Reese Knightley spends her time creating stories from the characters rattling around in her head. Her love of reading mystery, action and adventure, and fantasy books led to her love of writing. Reese works as a full time writer. She loves to hear from her readers.
I liked Ice, I felt sorry for poor Echo and I was glad a certain someone got their just deserts at the end.
I'm eye-rolling a tad at the introduction of yet another secret underground black ops team of operatives, this one all ex-military assassins (Genesis), which no doubt will end up getting their own series later.
The plot in this one stayed closer to home, which was a welcome change, and didn't have the normal massive number of body counts as the teams rampage through the narrative.
I'm definitely interested in characters like Wrath and Fisher, who've been around for a while, and intrigued by the new ones we see more of here.
I didn't like the stab-happy sociopath Echo at all, despite his awful past and I'm usually a softy for sad pasts. I also didn't see the connection between Echo and Ice, in fact I don't think Echo is capable of any feelings or connections at all.
There were FAR too many characters thrown in which had me so confused - and that's from someone who has read and enjoyed every one of this author's books. Till now. I came close to DNF'ing a number of times.
Not sure if I'll continue with this series, given this book was a hot mess.
This wasn’t for me as scenes get too much triggering. I took a gamble with this story knowing it was an assassin themed storyline. I didn't get far into the story reading death and murder scenes.
A okay start as Ice is out for a stiff drink when he's caught in a situation between men with knives and guns. In the process he gets sliced from another assassin.
Ice was an assassin taking out the bad dudes that society doesn't want, now matter what he thought of the police. Erebus Assassins are a group hired out which Ice didnt work for many more but that other guy did. Echo was a man that Ice couldnt forget after their very brief meeting awhile back. And now Ice was looking for him.
This has scenes that are horrible to read with descriptive in deaths associated with murders.
I think this book is being used as a chance to shuffle characters around from all of the other interconnected series and to establish new teams and potential relationships. It acts as an epilogue of sorts to other series and an introduction to new characters. It is not a stand alone. However, there are too many characters, teams, couples and moving parts to try to sort it all out and create a good storyline in one fairly short book. It just didn’t work.
The story was choppy with brief flashes of events, then moving on to the next. The POV changed from one paragraph to the next without warning and then, in the second half of the book, a chapter here and there would be from the POV of a completely different character. I wanted to love the two MCs and really root for them, but it was mostly out of principle and not because I was able to really get to know them. Character development was impossible with the way the story jumped around and all of the information the author was trying to include.
I have read all of the previous interconnected series although it has been a couple of years for most of them. I remember really enjoying them and becoming invested in the characters and events. I’m doubting myself now, but they must have been good if I read so many series. Hopefully, this book is just a necessary summary and introduction of characters and the heart of the story will return in the next book. We’ve dabbled in at least four developing relationships so there is more to come. I don’t really like seeing all of the couples getting together and the issues between them before their story is told but I’m trying to believe that this will be a good series. Fingers crossed.
Contains: mūrdərər/@ssãssin, teams, bløød, crush at first sight, dark past, gŭn shøt, ƙñife/bŭllət wøund, explosìøn, kidnapp!ng, weirdest flirting ever lol.
Please, sensitive souls, this is a series with assassins hired to k!ll society's vermin. Of course, it includes all sorts of attrocities, a few emergency room visits, death, bløød more than you can imagine. Be sure to read the trigger warnings.
And for those like me, you are in the right place: this is our jam, bring it on. What a start to this new series! The action scenes are morbid and excellently written. Many characters we've seen before in this author's other series. Heavy pasts, complex characters who are affected by that past and afraid to open their box of feelings. Who've been doing this job for so long that they're lost in the darkness, devoid of any feelings about death or life in general.
Can they really have what everyone else has? To be happy? In love? Of course not.
There's something fishy going on in this team(And it's not Fisher, lol). Ice is back on the team, his reasons... um debatable. His pursuit of the man of his dreams will lead him straight to the hospital. Closer to death.
Echo is detached from his feelings. He's working more and more dangerously, and Ice is getting on his nerves. If only Ice would stop kissing him. He doesn't know what to do to push him away.
Between their heavy pasts, ptsd, indescribable scenes, set ups, paranoia, is love really an option?
Dive into this series, where love is demonstrated with kn!fe cut. You won't be able to put it down. Some elements were predictable, others not. I loved it. From beginning to end.
As always, as soon as I close the book, I'm already hoping to have the next one in hand. I don't know how she did it, but I can't wait for the next one and the next one and the next one. We always fell in love with all the characters, and now, i want to know their stories. Are they alright over there?
Wise advice: Don't start it at 11 o'clock at night!!
