Created from the Wizard’s Stone, the Gargoyle Masters can turn from human to stone warriors in the blink of an eye, but they are lovers as well as fighters.
Orestes tries to stay away from humans. He doesn’t appreciate the hero worship or overzealous women. But one night of spying the new kitchen help has him rethinking his desire to not speak to human women. Astrid wants to keep her head down and do her job in the hopes of being fed rather than beat. Her life is turned upside down once Master Orestes realizes how she’s been treated. But trusting him to care for her will take every ounce of her ability to forgive and forget.
Master Nel has been captured, when gargoyles are used to being the ultimate strength in the realm. It will take the help of an unlikely heroine to free him and learn who is behind this betrayal. Phaidra is used to being ignored. The unrelenting attention of a Gargoyle Master is almost more than she can bear. Turning a blind eye to his captivity is not an option, especially when the one betraying him should be one of his strongest supporters.
I'm a Texas native who loves to read and write Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Fantasy Romance, and Contemporary Erotic Romance. When not reading or writing I'm an avid photographer.
I've been taking periodic notes of my thoughts whilst reading this and it appears that this book is everything I loathe in romance and it's sub-genres.
There's two "romances" in this Fantasy Romance story for the price of one, but the characters are completely interchangeable. Both female characters are scared, submissive women who live in a cloud of naivety and innocence. Both male characters are assertive, dominant warrior hunks who stand head and shoulders above all other lifeforms and must "protect the little women" at all cost.
The "romance" is deeply creepy and both "relationships" start with the very definition of sexual assault. Orestes "rescues" Astrid from a whipping and proceeds to first lock her in his room and then feel her up in the bath after insisting he share it with her. He takes the fact that she doesn't say no as a full out invitation for sex, but the fact is she's never going to say no because he's an all powerful magical construct who could crush her like a bug if angered and he's literally her master since she's a poor kitchen servant whose very life is in his hands. She's scared and for all she knows if she said no (not that she does, because this is "romance") he'd kick her out of the castle and she'd lose both her job and her home and be left to fend for herself with absolutely nothing. He very literally has all the power and this relationship is inherently unequal, but that's never touched on because it'd break the "Cindrella" type fantasy. She even tells herself not to be jealous that he's a huge player (he frequently goes to Keva to have sex with the Amazonian like warrior women there, but he finds it unsatisfying because apparently he doesn't like women to know what they want in bed or to be on top) and not to be upset when he inevitably gets bored and casts her aside. As a reward he dresses her in hugely impractical silk dresses and fancy shoes, gives her a few compliments about how pretty she is, and lets her dust the library (because she wants to learn to read) instead of slaving away in the kitchens. Nice.
The second "romance" between Nel and Phaidra really begins after she helps him escape from (the sexual assault) of her House leaders. The first thing that happens on arriving at the castle is that Phaidra passes out from exhaustion and Nel takes her up to his(?) room, strips her naked and then proceeds to give her a sponge bath. All without her consent. They are not in a relationship, they have not even discussed being attracted to each other (though being a Fantasy Romance they naturally are. Of course), he has no reason to believe she'd welcome this and she's quite capable of washing herself if she so wanted after she wakes up. Still, he washes her up to and including her "most sensitive parts", illiciting a moan from her sleeping form that makes him want to run his lips all over her body, but he doesn't because "No way would he touch her so intimately without her consent". Err, what?! Does he not think fondling her in her sleep without her consent already a gross violation? He's already being pretty bloody "intimate" with her but his line in the sand is apparently not taking steps that may lead to him getting carried away and just out and out raping her. Classy, real classy. He then finishes this off by stripping and climbing in to bed with her. Again, Nel has all the power here. Phaidra has given up her entire life and country to help Nel escape and she followed him to his home because she didn't really have any other choice. She knows absolutely no one else, she has nowhere else to go (doesn't even know where anywhere else is in fact) and she has nothing with her. She's scared and she can never go back to her home country (Keva) because she betrayed her House (in her matriarchal society loyalty to the House comes before everything no matter what) and would be facing a probable death sentence since punishment would be meted out by her House Leader (who'd obviously be pretty pissed off that her plan had been foiled and she'd also be being punished for her actions).
The fact that this is a pretty ordinary set up in romance is what disgusts me. It's perpetuating the idea that sexual assault is romantic and that getting fondled in your sleep without your consent is somehow desirable. This entire book is helping to shore up rape culture by depicting weak women being put in potentially dangerous and unwanted situations by much stronger men as the right and natural way the world should work. As long as the men are getting what they want and the women aren't being beaten and are dressed prettily then everything is just great. It's not.
I can't even be bothered to discuss the plot of this book because it's a paper thin veneer that only exists as a device for getting these characters together with their "soul mates". The only thing that it does "right" is that the male characters aren't alpha-jerks, despite their horrendous actions they do seem to genuinely care for the female characters, but it's still in a way that reinforces the idea the women are precious possessions to be protected (even from themselves) and not as thinking, feeling human beings.
