Caring for the items you love around the home is easier - and more rewarding - than you think. In his first book, The Repair Shop's resident woodworking expert Will Kirk takes you on an inspirational tour of the elements of wood care and restoration, from basic principles and quick fixes around the home to larger projects. Restore shows you how simple and joyful woodworking can be, from fixing knicks and stains and making small repairs, to household items you can use to help care for your furniture and other wooden objects.
Restore teaches us how to save pieces of furniture from the scrap heap and appreciate the craftsmanship behind the objects we use every day. Encouraging us all to slow down and appreciate the beauty of woodcraft through accessible projects - which anyone can start working on at home!
This book is mainly photo-driven, but full of useful information and advice on how to care for and restore wooden furniture. There are chapters on basic cleaning, quick fixes, and the various types of finishes that can be used. Three restoration projects are explained with lots of photos, and there is a chapter at the end on some of the tools you should consider having. Overall, quite a helpful book, aimed at beginners interested in furniture restoration, although the odd typo annoys me!
The background story and project tips are great. The photos are beautiful but there are too many of Will looking lovingly at some patina. Either a shorter book or more projects or info on old furniture and wood types would have been interesting to read about and see. As a novice I do intend to try out some tips from the book. I heard Will at the book launch and thought he came across well in person and on paper.
