A collection of eleven short stories ranging from new mythology to a cup of coffee with a friend, from up in a hot air balloon to cutting fabric in the back of an upholstery store. The back of the book says, "Emily R. Lee has a way of wrapping the ordinary in magic. Her storytelling creates its own mythology detailing the wildness of nature and the connections between people. These stories resonate with wonder, revealing beauty and often uncovering the bizarre. The Other Side of the Pali is Lee's first collection of stories."
If I were Hawaiian and stranded outside my home, The Other Side of the Pali would definitely make me homesick. Emily Lee has written a wonderful book full of stories about life on the islands, and life in general, infused with a sense of magical realism that could only exist in an exotic place such as Hawaii. Even if you've never been to the islands (and I haven't), give this book a read.
I am definitely a fan of Emily Lee's work. Her stories captivate me and play with my imagination. This collection is no exception. There is a quiet magic lurking in every sentence, a respect and curiosity for each place. This is the kind of book to curl up with on a dark winter's night.
This is my book, written with everything I had at the time. It was my final thesis project for my MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts. I also designed, hand-stamped and published this book. If you are interested in having your own copy, check out my website, http://www.fishtailpress.com.
