There are so many facets to understanding the world of dogs, and this beautifully illustrated book does a great job at mentioning many of them. It's a large format picture book, but each page is packed with so much information that it's a good choice for older students who want to dip in and out of a book and find fun facts about dogs.

Different breeds are mentioned, and one of the really interesting things to me was that Sorosiak's own dog is an American dingo, and she wasn't quite sure what that was, which prompted her to delve more deeply into canine research. A lot of facets of dog behavior are covered, and there are snippets of stories sprinkled through the pages which make the book even more engaging. Dog anatomy is not ignored, we see different jobs for dogs, and even dogs in history and art.

While this has a glossary and index, there is not list of resources that were consulted. Considering how many fantastic middle grade books about dogs are out there, I would be very interested in seeing what books Sorosiak used for her research.

Uribe's illustrations are fantastic, and the page design lends itself to lots of information being presented. There are colored text boxes with fun facts, and even the background illustrations are interesting. There is an effort to make the people presented in the book very diverse, which is a great thing to see. The print is on the smaller side, but there's always good color contrast; no orange print on white background, which I find difficult to read. The illustration style is somehow warm and cozy, which is just perfect for a book about our canine companions! This had a very European feel to the design that I have come to expect from Albatros Publishing, and I wasn't surprised to find that Nosy Crow had put this out.

There are a huge number of nonfiction books about dogs, but most have a more narrow focus. Kidd and Braunigan's Pet That Dog: A Handbook for Making Four-Legged Friends discusses how to interact with dogs, Horowitz's Our Dogs, Our Selves is about dog behavior, Evans and Heaton's Atlas of Dogs maps out the history and origins of breeds, Hamilton's Daring Dogs amuses us with stories of famous dogs, and Wheeler-Toppen's Dog Science Unleashed: Fun Activities to Do with Your Canine Companion's title tells us all we need to know. Albee's Dog Days is similar to this title, in that it is more of an inclusive overview. If I had to buy just one book for a young dog enthusiast, I might choose this one, since there are so many topics offered. It will become a very well-used volume, so I would make sure to put a sturdy protective cover on it, because it will no doubt be dragged along on many outings!

As is the norm for largely picture books, I flipped through this initially just to get a feel of it from the illustrations. They were delightful, humorous even. I particularly liked one of the ones used on an early title page (not the cover) that shows a massive dog stretched out across more than 2/3 of a couch with its human looking small on the other end. That one is explained in the narrative, btw, which notes that the dog and its siblings went through, uh, several couches. Another that popped up not long after that shows three dogs in a row that seem to be, uh, using their noses. Dog owners will get my drift. In other words, though, these illustrations set the mood for the book which is largely upbeat and jam packed with snippets about this or that dog and their history and characteristics.

While I was expecting more of a story mode than is here, the juxtaposition of illustrations and info works well. It's concise and keeps your eyes moving across the page. While much of the info is factual, ie the origins of dogs and how they evolved over time giving the reader a look at how long dogs have been a part of not just we humans' lives but the earth. It notes that while the first "modern" dog appeared some 40,000 years ago, the canine family tree goes back much, much further. Did you know there's an Egyptian tomb painting that shows a man walking his dog? I need to remind my Daisy of that regal bit of info when we go out again tomorrow. Collars have been found with names like Brave One and North Wind, too, so they were definitely individuals to the humans involved.

In any case, I won't try to detail the narrative. It's someone at one time succinct and right-to-the-point while also managing to cover a wide variety of dog related topics, from their amazing noses to body language (and how they seem to read ours, too). As an Alaskan who has not only ridden behind a team of sled dogs but once owned a retired racing sled dog, I was glad to see these northern bred dogs get a nod in the book, I will note, however. And, oh, a teaser....check out the section on what seems to have been the legendary King Arthur's legendary dog, Cavall. Readers will enjoy the book, I believe, and appreciate the glossary and index of breeds mentioned at the end. Thanks #NetGalley and #NosyCrowInc for allowing me a sneak peek at this quite comprehensive book. Having my own furry friend beside me as I read made it even more special.

For families looking for more than just a manual on dog rearing, this delightful compendium of facts and stories is The author begins with her curiosity about her own pup, and goes on to explore many topics – the evolution of dogs, differences between breeds, doggy senses and anatomy, how to read their tails, ears, and sounds, and much more. I really like the format: each chapter comprises a two-page spread of this large format book, with background, inset illustrations and accompanying text discussing various aspects of the subject. For instance, in the chapter “Going to Extremes,” there’s a graph with pictures of seven dogs, from a 5-8″ Chihuahua to a 30-32″ Irish wolfhound, and information relating size to life span. There’s a story about the biggest Great Dane ever measured (40.5″), how fast sight dogs can run (44+ mph), which dogs are thought to be the most intelligent, and brief bios of a couple of fantastically old dogs.

