First: kill Satan. Second: reorganize Hell. Sounded simple enough back then, but for Betsy Taylor, managing "down below" isn't as easy as she'd hoped - even if she is doing it with her sister, Laura, a bona-fide Antichrist. So yes, Betsy has been shirking her hellish responsibilities, but she's been just so darn busy these days. And she's not just yanking Laura's chain. There's a brand new baby drama involving a pair of uncanny (ok, terrifying) toddler twins, an upcoming birthday party that has to be planned, and, are you ready for it? Betsy's dad - once so very dead - has been spotted in downtown St. Paul.
Now, despite all the chaos, Betsy's friends rally around, helping her to handle all this fire and brimstone jazz. As for Betsy's sister and dad - they have their own surprises in store for the vampire queen. And jolt by jolt, Betsy will discover that there's nothing as heartwarming as family. Yeah, like Hell.

UNDEAD AND UNWARY: A Train Wreck Post date: 1/20/2015 http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/201...

Great Cover!

Queen Betsy was one of the first series I read as a blogger. It was funny, it was sexy, it had snarky dialogue. Sometime ago, however, it seems to have stopped being all of those things. This makes me sad. Is anyone editing this writer anymore? See I’ve seen this series going off the tracks as the plotting seemed to become erratic, but then I thought she had managed not to derail entirely with the last book. Well, no, with this one the train has completely gone off the track.

There were entire pages of this book that made less sense than THE JABBERWOCKY. Either MJD’s characters, or the author herself has ceased being able to construct a proper sentence. I’ve heard MJD speak, and even chatted with her and she is an amusing, highly intelligent woman, so I don’t know what the issue is.

But I do know that, while the writer is vibrant the book are now just frantic rambles through the land of lost storylines. And, I thought there was an anti-Semitic comment about halfway through Chapter 24. I don’t have a finished copy but the galley I had referred to finally figuring out a vampire was Jewish, Betsy was, “…surprised his victim predilection didn’t tip them off.” I don’t see it as in context for character development. It was probably inadvertent, or just a stupid thing to write, but that is why there are editors. I wish I could tell you the reference was removed but my e-galley is uncorrected.

What I did like was that Betsy, who seems to grow in each book, but without overall effect, does seem to have a serious epiphany that seems to cause a lot of growth all at once. We learn that the nice girl, the pretty girl, is not at all nice, but thinks she is. And there are a couple of surprises.

Here’s a question: Where the heck is BabyJon, Betsy’s brother who she is raising? She refers to him a lot, but while we see Sinclair’s puppies and Jessica’s babies, we never see BabyJon. It’s possible it is explained in another volume in the series, and I missed it.

So here’s the deal: if you want to read this, you can expect a dialogue that feels like a cat chasing a laser spot. This is one you probably want to get at the library or book sale. I would never pay the asking price for this one.

Read: October 2016

The good:
- Betsy is her usual self; funny and self-involved with the occasional sharp and unexpected insight that catches everyone off-guard.
- The character development of Laura has been interesting to watch over the course of the series.
- The side-plot involving Jessica's twins is also fascinating; I think it is a very original idea to actually hold Betsy accountable for her time-travel meddling in such an unusual way. I would definitely read a book told from the twins POV and how they have to live their life.
- Betsy's idea of Hell is perfect and it is truly my idea of Hell.
- I like that the Ant has become a slightly more bearable character in this story.

The Bad:
- Sinclair has become so one-dimensional over the past few books. He has become more like an object of humour as he bumbles about hand-baking treats for his dogs, occasionally pausing to have sex with Betsy. The old Sinclair of the early books has totally gone.
- What was the point of it didn’t add anything to story, except to make him seem like even more of a terrible person. Maybe he will be a vital part of one the future novels but right now it seems pointless.
- No BabyJon or Mrs. Taylor in this book.

Overall rating: 3.5/5 stars (rounded up to 4 stars)

Genre: Paranormal. Vampires.
Series: The Undead Series book #13

:: 3.5 Pretty Little Stars ::
I love this series. I have loved it since the first book was written and I will continue reading it until the series ends. However, I will say that I enjoyed the beginning of the series (probably the first 5 books) the best. Maybe it's because of the "changes" that occurred in terms of Betsy making a small mistake while time traveling, or perhaps the series is just getting redundant. In any case, I did enjoy this one and I will definitely read the next two.

