Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.
Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.
Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.
I was so excited to finally get ahold of this second DD anthology! I loved the first one, “Coming to Terms”. Being in a Domestic Discipline relationship myself, I love finding DD authors who get it right, make the characters likable, and make it entertaining in the process. Well, these authors not only got it right, they entertained me thoroughly with their different stories.
Some were emotional and heartwarming. Some were short and fun. Some were longer and intense. Some were sexy! (And some were reeeeeeeally sexy!) And some had wonderful and deep plots that got me thinking about my own relationship with my husband. Though the stories were different, they all had one wonderful thing in common. Domestic Discipline. It’s different for every couple, as showcased in this anthology. I loved it, and cannot wait to see what these authors come up with next.
Here is a brief synopsis of each of the stories.
Cara Bristol, Major Changes
This was a fantastic story about military man coming home to his wife to find that an awful lot has changed during his two year tour in Afghanistan. Rahm and Cadence had a DD marriage for years, but had to work hard to gain back the trust and teamwork they had before his tour. Cadence had to be strong, and take care of all family issues, and even started a new career, while Rahm was overseas. But they both find, very quickly, that though they want to go back to the way things used to be, a lot has changed. I loved Rahm’s cool dominance, but also appreciated his warm and loving care for his wife. I loved Cadences duality between loving and disliking the spankings. This was the perfect example of want and need in a DD relationship, set in a beautiful storyline. I also appreciated that this was a couple that was in their 40’s, and not the usual 20 and 30 something’s. I loved this story! ____
Alta Hensley, The Barn
Paige and Connor have their work cut out for them, they have to rebuild an old barn and rebuild their broken relationship and hearts from 12 years ago. These two have a fantastic connection, I could feel the spark between them. Great writing! Memories of their young love, spankings, his dominance, her submission. How she felt so safe in his arms. Wonderfully written! I loved her confliction and pride. She wanted him to spank her to rekindle their old relationship, but didn’t want to let him know she felt this way. Their first spanking was so intense, so sexy. I loved it! This was a very quick read, but was packed with a lot of emotions. I loved the barn as the symbol of home and their love.
___
Unmet Desire, Renee Rose
This was an emotionally packed story- wonderful, filled with love and passion. I adored Luis and Claire in the first anthology. This was more dramatic account about Claire and Luis, in which they are doing wonderfully in their DD relationship- all except the heart wrenching pain with every failed pregnancy attempt. This was beautifully written and showed Claire’s emotions perfectly. I could empathize so easily with the burden and stress and ache while also having no control over a situation. Luis was the perfectly imperfect HOH. He wanted to help his suffering wife, but couldn’t figure out how to fix the situation. I loved when he finally came to the conclusion to do what he did best- to take charge, to dominate. They even incorporate a boot camp. I love a well written boot camp where the HOH, shows his care and desire to better their relationship, and that it is not just about lording over her or spanking her around the clock. This story showed both sides of a spanking relationship: the sexy, arousing spankings as well as punishment spankings. They both added to the intensity of the plot, making for an awesome story. This was sexy, had a lot of great spankings for such a short read, and told a great emotional story. I loved it! _____ Sue Lyndon, A Time To Heal
After taking off from DD while she recovered from cancer, Stephie resents still being treated like she is going to fall apart with one single touch. She resents Marcus coddling her like a child, and not following through on his threats of a spanking. Very emotionally intense. I loved the descriptions like the dark clouds over their relationship, or the storm brewing. This one kept my heart racing. It was beautiful. I loved Marcus’s POV. He was so scared of hurting her, and had so many haunting memories of her pain and sickness. Wow, this was intense! I loved the brilliant first punishment, in which he used a wooden spoon, but it wasn’t on her bottom. And it gave them both the moment they needed. His dominance. Her submission. Wonderful! I loved the dynamic between these two, as Marcus took over control of Stephie. The fun spanking in the bedroom that turned into a punishment, the awesome masculine authority he oozed. This guy was amazing. The sex was hot, and the comments they made to each other in the bedroom, after the first punishment spanking, were like a vault had opened. It all just came tumbling out in one huge scene of, wow! I loved how he handled the huge punishment scene. Loving, firm, in charge, and also sexy as hell! Great story! ___ Celeste Jones, Making it Write
Jill is a home maker, member of the PTA, in a DD relationship with her husband, Owen, and she has a naughty secret. She is an author of steamy, sexy spanking romance books. But she can’t tell anyone about her writing or her relationship. So she has to play it safe, and keep quiet. Even when someone close to her makes it extremely difficult. This was such a fun story! I loved the scene changes between her real life, and her story within a story. And I loved how Owen disciplined and played with her. But I also appreciated the message the author sent, about respect, safety, while doing it in a light, fun way. By the way, the sex in this one- whoa momma! Great story!

Jade Cary, October Something
This was a very deep story about a couple on the verge of divorce. It was a longer read, and had a lot more emotion in it, but I enjoyed it. Kate and Jack Barrington have made mistakes in their relationship, and it is all about to end. But Jack surprises her, and shows a new side of himself. There was a lot of cool back story and memories to build the plot. This was very well written, and described beautifully, the pain and yearning of their almost broken hearts. And the beauty of a rekindled romance.
__ Anastasia Vitsky, The First Submission
This is a F/F science fiction spanking romance about Sori an Koi. It is the prequel to the story ‘Becoming Clissine. I am not a regular reader of the F/F genre. But, I can say without a doubt, this author is fantastic. Her writing and creativity pour wonderful drama and emotions onto the page using her talented abilities to really take you into the scene, to feel it, taste it, breathe it. For a reader looking for a taste of F/F this is an excellent story to get your feet wet with. Bred to uphold duty and tradition from the cradle, rising legal scholar Sori shrinks from marriage and assuming the role of disciplinarian. Temper pot Karie longs for freedom as a First Responder and scorns the fusty Sori. In this prequel to Becoming Clissine, Karie and Sori must choose their own happiness. Can they find love in an arranged marriage?
