"The Divided" by Amy Bartol (Premonition Series. 'Under Different Stars')
Merciful Aliens! Never before having read one of Bartol's books, I wasn't sure what to expect. Instantly I was enamored with her storyline and what was going on with Violet. Violet is obviously troubled by the death of her finance but is no way prepared for what she finds proceeding his death. The story is genius and one of a kind. I wholeheartedly loved it!! Only problem I had was the story ended. :(
"Monsters of Earth" by Tammy Blackwell (Timberwolves Series)
Another author I've yet to read and this one was so very sad and sweet at the same time. It is extremely short and it seems to be an opener for a longer book. I enjoyed it but wished for a little more story and not quite such an abrupt ending. Still, all in all, it was a good read.
"The House on Maple Street" by Amanda Havard (The Survivors Series and Immersedition)
An epic Alien tale that it the spot. I was intrigued from the start and pleasantly surprised with the ending. Harvard spins a story that has you hanging on to every word, aching to know what is going to happen next. You may mysteriously have a hankering to up and visit a Dairy Queen when all is said and done. Don't fight this urge....
"The Force" by Heather Hildenbrand (The Dirty Blood Series. The Imitation Series)
Think The Hangover meets Aliens. I enjoyed following Alex and his friend as they set out in search of a fellow alien that goes missing while partying it up on Spring Break. I did however dislike the ending. Not enough to hate the story. Oh no. I just would have liked a different ending. Unless of course Hildenbrand is planning to revisit this story and continue it on as a series. *COUGH* hint hint *COUGH* Still a fun read and very entertaining.
"Ultra-Con" by Tiffany King (The Saving Angels Series. 'Miss Me Not.' 'No Attachments.' It is just a Scifi convention...what could possibly go wrong? Answer: absolutely everything. Aliens, host body’s, lethal alien virus ready to take out entire worlds in one fell swoop...just to name a few. King gives us a fun yet terrifying story that leaves you guessing throughout the whole story. Alien lovers rejoice! This is a story made just for you.
"Snow Globe" by C.A. Kunz (The Childe Series. 'The Modified.' 'One Tiny Secret.' 'Lucky Number Four' {as Amanda Jason})
One word for this story and that is adorable! What would you do if you happened upon a gorgeous alien who crashed his spacecraft in your back yard? The mother and son duo bring us a cute, quick read that will leave you smiling in the end. I definitely wouldn't hate on them if they were to give us more of Andi and Kyle.
"The Black Stone Heir" by Sarah M. Ross (The Patronus Series. 'Inhale Exhale.')
A fantastic story about aliens and falling in love. They go hand in hand right? Most definitely they do. Especially when Ross is writing the story. The story was short, sweet and majorly intense. Not knowing what would happen next was what propelled me to read and on and find out its answer. I loved the story and adored the romance. Another great read from a great author!
"The Ascendant" by Raine Thomas (Daughters of Saraquel Trilogy. Firstborn Trilogy. 'Meant for Her.' 'For Everly.')
Hooked! Absolutely hooked. Just a few pages in and I came to one conclusion: I. Need. More. The storyline is catchy and the characters are ones I have to know more about. So glad I was given the chance to read another amazing story by Thomas. Cannot wait to see how this story unfolds.
This is an awesome Alien Collection of 8 Short Stories from this Take Me To Your Reader An Otherworld Anthology. This book was so perfect for my blogs August Alien Invasion Month! This Anthology summed up UtopYA 2014 perfectly, and it was so great meeting all these amazing authors!`
The Divided by Amy Bartol - 5 Stars
Great short story! I hope Amy does more with this story line, and does either a prequel on Matt and how he came into his position as a leader, how him and Vi meet each other, and why he risked so much to be with her. I would also like a story after this one to continue the plot on May and if she will seek revenge and who she will get to help her, or on Clyde and the loss of his position and what he would do to fight to gain his life back and power. This story was amazing and has so much potential to go so many places and I really hope Amy decides to take us on those journeys with her!
Monsters of Earth by Tammy Blackwell - 4 Stars
Very short story but very well written. This story had a great message about humans and the reality of the many diseases we all are affected by and how they cut life short and how research and technology and training, maybe could save some.
The House on Maple Street by Amanda Havard - 3 Stars
A fun short story! This story had the feel of the Stepford Wives or Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I saw where this story was going it just didn't have enough development for me. I wish it had more detail, action, and less telling me what was going on in the story. It had a great concept and I loved the characters.