Once again, Betsy is the self absorbed, "dumb blonde". She makes a ton of mistakes, and we as readers can help but laugh when they occur. Watching the world change because of her errors are hilarious, and this still kind of occurs in this one. All the characters are fairly likeable (not a huge fan of Jessica post babies) but they still hold my interest and keep me entertained.

Would I recommend this series? Yes, I would. Some people hate the changes that occur a few books in, but you do find yourself hooked on it regardless. If your looking for a fun, light hearted, and fast paced paranormal read/series I would say try this one. But make sure to read all the books in order. Undead and Unwed is book 1.

For the love of God, please let this woman stop writing this series so that I can stop reading it. They just get worse every time. I do lie a little. I gave this one two stars simply because Betsy seems to show a small amount of growth by the end of this book. For that it sucks slightly less than the last few.

I don't have the strength to pick it apart in detail. I gave it three stars because it wasn't as bad as some of the more recent books in the series. But I feel like the author has really lost track of the main character. Betsy doesn't know how to pronounce words with silent letters in them like subtle properly, but she can give a detailed lecture on what a trope is. The amount of trivia and knowledge that Betsy spouted in this book was dizzying, it was deep into Mary Sue territory, clearly the author's passions and opinions reflected in her idealized character. What was fun about Betsy in the beginning was that she was underestimated and smart because people didn't realize they she was payoff attention and that she had emotional intelligence, even though she acted like everything was all about her. She'd turn around and figure out how to solve the problem because she saw through all of the bull and could see a smart solution that everyone else missed. She didn't lecture like a book reviewer (or author) about tropes. I'm glad that MJD has a book in a new series coming out soon because this one needs to be put to bed.

I've gotta admit. This is by far the BEST book in this series for a long time. I mean, wow. This. This is the redeeming story that I've been waiting for! For all the time, Betsy has been pretty bad ass on certain occasions that is always by the near end of each story but is quite annoying at the beginning. All your hope's that she does not regress are somewhat crushed when you start the next book and you're like, "Have you learned nothing from the previous book?!" But no. This one dives straight into the problem, save for a few to some spiraling, unnecessary details. This book is the epitome of Betsy's growth and maturity ever since she has been hailed the Vampire Queen and has freed the Morningstar.

Overall drama was exceptional. I love those bad ass Betsy ultimatum scenes. I love the constant support she gets from all the people around her. I love her emotional breakdown scenes when she realized her flaws and failures. Betsy's becoming a force you take seriously without turning into the Ancient Betsy she fears to be. Again, exceptional drama feels were rendered from this very well-conceived and conceptualized plot. Great job. If there is a next book, please do not let Betsy regress. She's come too far, suffered and endured too much.

[EDIT]
I am not a quitter! There are still two more books and I will read this series' conclusion! By the way, have you seen the plot synopsis of the next book Undead and Unforgiven? IT IS EPIC! ;)

Betsy's character has so much potential. I really want to like the scatter-brained ditz with a heart of gold. Davidson just takes it too far. It feels like she uses the ditz thing as an excuse to not actually construct a meaningful story. A solid 2/3 of this story was mindless rambling and selfishness. That's excessive. Davidson just strikes me as lazy. Betsy's character is incredibly inconsistent as well. On one page she is mispronouncing subtle (giving it a hard b), which is a pretty common word to fuck up. Then on the very next page she is pointing out someone ending a sentence with a preposition. Right, because that's believable.

The editor as well as the author seems incredibly lazy. At one point Betsy is atoning for being a selfish bitch and refusing to call Dick by his name. Yet somebody seems to have missed the major typo where she labelled everything "Property of Nick Barry." It seems like somebody (author, editor, someone!) should have caught that big whoopsie. It makes the entire atonement completely irrelevant and just makes her appear even more of a bitch; like that Dick opened up to her and she threw salt in the wound.

The book had its moments, but this series needs to be put out of its misery already. I not only wouldn't recommend this series to anyone, if I ever see someone eyeing the first book I will warn them against it (even though I actually really enjoyed the start of the series.)

My biggest complaint with the book is the constant repetition. And multiple times in the same book on the same topic. It made the book annoying. Add to that the convenient changes to past world building. For example, in book one, Betsy dad doted on her though he may have been at arms length at times. Now, she acts like he didn’t spoil her. The bigger is when she became a vampire almost a whole book or two talked how she could go days (close to a week or more, even made a game of how long to go...) without drinking blood or feeling thirsty. Now she talks about the thirst being constant or she can only go 3 days. I think Author has lost sight of what she began. And I’m probably done. Though I think there only maybe 2 books left in series. I might comeback to this and finish it out.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

A voir.

