The most successful African American in gay adult film, Bobby Blake has appeared in over one hundred movies. In My Life in Porn , Blake for the first time goes behind the scenes of the sex industry to reveal intimate stories that are sexy, fascinating, and sometimes disturbing. Blake also shares his private spiritual struggle and the quest for love.
I had seen a few of Bobby Blake's videos and thought it would be interesting to get into the mind of this guy. It turns out, I probably wouldn't like him if I knew him. He has done some great work for HIV/AIDS groups and has been a positive influence in young gay black men's lives and that is admirable, but his very strong connection to his religion and his violent tendencies towards people in his life, would make me wary around him.
I absolutely judged this book by its cover, and not in a bad way either. It gives honesty, sincerity, and nothing but positive vibes. I would recommend this book to anyone who can show compassion, in the places where it is least likely to be found.
Bobby Blake, love him or hate him, this is his tale of how he entered the world of gay porn and established himself as one of the best known performers of color. A very interesting read, and those who think they know him from his screen persona might be shocked to find that, for the most part, it IS/WAS just a persona.
I thought it might be interesting to hear how someone balances his work as a Methodist Mister and a porn star. It wasn't. Best thing about this book as the cost 99 cents.
I didn't think I would have liked this book at first
Oh, I didn't think I would have liked this book at first. But a lot of things he talks about still stand up today. The dude definitely went through a tough childhood. I'm happy he found a community in the end.
Reading the first five chapters was great and I made my up my mind that this might be a 5-star book.
But after that , the next chapters were just filled with too much angst and a bit of self-aggrandizement.
Also , there was a number of inconsistencies about how he feels about certain things. In certain paragraphs, he says something but in a later paragraph he contradicts himself
eg. 1. In the chapter Naked Racism, he was mad that no Black Porn Actor won in their Awards night and angrily said that he wouldnt stand for it. The following year after that incident, he mentioned that a new category was made and he won in that award . The category was "Best Ethnic Performer."
I believe that the award title is more disparaging than not having a black winner the previous year.
Also, he mentioned that "how it his movies were perceived and what the viewer put onto it didn't worry him." Then, whey does he give a crap about not having a black winner in an Gay Porn Awards night. It's preference. Just like he says he doesnt like to go out with girlie gay men.
*** 2 stars for it was okay and for writing effort, although the word asked was misspelt 2x... (axed)