It. Had. Me. On. The. Edge. Of. My. Seat. What a fantastic book! Definitely very dark, probably the darkest/most intense from the author yet. There are on page m*urders, some r*ape situations are mentioned (not in great detail but are there) and other violent behaviors. It also wanders into the stalking/obsession/manic territory (but somewhere in the middle/end they are obsessed over each other so not really a one-side stalker obsession), so if you're not comfortable reading any of the above, then probably you should skip this book or even the whole series, because from what I reckon the whole series will be similar in taste to this one. If you don't want to get your reading affected, DO NOT reveal the spoilers here, because they contain some info from the book that can ruin it too soon if you read them. In the beginning I wasn't so sure about it, especially Echo. I was like... Is this a book about a sociopath/psychopath and I didn't get the memo? It just turns out that all the assassins have a wild streak in them, that the beast sometimes can't be controlled. It was cute how Ice had the hoots for Echo and was "courting" him, while Echo wasn't sure about that and wanted nothing to do with Ice - and then the roles reversed and Echo was obsessing over Ice, while Ice was not sure about Echo It was great to read about Echo opening up to Ice and mellowing down (at least emotionally because he's still a freakin' badass assassin). The plot was action packed, it was well written. Even the head-hopping wasn't as irritating as a couple of previous books, because it was somehow structured/you could rather clearly tell who was speaking. The plot-twist was not what I expected at all. You definitely have to read Operation Justice Force before this series because the characters are interconnected. I recommend either reading it in the order that can be viewed on the author's page (it is the order in which the author wrote the books), I combined a bit and did my own thing firstly Out for Justice, then Code of Honor, Operation Justice Force and Erebus Assasins; from Cobalt Security I read only the first three books because the series didn't interest me that much so I just kinda skipped it, and so far the only book that has a "real" connection with the other series (not only some mentioned characters) is the 3rd one about Jaxon. All in all I enjoyed this book much more than I expected. I couldn't put it away, I had to end it in one sitting.
Pairing ranking (and I think it will be a real fight in this series): 1. Echo & Ice
so much of Broken feels unexplored or incomplete, a jumble of characters and plot lines
Rating: 3.25🌈
Broken is the first book in a new connected series, Erebus Assassins, by Reese Knightly. If you’re familiar with other series and characters as well as the types of themes and storylines that come with them, you know exactly what to expect from Broken.
There will be damaged characters with intense relationship dynamics, shady or situational morality, and often painful, violent backgrounds.
And flowing through each other’s stories are the characters and couples from all the other series. Sometimes this works. Other times, as I feel it happens here, it doesn’t.
Broken opens as Ice unknowingly stumbles upon an assignment already in progress. An assassination is going down and the agent is Echo from another team. That Agency is one Ice used to work for . This violent brief interaction sets off a chain of chaotic events that include Ice stalking Echo, to the extent he’s quitting his job at work and rejoining another agency.
This is one example of the issues I see with the story. Knightley spends little time on developing any relationship between Ice and Echo to warrant this depth of obsessive interest or behavior. Ice just decides Echo is it for him and hunts him, whether Echo wants him to or not. In Echo’s case, it’s decidedly not.
Another is with all the various characters themselves. Some are carryovers and some are new. But the reader must be able to recognize them and remember who they are, how they fit into the different couples dynamics/agency structure and even current tortuous situations. Otherwise, it’s a constant struggle to understand who all these people are and how they fit together.
It’s all very unsupported and unsustainable for the book to have this many characters and their own narratives dropped in (and out) behind it.
Echo has a horrific history but it’s buried under everything else so the reader, at least I did, finds it hard to connect with. Which brings us back to the villain of the story.
That entire element, including his identity, just never felt plausible. From the size of the operation , and the fact that he had been able to run it as long as he had, given the facts, doesn’t seem believable framed out by all the other characters in the book. It seems more a dramatic needs element than a naturally occurring part of the story.
But so much of Broken feels unexplored or incomplete, a jumble of characters and plot lines. A new series should focus on new starts.
Why did this feel like Knightley took odds and ends from all her previous series and just dump them here?
Read this because you’re a fan of the author or like the other series. All those series listed below.
Suspenseful, action packed, and an interesting romantic pursuit
I have read a few other Knightley books and always enjoyed the action and suspense and the characters always got to me. I’m not sure why I stopped reading them. I’m for sure going to going down a rabbit hole now to catch up because the only complaint I have about this book (and it’s a me thing, not a book thing) is not knowing who every single character is and their back story! Yes, I’m a serious FOMO reader and I hate not knowing everything I could have known when I read a book. This book totally stands on its own if you aren’t riding my OCD train though!
