boys rule their minions like they are reigning deities. The boys were gifted by God with good looks and athleticism, but their respective fathers are the purveyors of wealth, power, and privilege. Chase, the Junior among the graduating six members of the football team, is not cut from the same cloth. He is a handsome likeable jock with a fully functional moral compass and has been happy and content with his family and home.
All of us readers know about high school, and the huge part that sports play in the scheme of things. The author drafts a picture not so far-fetched at all, with the football team having fathers in important places, such as the mayorship and the police department. Political clout and power of position is augmented by the affluence proffered by the families of the boys. The six seniors have wanted for virtually nothing, and yet have ruthlessly taken anything they wanted from their classmates with no consideration of right or wrong. Male students were bullied, but the female population of the school was their pool of prey.
It demonstrated the author’s grasp and imagination to take a known abominable state of affairs in high school arenas everywhere, and certainly not limited to the ‘90s, then bring it to the reader fully realized and the sins in stark relief. I felt like I could recognize the boys by sight and knew their respective personalities such was the author’s depth of characterization.
The other, mostly not talked about, aspects of high school for girls, especially the attractive ones and the girls who are different enough to be bullied and harassed by others, is the date-rapes and extent of grief that is dealt out with impunity by the privileged male students. In this “taken from real life” tale, the fathers attempt to rectify and stop abuses of their daughters by members of the football team. These are acts of futility and even humility.
In this novel of extreme horror, we are treated to what happens when the ignored and maligned fathers of victimized daughters decide to band together and carry out vigilante justice. In this instance it does not constitute detention in the study hall or the boys having their knuckles rapped by a ruler. It goes beyond the corporal punishment teachers meted out with a paddle in “the old days”. The book is cleverly written with the complete story meted out using chapters in present time, but alternating the escalating terror of the boys with flashbacks in time to when the bullying, rapes, and other atrocities were committed.
I was actually brought to tears at points in this novel, which is a rarity since my book diet consists of a huge portion of extreme horror. This novel is so well written that at times I felt like I was watching it play out on a screen. There are no “Trigger Warnings” in the Amazon blurb which is a brief description of what the book is about. That said, I was impressed that the Author (at the beginning of the book) was sensitive enough to list “Triggers” (I liked his inclusion of “…overall, rough shit”).
The violence and gore are explicit with a capital “E”. His ability to describe torture and other violent acts in excruciating detail was exemplary. I know that I did not issue a rating when I finished the book. It is a definite five stars. I knew that (as they say in the country) “When I drove up and hitched”, but the avengers were humanized to a significant degree and without including any “spoilers” I felt conflicted about the ending. Subsequent to thinking It over carefully, it is my opinion that the ending “wrote itself” when the avengers carried out their first act of attrition.
SOME “ROUGH SHIT” YOU’RE GONNA LOVE, A NEW TALENT TO WATCH FOR IN THE BOOK RELEASES
I loved the way this story was told, alternating chapters between present and past events. It gave us a chance to get to know and feel for the victims without being bogged down with massive info dumps or overly long and gratuitous assault scenes.
I'm usually really wary of horror books featuring sexual assault as a main premise because many of the more extreme ones I've read handled it VERY poorly, but it was easy to see the care and respect the author handled those scenes with. There are quite a few painful moments in this book that will break your heart and make you rage.
Overall, Seven Rabbits was beautifully written and I can't wait to read more from this author!
I wanted to like this and had high hopes, but this was a major letdown. The story is all over the place and the characters pretty much suck. The story got off to a really slow start, but I was hoping for at least a few cool moments here and there, but I felt like I waited and waited for something that never happened. By the end, this felt like a chore to finish and I'm now ready to read something more enjoyable. I applaud this for not being super long for no reason, but the only thing cool about this was the rabbit masks, so I give this a 2/5.
It’s easy for a new release by a debut author to get overlooked. Well, there’s a reason Seven Rabbits by Timothy King is holding its own and keeps popping up in your feed. It’s a brutal revenge story about a group of misogynist football jocks getting a taste of what they deserve.
