Broken Ashes #1

Muted Voices

Rate this book
I can constantly hear them, the voices. It doesn’t matter if I’m in a crowded room or the middle of a desert, I hear them, indistinct voices. I can never really work out what they’re saying, and I’ve long given up trying.

Everything changes when my life is threatened again, and the voices quiet, one strong voice telling me to run, so of course, I listen.

When some supernatural agents turn up in town, I should be cautious, but thanks to my instincts, which have always guided me right before, I’m not worried about them at all, at least, I’m not until they start to notice things about me, differences that no human should have.

Thankfully, a call from my more bloody job saves me from having to stick around. The betrayal that quickly follows doesn’t surprise me, it does leave me only one place to go, and I have no idea how he’s going to react or if I’ll even make it there alive.

It’s a good job that I never turn down a challenge because this may be one that I don’t survive.

This is a medium burn paranormal Reverse Harem.

I finished, and frankly it's a goddamn miracle.

Imagine you go out to a restaurant that's received rave reviews about its tasty food. You order, your meal arrives... but here's the thing - you're not allowed to feed yourself. Your server stands by with a slingshot; food will be launched at your face in an attempt to make it into your mouth. The server is a really bad shot and hits nearly everywhere but your mouth. When they do actually make it into your mouth, it's at such a high velocity that you choke. What you do taste seems to taste good so you allow it to go on, desperately hoping that the experience either gets better or you stop caring. By the end of the meal, you're not only frustrated, confused, and pissed off, but you're still flippin hungry.

Congratulations, you now understand my experience with this book.

Normally, I'd make some comment about needing an editor or the book being a first draft - you get the idea. However, as I woosah away the oozing residue of this offensive assault of words, I'm just going to blatantly assert that this author needs to take a writing class or hire a ghost writer. There is no editing this book.

The author's complete and utter lack of understanding of sentence structure let alone how to structure A BOOK, is so glaring and intrusive that I'm still, days later, experiencing second-hand embarrassment as I peer at the five star reviews. Do they have a lot of friends and family or something?

On top of the POV changes happening haphazardly outside of Chapter shifts, the author has no clue how a Chapter even works, literally dropping them into the dead center of scenes with no rhyme or reason. They could be talking about the weather and BOOM, new Chapter right in the middle of the convo, picking right up on the other side and then suddenly changing POV's a few pages later. FREAKING WHY??

Then there's the repetition, the repetition, and the repetition - in case the reader has a three second memory and needs to be reminded ad nauseam. For instance, all the men are super duper uber powerful, so much so that they have to hide it so that no one outside their group is aware. The reader is told this in every way, shape, form, and method possible. Repeatedly. Just like we're waterboarded with the fact that Neith is super uber mysteriously and awe-inspiringly powerful as well.

In fact, Neith does something that is -shocking- or -surprising- basically every few pages. The author must not have access to a thesaurus because those are almost the only descriptors we get. I did a search and came across 42 surprises and 46 shocks in a book that is only 272 pages. FFS talk about beating a trope beyond death and into dismemberment. And badly, at that.

Speaking of a thesaurus, I'm not against swearing but there are literally 345 instances of the word fuck (in all its variations). Once again - 272 pages of story.

Honestly, there are so many many things wrong with this, but the most egregious part... the part that had me verging on rage quitting almost from the very beginning... is the unedited streams of word vomit that reads like some sugared up toddler's frantic, hiccuped ramblings. Amongst my highlights is:

He’s standing near the body but not as close as the others, and everyone is avoiding him and giving him truly terrified looks, I can tell that although he looks stoic and like he’s unaware of the fearful looks and the way that everyone is avoiding him, that’s not the case and he is in fact very aware, and it’s affecting him more than he’d like anyone to know.

The true misfortune is that the underlying concept is interesting. The execution, however, is truly abominable.

No way this character is 30 years old, she's got the maturity of a 15 year old.
The writing is just sub par to what I want to read, and the amount of fucks in the 16% of this book I read is just ridiculous. Like, use a thesaurus if you can't think of a word, don't just insert swear words.
Dumb book.

Who edited this book? It’s unreadable. It needs periods to break up the stream of consciousness writing style. My brain hurts now.

Here’s an example:

Their badges are legitimate as well, and if I have to, I have a couple of tricks up my sleeves that I can pull out so if it turns out that they have something unsavory in mind and my instincts are wrong for the first time in my life then I should be okay, and I might get a good work out in fighting them off, it is also always amusing when I fight supernaturals, and they realise I’m not as easy to take down as the average human, I train and work out hard.