I figured since this was book one in a series I’d be ok but I should have remembered that most of the author’s works are loosely connected. Let me stress again, you DO NOT have to have read other books to enjoy his book. It’s just a “thing” for me, especially as I am for the most part a series reader. I like feeling like part of the family. So if you share that trait I’d say read through the author’s backlist before starting this book.
So having said all that, this is an eventful, suspense filled book about an assassin, Ice, who has what we’d normally say is a frightening and painful encounter with another assassin, Echo, but who instead is intrigued by him and wants to woo him. Echo is neither amused nor interested which he demonstrates in several sharp ways. But Ice is not to be deterred! Ice takes steps to try and find and get to know Echo but Echo has a very dark past and doesn’t see that possibility for himself.
The story is tense and emotional. There are several places that I just wanted to give these dangerous killers a hug! As usual with Knightley’s books these are “bad” guys fighting on the side of good. Shadowy organizations doing the work that the justice system seems incapable of. More and more these days I’m beginning to think our justice system is compromised so I’m on board with the goals here even though I know I shouldn’t be. There’s one scene in the book where there is doubt about an assignment but it’s never resolved what exactly the problem was and that bothered me. I didn’t quite get the point of the scene.
As the book heads towards its final showdown there are surprises, tense encounters with other assassins, and quite a bit of foreshadowing as to who the next couples may be. Looking forward to what comes next.
Ice and Echo, two assassins that work for Erebus, an organization dedicated to taking out the really bad guys that slip through the system. Ice is former spec ops and signed with Erebus when he got out because the SecDef thought he needed it. Then he left. Echo, Rogue and Fisher came to Erebus through a much darker channel once Dave hired Solomon to run the program. Ice runs into Echo on a Pegasus Op and is drawn to him but Echo disappears. He rejoins Erebus to find him. A hook-up in the aftermath of an assignment brings out something in both men, but Echo runs because he knows he is broken. Ice is determined to have him for his own but Echo is not going make it easy. Even though Erebus is supposed to be the “good guys” the background and sub plot in this one are convoluted and dark. No spoilers here but this is a dark tale so please check for triggers before reading. But there is an HEA and this is the first book in the new series
I’ve been waiting for Ice’s story for a while now. Ice was a retired assassin when he met his love interest Echo who was also an assassin so he decided he was going to go back to work in Erebus so he could get close to echo. What he didn’t know in the beginning was echo is a tortured soul who won’t let ice get close. Every time Ice tracks him down Echo stabs him to get away. Echo goes after someone who is trying to blackmail him and runs into Ice thinking he’s out to get him. Ice ends up shot by echo but echo realizes something isn’t right and he rescues Ice. Both have been set up and they need to find out who is behind it. This book is full of action, suspense, trauma, and eventually happiness. What a great start to the Erebus assassin series. I’m so looking forward to the next book.

I’ve been waiting for a while to see Ice’s story about how him and Echo get together. We met Ice a few series back and he was always so elusive and mysterious, never staying around for long., never seemed to have any attachments, on his own, on the go all the time. This book shows a different side of Ice that surprised me. If you thought that Ice was mysterious he’s got nothing on Echo, he’s sleath personified, like a ninja. This one is action packed as always but one of my favorite things in Reese’s books is the found family and the interconnection between the characters and other books in her series. I’m very intrigued by the other couples that were set up in the book and I look forward to seeing how those progress as well.
Broken is a great start to the new Reece Knightley series Erebus Assassins. The main characters Ice and Echo meet whilst Echo is ‘working’ and Ice becomes obsessed with him. The storyline is good, not much spice but it didn’t feel missing. If you haven’t read the other series prior to this you will be lost at time as many old characters are in here with little explanation of their past and relevance. Even though I’ve read everything Reece Knightley I often wondered where do I know that name from. That said I’m looking forward to Agony, Justice and Fisher’s story.
Ice and Echo had kissed. And spent a brief and wild time together. Ice had fallen for him but Echo disappeared on him. And now the chase was on. He was going to find Echo, catch him, and make him his. Even if it killed him. Echo should have never screwed the blue-eyed blond. But he had. He couldn’t say why, but Ice got on his last nerve. So he wounded the guy a couple of times. Since then, Ice seemed to be in his way every time he turned around.
This was a dark story with the intensity of the two men and the violence between them. There was so much passion, danger and drama between and around them. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
Ice meets Echo by chance in the middle of an assignment, and can’t let go. Echo is stone cold with avoids human interaction, but he can’t avoid Ice. For a “former” SecDef Dave is a busy guy, there were glimpses of Erebus in the past but it’s front and center, the idea is honorable assassins making the world better by eliminating powerful psychopaths, the only problem is there’s one hiding in plain sight in their midst. There’s a lot going on as this is starting a new series, there’s some people we’ve met along the who have stories to tell. So buckle up.