The Force by Heather Hildenbrand - 4 Stars
This was a great story of learning the power and draw of why you would leave everything you know behind. It starts with 3 Alien males going on what they consider to be a spring break, to another planet. They choose Earth. Two of them wake up and can't remember anything from the night before and can't find third. They need to find their friend before they are to return home. They have to remember some details from the night before in order to find their friend. This was a crazy, fun story that reminded me of the hangover.
Ultra-Con by Tiffany King - 5 Stars
Loved this story! Fun, full of action, and some romance too! I didn't see the twist in where the story was going to go, which was a nice surprise. It started out with Ultra-Con and a stranger is staring at the girls. Then things get real interesting, fast!
Snow Globe by C.A. Kunz - 5 Stars
Duty or what your heart wants, which would you choose? This is the choice that one of the main characters is faced with. This short story was one of my favorites and was so great, I loved this romantic sweet story!!! It made me so happy and swoon!
The Black Stone Heir by Sarah M. Ross - 5 Stars
Krissy and Tate had great chemistry, and I loved that we got POVs from both of them! They both like each other but never know the right thing to say and always manage to mess it up, but that still doesn't deter their attraction. All through this adventure they protect their secret and each other. This story was really well written, and I really loved it!
The Ascendant by Raine Thomas - 5 Stars
I want more of this very interesting, intriguing story! An average girl who is at a party and hears girls in a bathroom saying that she has been asked there by a boy as an ugly girl and a joke. She gets upset leaves and gets caught in the rain when she sees a stranger and crashes her car. This awesome, sexy adventure starts from then. She is not who she thinks.
Take Me To Your Reader is an anthology put together in honor of the 2014 UtopYA convention. The theme of the convention and the anthology being aliens and outerspace. I read this before my trip and I’m glad I did, because I found new authors just in time to have a chat with them and download a few of their books onto my kindle.
The Divided – Amy Bartol
This was really interesting! I loved the unique feel of the aliens involved and how there was an easy to understand complexity to their nature. It’s definitely one of those stories you wish had a series to go along with it. I did have a bit of trouble taking the proper nouns seriously though. This is also the longest story in the book.
Monsters of Earth – Tammy Blackwell
This one took a more contemporary feel while maintaining the alien theme. It’s actually incredibly sad and heartwarming, but it’s also rather short. I liked the idea of the ‘alien’ species traveling to other worlds to help eradicate monsters, whatever they might be.
The House on Maple Street – Amanda Havard
The House on Maple Street is an incredibly fun story with bizarre aliens and a brainwashed town. While I wasn’t fond of one of the side characters I found myself enjoying every bit of this one. It also had me craving hot fudge sundaes and Blizzards from DQ.
The Force – Heather Hildenbrand
The Force is part sci-fi coming of age and part Hangover! A group of guys (aliens of course) come to Earth for a week and after a wild night they find themselves in quite the mess with only hours before they their shuttle arrives. It’s a really fun story with a touch of cute romance.
Ultra-Con – Tiffany King
This is probably my least favorite of the bunch. I didn’t really connect with the main character, which is unfortunate since the whole thing takes place at a geeky convention. It’s like Body Snatchers meet Comic Con, and while it was a fun read I just didn’t find myself too interested in it.
Snow Globe – C.A. Kunz
I loved this one! It’s a really sweet and heartwarming read, that made me smile.
The Black Stone Heir – Sarah M. Ross
This was another really interesting one. There was a lot of cool ideas packed into a short story and I really wish there had been more. I loved the aliens and the dual POVs. I definitely want to read more from this author.
The Ascendant by Raine Thomas
This one sort of confused me a bit. I wanted to understand the “whys” and “hows” more but with the story being so short I never got that chance. The whole premise of the story is really awesome, but I wanted to know more about the main character and her guardian.
Overall it was a great collection that really put me in the mood for an equally great convention! I definitely recommend grabbing this one if you get the chance.
I got the book because of Amy Bartol and her story was awesome as expected! I loved the story by Raine Thomas as well and I gave the book 4 stars because of these 2 stories otherwise the other stories are kind of forgettable and it would have only gotten 3 stars :/
And I loved Loved LOVED this book. I really enjoyed this book as a whole and I can see myself reading its stories again and again. I will definitely be looking up some of the authors other works.
As there is eight stories I’m only going to write brief comments on each one.
"The Divided" by Amy Bartol I wanted this story to keep going. I could read a whole novel about Vi, Mattie, So-wah and Clyde, in fact I’d really like to. In this brief snapshot of the characters’ lives we get intergalactic romance, revenge, action and a glimpse at what could be a much bigger story. You immediately feel for Violet; she’s a young woman with her whole life ahead of her but then her Violet finance is murdered and what follows his death introduces her to a whole other world. Five Stars out of Five.
