Jackie

Have you ever found yourself in a situation that just seems to get messier by the second? Well, I have. Quite a few times. But researching the Cult of Creatio was slowly becoming the messiest situation yet.

To make matters worse, I was slowly falling for the one man I shouldn’t. The man my mentor had sworn me off. The man who was slowly invading my every thought. The man who decided to help me research the cult and I was now spending almost every day with. That man was William Bly.

Will

Love wasn’t something I did. It was something I avoided. I had spent a lifetime keeping the darkness within myself hidden. Love could expose it. I avoided it like the plague.

Yet, every time I looked at Jackie James, the darkness disappeared bit by bit. She was slowly becoming my world. But, I couldn’t have her. Couldn’t love her.

Right?

Diluted Truths
Arc review
By: H.J. Cartwright
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

The plot for this book is what has kept me hooked this entire time. This is a slow burn but it felt like they fell in love instantly. It also felt like everything was going right for the main characters. There was no issues with anything. Other than that this book is good. The plot of finding out what this cult is about and why it’s showing up now has me liked reading this. Jackie and Will are also both very likable. They both have their dark pasts but are both willing to acknowledge and work on that to be with each other and better each other. The love will and Jackie have for each other is cute and seeing how Will is more than willing to drop everything to run to help Jackie makes my heart melt.

Great balance of suspense and romance. The love for the found family is as strong as the sibling love and it melted my heart. Silly banter between characters brought a smile to my face on several occasions.
The thrill had a good balance of "magic and mystery" with facts and evidence, definitely tied me in enough to want to read another to learn more about the Cult of Creatio.

FAVORITE QUOTES:

“She was sunshine”
“Where ever you are right now is where I need to be”

I loved the suspense in this book! Definitely kept you on your toes about whats to come. The romance in the book was cute. It gave touch her and die vibes. The sibling and found family aspect was probably my favorite part seeing how strong it truly was! The silly banter was another favorite part for me!

The only down fall from this book was it became a little repetitive for me and I was waiting for it to get to the point. I felt like things were left unsaid towards the end leaving you with no answers. Hopefully with book two more pieces will fall into place.

Overall the suspense kept me intrigued the whole time and I want to know more!

⭐️⭐️💫 (two and a half rounded up to three)

I’d like to say thank you to H.J. Cartwright for this free ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This book was a debut novel about Jackie and Will, two academics who are doing research on a cult after a kidnapping/disappearance of a child takes place in Jackie’s hometown.

This book was advertised as a slow burn, forbidden romance and it was honestly neither of those things. There was immediate attraction and confessed feeling within the first 30% of the book. Both MC’s had like two conversations and one trauma dumping session before they realized they loved each other. It was more physical than emotional, I felt like, and it really took me out of the story.

It was also really repetitive. Everyone with brown hair had blue eyes. Most of the people described honestly, had blue eyes. And if you read this, you will constantly hear about Will’s “startlingly blue eyes”. It’s a lot.

Also, there were a few things that either were completely glossed over or weren’t really resolved in the end. I know it’s eluding to a second book but I still have a couple of questions that weren’t even hinted at being answered.

The actual cult plot and the mystery of it all is what kept me intrigued. I couldn’t wait to find out about the Cult of Creatio and everything that entailed. I feel like if this book had been advertised as a mystery/thriller romance, my expectations would have been set properly.

Either way, it wasn’t a bad book. I liked it enough and congratulation to H.J. for the publication!

4.5 ✨

Less than 48 hours and devoured from cover to cover.

Spice level was about a 1.5 🌶️. It’s the slow burn and epilogue that brought it up to the halfsie.

No spoilers: Cults? True love? Family? Secrets? This has it all and I’m excited for the next book of the series.

This is book one in The Advocates series and I have so many questions! I was hooked on all the conspiracies and needed to know more.

For the ending... how did they do it? What does it all mean?! HOW DO THEY STOP IT?!! I was anxious for half the book!

I already love the found family aspect and the different personalities. The chemistry between Jackie and Will was great and I really loved how they trusted each other. I also need character art of Will and all of those tattoos... 😏

The ending seemed a little abrupt and didn't solve much but I like it enough to continue the series!

**I am an ARC reader. This has no bearing on my review or rating.**

Thank you, H.J. Cartwright, for allowing me the chance to check out your debut novel. I was a bit nervous because this isn't one of the genres I typically read, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance! The characters were easy to love and the added mystery from the cult kept you on the edge of your seat.