Quite good, yes, and got better toward the end. What felt odd, was that in the beginning there were suddenly lots of people who just got there somehow. I even couldn't know who was who and why... did I begin a serie in the middle or what? When reading something, I prefer that story's people are introduced to reader in a way reader can feel that she/he is able to remember the names and who are the mc and so on... not just 20 men at the same time. The relationship between the two mc's was one of a kind. Although I didn't like all the telling and writing, I think this book worth of 3,5 stars for it wasn't in some well used pattern but different from many other assassin stories.
A chance encounter it's all it took for Ice. He can't get the mysterious Assassin out of his mind. Going back to Erebus, the secret group of assassins brought into existence by the Sec Def, is his only option for a chance to find out who the man is and get close him. The hunt has started. Echo has no interest in people. He wants to do what he does best, killing people, and stay under the radar. That he's being harassed by this guy, who just won't give up, is just annoying. He's fighting the inkling of interest thats sparking to life. Because he's just to Broken.
I am glad that this was a shorter story because my nerves couldn't have taken a longer one. I loved Ice and Echo and their weird as hell courtship of Echo stabbing and shooting Ice almost every time they met at first. I was pissed as hell at Dave because of Solomon because just because Solomon was the son of a colleague he wasn't vetted properly and turned out to be as a monster as the people they were hunting down. I hope the kids will be okay especially Azrael. Looking forward to the next book.
I certainly didnt see half what went down coming. Echo and Ice played the resistance game for a while before thrown in a situation that was meant to literally tear them apart but actually brought them closer together. The introduction of the other characters and the hint of another group raises the anticipation of what's still to come. If you enjoy ex military, action and assasins who seem broken but just looking for HEA with someone who loves them, then you will enjoy this or any of the author's other series. Bring on book 2.
WOW another amazing book from Reese Knightley they just keep on getting better with every new story. This is the start of a new series but still involves the guys from other branches. Ice and Echo's story is a full on hard start to a relationship, the storyline is a sad one due to the content but with the help of the guys, lives and people can recover. I highly recommend all of Reese's books and I promise you will not be disappointed with any of them.
Meh, at first I liked it due to the connection I thought would happen and there was a small enough amount of angst in the beginning to keep me interested. Once the story really got going, I was falling asleep during some of the scenes.
2 assassins, it stars out as a tiny bit of enemies to lovers but it's more like unrequited "like".
I didn't like that the author didn't write a love connection between the characters or have any scenes with them interacting with each other.
Dang, I was hooked on these characters and their story the entire book. I'm back to write this after having finished book 3 and what a ride it has been. There are so many great characters. Lots of them have been through so much and I'm so happy to see them getting through it all. Definitely recommend reading but check your trigger warnings. It's a lot, but so good.
Ice and Echo were in a couple of the other books but they get their own books here. I feared for Ice's life. Echo stabbed him, cut him and shot him. Talk about playing hard to get. This was a good story and a good beginning to a new series.
What an awesome start to a new series and features Ice and Echo. They have known each other for a while. After they got together, Echo disappeared and Ice went after him for more. They both work for Erebus and this company is one of the good guys. When they work together to help take down someone they get closer. I love these series and this author never disappoint. I cannot wait to read more.
Reese Knightley has another winning series on!! We branch out into a new super secret group that shows us some new faces and brings back ones we love. This books has twists and turns that one would expect from a group of people that lurk in the shadows. This is one book I wish I could re read for the first time. There's action, mystery, and romance all in one. I definitely recommend.
Looks like Reese has another winning series on their hand. I have been excited to read about Ice's story since reading about him in the other books and this book did not disappoint in any way, I loved him with Echo and learning their stories.
After reading Hawk I went straight into this and I was so invested I sat up to finish it . Fabulous plot and characters and I wasn’t even bothered there was hardly any spice because it was really good . Now I have to be patient and wait for Justice & Fishers book.
Another delicious spin off in the dynamic and lethal world of alpha MCs that I can never get enough of! It’s now the assassins’ turn to fall in love and I’m all there for it! Book one was great with all the twists and turns, plus the love and chemistry. Perfect series opener!
I enjoyed this book but had some issues with it in places. If you haven't, I would definitely suggest reading the other series by this author, or you might be a little lost on some conversations and events.
This had the makings of a good book but I’m disappointed in it. Echo was a bit too stab happy and I’ve just came off as a bit pathetic to chase after him. If someone tired to kill me that many times. Uh..buh bye. Regardless of the “connection”.
