Plain and intelligent heiress Beatrice Chaswell could hardly believe her luck when the incredibly handsome and kindly Earl of Faulconer, Gabriel Baxtor, actually began to court her. And in no time at all, the dashing earl had won Beatrice's heart. But Beatrice's joy soon turns to ashes when she discovers on her wedding day that Gabriel is actually a fortune hunter, and that he has married her solely for her fortune. Angry and bitter, Beatrice turns against Gabriel, treating him with a coldness and disdain totally foreign to her warm nature.
This Regency romance started out with an unusual beginning. The courtship completed, it was Beatrice and Gabriel's wedding day. It began with happiness and ended in anger. You see, Beatrice found out that Gabriel had married her for her inheritance. And to make matters worse, she overheard it through a conversation by two guests at the reception, not from her new husband.
Several months go by and their marriage is still a farce. Beatrice has low self esteem because she is on the heavy side and plain in looks. She thought Gabriel loved her and can't get past the pain of betrayal. The vicar who married them realizes they are in trouble and comes for a visit to try to make things right.
Gabriel knows he has committed a horrible wrong but he wants Beatrice to forgive him. In his eyes he was forced into an unwanted situation that his father and elderly brother caused before they passed away. He has deep feelings for her and desperately wants to make things right. Most of all he needs her forgiveness and want to make their marriage work.
With the vicar's help you slowly see the walls come down. It is so easy for anger to exist. With the pastor's help, Gabriel needs to win his wife by continually showing her kindness and patience. He finally learns he did have a choice and that he truly loves his wife. He 'woos' her while using patience.
Beatrice learns to forgive her husband if she is going to avoid a bitter life. He shares his childhood and what put him into his predicament. All the while, the feelings they share chip away at the resentment. She finds herself the center of his existence and he earns her love. This is the second book in the 'Vicar Humbly' series but it is an easy stand-alone read. A PROPER MARRIAGE is the first, A CONVENIENT MARRIAGE is the second and A SCANDALOUS MARRIAGE completes the trilogy.

Beatrice is not the normal Regency heroine. She lacks confidence, and of the three books in this series by Debbie Raleigh, this is the weakest. However, that being said, if you read the others, this one is a must. The characterization of Gabriel Baxter is strong and believable.
I thought this was a really sweet story. I liked that it starts with our couple already married. Beatrice discovers on her wedding day that her new husband had actually married her for her large dowry, and not for love. She is devastated and instantly puts up walls and punishes him by being cold and distant. Gabriel actually really cares for his wife and it was sweet to see how hurt he was and how he wanted to win her over. The story moves along quickly and it was a fun read.
Content: Clean, PG. Any intimacies are behind closed doors.
Reading Order: Book One: A Proper Marriage Book Two: A Convenient Marriage Book Three: A Scandalous Marriage
The second book in the Vicar Humbly series. I really liked Gabriel's character. He was a strong man with a good heart, who was patient and loving. Beatrice's character was good, but she was really unsure of giving her heart away again after she found out it was a marriage of convenience, as the title states. The fact that the characters really did care for one another made the angst and longing for each other more interesting, however.
She has an obscenely large dowry and wants to be wed for her, not her money. He likes her but desperately needs her money, only she doesn't know until after she had said "I do." Married in name only, the couple barely tolerates each other until the pastor comes to play cupid. It was a cute story. I liked that the "hero" wasn't perfect and the "heroine" was a strong, smart, opinionated lady!
Nice little romance story. Haven't read Zebra Romances before so I wasn't sure how steamy it would be. Only mildly, non-descriptive steaminess between a married couple, so pretty clean. Probably best for 18+ though.
One of my favorite Romance novels. When I culled my romance section I just couldn't get rid of it. I love the characters and the story. It's become my go-to story for a feel good moment, which means I reread it quite a few times.