How is that one sentence? DNF 10%.

Well, this has way higher ratings than I think it should have. I mean there is some originality to the story, which is actually what the author is great at (in her other books as well). The execution though is unfortunately far from great. The writing isn't awful, but compared to the number of books she has released and the popularity, it is rather disappointing. There are way too many grammatical errors, unimportant information and repetitions, like the the words "front door" being used 20 times, and every single action being described in detail. The fmc had her moments, but the fact that the guys keep being surprised and repeat all her special trades is annoying as hell. Probably not gonna continue with the series.

Stupidly entertaining

Does it need editing? Absolutely. Like, a dozen drafts worth. Does the dialog read like high school fan fiction? Unfortunately. But was it massively entertaining? Eff yes.

You know those memes that are followed by "and everyone laughed" indicating that it didn't really happen and the story was all made up? The entire book reads like one of those stories. I did this and then they all laughed. I said this and they all laughed. I said "huh" and they all laughed.

I would go so far as to say the book is badly written. The execution is severely lacking.

BUT...it has original ideas and a main female character that I found funny. I wish the author would find a writing partner that could balance out the writing so the book could truly shine.

I'm not certain I would recommend this to a friend, but I will definitely read the next in the series.

DNF'd at 17%.

I keep borrowing books by this author, because the premises are good, and then DNF'ing them because the writing's meh and the characters are too cardboard. Over and over, I keep frustrating myself that I've not learned by lesson. Note to self - PLEEEEEASE pass on future books by this author...

One of the best books I read recently. No asshole MMCs, no whiny FMC and an interesting plot. I can't wait for book two!

Wow

I really enjoyed this book. The summary doesn’t scratch the depth of the story and I’m so glad I got to read it.
The female lead character is tested multiple times as human even though she seems to have some kind of precog abilities as well as hearing voices. She thinks she might be a touch crazy but as the book goes on…. We realize there’s more to her than even she knows. I loved how she didn’t take anyone’s sass. She meets 3 guys at her bar that perk her interest. There’s just something about them that grabs her attention. They pretend to walk her home after explaining there’s a rogue werewolf shifter on the loose. She ends up saving them with her quick wittiness and a gun with silver bullets and it only just intrigues the reader more. We didn’t know how fast and quick she was until right then. The guys gather themselves and leave with the what seems like an “impossible” hybrid, that stinks of chemicals. She gets called out on a kidnapping case from her second job is murdered while heading towards the destination of the kidnapping. She finds out that her boss set her up to be murdered to see if she truly was human or paranormal. Could she survive a bazooka blast? Only a paranormal could. She stumbles her way to her bestie from when she was a kid. A days walk, along with spirit guides helping her. Those 3 guys were at the house alongside her bestie. Van is so happy to see her, she’s still the same from what he remembered, quirky, sassy, independant, determined and she’s as beautiful now as she was back then. She does hide the weird paranormal stuff she can do, as she just can’t explain it and at this point still thinks she’s mostly human, just a weird one. She signs up to work for the paranormal investigation division to help as a human liaison and goes on a few cases. She brings up some good points and the guys trust her instincts. I absolutely loved how she was able to save one of the men at the end even if it was to show them her ability on coming back from the dead. Their heads must be SPINNING. Can’t wait to read the next book!

An amazing book

Quite honestly I love this book. I’ve always found fantasy books jump in so quickly to romance and spicy scenes that I never get the feeling of attachment to the characters. This is different. While hinting at future romances it delivers on much more subtle tension than right in your face. Each person in the book has more personality than just simply existing to get the dirty on for some sort of power boost. Also the FMC is a bad mamajama. It’s actually feels like a book written where the men are not simply toys but vital in the underlying stories twisted into the main plot of the first book. This genre is so over saturated with magical adult fantasy books in which is just adult content that I tend to skim through because the story is much more interesting and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thank you for not only writing a capable and interesting female main character but also for not writing the men off right away as basically bags of meat to plunder, an equal footing where they all feel like an MC and not just the support for a fmc to use as a way to thrive.

um…

I… don’t even know. The FMC had the mentality of a teenager and doesn’t act like a grown woman. The writing/explanations of things are so rushed and nonchalant. I think the author was way in over their head writing so many MMCs.

Over all. I don’t even know why I finished the book. It was disappointing and the plot was clearly changed a few times throughout it too…

This book may’ve had more potential I think. It was just not my cup of tea.