The plot of this book was interesting. I liked the idea of the Cult of Cretio and the that Jackie and her siblings were somehow connected to it. I feel like there could have been a lot more information given about the cult but if felt like that story took second place to the romance. I really like the idea of the plot and was left wanting more details. I was waiting for some things to resolve or be explained but ending was abrupt. I also felt the epiloge didn't add anything to the story line or give any intrigue into the next book. I hope book two can give some more answers.

H.J. Cartwright’s The Advocates series is a captivating blend of romance, suspense, and supernatural intrigue, anchored by the James siblings and their entanglement in a centuries-old cult that traces back to the Salem Witch Trials. Across the four-book series, each sibling steps into the spotlight, bringing with them unique emotional arcs, romantic journeys, and pieces of a dark familial legacy that slowly comes into focus.
Overall Impressions of the series:
The series opens strong, with the first book establishing an eerie, romantic atmosphere and a compelling mystery. Cartwright’s writing is immersive and descriptive, especially in the early installments, weaving an addictive narrative that balances emotional vulnerability, romantic tension, and creeping suspense. The cult storyline initially grips the reader with shadowy hints, historical echoes, and supernatural threads, elements that tease but rarely overwhelm.
However, as the series progresses, cracks begin to show. While the mystery remains intriguing, the cult's presence shifts from central narrative force to romantic catalyst. Inconsistencies begin to emerge: some supernatural elements (like the ominous shadows in photographs or unexplained phone calls) fade without resolution, and important revelations are often sidestepped with convenient distractions, , emotional hesitation, forgetfulness, or misdirection.
Themes of destiny and familial bonds remain the backbone of the series. Each sibling appears fated not only to a role within the cult but also to a soulmate, a narrative choice reinforced by the dual POV format that deepens emotional stakes. Cartwright excels in portraying nuanced family dynamics and drawing emotional parallels between the James siblings and their partners, especially through mirrored parental relationships. These moments of reflection foster character growth and elevate the emotional resonance of each romance.
Yet, the plot leans heavily on coincidence. Key discoveries often feel orchestrated rather than earned, and secondary characters occasionally serve as plot tools rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. Despite these flaws, Cartwright’s ability to craft tender, vulnerable moments, often paired with well-executed spicy scenes, keeps the story grounded and emotionally engaging.
Book 1: Jackie & Will
The series launches with Jackie, a fiery and emotionally scarred heroine navigating the aftermath of trauma, including domestic violence and family estrangement. Flashbacks provide rich insight into her growth, and her journey is both empowering and heartbreaking. The romance with Will, an age-gap, opposites-attract dynamic, adds heat and emotional depth. Themes of healing and self-discovery are front and center.
While the cult plot is intriguing, it feels somewhat underdeveloped here, functioning more as a mysterious backdrop than a driving force. The writing, however, is strong and keeps the tension tight. Jackie’s wit, Will’s protectiveness, and their undeniable chemistry set a strong foundation for the series.

I went in blind on this book except for the tropes! I honestly had no idea what I was getting in to! This book has been on my tbr really since it came out earlier this year but I am glad I waited until now to read it because it definitely has the creepy vibes with our two main characters investigating a cult.

I loved Jackie. Even though she had a crappy childhood and honestly a hard life for the most part she was positive, sassy, strong and hilarious. She was also dedicated to her work, determined and stubborn. She took her past and it made her a better person. She had very few people in her life but she loved them big and hard. I loved Jackie's journey through this book even the not so great parts for her. She truly is a very relatable and strong fmc!

Will. Will was so swoon worthy honestly. He was just a genuinely good guy even though he didn't have a good role model growing up. He also has a dark past and he made sure that his path and life was different. He was charming and charismatic and also funny. He has his walls up and didn't trust easily but through the book you slowly start to see that change. I just loved him.

Jackie and Will's relationship was so cute. The way he pursued her and made sure she knew that she was safe and loved and that she could trust him. Jackie made will open up and love. Their story was honestly beautiful and I love how they chose each other over everything else.

I have to say though Sarah was my favorite person in this book. My favorite person is always a side character but I just loved her so much. She is such an amazing woman, wife and friend! She is hilarious and straight to the point and I love that she uses full names because that's what I do!

I am BEYOND excited for Theo's story because I did also really love her! Theo and Olivier is going to be so stinkin' cute and with Violet. I cannot wait! I need it, now.

Diluted Truths is a romantic suspense debut that completely reeled me in from the very first chapter. Journalist Jackie James is fierce, funny, and intellectually curious — the kind of heroine who doesn’t back down when something feels off. So when a mysterious disappearance in her hometown points to something much darker — a centuries-old group known as the Cult of Creatio she dives headfirst into uncovering connections no one else dares to explore.

