The Heroes We Break

Rate this book
She doesn’t belong to me.

I am the illegitimate son, unwanted and despised.

Ophelia Hart is the girl next door. I’ve watched her grow up. And rescued her countless times from my half-brother.

I’ve been gone from her life for two years and when I run into her again, she’s no longer a girl.

Only problem is, she’s wearing his ring on her finger.

But there’s always been something between us. I’ve always been her protector. Especially when it comes to him. And that pull is stronger than ever.

She no longer thinks me the hero of her story, though.

But I know something she doesn’t. A secret from her past. And she’s in danger.

She’ll fight me.

I’ll fight for her.

If she hates me for what I have to do, so be it.

Because there is no way in hell I will let my half-brother have her.

''To feel loss you must lose something''

Safety warnings:
- Grey area cheating (not between MC's)*
- OM drama
- No OW drama
- Violence
- Mention of domestic abuse
- Physical/verbal abuse
- Loss of loved ones
- Mention of assault of a minor
- Cliffhanger

I can always depend on Natasha Knight to give me the angst I crave.

This story revolves around Ophelia and Silas who are basically star-crossed lovers with a twist of wrong time, miscommunication, third party interventions and past mistakes.

I'll say this before we start, the blurb gives you a hint that there might be a love triangle and I was hesitating when I signed up to read this, but I am glad it's nothing like that. It's a triangle but there is no love for both men but just one.

Ophelia is stuck between a rock and a hard place; her life has fallen apart and the people who are ''helping'' her are nothing but snakes and only after their own end goal. Sadly, Ophelia is a pawn in their game, and she is too blinded by years of being around them and memories to realize the truth. Her fathers’ crimes are too straight forward for it to be true in my eyes but what secrets are there? We find a few in this book and they are mind-blowing.

She frustrated me with her lack of back bone, so what you lose her comfort if you walk away? Just do it. It's better to have nothing than to be their pet and live your life by their rules and needs.

*There is grey area cheating as the few instances our MC's get together Ophelia is technically with the half-brother but doesn’t feel bad for him. He doesn't deserve her loyalty as it's hinted multiple times he has cheated and still does it. There is no love there and it's all just a habit for them to be together at this point.

Silas, this guy has had a rough life. He never catches a break and his whole life he was stuck being looked down upon, never wanted. His mother was a brave woman for making sure he got a decent life (well education). He was able to leave that hell hole he called a home and make something of himself and found success to overpower the men who tries to break him.

I don't trust anyone besides Silas in this book. Ophelia is too unstable for me to keep her on the list even though she is as clueless as the I am going into book 2.

Silas will do everything to save her, but she needs to trust him to let it happen and not believe everything someone tells her when she can see deception in front of her.

That cliffhanger was unexpected and thankfully book 2 is only a few weeks away! We won't have to wait long for the conclusion.

sister, why did you willingly stay with a man who literally assaulted you on your 16th birthday (and almost raped you, mind you) and put up with his shit and his family’s when all of the red flags are literally right in front of YOUR FACE and then you had the audacity to get shocked when their true color shows 😭🙏🏻 i hope ophelia grows a backbone in the next book bc this girl badly needs to STAND UP.

I will read anything this author gives us, and when I say this book exceeded my expectations, I actually mean that it was completely different from what Natasha Knight has written for the last 10 or so books.

“Broken hero or not. Villains often win, don’t they? The other endings are fairy tales. Don’t you know that yet, little girl?”

This book follows Ophelia Hart, Silas Cruz and the Fox family in a span of 10 years going back and forth between past and present to lay out how the present came to be.

Ophelia Hart has had her whole life turned upside down when her father was arrested. She was removed from the safety of her life and placed on an unstable situation where men seems to expect her to follow their orders and be happy about it.

Silas Cruz has always been cast as the bastard son of a married and wealthy man. He swore revenge against the Foxes and unfortunately Ophelia is a collateral damage. or is she?