The information is presented in a nicely conversational style which is engaging and factual without being overbearing. The appealing and affectionate artwork is detailed enough to show breed differences and dog age, while capturing the personality of individual dogs. There’s also a nice representation of diversity in the humans. I especially enjoyed the three pages of dog breeds on the front and back endpapers. The book has a table of contents, an index of breeds and a glossary of terms. I can imagine reading a chapter or two aloud at bedtime to dog-loving or curious kids, and older readers will enjoy looking up their favorite breeds and topics, from history to behavior.

I only wish their were a list of sources. A few facts needed backup, in my mind. Which study concluded that dogs prefer reggae and soft rock? And how did scientists determine that dogs align their bodies to earth’s north-south or south-north magnetic fields when they poop?

🐾 𝙋𝙖𝙬𝙨, 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙪𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 “𝘼 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙤𝙜𝙨” 🐶📚

Life in our household means juggling two energetic kiddos, a furry tail wagging around, and a stack of books that’s always toppling over. But when we got our hands (and paws!) on 𝘈 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘰𝘨𝘴 by Carlie Sorosiak, it quickly became a family favorite pick for after school reading. Here’s why this book is barking up all the right trees for us! 🐕✨

Imagine this: you’re curled up on the couch, the kids are giggling, and the family dog snuggled up at your feet as you dive into a new learning adventure. Each section of A World of Dogs is like a little treasure trove—perfect for those moments when you have 10 to 20 minutes to spare before the family calendar comes a calling. The vibrant illustrations by Luisa Uribe? Oh, they’re a delight! Each page is an invitation to dive into the quirks and charms of doggy life. From myths to real-life heroes, every chapter has us saying, “Let’s look this up on YouTube Kids!”

Our favorite part? It’s packed with fun facts that keep us learning together. Did you know there’s a festive event called Barktoberfest? (From a girl who hates beer, that’s my kind of celebration)… Or that some dogs have helped their humans with life-saving tasks? These stories spark not just imagination but a curiosity that leads us to discover more about the world around us. It’s a chance to explore and understand the special bond we share with our furry friends. And after each reading session? We’re off to find videos about sled dogs or ancient doggy legends!

So, whether you’re a seasoned dog lover or just starting your canine journey, A World of Dogs is a tail-wagging treat for the whole family. Trust me, it’s a book you’ll want to fetch again and again!

Many thanks to @pubspotlight & @nosycrowus for the gifted copy.

Definitely a dense and comprehensive data dump all about dogs. This would be a very difficult read for kids younger than maybe 6th grade and may be too daunting for them. This book could possibly be somewhat entertaining for young non-readers just with the drawings of the dogs. However, I would hit this in middle school grades for sure. Would be a great source for school reports. The pictures were absolutely adorable. The history part got a bit long and even adults can't quite grasp the centuries and thousands of years ago concepts of dog origination. The dogs in the art section was very interesting and I even learned stuff as an adult. The quick little stories about helper and rescue dogs was great. I think the author represented and talked about so many countries, making it a diverse dive into dogs from around the whole world. Definitely a fitting title for the book.

When I requested this book, I wasn't expecting a dog encyclopedia, I thought it would be more of a simple picture book with some cool dog facts. Which- it is, but so much more. It is jammed packed full of facts about dogs, and beautiful illustrations. If you are a dog lover, you will absolutely love this book. It would be a great book for the classroom, or home library for children. It did get a little too "Sciency" at times and I wasn't a huge fan of that. But this book is thick and literally includes anything you would want to know about the nature of dogs, their history and origins.

An amazing reference book about canines from origins to science, breeds to fame, and abilities to brilliance for us all to enjoy. The in depth reference material will delight and inform readers of all ages and the illustrations truly open the door to treating this as a picture book to share with even the very littlest dog lover. The book has a lovely framework and handy table of contents allowing you to treat this more like a 5 minute bedtime book. Choose a topic for the night and help their little brains dig into the material, with any luck tuckering them out to snuggle up to sweet doggie filled dreams.

A World Of Dogs is a fascinating, educational, captivating, fun, cute, unique, and comprehensive read! This massive book is truly phenomenal! It is full of countless facts, stories, history lessons, and science. I LOVE dogs and have a decent bit of knowledge, but I learned so much from this book. It is wonderful! I appreciate the way the content is broken up. It does not feel like learning due to the formatting and voice of the author. I adore the clear adoration for dogs throughout this book. It is truly a dog lovers dream book! However, anyone who love a good nonfiction, animals, and fun facts will adore this book!