This one is not for the faint of heart as the detailed descriptions of vengeance are enough to make an ER doctor queasy but I fully expect Seven Rabbits to be a contender for next year’s Books of Horror brawl, so pick it up now and stay ahead of the game.
"I don't think killing them is enough...we have to make them suffer."
4.8 🐰⛏️🪓🩸
"He noticed most of the masked men were lining up now. He couldn’t seem to grasp the reality of it all. How could these men be so cold? How could they be so eager? Their blood-stained jumpsuits and the smears of bodily fluids on their previously white rabbit masks offered no answers."
"These men knew them, and obviously, each had their own vendetta against the boys. He tried to piece together who the other men were, but it turned out he didn’t need to."
⚠️ Violence against women Sexual assault Extreme acts of violence Suicide Torture And overall, rough shit
This book had non-stop action and horror exactly what I love and it was fast-paced from start to finish. It delivered a great revenge story that hit all the emotions. I really liked how the author balanced the current horrors the teenagers were facing with the backstory, switching between the two so seamlessly.
The story takes place in the small town of Tall Oak, where the high school football team, led by star quarterback Justin Jackson, walks around like they’re untouchable thanks to their status and their families’ influence. They believe they’re above the law but behind their “Golden Boy” image lurks something much darker. Every year, a few of the star players take a week long trip to an isolated cabin as a send off before college. But this year… things are going to be very different.
4.75⭐️ Football is big in this town. The football boys are all loved and usually get their way....but sometimes things go a bit too far and eventually people have to pay for their crimes, one way or another. How far would you go to seek justice for your daughter?
This was explosive and action packed! A great revenge story that you're gunna want to pick up! The description of the kills, blood, and gore were executed well and you could really feel the emotions through the pages. Some parts were tough to read through considering they were highschool kids but the writing was excellent throughout the book!
Always check your triggers but I highly recommend picking this gem up! Also, these rabbits are no joke. They are not the cute rabbits we all know. They drip in blood 😈 Go pick this up!!
i feel bad that i initially thought this book was going to be super into the frat boys and the girls were just going to be victims used for plot points.
chase is a kid in high school going on a boys weekend with the rest of the football team. they’ve hurt and exploited so many girls at their school for the sake of tally marks and trophies and on their trip they bask in the photos and footage they’ve taken of their conquests. however, seven rabbits is a story of ~revenge and these assholes fucked around and soon find out.
there were A LOT of characters introduced very quickly, but the dynamics make it easier to remember who is who as you read.
this is an amazing read where the shit cunts get exactly what they deserve ♡ it’s gory, it’s violent, things happen to the people you think maybe might be okay - no one is okay lol. its a fun slasher even though some of the motives are a little unrealistic ♡ just have fun with it!
What a great revenge book. I like how every chapter was either the present or the past and told you the back story of what happened. I’m glad these lil jock boys got what they deserved, but poor chase man, he didn’t deserve it 😩

Home invasion books are one of my favorite horror tropes, so when I saw this ARC opportunity had closed, I begged to be let in, and I'm so grateful to the author for accepting my request!
As a high school teacher for 24 years, I've seen my share of favoritism when it comes to athletes, especially football players. Every school has rumors of wild parties, girls being taken advantage of, and incidents being swept under the rug because of the "you can't ruin his future" mentality.
Chase has moved with his father to the town of Tall Oak, Florida, and he is quickly accepted by the football team, the golden boys of the town. Their tradition is to spend a booze soaked, drug fueled weekend in an isolated cabin in the woods. This will be their last hurrah before college, so they plan to make it memorable. It's going to be memorable, all right. Because finally, they're going to be held accountable for their actions.
I read this book in just a few hours and was glad to see that the author made each male character his own person and also avoided relying on stereotypes. It would be too easy to lump all of these boys together, but the author gave them all distinct personalities. The most chilling part of this book was the build-up before the attack. The descriptions were absolutely terrifying and created a tense, deeply unsettling atmosphere.
Many thanks to the author for this early copy and for my place on his ARC team. SEVEN RABBITS will publish March 31, 2024.
I wanted to try out a new author and saw good reviews for Seven Rabbits. After reading, I can say Timothy King made one hell of a first impression!
This is a slasher with purpose.