Like any long-running series that's out there, this one is starting to really go downhill. I haven't enjoyed the previous books as much, but still really enjoyed them & appreciated them for what they (tried) to be. I really struggled to enjoy this one as much, and it's definitely my least favorite so far.

So, thoughts? Well, Betsy's changing all right, and not for the better. All of a sudden she can talk about things her character would never care about, and instead of being smart-but-nobody-knows-it, now she's just spitting out trivia and facts. She has a few character-enlightening moments, which is swell, but the book just really drags on without much of anything happening. I don't read the series for the romance (yuck), and there's not a lot of it in this one.

2 honest stars. Nobody should read this book unless they love this series... I LOVE this series but I think this particular addition killed a few of my brain cells. An older review compared the writing and storylines in this to "watching a cat chase a laser pointer on a wall". Bravo and spot on! I'm not quite sure what's going on with MJD, but I'm sure she'll sort it out and return this series to its sassy brilliance in the next offering (everything..,EVERYTHING CROSSED)! Anyway, onward and upward, I love Betsy so I will be downloading the next instalment just as soon as I forget how slow, erratic and boring this one was. Which won't be long given the brain damage from reading this one... See, I already forgot I'd mentioned that bit already!

Please Let Me Off This Ride!

I absolutely hated 50-70% of this book. It may be partially my fault for trying to read 2 MaryJanice books consecutively, which is a torture deserving of the Hell Mall (you’ll get the reference if you read the book). The endless, asinine, chaotic banter that goes on in the protagonist’s head is enough to drive anyone crazy. It was naive of me to try to read so much of it at once (ironically very similar to the book of the dead written by Ancient Betsy from the future on human skin that drives its reader insane).

I used to really enjoy this series but I can’t do it anymore. I’ve outgrown MaryJanice’s writing style. I’m happy she finally progressed the plot half way through the book and there was a satisfying ending but it’s not enough to keep me as a reader. Betsy is an idiot and I know that’s part of her charm but I can’t go along for the ride anymore. Good luck to all of those who stay. Enjoy yourself. I’m out!

Maybe its because its I haven't read one of these books in years, but it wasn't as terrible as I remember. There was a lot of unnecessary sex and so much crazy (as per usual). I'll probably finish the series.... but only because I am so close to the end.

MaryJanice Davidson returns with another book in the Undead/Queen Betsy series. Undead and Unwary is the thirteenth book in the series and fans will be thrilled with the humor and banter between Betsy and her cohorts. The Queen of the Vampires is up to her ears in new responsibilities and lots of family drama. Davidson excels at quirky characters with so much dysfunction that the reader can't help but laugh and she does it again in this book and gives readers just another reason to cheer for Betsy as she tries to re-organize Hell.

I've got to admit, first of all that this is my first Betsy book. MaryJanice Davidson has done very well for herself with this series and she has tons of fans to prove it. Being a paranormal fan, you would think I would have tried this series out by now, but it has somehow stayed off my radar. There were some things that I liked and some things that I found daunting, coming into the series at book thirteen. Davidson has created a world where a lot of impossible things are possible and that alone was reason enough for me to like this one.

Betsy has a very eclectic household, that includes a ton of characters. Which provides the reader a lot of different angles to view the story. But it was a bit confusing for someone who has never read any of the other books. It didn't take me long to figure out who Betsy's lover was, Sinclair, or who her sister was. Betsy refers to her as the Antichrist, which I found exceptionally funny. But all of the other characters were harder for me to place. I wasn't sure how they had all come to live together or what each persons significance was. Also there was the issue of some sort of time warp disturbance that had things in the house turned upside down. I said all that to say this... Read these in order, I think you'll understand it better and enjoy it more. That's not to say that I didn't have some good things going on in this one.

I loved the humor and the banter that MaryJanice Davidson uses in this book. Betsy has a penchant for sarcasm and I loved that. Her inner dialogue is irreverent and full of one liners that a person won't be able to pass up. The way she talks about her sister is just too funny. Now that they are tasked with running Hell, together, they are going to have to spend some time together and it was a riot. The humor was well written and added a lot to the story.