I loved how this book was construed. The combination of two timelines felt organic. We unravel what happened in the past that created such a mess in the present in a seamless way without it just being unceremoniously dumped on us. It made us get attached to the character and root for the main characters to be able to conquer their lives.

I loved the relationship between the main characters and one particular scenes now lives rent free in my head. I will give you a hint: it involves water.

“Good girl. Fuck. That’s a good girl.”

Throughout the book I felt very anxious, mainly because flashbacks always makes me anxious, but I had this inkling sensation that something was amiss and being proven right only added to the dread I felt about the ending of this book.

The ending was glorious and I don't know how I will be able to wait for the next book. I need to know what it means for our characters.

Thank you to Natasha Knight and Candice Kane PR for the amazing opportunity of reading this early copy in exchange for an honest review.

The FMC is so stupid and annoying, like girl are you dumb? the fact that she got together with ethan even though he hurt her countless times, like girl what? she has no sense of loyalty towards her FATHER. she deserts him the second he goes to jail and bc her fiance's family was wronged by him and they're really nice to her, she can't hurt them by having any form of communication with him. LIKE GIRL YOUR FATHER RAISED YOU. she is just so dumb i cant even. and the MMC is crazy and not in a good way

Natasha Knight stories always WRECK and CONSUME me and oh my did I love the start of the Heroes and Villains duet! The Heroes We Breck was mesmerizing and engrossing, another delicious and thrilling NK story full of lies and secrets, the machinations of nefarious and calculating men, and the most epic romantic tension. Natasha always delivers love stories that deftly dance around in all humanity’s gray- and I’m already addicted to this world and these characters. Passion, intrigue, twists, and ANGST! It’s like Romeo and Juliet meets Wuthering Heights, and oh lawdy am I here for it!

What I loved most about this story is that our anti-hero Silas feels a bit different than our normal Natasha man. He’s good- he has a lot of good IN him, and he only leans on his dark edge when he must in order to advance his aims…aims that are altruistic yet selfish…aims that involve confronting those who have wronged him. He’s got a tenderness and softness in places, the result of a bit of a hardened fragility that I really appreciated. But he’s still also intimidating, wily, ruthless, and has that dark NK edge. I found him utterly enchanting- and also wildly delicious. And paired with an in trouble heroine, engaged to the WRONG brother, in a BAD situation, and completely alone. She’s lost…both in her own identity as well as lost because she doesn’t have all the truths she needs. But she’s smart and resourceful- even if she’s soft when backed into a corner. She’s my kind of heroine- vulnerable, weakened, too gentle to rise from the ashes YET…but she will.

I love this story because no one really is to be trusted- everyone is unreliable in some way. Either because they are hiding something or because they don’t have the full picture. And of course there are plot twists galore and a epic cliffhanger that has me DESPERATE for more! I need all the answers!

***4,5 "Guardian angel!!!" stars***

"I used to think you were some hero growing up, you know that?
But heroes break. And you're broken, Silas. You're so broken that you've become the villain of your own story."

I love every story that Natasha Knight is delivering, and this story wasn't an exception...
I loved Silas so much and I loved the connection he had with Ophelia, a connection that was tainted by others... Humans who lie, deceit and betray...
This story had it all and yes, there was a kind of a love triangle, that isn't worth being mentioned in reality, cause it really was only one guy for the heroine and that was Silas Cruz...
But things were very complicated in here and I loved every single moment in here...

"You're always rescuing me, Silas Cruz."
"You always seem to be in need of rescuing, Ophelia Hart."

Silas and Ophelia was somehow starcrossed lovers who got sidetracked from so many things...
While Ophelia was younger, Silas was always her protector and he was saving her constantly from his half-brother...
How this girl ended up enganged with this said half-brother is beyond me, but here we are!!!
Something awful happened to Ophelia's life and the Foxes misguided her to become one of theirs and Ophelia felt obligated by everything they were offering her that she became their pawn.
Now, Silas is back to save her for once again... But Ophelia doesn't trust him anymore...
He stopped being her hero and he feels like the villain of her story. But what is true and what is false around her???