"Monsters of Earth" by Tammy Blackwell At the start you think you’re going to get some light-hearted monster slaying romp, but what you end up getting in this very short story is a lot of emotion and a monster that you really hope Helem can defeat. Four Stars out of Five.
"The House on Maple Street" by Amanda Havard This was a nice light hearted boy finds aliens, boy outwits aliens and makes a new friend tail. You get nasty aliens, friendship, action and an average guy as the hero. I also think I would enjoy this story longer as well, maybe the aliens come back for revenge huh? I really enjoyed the Fenton and Travis dynamic, I think they could have some rather good adventures together. Four Stars out of Five.
"The Force" by Heather Hildenbrand I started reading this story and thought to myself this is sounding very much like that hangover movie but with teenage aliens instead of middle aged men. It got better as it went on and turned out to be about more than just waking up with a mate missing and not remembering what happened the night before. It’s not a bad story but the ending was a letdown for me, I would have liked the romance to build more between Axel and Becca and maybe even see him smuggling her back to his home land (but that’s just my personal taste) still a fun and entertaining read. Three Stars out of Five.
"Ultra-Con" by Tiffany King Ahh having your body taken over by an alien force was one of my recurring nightmares as a child. We get good aliens, bad aliens, action, danger and humans caught in-between it all. The story built nicely but then the final standoff seemed too rushed for my taste. Three stars out of Five.
"Snow Globe" by C.A. Kunz I would have liked it to keep going, I want to know how Kyle goes fitting in on earth. A nice sweet little story about an alien boy finding happiness thanks to a human girl that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy. Four stars out of Five.
"The Black Stone Heir" by Sarah M. Ross This was a lovely well rounded story. We had action, adventure and romance. I really liked how the narration kept changing between the main two characters. It’s a loved each other from affair, unknowingly, and then coming together – Aww my favourite kind of love story. Four Stars out of Five
"The Ascendant" by Raine Thomas I NEED More!!!!!! Wow loved it. In this short story we get action, bad aliens and forbidden romance. I want a whole series of Kyr learning her lessons, coming across Ty each time and then finally how they continue their relationship once she takes on her destined responsibilities! Please give me more to read! Five Stars out of Five.
Oh man I have the biggest book hangover ever. I’m going back to the beginning and reading them all again. Bye now!
This collection of stories is sooo good. Love these authors. Got to read some authors I hdn't tried yet and found some new stories to love. After I would read a story from a new author, I would stop the book to see what else they had written. To be impressed from a collection of short stories to try new authors is a joy to both the reader and the author. I did originally buy this book just for Amy Bartol, but I feel in love with some new authors and their characters, such as Raine Thomas, Sarah Ross, and Tammy Blackwell.
Only bought this for the last story in the book by Raine Thomas (as it was the prequel to her new books) and I was unable to get it any other way. It was really good and got me super excited for her series, but it seemed rather short. Although it was a prequel and combined in a book with a large number of other stories so I shouldn't be too surprised, and I bought book 1 and 2 shortly after reading this one so it wasn't too bad. As I haven't read any of the other stories, do not take it to mean that they get five stars, it is only for Raine Thomas' book.
3-1/2 Stars. This is a book of short sci-fi stories. What I like is that it's a compilation of 8 different authors, so you get a sampling of each writer's style, which is great because I was curious about some of them. I thought that there were a few really good shorts, but some I really didn't care for. A couple were cliff-hangers which eh, imo was kind of sucky because as far as I know, there's no intention to continue any of these stories, so I was left with the feeling like I read half a story and the book was snatched away.
I only read Monsters of Earth by Tammy Blackwell, so I don't want to rate the whole anthology, but I really enjoyed that short that I did read! It is very very short, but had me crying by the end anyway. I am now desperately hoping that Miss Tammy will be writing a longer story set in the same universe since the hints that we got were so intriguing. The quality of the copy I read was flawless and highly recommended!
Some of my favorite authors wrote these stories. I liked some more than others, but they were all great. Each story is unique and well written. Many of their stories left me wanting more. I can hope that some of the authors make a new series out of them. That would be incredible.
It helped me discover a couple of new authors, but there wasn't any one story that completely grabbed my attention. I got it because of Amy Bartol and hers was my favorite short story.
The Divided by Amy Bartol was FANTASTIC. I'll be reading the other stories in this anthology ASAP, but I'm absolutely in love with this one! I cried, I swooned, I'm dying for more. Love her.