From what I could gather, Betsy is a bit new to the responsibility of Hell and she doesn't seem too interested in making a go of it. Add to that, that some strange things are going on in her household and it's a recipe for disaster. There were parts of the book that had a feeling of immaturity to them that I couldn't quite understand. I thought maybe Betsy was just a little irked with her title of Queen, but it was obvious that this was not what she had in mind for the way her life would go. It was a bit disconcerting to read. I wanted her to accept her life and her responsibilities and get on with it. She does come around a little bit, but I was still somewhat disappointed in the way she handled things.

The bigger part of the story is told through dialogue. There are pages and pages of it. And in some books that works and in others it doesn't. For me, it didn't quite work here. I had a terrible time trying to follow some of it and had to go back and re-read several portions to try to understand what was meant to be shared. As I said before, this is my first book by the author and perhaps that is just part of her style. But it was new to me and a bit too hard to understand.

Bottom Line:

I liked the humor in this story, but I felt very out of place with most of the book. I didn't get a good feeling for the author's style and way of writing. It was hard for me to follow and seemed at times too immature for my tastes. However, none of that may be the fault of the author or writing. I am pretty old school when it comes to reading and this was just too different from what I was used to for me to enjoy, but that doesn't mean it won't be for you. Give it a try and see what you think!

Review courtesy of Dark Faeries Tales

Quick & Dirty: Queen of the vampires, co-ruler of hell, is the weird stuff ever going to stop happening?

Opening Sentence: “You know how you see someone you love stuck with a job they don’t know how to do?”

The Review:

Betsy is back in Undead and Unwary! Here is my tiny disclaimer, I have not read this series at all! So I am not positive how soon after Undead and Unsure does Undead and Unwary starts. Betsy has killed Satan and is now the co-ruler of Hell with Laura. Betsy also finds out and begins looking into her father’s death, as her bestie Jessica claims to have seen him. Betsy knows her stepmother Ant is dead as she saw her as a ghost shortly after the accident. Betsy also does time-traveling chasing the twins around.

Betsy and Sinclair are still going strong despite the fact that she is sure he is angling to get a piece of Hell for himself. Betsy also finds herself being out maneuvered and being manipulated into taking over all of Hell. It also brings her to the realization that she has a lot of people who care about her and are willing to help her. I am going to stop there as the rest may be spoilers, I will say she does let some people have it!

This being my first book in the series, I have to say I wasn’t as confused as I thought I would be for not having read the 12 books before this one. The author also does a great job of foot-noting things so that you know which book previous things happened in. One of the major things I loved about this book was the wit, the weirdness and just the all around funny stuff Betsy says or thinks. She is a klutz and a train-wreck for bad things on bad days, but she tries and cares deeply about the people in her life.

Just like in real life she finds herself being used and set-up and isn’t happy about it. The only thing that confused me was the time-traveling, it really wasn’t explained and seemed to be just thrown in. However, since I haven’t read the other books that may not be the case, it may just be something that I am not aware of jumping into this series so late. I did enjoy how the paranormal in this book is just ordinary, it’s no big thing to be a vampire or werewolf or in charge of Hell.

I can’t make up my mind about the lack of action, I think most urban fantasy books I read have a ton of action in them, so I am on the fence whether the lack of action bugged me. Or if it was just a really interesting change of pace, someone using their brain to figure out things instead wielding a sword. In fact, while writing this out I have to say I enjoyed that it played a part into why I enjoyed this book, the MC was engaging, witty and totally normally abnormal. I can’t wait to start this series from the beginning so that I really can get to know all the characters and understand fully what is going on behind the scenes.

Notable Scene:

“The things we do in moments of weakness: recycling in a desperate attempt to save the earth, obsssively updating Amazon wish lists, agreeing to run Hell with the Anitchrist.”

“I screamed and nearly fell down the stairs a second time.”

“I wanted a baby of my own, and it had orphaned my brother.”

“Someone had lost their damned mind and egged the Antichrist.”

FTC Advisory: Berkley/Penguin provided me with a copy of Undead and Unwary. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

This is actually a 2.5. I loved this series at the start and would label probably the first 7 or 8 at a 5 star rating, but lately they have been dragging with the same old story line and Betsy is still just not growing up, etc, etc.

But this one finally made me laugh again. A lot, actually. I do need this series to wrap up though. I feel compelled to stick with it because I want to know how it all ends, and mad that these authors and publishers know this, hence drag em on! Overall, the series is worth it, and my fingers are crossed that Betsy and company are truly coming back to what they were before, because this one is promising!