The kills aren’t meaningless and the story drives this entire book. I can’t say there are too many slashers out there that focus on character development, background, and meaning as much as Seven Rabbits. This is a story of revenge and the killers all have a clear motive. While the group of victims are mostly deserving of what’s coming to them, there are characters like our main protagonist Chase who are put into the mix without really being guilty of anything wrong. There’s just so many layers to this and the final product was so entertaining.
This should be a clear example of how to write a good slasher.
3.5 stars. The premise was great, I personally am over the splatterpunk genre, so I tend to skim through those gory parts, but over all I thought the concept was superb!
My synopsis- 7 girls who endure rape and bullying, some who succumb to death and 7 fathers of those daughters seeking vengeance.
My only issue is there wasn’t enough of a build up with these 7 boys that wanted to make me hate them to a point where I revelled in them being tortured. Yes, what they did was atrocious but it also was so brief that I sort of felt bad that they were being so brutally tortured. In fact, the fathers were the ones that came off as barbarians, so much so that I despised them by the end of the book. Overall it was a quick and straight to the point fun read, so all in all nice job!
Wow! This was one hell of a revenge story. A solid slasher read with plenty of gore. Seven Rabbits centers around high school football jocks who commit horrid acts upon their female classmates. These events turn fatal quick and the fathers of the community directly or closely related to these young girls gang up against these football players seeking vengeance.
Every slasher horror fan needs to read this one! Timothy King did a great job writing this story and I went through all the emotions with this one. Looking forward to seeing what he comes up next for us!
every year, the star players of the football team take a retreat to an isolated cabin to close out the summer. this year is supposed to be their final send off before college except this time things take a turn.
this time, they've pushed their victims too far.
I really should have loved this & I did try to. everyone who knows me knows I love a good revenge story, it's one of my favorite tropes however, this felt just ok to me.
the build up was bleh & the characters are all flat, one dimensional assholes. I also didn't like the way it was structured. I wanted to get more out of the victims povs. they just felt soooo, empty & rushed? it was like the author was like "hmm maybe I should add some context of what happened" but couldn't actually be bothered to write a detailed story when it came to the victims.
there's tons of gore & bloody goodness but not enough to save the overall story for me.
Let’s be clear – This is Timothy King’s debut novel, Seven Rabbits. I will happily lap up anything King produces. He has gained a new fan in me and produced probably my favourite slasher story to date.
Seven Rabbits is enjoying critical acclaim and let me tell you, that it is wholly deserved. The promise behind the synopsis is delivered, blood brother style! It doesn’t matter where you’re reading this from – be it from the US or the UK or any of the countries in between, we’ve all met arseholes like the football team in Seven Rabbits. They bully people just for their own amusement, they use and abuse girls and so often they are protected simply because they are guys and have “promising careers.” I say fuck that. They deserve what’s coming to them. But the real talent in the author is knowing that and yet still feeling sorry for what is happening to them. Timothy King does that in spades.
King has crafted a multi layered experience. Florida. Now I have never been (always wanted to, but my pale ass self would disintegrate into ash if stood under the Floridian sun.) The descriptions, the sights, the sounds, it all made me feel like I was there. That I was witnessing all the wrong doings and screaming no at the top of my lungs, trying to alter the trajectory of the story. I couldn’t and shouldn’t. Timothy King has his readers in good hands.
The entire novel feels like a drop into the darkness. Your senses are heightened, your nerves tingle, tears escape the corners of your eyes. You just feel everything.
Everyone that knows me, knows I love a good revenge story. This is a story of stupid kids doing terrible things thinking they will forever get away with the stuff they’ve done. But that might not be true.
This story is heavy on bringing the fact that having parents in powerful places can and will help you get out of things. But what if the parents of the victims got tired of the spoiled kids getting away with crimes?
How far as a parent would you go to ensure that your children are avenged? Because me personally I’m going to the ends of the earth and pulling a rabbit on them 🫡
This was an amazing read. I could not put it down. Timothy manages to balance the light and darkness of vengeance. These seven rabbits have every reason to hate their prey. The pov switches a few times but it is so masterful in execution I was just eager to turn to the next page. I could not put it down. I became invested in the story and it's characters. The emotions Timothy manages to convey are rare in a horror volume. I want to read anything he writes in the future.