"Silas Cruz...
The villain I want to hate but am drawn to like a moth to the flame."

There was always a connection between Ophelia and Silas, but there was always something standing between them and most of the time that someone was Ethan Fox.
Ethan always hated Silas, even though the latter was only the help, the illegimate son...
And Ophelia got caught in the crossfires not only between the two brothers, but between two families and their secret agendas...
She unwillingly became a pawn and it is difficult to find her way out of the hole they had thrown her...
Silas's mind is always set up on revenge, but Ophelia might mean more than this!!!
Are the heroes really breaking after all???

"Maybe I will always come to rescue you. Broken hero or not. Villains often win, don't they? The other endings are fairy tales. Don't you know that yet, little girl?"

I loved both Ophelia and Silas...
I trust no one in here more that Silas Cruz. This guy was everything!!!
Ophelia was his weakness and it showed... And that weakness might cost him everything!!!
My heart was breaking for him and his mother.... For everything that they had to go through in life... for the sacrifices that they had to make and the things that they had to bare...
Ophelia was something special and pure for him and he was determined to be her savior no matter what will it be the cost!!

"Ophelia Hart needs saving, once again. And I'm the one who always save her. She said so herself. I won't fuck up twice. I won't let her walk away twice."

Ophelia was kind of a frustrating character for me...
This girl was like a puppet and everyone was doing what they wanted with her...
Her backbone was nowhere at side... only in front of Silas...
And i needed her to wake up and realize that she was lost in a labyrinth full of secrets and lies and she was just sitting there and was taking it!!!
But I can understand that she was being so brainwashed that she couldn't recognize the den of vipers that she was living in...
One particular scene made me so sad for this girl... She was really a damsel in distress and her knight in shining armour had so many open fields to war on...

"I'm drawn to him like I've never been drawn to any other man."

And now, I am impatiently waiting for the next part cause I am driving myself insane with my theories about everything...
I am just wishing to my beloved Silas tons of patience cause now, he is the villain in Ophelia's life and he has to fight very hard to make her see the truth...
Thank God that the second part will be in our hands shortly, cause I don't how I could stand waiting for it!!!

"She’ll fight me.
I’ll fight for her.
If she hates me for what I have to do, so be it.
Because there is no way in hell I will let my half-brother have her."

"Tell me something. Tell me what you feel when he touches you."
"Let me go."
"Tell me."
"It's none of your business."
"Fine. I'll tell you. Nothing. You feel nothing with him. You can't."
"You're wrong
, Silas."
I bend to kiss the beating pulse at her neck. "Because it's me that makes your pulse race. It's my touch that does it."
"It's not."
"I should strip you naked. Take you here and now. Make you mine and finish this."

The Heroes We Break🦸‍♂️

The Heroes We Break is just a spectacular start to the Heroes and Villains duet by Knight❣️

I’ve started and restarted writing this review a few times as I don’t want to give too much away. Suffice to say the main characters are Ophelia Hart, Silas Cruz and the Fox family. But not everything is as it seems and the secrets unravel over the years.

I have to admit there were a few moments where I was feeling a bit murderous and some assumptions I made that were correct but when revealed I was only halfway right…which I love when I follow the bread crumbs laid out for me😁

What I will say is I’m not sure I can wait for the conclusion…but I will TRY…that ending was TOO GOOD and left me wanting more. I received an advanced copy and willingly leave my honest opinion😍

Ophelia Hart whole life changes when her father goes away to prison. She is supposed to marry the son her father’s business partner, Ethan Fox, but that family has secrets and an enemy named Silas Cruz. He wants vengeance and Ophelia is caught in the middle. I don’t want to say anymore as it’s better to unravel the story for yourself. This spans 10 years so it is told in past and present tense to set the picture of what happened between these two families. What happened between Silas, Ethan & Ophelia to cause the fracture? Get ready for a slow building mystery and a huge shocking cliffhanger. I’m excited to see what happens next especially after that ending. Told in first person and dual POV.