I really really love (d) this series... This installment has left me so muffkin disappointed! In my opinion this is turning into fluffed/filler to keep another wise awesome series going (beginning to feel like the last 3 installments of Sookie Stackhouse), this would be acceptable and not worth griping about except for I really loved this series and had such a hard time forcing myself to finish this one, it all seemed so silly. Just grrrrrrr!

I really miss the old style of writing. All of the new books seem to be about the Queen of Vampires acting like a general idiot and chasing her tail. I'm SO SICK of the preventable drama. I hate main characters who cause all the trouble just by being stupid. It makes me want to reach into the book and shake her, which might be okay for one book, even two, but now I'm done. Get your shit together, girl.

It didn't quite advance the story, it just made things more confusing. Sinclair isn't cool anymore. I miss the old timeline, the new one is just too cartoony.

MaryJanice Davidson- Undead and Unwary
303 pages

I am less than enthusiastic about this series because I can’t help but to always go to the what if’s… There is so much more this series could have been. I try not to hold it against each book, but it’s hard. The series got ripped apart several books ago, and while I can see the good coming back, it’s hard to not think about what could have been.

Anyway… Betsy does more growing here. I’ve said it the last couple books, but it’s been true every time. She has been growing tremendously in recent books. It’s been good to see for the most part. All of her friends/roommates/family are changing too. Some of it was really good, some of it… not so much. This one has a lot to do with Hell, which was interesting.

The plot was kind of all over the place. It worked though, in a weird way. There are several that seem to compete for importance. I’m actually not used to that. It was a little strange, but it somehow worked. I still can’t bring myself to give it a five. There are still too many issues I have with the story, how it’s going, and what the next step looks like. While I did like it, I can’t seem to get back that sense of loving fondness I had for it in the beginning. Two books left. We’ll see how it goes.

Another annoying and irritating Betsy the Vampire Queen book. Again, we have the annoying dialogue, the meaningless plot and the really bad humor that's not funny.
Also, another case where the author doesn't call Jessica by her actual name (which is Watkins, not Watson.) I find it really irritating that the author can't be bothered to check her own characters' names and make them consistent. It's also not just one book where she has messed this up, IT'S MULTIPLE BOOKS!!!
There was also the little booboo of the nightclub that Betsy inherited. Monique was the vampire that had the nightclub, not the librarian Marjorie. Another thing that the author didn't bother to double check before releasing her book. Are the editors just not paying attention? How do these pretty big plot mistakes being published??
Also, Betsy labels everything "Property of Nick Barry", I'm assuming that it also another stupid author error since Dick doesn't seem to be mad about it, so probably not a joke. Also a few lines down, Betsy has a "Property of Dick Barry" label stuck to her leggings. At this point the author is just typing as fast as she can, errors and all to get these books out the door. Yikes...
1.5 out of 5 stars, almost done.

I do believe the author is under some sort of chemical influence. Her writing is getting more and more disjointed. I think she is trying too hard to be flippant and light-hearted. Unfortunately her attempts at humor are a rehash of the same old jabs aimed at Betsy and lost trains of thought. I am tired on Betsy constantly being called stupid by herself and everyone around her.

Nick/Dick's explanation as to why he doesn't like to be called Nick is also flawed since he has always wanted to be called Dick in this timeline (as explained in another book) due to there are other Nicks in the family... so being called Dick was easier. He didn't know about his being Nick in the other timeline... so he couldn't have been put off by the name due to being unhappy with his willingness to give up on Jessica so easily when labeled as Nick. This diatribe was, of course, followed by Betsy's self flagellation for her continued mucking with his name.

Would I recommend the series... probably not, yet, I continue to read the series... so I must see something in it. Perhaps I am just too stubborn to stop.

Another awful book filled with absolute crap for fillers...like Betsy, while in a conversation with others, goes off into lala land and thinks to herself about other extremely stupid things for like 3 pages and babbles to herself while saying nothing that makes sense or that I care to read. (I've been skipping whole pages when I come to these so I don't have to read it) This happens quite frequently and its frustrating that it does nothing for the storyline or in the very least, something to make us smile or laugh. Its like she needed a certain amount of words and didn't have enough of a plot to get there so she just put a bunch of random, nonsensical crap in place of a story. I can't wait to be finished with this series, I've been dreading reading lately with these and I hate that I'm not enjoying it but I will push on! I don't have the 15th book and no way in hell will I pay for this. I will be done with the series after this unless Amazon or the author has a deal where I can get it for free.