Whenever I see a book continually get nothing but five star reviews, I find myself weary about the ratings. However, after reading this. I get it now. I get why this book is receiving the praise it is. It really is that good.
Home invasion. The Strangers movie vibes. Written very well. Creepy as hell. Fantastic horror that I would recommend to basically everyone. Preorder is available now && Happy Easter because it’s releasing 3/31.
Seven Rabbit’s was Timothy King’s debut novel and a heck of a ride! This book was a masterpiece of gory vengeance and revenge wrapped up with chains and barbwire. The POV switches several times keeping the reader on their toes and sitting on the edge of their seats. This book goes from OMG 😳 to What The Fuck!!! Get ready for this PHENOMENAL read!!!
I can’t wait to meet this amazing author at Books & Brew 2.0! This book is also apart of Books of Horror Indy Brawl!
A high school football team parties at a secluded cabin while masked figures close in around them. Their intertwined stories and transgressions result in a graphic and violent night where the teammates must fight to survive.
This slasher tale was full of bloody vengeance against the horrible jocks. Do they deserve the torment they are about to receive? I felt that the root of the issue, aka the parents who are politically powerful wasn’t really addressed. Would these teens have done the things they did if their fathers hadn’t made them into untouchable gods in town (like they themselves used to be)… it definitely makes you wonder (Nature vs Nurture).
Regardless, this is definitely a chilling and gruesome, well written debut story from an up and coming author. There are so many complexities and layers that Timothy created, as well as an engaging plot and fascinating array of characters. This a compelling read for fans of horror, mysteries, thrillers, and everything in between.
*Deep breath* WHERE DO I EVEN START? 😱 This book was SO damn good! I finished it in just a few hours because I was addicted. Timothy King’s writing was riveting as every word pulled me in more and more. I felt all sorts of emotions reading this 😅 an incredible debut! One of my favorites this year! Still thinking about it, I’ll definitely never forget this one. A revenge story worth a read! Keeps your heart racing for sure lol.
This book is best described as a classic case scenario when boys will be boys. I am sure we have heard all of that before. Boys get into mischief right; a little mischief such as bullying, grape, murder and etc the list goes on. The football players prey on the girls in their high school which leaves them scared, hurt and being unprotected. What happens when their fathers go to their local law enforcement to have justice done. But the law enforcement turns a blind eye. Oh did I mention some of the football players are parents of the law enforcement and even the mayor?
What does one do when the legal system doesn’t help? When you’re turned away because clearly your daughter lied? This story follow seven fathers as they explore this route.
Tall Oak is a small town where football reigns supreme and nothing gets in the way of that. When is it enough? you have to take matters into your own hands. The writing style is storytelling at its finest and I read this book rather quickly. I love how the author flipped between past and present amazing! You felt the emotions in this book from hurt, pain, heartbreak, disappointment and hatred.
This is most definitely is an entertaining read. Please check your triggers. If you like explicit graphic content, graphic scenes, horror, and enough gory scenes that’ll last you a life time I would highly recommend this book. Everyone should take a look at this author definitely up and coming.
Seven Rabbits is a fantastic debut!! Whether it's been in real life, movies, or novels, we have all encountered the "golden boys," the ones somehow above the law, and always beyond persecution. In small town America, this happens all too often. How refreshing it is to read a novel where they get their due!
In the town of Tall Oak, the football team might as well be gods. They get what they want, who they want, and how they want them without repercussions until now. Each year, the star players go to a secluded cabin where they engage in drug and alcohol infused debauchery, this year, they may not leave.
Things got really out of hand in town. Some members of the team have done unspeakable things, and they preyed on the wrong victims. It doesn't take long until the things done in darkness see the light, and when they do, the Predators will become the prey.
I am a sucker for a good revenge story, and this was exactly that. This book gave off both home invasion and slasher vibes. There was a decent amount of gore, but it wasn't too much and not overly gratuitous. I personally loved every second of it. I did listen to the book, and I thought the narrator had a pleasant voice and did a fantastic job.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