The Heroes We Break (Heroes and Villians Duet #1) by Natasha Knight is something else. I sure didn't see this story going in the direction it went in. Ophelia has lived next door to step brothers Ethan and Silas. Silas, as the older illegitimate son has has to live in the shadow of his younger brother Ethan. Ethan has always thought he was better than Silas and made it his business to put him in his place. Ophelia has been around their toxic relationship and has seen it all. Now, as adults, things have certainly changed. Now, a man of means, Silas, has come back to town to once again save Ophelia from his brother Ethan as well as getting revenge on their father. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed that I did not see coming. I am so ready for this next book because I know it is going to be fire. The author left me sitting on the edge of my seat and clutching my pearls. Poor naive Ophelia, she just can't seem to learn that messing around with Ethan is nothing but trouble. Time and time again, he has shown her who he really is, and she is so desperate for his attention. Now, she has found herself in a situation that Silas just may not be able to rescue her from this time. I can't wait to find out if he can save her this time. Hopefully, book 2 will be out soon. This story is a slow burn but ends with a bang. 4.5 stars for me.

I couldn't wait to dive into this book. If the author is Natasha Knight, it's a must-read!!

Silas Cruz... Oh my goodness. He is a steamy man.

Ophelia needs a hero, and it just so happens Silas is always there when she needs one.

This story is epically fantastic. I could not, for a second, put it down.
I was hooked on the suspense of what would happen next and the steam. Well.. HOT!

The angst and intense hate for certain characters I have, well, let's just leave it there. I need to know what happens next. I can't wait for the next book!

“Maybe I am here to rescue you. Maybe I will always come to rescue you.” He spins me. “Broken hero or not. Villains often win, don’t they? The other endings are fairy tales. Don’t you know that yet, little girl?”

I'm hanging on the edge of my seat!!!!

This is book one of the Heroes and Villains Duet and ends on a heart stopping cliffhanger. It seems Ophelia is a pawn in everyone's game and its hard to know who she can trust. Silas might be the villain but I think he has her best interests at heart. Ethan is just a daddy's boy who's being forced to go along with whatever his dad has told him and he's definitely not the good guy he pretends to be.

4/5 ⭐️
4/5 🌶️

This books (duet) had so many twists, secrets, turns, shockers - you name it, it’s in here. These books follow Ophelia and Silas through a seriously twisted story of their lives. This duet jumps between past and present (a little bit) to give a picture of how Ophelia, Silas and the rest of the Fox and Heart family came to be where they are today.

Poor Ophelia was constantly being manipulated (or made to believe she was). She had a really hard time in the first book believing in herself or her previous relationships. We see in the second book how that broke both Ophelia and Silas. Silas was the perfect anti-hero. He was always there rescuing Ophelia and working behind the scenes. I loved the symbolism and the little bread crumbs the author put in there so you have some idea of what is coming but not the whole story. There was a lot going on so it was a little hard to keep things straight sometimes but the ending was perfect. You definitely want to check for TWs but if you can - happy reading!

❤~🌟~❤ 4.5 ELECTRIFYING STARS! ❤~🌟~❤

I have always been transfixed with Natasha’s Knight’s dark romances so when I learned of this new Heroes and Villains duet my pulse raced with anticipation! And while this heart-gripping, second chance tale is a departure from her mafia arranged marriage/secret society tropes, THE HEROES WE BREAK is enthralling in its own right!

PREMISE:
This tumultuous romance revolves around Ophelia Hart, Silas Cruz and the filthy rich Fox family. Phee is on the verge of marrying Ethan, the son of her father’s former business partner, but her entire world is torn apart when her dad is arrested. There has been bad blood between the Foxes and Cruzes for over a decade and this new development finally gives Silas the opportunity to exact his long-awaited revenge. And Ophelia is his perfect pawn. Or IS she? As the bastard son of Sly Cruz, Silas has always been treated like trash by his father’s family and has a mega sized chip on his shoulder. But from the moment his piercing turquoise gaze locked on Phee when they were teenagers, he’s always had a soft spot for the sweet, innocent girl next door. Over the years his affection for his precious O never faltered, and he became her self-appointed rescuer more times than he can count, sparking a forbidden attraction that caught them both off guard.