Domestic Discipline in short story offerings. I wasn't sure what to expect when this anthology crossed my dash. I found that each of the 7 stories by 7 different authors treated the subject/lifestyle with dignity and compassion. They could have substituted any lifestyle choice in the stories and they still would have been good reads. They just happened to be good reads about spanking. Of course, as with any group of short stories I liked some more than others, and I didn't read them all in one sitting. I thought it was a good introductory piece for the varied authors and I will most likely read more from the majority. *I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
Milestones is a fabulous anthology. Each author provided a great tale. They're all so different from each other too. One will make you giggle and another will make you cry, but they all pull at your heart strings.
It's a fabulous collection of spanking stories and it reminds me that I need to read more stories by each of these authors.
It's definitely a must read if you enjoy spanking stories.
I received a copy of Milestones in exchange for my honest and fair review.
I enjoyed this great selection of DD stories. Most were by authors I enjoy:- Sue Lyndon, Renee Rose, Alta Hensley, Celeste Jones , Cara Bristow plus a new one in Jade Cary. All left me wanting more and to know what happened next. The only one I didn't read was The First Submission, which appeared to be set in a world of which you needed previous knowledge of.
Not often I enjoy so many books in a short story selection.
So upfront I want to say that I debated how to rate this book. Yes, I'm friends with all these women, but I generally look forward to reading most of the books they publish together (like the anthology "Coming to Terms" that preceded this book) and separately. However, this is a domestic discipline book and more often I prefer more BDSM-oriented books. "Terms" did a much better job overcoming some of my dislikes in DD books than this one did, hence 4 instead of 5 stars. I did enjoy each of the stories, some more than others (yes, Anastasia's "The First Submission" was by far my favorite and I blogged at length about my anger at a reviewer who complained about "the lesbian story.")
"Major Changes" by Cara Bristol: I was intrigued to see how Rahm and Cadence would work out issues in their marriage after he returned from a tour of duty. Maybe times I empathized with Cadence and felt Rahm was just not listening to her and being a bully. Yup :D, he was being a good Head of the Household, but he felt like a bully to me. Not that she did a good job being honest with him. In the end, Cara lead this couple to a most satisfying place in their marriage.
"The Barn" by Alta Hensley: I loved the emotion that Alta showed with Paige and Connor, Paige returned "home" to find her first true love still waiting for her. I enjoyed seeing Paige refuse to give up on her dream of restoring the barn that had meant so much to her during a turbulent childhood. I adored watching the spark of the relationship kindle between them as they admitted they were still deeply in love.
"Unmet Desire" by Renee Rose: With Renee's story, I was thrilled to see Claire and Luis from her story in "Coming to Terms." Watching Claire struggle with fertility and how she'd rested too much control from Luis, her Head of the Household, was so sad. There were some hilarious moments- like Claire getting out of a speeding ticket. Luis taking her to their cottage was perfect. I found myself trying to do the "DD boot camp" with them, even thinking so far as to print up Luis' questions for my Master and I to answer :D. The ending was perfect.
"A Time to Heal" by Sue Lyndon: While my personal issue is bipolar depression, not cancer, I could so relate to Stephie in this story. As she did different things to act out, I thought of times I'd done stuff like that. This story held my attention from beginning to end. Marcus' tentativeness was so believable, given the situation. Where Sue brought these two by the end of the story was a glorious example of DD working out.
"Making it 'Write'" by Celeste Jones: I wanted to like this story from the beginning- a short story about a writer? But here I did struggle to enjoy the story. I still debate if it was about the story itself or my reality and how it makes me see the story. I wanted to like Jill, but the way she approached writing spanking fiction irritated me. I did enjoy reading the snippets of Jill's story that were included within the story. Owen seemed to be a very sweet husband and when he needed to stand firm about Jill's misbehaviors, I enjoyed reading it very much.
"The First Submission" by Anastasia Vitsky: Now I haven't read every book of Anastasia's, but I have yet to read one that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I geeked out with the cast of characters and glossary section that kicked off the story. Whether it's platonic or romantic, I love her female/female pairings. I loved going on the journey with Soris and Karielle as they moved from meeting before their arranged marriage to an important day in their relationship. I couldn't help at smiling at the end, at what Soris learned from Karielle.
"October Something" by Jade Cary: I loved the tone of the story, the level of description employed by Jade, from the beginning of the story. Kate and Jack are amazing. Kate's desperate unhappiness, filing for divorce. Jack's determination to fight for Kate, for her marriage with her made me so unbelievably happy. No telling how the HEA came, but Jade definitely delivered and Jack and Kate were wonderful.
Milestones is an anthology with seven short stories with domestic discipline as a theme. Domestic Discipline is introduced lightly in a hot fast-paced book.
This anthology brings in each short story a different setting and a very well-created plot with some very good scenes. Most characters are well developed and easy to connect. Also the stories are very believable and enjoyable.
I've truly enjoy this book because most of the domestic discipline scenes are original and fun to read. The book is fast and it left me wanting to read more. I've also met some new to me authors that I`m really looking forward to reading more in the future.
I believe this is the perfect read for beginning readers of domestic discipline. I also recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of kinky on their romance books.
These seven stories were sweet. I guess it was not really my kind of book. I discovered that I do not like anthologies. Some of these stories were better than others. So it really hard to review.
