Welcome to the indulgence of Civitas

What a great follow on from ‘Land of the Unaltered’! Continuing straight on from the first book, Leti Del Mar keeps up the pace with the setting moving to the intriguing city of Civitas. This was a read I couldn’t put down and it was very easy to rate it five stars.

In my review of the first book, I noted how easy it was to imagine the craziness of Civitas from Rose’s descriptions. This time the story takes place in this city and the author’s descriptions were so vivid that it brought it alive in my imagination, leaving me hungry to find out more about this indulgent place. The intense desire to follow fashion (in this book it went from tangerine to turquoise and then to black and gold!) is quite believable based on how Del Mar has described the characters. We finally meet Rose’s mother and her friend Constantine and I just loved how different they are in comparison to Flynn and his upfront way of living back in Eureka.

Both Rose and Flynn find themselves being pulled in two directions as they settle in to life in Civitas. Whilst Rose is desperate to please her father, Flynn cannot forget the mission they are supposed to be completing and is keen to get home to a Eureka as soon as possible. The dual narrative once again allows the reader to be privy to both Rose and Flynn’s feelings, particularly as they feel themselves drifting apart because of the distractions that Civitas has to offer. However, what I found surprising was that the author causally does not include information about the characters which we do not follow, for example Flynn racing transportation in the afternoons, and this little extra detail I think would have added even more to the portrayal of life in this city.

The mystery that Rose and Flynn are working on deepens in this story and the romance definitely takes a back seat. The revelations that came throughout were mostly surprising to me and I really enjoyed the final showdowns leading up to the ball and then on to the end. Del Mar has definitely set readers up for an exciting conclusion and I can’t wait to read what happens next.

This is a great read and one I could easily imagine being turned in to a film. I really enjoyed reading about the city of Civitas and we are finally given that extra information about the great virus that caused society to change. There is a lot of scope to cover in the next story and it would appear that the other cities also get involved, so I am keen to see what role they play. I read ‘Secrets of the Unaltered’ in one day because it was so enjoyable and got me hooked so quickly. Bring on the next title!

Review From In Between The Lines

This book was really good. We started out only a few hours after the first one ended. Rose and Flynn are on the convoy on their way back to Civitas. They are about to try and find the secrets of the capitol. Find the secrets that can also bring Civitas down for good. Can Flynn and Rose count on each other? What happens when Rose finds out just what her Father is up to? And how will she handle it?

We open right as the first one ended. The second book is still double POV which I still love. I really liked this book. The beginning was a little slow for my taste, plus I hate David. But I stuck it out and I am so glad I did. We get to see the evil that is within the capital of the confederation and just how much Rose’s father is involved. Rose and Flynn were really tested in this book. Not only as individuals but as a couple. They had to learn to trust in each other and their relationship. I was rooting for them the entire time. I mean who wouldn’t. They have to face so much together.

Both Rose and Flynn have to face their weaknesses and they are also exploited time and time again, until those weaknesses start to become their strengths.

Rose’s mother and father are freaking ridiculously good in this story. They are the definition of evil and they do it so well. They bring another element to this book that the first one just didn’t have. They each bring something different to the story and it was really interesting to read.

Like I said the beginning was slow for my but other than that the story had a good flow to it. You kind of have to work to get to the go parts where the author found her groove but if you stick it out it is totally worth it. The plot just keeps building and building. It builds so much that by the time you get to the end you are holding your breath. And what an ending that was. Such a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next one….

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I've read the first book in the Confederation Chronicles – Land of the Unaltered- and I really liked that book. Secrets of the Unaltered continues the story of Flynn and Rose which is set in a dystopian society where appearance and following the trend is everything for those who live in the capital city of Civitas. In this second book, they head back to the capital city, with Meliah joining them. By the time I reached the end, I found myself drawn deeper into this tale. Having read books 1 and 2, I definitely want to read the third book. We learn more about some of the details addressed in the first, including some surprising revelations.

Rose Dartmoor is a great character. It's interesting to see how she's further developed, as well as Flynn Rivers in Secrets of the Unaltered. Their relationship is strained a bit by what's going on, but for both of them, the reasons are understandable. I also like Constantine. There's one scene in this book that features him and Flynn, and I was cracking up as I read it.

One of my favorite parts of this series is the great descriptions of the scenery, and can picture it clearly in my mind. That was true in the first book, with the town of Eureka surrounded by forest the same way Civitas is a city of glass, steel, and concrete lit up with whatever the fashionable color is.

I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to those who like dystopian fiction. Leti Del Mar has created an intriguing world, and I give this book 5/5 platypires.

*I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.*

Picking up right where the first book left off, Rose and Flynn are headed into the heart of the capital that could rip them apart or bring them closer together than before. Once there, secrets surround them and trying to find the truth in a government of lies could prove harder than they ever thought.

While I really liked the first book, I completely, 100% adored this sequel. The stakes go up way higher than I expected, and I just love the twists that are put in here that I never saw coming. As for Rose and Flynn, they both grow spectacularly in this. They are tested over and over as a couple and as individuals, and I never stopped rooting for them throughout their journey. Their weakness are constantly pushed to become their strengths, and I really hope to see more of their growth in the next book. I also love the characters we finally meet: Rose's father and mother. They are so perfectly villainous, and I love their unique additions to the story. The plot builds up wonderfully to the last breathtaking chapters of the book. The writing in this sequel has matured so well from the first book (that was still great) that the whole story shines beautifully. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next.

This book is the second in the Confederation series and is a YA Dystopian romance. Flynn Rivers and Rose Dartmoor are returning to the Capital of the Confederation called Citivas. They have joined the rebellion and are on a mission to infiltrate the records at the hospital and find out more about the genetically enhanced soldiers that they discovered near Eureka.

The City is full of people obsessed with their looks. They have their facial features altered for fashion. They also go to extreme lengths with colours to be fashionable. Whilst in the city, Rose's father wants her to study medicine, an extremely bright learner, Rose believes this chance may help the rebel cause.

Flynn gets a job helping out in a botany lab and learns about plants as medicines, which will help the people who live unaltered lives. But they can't find any records about the soldiers. What does the prison hide? Rose believes the prison has the answers and the pair go on a dangerous mission to the prison records room and discover just how far some of the genetic experiments have gone.

This is spine tingling tale about how far people will push for power, vanity and desperation. The story will continue in book three.