I enjoyed it a lot even though the FMC has a jumpy personality gets easily distracted and the writing style was exactly the same. That took some getting used to but after a few chapters I didn't mind that anymore.
I didn't expect the story to go the way it did in the first half which made me want to read more to get to know how the story would turn out in the end. However the second part could have had a bit more interesting turns and twists to actually keep me hooked.
The FMC is a confident and unwavering feisty woman. I would have liked to see some vulnerability to make her a bit more realistic but that could be just me. The MMCs were very likable but especially in the second half they started to feel kinda flat, just following the plot and lost their bad ass vibes that they had in the begining.

4 stars for enjoyment reasons, realistically though, probably a 3 ... there were some issues.

ok, so our heroine is a "human" even though she has many powers that would say otherwise, but she was tested, so she doesn't question it. (plot hole #1). Her past is a secret to her and others, except a few top level people who know a lot, but can't tell her anything. (problematic and potentially a plot hole) there are many more, but let's skip to the fact that her character (and those of her potential "harem") is/are way overpowered! like where do you go from here? she survived dying, can magic up bullets, isn't affected by other people's power, has spirit guides, can move at super human speed, everyone likes her (except for the bad guys) ... I repeat, where do you go from here?

That being said ... this was a fun read 😘

Too many guys. You couldn’t keep track of them all. Especially since almost all their names started with an R. Main character acted like a high schoolers. This book was very immature in its writing style and had many, many errors. Good storyline, not good writing. Very surface level characters.

Erm... goodish

2.75. An interesting read. I really like the feisty female main character. She was funny and quick. The guys were equally humourous too but so puppy eyes over the female MC. I have to be honest, around 50% in, I was really to be done. A new raccoon character was introduced and that put me over the limit with the numerous MCs. It was just too much to organize and really connect with. I could be completely off base but it was too much. The ending was not as surprising/suspenseful as it could have been since we know she's done it before. It also bothered me how she kept things from the guys. A lot of repeating things (ex. Betsy and her attachment, eating a crap ton of food). It was okay. I won't be reading book 2.

Down the rabbit hole

It takes a bit to get into this book because our heroine is all over the place mentally. The book does need editing but it doesn't take away from the plot. I feel like we've barely begun getting to unravel Neith. I kept guessing what she is and now I'm excited for book 2, I need to know if I was right.

Just go with it for those first chapters and you may actually enjoy this read. Plus on a very positive note she manages to keep her clothes on so the focus is on the plot. It is very much so a slow burn.

Good

WARNING: Cliffhanger! This one is fairly mild as they go, about a 3/5 on my trauma scale, but it’s the sort that leaves you wanting more information…

One minute she’s walking home, the next she’s running from a crazed shifter. It’s an encounter that leads Neith to meet some agents from the Supernatural Investigation Division, which then leads to her helping them out on their latest case…

Neith is a funny character, who amused me to the point of laughing out loud on several occasions. She’s definitely a “go with the flow” woman, which makes her an agent of chaos in the best ways.
Her team of supes (and presumably her love interests) are all equally intriguing, and I’m looking forward to learning a little more about them all.

This is a fast paced, action filled, chaos driven story, with fascinating characters set in a world where supernatural beings are out of the broom closet. It’s only part one, and hasn’t even slightly made a dent in the overarching background story (there are actually two), so you will want to line up the available books ready to read next!
This particular part of the story has no peppers, but you can see the buildup for those, as this is Slow Burn (well sort of, it’s slow for the reader since there hasn’t been on page steamy scenes yet).
Recommended for RH and Urban Fantasy fans.

>>Personal reading reminder notes/spoilers for the story, read further at your own risk<<

Neith is an unknown supernatural being who manages to come back from the dead. She was found by Van’s parents when she was a toddler, and her past is somehow being hidden from her. Both his parents, the SID boss, and her ogre friend Sully knew her parents, but none of them are able to tell her anything. Neither is the seer Navy, nor her spirit guide Winston, geis perhaps? Navy’s brother was killed in the experiments, she can track magic, and she seems to be important to Neith.
Neith also has an uncanny ability to find things, hears voices and has spirit guides. She’s apparently just coming into some unknown magic.

The HID tried to kill Neith, and they seem to be involved in a mad scientist experiment in which someone is creating hybrids, using kidnapped supernatural people and experimenting on them.
Doc is an incubus
Reed a powerful thing with wings
River a Kitsune with nine tails
Griff an ultra rare gargoyle
Evander no idea
Ransom is a powerful wizard/warlock
Raiden is a Reaper