But that was then...this is NOW and their youthful ardor morphed into simmering hostility when she became betrothed to his loathsome half-brother. But he cannot allow that marriage to take place. Yet even though Silas schemes to wrench her out of Ethan’s slimy clutches and claim her for himself, not all is what it seems. For hard as he tries to fight it, “Barbie” rouses a carnal passion and fierce protectiveness in him that jeopardizes everything he’s set in motion. As for Ophelia, she lusts and loathes her childhood friend-turned-sworn nemesis in equal measure. Silas can be cold and scornful and shockingly cruel yet also exquisitely gentle and nurturing and ferociously protective, and no one has ever set her blood on fire like he can! Which leaves us wondering…has Silas truly become the villain of his own story or is he the savior she’s been dreaming of all along?

MY MUSINGS:
Wowza! Part one of this riveting “friends to enemies to lovers” duet definitely starts off with a bang. THE HEROES WE BREAK is pulsating with thrilling twists and turns, danger and dueling desire, and a soul burning love connection that cannot be denied!

Juxtaposing between the present and the past, the author crafted this tumultuous tale brilliantly as she sets the stage for ten years of bad blood that has transpired between the Fox and Cruz families. And as dark, dangerous secrets and unforgivable deceptions are slowly unveiled, the reader becomes more and more hopelessly enraptured! The tempestuous romance that unfolds between Ophelia and Silas was raw and organic. Scorching hot. And teeming with such intense, heart palpitating emotion it riled me up in the best possible way!

As always, Natasha Knight pens larger than life anti-heroes you love to hate but in this story I felt such worshipful adoration for this MC from the start that I couldn’t help but swoon!. Gah…Silas is so GLORIOUSLY ALPHA and BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN he completely slayed my heart! Emanating pure, primal “touch her and you die” vibes, there is something about this tortured hero in all his jealous/possessive, righteously wrathful fury that made me melt! Deep down I knew every calculated move he made stemmed from both deep-seated devotion and long. festering pain so I fully understood what made him tick. And to say that he and Ophelia have a rich, complicated history together is putting it MILDLY.

Yet no matter what heated ire or heart lacerating bitterness transpired between them, it was abundantly clear Silas would never do anything to hurt his precious O—who has blossomed from the bookish, shy girl with wild hair and big glasses into a stunningly beautiful woman. On the contrary, though their lifelong friendship has now been fractured by fierce vitriol and brutal passion, the gorgeous, defiant spitfire still brings out a gruffly tender, crazy protective side to him that belies his heartless attitude and questionable maneuvers. So, there was NEVER a doubt in my mind that Ophelia’s childhood savior turned dark avenging angel would fight for her till his last dying breath!

As for Ophelia, while on the surface she may appear fragile, deep down she’s NO damsel in distress. An enticing combination of sweet, virtuous innocent and headstrong spitfire, this blonde-haired beauty gave as good as she got! I love how she navigated her arduous new circumstances with bravado and unfaltering strength yet also retained her aching vulnerability…which made her one beautifully nuanced heroine! Torn between her forced alliance to a family she’s beholden to, and her contemptuous, all-consuming passion for her “fiancés” cruel yet powerfully commanding half-brother, I rooted for her every step of the way. I love how even though she openly resents Silas for the ugliness in their past, there’s no denying that’s while he’s the villain she wants to hate, she’s drawn to like a moth to the flame.

“Silas is fireworks and heat, a blaze so f*cking hot it will incinerate us both, turn us to ash.”

Speaking of fireworks… HOLY HOT TAMALE, the chemistry between Ophelia and Silas was all kinds of combustible! Their palpable sexual tension and torrid erotic encounters were beyond EXPLOSIVE! I simply couldn’t get enough of the palpable push pull between these two as they circled around one another and tried to keep their guards up. But against all odds, their fates were tethered together in ways neither could control. Ultimately, their connection was hypnotic. Heart stopping. And hopelessly addictive!