Enter William “Will” Bly — brilliant, guarded, and tempting in exactly the ways Jackie’s been warned to avoid. Their dynamic crackles with tension and a slow but unmistakable pull, set against the backdrop of cryptic clues, disappearances, and a mystery that refuses to stay on the surface. Will is the guy who swore he’d never do love, but with Jackie he finds the darkness inside him slowly dissolving, bit by bit — even as he insists he can’t have her.

What makes Diluted Truths stand out isn’t just the intriguing cult mystery — though that plot thread keeps you turning pages — it’s how well the emotional connection between Jackie and Will is woven into every suspenseful beat. They’re both carrying scars, they’re both stubborn, and they both find something in each other that challenges the walls they’ve built. There’s banter, heat, danger, and tenderness — and the balance between suspense and romance keeps this story engaging from start to finish.

If you’re into romantic suspense with mystery at its core, a protagonist who won’t quit, and a connection that grows through both threat and trust, Diluted Truths delivers in a way that will keep you hooked — and hungry for the next chapter of The Advocates series.

Tropes:
romantic suspense • slow burn • mystery & cult intrigue • grumpy x sunshine • age gap • forbidden attraction • found family • dual POV • investigative romance

🔥

This was a very good debut novel and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat! I would say it was more suspense with romantic elements vs. a romantic suspense. I wouldn't say it goes as far as a thriller but it is a novel with a "who done it" kind of vibe.

In this book we meet Will and Jackie. Jackie works as a journalist and discovers a case with a possible cult. She tries to follow some leads but ends up asking for help and meets Will.

They work together trying to resolve the clues they are given but in the meantime they grow closer together. Both of them come from troubled pasts, which leads them to be closed off to love. But as they get further into the case, their feelings grow deeper.

I don't want to give too much away as there are many things that would spoil the story line. But it definitely kept me on my toes and I felt like I was solving the case right along Will and Jackie.

Overall, it was a good debut novel and I would recommend to anyone looking for the tropes below! However, I did feel that at times things were overexplained or repeated. Some parts of the book could be taken out and you could still follow the story. But, I think this author has a lot of potential and I am excited to read her future books!

Read if you like:

“Truth is relative to each individual person. What rings true to one can ring false to another. Journalist Jackie is tasked with writing an article on what happened to a little boy who went missing from his house only to show up days later with no memory of what happened to him. When the case shows connections to a mysterious cult from hundreds of years ago she’s instructed to drop it. However Jackie feels strongly that this mysterious cult may have something to do with why the little boy disappeared. With the help of Dr.William Bly they set out on a hunt to find the connection between these unlikely stories. What Jackie wasn’t expecting was to grow fond of this new found friend who she’s been sworn off from dating. Are the cases connected? Will they be able to remain just friends? I really loved the plot and story line of this book. While reading I felt many emotions from laughing, crying, shocked and happy. This book had some very relatable quotes about mental health that a lot of people could relate to. I thought this novel was super unique on how it combined both romance and mystery/crime genres into one which you don’t see very frequently.I think for me the book was a little repetitive which made it somewhat confusing. There were points when I was reading where I thought my book was out of order and I was reading a prior scene but it was just the same exact scene in a different chapter. I know there is a sequel to this novel in the works but the ending was also a huge cliff hanger that left me with more unanswered questions than answered. I would recommend this novel to anyone 18+ who enjoys thrillers, crime, mystery or romance.

Diluted Truths is a debut book and I’m so happy I got to read it! I went into this book with lots of expectations and I really enjoyed this story. There is a great mix of two genres I love: romance and thriller, which makes the plot captivating and keeps the reader curious from beginning to end! The story begins with a mysterious case in a small town and ends with a suspenseful romance. By the way, i got scared many times while reading. What that heck was that drawings!!!!! 🫣

H.J’s writing is so good and easy to understand, when I noticed I was already on the last page. Also Jackie is an amazing FMC, she’s brave and smart! What about Will? 🥹 He’s certainly husband material, istg! Trust me when I say this man is obsessed with his woman! He’d do everything for her! 😫 They’re perfect for each other.

I have the feeling that I need more of this universe, I’m so excited to know more about all the characters, I cannot wait for the sequel! If you liked the blurb, you should give 𝙙𝙞𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙨 a try and show some love to this lovely indie author! 💙

4.5⭐️ Such an intriguing story. It’s a romantic thriller and has a very unique plot line. Following a crime journalist’s case looking into some suspicious disappearances, and what seems to be a relatively mysterious cult behind it all. Jackie’s journey to uncover the truth behind this cult leads her to discoveries about herself and her family that she was not expecting. This cult is quite unique, and still very much a mystery by the end of the book. This author has done a phenomenal job at only revealing things as they come, and very little clues along the way for you to “guess the ending” prematurely. I truly have no idea where this story will go from here, but I’m super excited to find out. I also COMPLETELY fell in love with Will and his fierce passion & protectiveness for Jackie. Their shared trauma created a natural and instant connection, palpable yummy tension, and such a sweet confession of love between the two of them. Really loved their romantic part of the story. Onto book 2….