This entire book makes me amazingly angry and absolutely disgusted and I do not recommend it for anyone.

Orestes is a protector of the realm and he’s content to leave the humans to their idol worship until one small human calls to him like no human before in this hypnotic paranormal romance. To add even more spice to the story, there are unexpected twists, another romance brewing and Orestes and Astrid get the surprise of a lifetime while the setting is the perfect ambiance for this story of gargoyles and wizards. The author has created a fascinating realm with some very sexy protectors and the story had me enthralled from the very beginning and I can’t wait to read the next one.
I loved this book. Some of the reviews had me unsure of whether to read it or not, but I was so interested in the blub that I thought I'd give it a chance. It was really good and I'm glad it followed two couples at once. The gargoyle men were so protective and sweet and the story line was full of action. I really hope there will be more books and it turns into a series! I will definitely be looking for more from this author.
The writing is good- the story line is good and although Romance is not my thing (there is plenty of hot gargoyle sex in here), this story has the makings of excellent hi-fantasy if Missy decides to do some serious world building. It was interesting enough and paced well so I did enjoy it, except for feeling sexually inadequate, post rock hard gargoyles having their way with human women. I hope she does! She has earned my read of book 2. For the ladies? Yeah, it will get 5 stars.
Warning this is a slightly sarcastic review as this one annoyed me enough to put it in there. However, you will see I gave it three stars. It wasn't bad just had a lot of romance annoyances. It was ok overall just not for me.
I don't understand the premise for the book. You have these gargoyle hero's created by wizards as adults, fully functional etc to protect humanity but did not realize their servants were being whipped, treated like slaves and not fed for decades? Huh? That just makes them look inept IE they are shitty hero's if they don't even take the time to notice someone is starving next to them. What do they do all day? Oh wait never mind probably having sex with the warrior girls next door. The storyline had some promise it just didn't quite follow through to me.
One of my all time hated romance annoyances was constantly shoved in my face over and over and over. Multiple OW of the H. I am pretty sure almost every female introduced in the book we get one of the gargoyle H's inner monologue this is my former lover so and so. I honestly did not even see how either one was a hero or what his job was. I just got that he was a big old man whore. I think those pages would have been better spent in the beginning of a series explaining the origin of the gargoyles and why they are hero's. BTW this book has two different romances in it so we have two H's and two h's. They are pretty damn interchangeable.
First H, manwhore gargoyle warrior. First h, slave, underfed, beaten, bad sex. Second H, manwhore gargoyle warrior. Second h, 5th tier out of a 7 tier house(a step above a slave), virgin, underfed but don't worry SHE WASN'T BEATEN!
OK I get it you are an amazing warrior gargoyle (insert interchangeable H here) that got it up for every damn chick you went to see in the other land with warrior women but after the 5th mention of these women I don't even know why you are with the scarred up, malnourished slave/5tier (insert manwhore with virgin/bad sexed up h here).
Enough that you even thought about the OW during the BEST SEX OF YOUR LIFE. Are you sure? Because I remember the best sex of MY life and the only thing I can remember thinking is OMFG *clenching sheets* . Authors this does not make me think that the H is really into the h. If he is coherent enough to think about anyone else during the BEST sex of his life.. HE JUST ISN'T THAT INTO YOU.... That's like making a h sit there making lists of chores, moaning loudly and saying she never had a better orgasm.. That's sad, so sad. It makes my heart hurt for that character or my loins either one.
Maybe it's because I don't have a penis. If I did I guess I would take the time to think about all the tits and ass I have seen during sex and say to myself nahhh you just don't do it for me anymore it's all about this person (h) (but don't worry ladies my dick will be ready for you to climb on soon because it wont last long) but for now lets get our hump on you enthrall me!
Oh and to top it off the H acts all possessive, is all about MINE but knows that he loses interest early so sooner or later he will cut the chick (h) loose but while he has her, SHE IS HIS. The power between this couple is so off balance it made me cringe. He thinks to himself he is lucky to have her but it won't last long. She thinks the same thing but knows he won't be interested long and this kept up most of the book. The I love you was at the end and I just didn't feel it.
Basically I felt like I had mental whiplash during the whole book. He was possessive but not for long, loving , hero but actually no not really cause he can't even see his own people suffering. See where I am coming from here?!?!?! A whole bunch of telling me the H is one thing but a crap ton of him doing or thinking something entirely different.
The book got 3 stars because I do think it was a good story and could have been great with more world building instead of so much emphasis on the what I felt was mediocre romance. I can see why it worked for people I am just not one of them and won't be continuing with the series. I just don't think the author's writing style is for me.
IM JUST GOING TO TREAT THIS AS A NOVELLA BECAUSE THERE ARE 2 LOVE STORIES GOING ON INSIDE. IT WAS ALSO EXTREMELY SUPERFICIAL YET ENJOYABLE.