And…eeek…talk about a vicious family feud that drives this story forward in deliciously devious ways, leaving us on pins and needles in the process! There is something absolutely intoxicating about the lethal power struggle/cut-throat rivalry between Silas and Ethan, two estranged half-brothers who have clashed their whole lives and now vie for the love of one woman. But alas, only one man will be left standing, and without spilling too much, let’s just say that all is NOT fair in love and war . Because the atrocities that’s transpired leading up to jaw dropping climax made my BLOOD RUN COLD, and I truly hope and pray that the real villains of this story get their comeuppance in the next installment.

BOTTOM LINE:
This provocative, pulse pounding tale was flawlessly executed, pulverized us with all the feels and whipped us up into a frenzied lather! Now I shall be waiting with bated breath for THE VILLIANS WE MAKE!

" Broken hero or not. Villians often win, don't they? The other endings are fairy tales. Don't you know that yet, little girl?"

This starts with Ophelia and Silas doing a bit of time jumping.
An easy way to give us a glimpse of their pasts and a little history that will help us connect with the why's and the who's
Don't fear the author does the time travel flawlessly

I thought early on I had this all figured out - I was so wrong
Miles from X marks the spot
Sure I had properly placed a couple of pieces
But the twists and realities that came from nowhere...

The truth behind the betrayals
The real reason driving our little band of psychos
I have no words

And the dark-as-night moments/revelations right before the serious OMFrackingG cliffy?
Holy Hades
I'm shaking

The Foxes deserve everything that the karma bus delivered/s
Ethan gave me the creeps from the beginning
All the Fox's are a little off
Their combined ick factor left me feeling ill

And as much as I love Silas there were moments it took everything I had not to reach in and redirect him

And Ophelia
Ugh
I adore your innocent view of the world
But you have to remove those rose-colored glasses
And no I didn't mean to replace them with contacts of the same color
I mean WAKE UP

Wow! Just WOW!!

I couldn’t put this down, it was so bloody good!

It’s slightly different for Natasha moving away from the Mafia/society type tropes we’re used to, and I friggin love it and some!

I fell in love with Silas from the off, which is unusual for the H in Natasha books, usually we are hating on them big time before we turn.

As for poor Phee! Gahhhh she doesn’t know if she’s coming or going, she is so trapped in this nightmare.

I hate Ethan and Sly and I hope they are going to get the full force of wrath in book two, because they have earned it a million times over.

So many twists and turn in this book and there is still more to come and I can’t wait, bring on The Villains we make…..I need it so much.

Now this is a truly mysterious duet starring Ophelia and Silas. Former neighbors turned enemies these two have a history of Silas saving Ophelia in her greatest moments of need. Ophelia is definitely very vulnerable and naieve in this book blinded by Silas' evil family's kindness and engaged to his half brother. She made an excellent damsel in distress but also had emotional ties to Silas that made their chemistry pop. Silas seems to walk the line of hero and villain well but can't stop putting Ophelia first even if she supposedly betrayed him. This book has some twists ahead I'm interested to see develop in the next book of this exciting duet.

Ugh. This couple is a train wreck. Now, do I continue on to the next one or not? 🙄

Whoa

Okay. Firstly, this book contains on-page DV. There are no trigger warnings, and I feel it’s important that potential readers know this about the content.

So. This book was intense. I feel like Ophelia was incredibly naive and oblivious to what was going on around her. Ethan and his parents were vile. Reading about them left me feeling so uneasy. Silas is a Batman-esque character in some ways - always there to save the heroine. He’s playing a very long game. I hope we get an HEA in the next book, but you can never be sure with dark romance.

This book ends on a doozy cliffhanger! It is nail-biting, edge of your seat reading. There are so many twists and turns. There were many moments of throat-punching needed to members of the Fox family. Poor innocent Ophelia. My heart went out to her for what she had to endure throughout her life. I am impatiently waiting for book two!