There are a number of things I liked about this book, the first was undoubtedly was the thrill.

I was kinda stupid to start this book at night and by the time I reached the thriller parts, I was so scared. I felt the things happening around me, the writing was that good!

The next thing, I liked was how impactful the side characters were. The book included a wide range characters with unique personalities and their friendship was so special.

This book will keep you on the edge of your chair all the time, like every chapter, every page, every moment.

Will and Jackie, their love story is so cute. Although, they were instantly attracted to eachother, their relationship was so much more than just physical attraction.

The emotional build up was really good!

However, me being a sucker for slow burn romance, this book would have been a solid 5 star for me if the slowburn was more for the love story than mystery.

Diluted Truths is book one in The Advocates series and I’m mad at myself for discovering it this early because now I need to wait to know what’s going to happen with the James siblings!

I had the pleasure of being given an arc copy of book two, following fortunes, and I can’t wait to start that one to see what’s up with Theo and Oliver (he’s so freaking cute, too? I love him so much) As it often happens with series, I’m convinced book two will be even better than this one <3

The novel is a perfect mix between romance and mystery, with it getting really creepy at some points, too (Griffin is going to give me nightmares for days) and I’m OBSESSED with Will and Jackie and I can’t wait to see them again!!!!

Talk about a PSYCHOLOGICAL thriller! Wow, I was in suspense just about this entire book, knowing that something was going to happen but having no real idea what it could be. And when it finally did happen, it was so shocking and disorienting, as if I was experiencing it myself. But I don't even fully know what IT is!!! I have so many questions, I am just begging to be answered in the next book. To say I'm hooked on this series would be an understatement. It is such a unique story and it kept me on the edge of my seat and questioning everything. Oh and we love Will and Jackie. Super sweet and HOT 🔥

I was shocked by how much I enjoyed reading this book! It is the first book in a series of 4 about the James Siblings.

Jackie is the youngest of the James siblings. She is the light for everyone around her while she shoves her darkness deep, hoping to keep it locked away. While on an assignment as a journalist, she discovers a cult that could possible be involved. Jackie tries to untangle the mystery while getting plunged deeper and deeper into it.

This book had SO many twists. I was shocked by majority of them. I applaud the author for having such creativity, the reader couldn’t see what was coming next.

We’re all a little obsessed with cults—just admit it. Diluted Truths hooks you with the mystery of the Cult of Creatio, but it’s Jackie and Will’s messy, magnetic connection that keeps you turning pages. Both haunted by their pasts, neither willing to let it define their future. Suspense? Check. Romance? Check. Emotional damage? Oh, absolutely.

This book was yet another that I couldn't put down until I got some answers. Another late night, zero regrets! Now, time to get book two in my hands...

Great start for a series!

I had no idea what to expect but I really enjoyed this. The cult plot and mystery kept me hooked. I can’t wait to find out more.

The romance plot was cute. I found both MCs to be very likeable. It did seem like they fell pretty fast but I was okay with that.

It did feel a bit repetitive at times but overall I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next one!

I can’t wait to see how this series turns out! I was hooked from very early on. H. J. Cartwright somehow combined thriller and romance perfectly in this captivating story. When I first read the word “cult”, I was skeptical. I ended up being so excited to read more the entire time. The characters, the foreshadowing, the plot, the detailed history, it was all top notch. Ahh! This is such a good book. It’s captivating with a tense mystery woven throughout. The characters are interesting, well developed, and the banter between Jackie and Will 🥰 is so fun.

Jackie is tenacious with an extremely difficult, traumatic past. There is so much trauma that resides beneath her strong and humorous surface. She is smart and seeks truth in all matters. This leads to her researching a cult, the Cult Creatio.

Her research quickly brings Will, a professor, into her world. His past is also filled with darkness. A darkness that he believes should cause him to keep Jackie at arms length, no matter how much he desires her.

Their work will take them across state lines and the country, and invade their lives in an unexpected and unwelcomed manner. But it also will draw them together in profoundly healing ways ❤️

Great mystery, great 💖 love story. Read this book 📖!

This couple is inevitable. Our guy Will never stood a chance against the force of nature that is Jackie. The introduction to the cult, realizing how much bigger their problem is than they realized, and wanting answers made this one a wild ride for the first book…