FIRST COUPLE - HERO is one of the Gargoyle Guardians who saves our heroine from a whipping. She works as the serving maids. Something about her calls to him, and he baths her and makes love to her. A reviewer pointed out how unrealistic that situation was... because it was seriously crazy if you think about it. But in the context of a medieval era, the man with the power can get to do anything he wants or likes, even bedding a female in his house. So frankly that didn't bother me at all.
SECOND COUPLE held more intrigue though short-lived. Nel was held prisoner in the alien equivalent of an Amazonian tribe and the heroine happens to be the one bringing him food and water. Not long she helps him escape and she goes back to his homeland with him.
OVERALL this was short and cute but held nothing meaningful.
This is not a typical read for me but I loved it! I came across this book and its author whilst browsing and I'm so glad I did I loved the storyline and the characters. There is so much potential for the books to come and I can't wait!!!
An interesting gargoyle fantasy story. With this you get a two for one romance. I found the hero/s and heroine/s like-able and the supporting characters interesting. There are wizards and other fantasy elements which I enjoy. There are some mysteries surrounding the gargoyles and I'm hoping to learn more with the next book in the series. Some steamy sex scenes but they are not particularly numerous.
I read the summary and thought " surely, it couldn't be that simple". apparently, it could. the book doesn't feel like a whole book at all and has a very simple plot with very disturbing relationships. I skimmed it in the hopes that it would get better but nope.
Thank you for writing a novel where the 'heroes' weren't mean, nasty, etc. towards the women after they had sex with them. (So many novels are written that way).
Speaking of sex, I wish there was more romance before characters had sex in romance novels. That's the best part of a relationship. Otherwise they're just having sex - not making love. They're just going through the motions. It reads like something a guy would be interested in - porn in book form.
All the women I know would rather read about people falling in love.
This book gave me everything: angst, passion, magic, and redemption. The idea of warriors made of stone who are capable of such intense love is captivating. Orestes won me over slowly, and Astrid’s journey from fear to trust was handled with so much care. Phaidra’s bravery in standing up for Nel gave me chills-such an emotional payoff. This isn’t just a romance-it’s about healing, loyalty, and the strength to rise above your past.
Fascinating but a little flatter than I had hoped--and with a bit more sex.
Motif: Strong, hard, courageous men falling for vulnerable, sweet, non-warrior women (timid but not without a measure of strength, courage, endurance). Happens in similar fashion with both pair of lovers...
There may have been a kidnapping, an attempted overthrow of the kingdom, an ambush, and a betrayal involved--but those seemed rather anti-climactic compared to the men persuading their women that they can be trusted. [Romance first, adventure second]
I guess part of the problem is I like warrior women better--ones who have a bit of fight & spunk and don't meekly (quietly, timidly, reluctantly) accept people (even very good man-->husband) totally overturning their lives... And I'm a bit skeptical of love at first sight, esp. if it's instantaneous & mutual!
Kate Daniels (by Ilona Andrews) is much more my speed. If it's yours too, give this one a pass.
Kind of want to read the next book though... wasn't quite expecting that...
This novel felt like a throwback to the paranormal romances I read as a teen in the 90s- where men are superhuman and women are meek and inexperienced. Another throwback was the dubious consent of the main heroine- can a servant who had been starved, beaten, and terrorized for weeks really consent to sex with an overlord who wants to take care of her? (He's not the one who was beating her, BTW.)
I guess I'm used to reading stories where the heroines have some agency, and aren't waiting for their men to save them, introduce them to sexual pleasure, impregnate them, or give them jobs to occupy themselves when the men are away saving everybody.
3.5 stars. I basically liked the premise of this book and the storyline wasn't bad but it was not detailed enough. Not enough character development and the story went quickly with not enough detail. I don't know if I will read the next book in the series. I may give it a chance hoping for a better written story because I didn't hate this but I certainly am not going to run out to get the next book. Sometimes I'm desperate for something to read, or just in the mood for light paranormal romance and that is when I may get the next book, if the price is right.
interestingly different. shortish, approx 2 hours reading time. one thing I noticed was that there was very little back story to the Gargoyles, other than why they were created. I'd have liked some more. also, it's a two-for-one tale. you get the stories of 2 gargoyles although I suspect that Nel's tale might bleed over into further books. 3.5 stars, but I'll certainly read any future books. I'm interested in following up, not just the Gargoyles, but Albain too
Too short but strangely captivating in spite of its shortcomings (the characters are not properly introduced or explained and major events seem to happen in the blink of an eye). Not an unpleasant read though, if paranormal romance light tickles your fancy.
I loved everything about this book the characters the action plot and drama I'm just waiting on book 2 in this great series. Missy Jane is a great writer and very creative. The story has a great flow and it doesn't leave you guessing..
Not a terrible book, but not great. Fast, mindless read. Would be curious about reading more books in the series to see if the world building gets better.
An excellent paranormal romance with hot hot hot bits. This was a wonderful read that I couldn't put down. I can't wait to read the next one in this series
