It is rare among elves to have more than one soulmate. To find one in a shapeshifting drake is unheard of. Even if they face opposition at every turn, at least the three of them have... well, not each other.
Self-exiled elvish healer, Cúraniel, faces the ultimate balancing the needs of one soulmate, the charming, elvish king, Celebel, with the possessive rage of the other, the legendary Red Dragon, Rafael. Once their greatest bane, when a new war threatens the very existence of the elvish people, they must rely on Rafael’s might to survive.
Celebel wants Cúraniel to conform and the Dragon to cooperate. Rafael wants to murder Celebel and steal her away. Cúraniel wants them both to stop fighting. They must all brave the horrors of war, the disapproval of society, and the unresolved trauma of one big, angry drake.
“Silver Star, Red Dragon” is a dark romantic fantasy.

Long time coming review, a year give or take. (kept taking side quests) 6/14/2025 I’m in love with this melody (story). First of all, it is very ethereal of the characters to refer to a story or anecdote as a song or melody. The lore and character-forward storytelling are beautiful, and the world-building just the same. This is a dark, high fantasy tale, with great dark humor, heavy spice, and some very interesting characters. Cúraniel, a beautiful nudist elf, finds herself having not one, but two soulmates: Celebel and Rafael (don’t let the drake see I put his name second). Problem is these two soulmates of hers just can’t seem to see eye to eye; here’s to hoping they can come to terms and make Cúraniel’s dreams come true. I love how unique her relationship is with each of her soulmates. They are both so different yet amazing in their own way. I say “amazing” because Rafael is dauntingly amazing. This drake is morally black, with a long list of “how are you even allowed to be out in the world?” Huge red flags, but still, there is something about him that Cúraniel (and I) can’t help but love. (And not just his anatomically correct drake parts. I just know there is more to this dragon, and hopefully we get to see it in future books.) Celebel is just as great. I love his devotion to Cúraniel, especially in the bedroom. I’m obsessed with these characters and the overall series, the plot is heavy and the twists are heavier, with battles that left me on an anxiety-ridden cliffhanger. I mean, yes, horrible, but also… do they have to be this dramatic? Poor Cúraniel. Read the TW/CW. this series is heavy on mature sexual content and dark themes.
This book had me interested right away from the cover to the blurb. I downloaded this for free during the dark romances stuff your Kindle event. The beginning had me hooked, I was slightly frustrated to see the book keep jumping back and forth between past and present at first but got used to it. I was really surprised by how long the book was. In all honesty, it could have been a bit shorter. I knew going in there was going to be more than one love interest, which I was totally fine with, I like multiple love interests and reverse harem. I will say I’m picky, and they can be hard to write well. The problem for me is when I don’t like one of the ML’s and in this case, I really disliked Celebel. From very early on, I could tell I wasn’t vibing with the second ML. I didn’t help that the chemistry, history, and dynamics with Raphael were so well done, and I just wanted to keep reading scenes with just them. I honestly could care less about the second male lead. For me personally I need so much more from the Prince and it could be because he was such the antithesis of Raphael which you think would be charming and refreshing, which is what the story was going for but he just came off as an entitled narrow minded and young. Which in-turn made me not love the plot as a whole because I didn’t really understand why she followed him back to court when she left in the first place. She seems to chalk it up to help save her people, but honesty, they are a bunch of snooty asshole too, and she should have stayed in her tree, yes the battle might have come to her but Rafael would have swooped in and saved her. I feel like a whole lot of nothing happened in the latter half of the book . This book is so long, but nothing really get resolved, they just keep having little battles with this big bad enemy, but it just doesn’t really move the plot forward. There is a second book, but I still wanted something to have been resolved in book one. Either finding out who the true enemy is or what their objectives are. I very much disliked Feanim and didn’t really care about any of the other elves besides Curaniel. If I’m a 100% honest, the character I really loved was Raphael. He stole the show for me, he had some lines that were amazing. I was a bit frustrated that Curaniel and Raphaels relationship didn’t really progress as much as I hoped in an almost 600-page book. I know his reasons, and I respect them, but I just wanted them to grow more together by the end. This book has a lot of awesome ideas. I feel rating and reviews are subjective, and my ratings are usually my own feelings on how I liked the book. I do feel this author has great ideas and can definitely write, but for me personally, this book didn’t knock it out of the park for me personally.
Thank you to the author for allowing me access to this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
« Well. I’d claimed I wasn’t drawn to danger, but there was something deeply, perversely thrilling about being with someone who could crush me like a butterfly wing. »

What a debut for C.A. Chaplin.
We follow Curaniel, Rafael, and Celebes and their evolving relationship with their newfound soulmate bond.
I would describe this book as dark high fantasy romance. The worldbuilding is quite heavy at times. A very complex, detailed world with history and legends for all beings. The powers of each species are interesting to learn about, even within the elves or the dragons.
I loved our main characters. Curaniel deals with a lot emotionally. She’s a sexy little vixen too, I think we’d be great friends. Celebes has this regal feel to him, knowing his role in the elvish community. But he still has a little devilish side. Whereas Rafael is the complete opposite, a true beast in form and character, with the smallest soft spot for Curaniel. Not to mention the trauma and the way Curaniel and him are willing to go step by step over a lifetime to get to where they both can. Yet they all have this layer of vulnerability as well as trauma. The characters are well done, they feel multi-faceted.
I know there aren’t teams. I love both Celebes and Rafael. But my heart does beat a bit faster with our Dragon.
But man oh man, do these males know how to make a girl scream. Good for Curaniel. Girly is having her best time within the sheets.
Can’t lie, I did stay for the romance at some points.
As for the plot, it did feel surprisingly quite light when looking back on it. There is a war between the elves and the bad guys (I cannot for the life of me remember how to spell their names). Add to that the long hateful history between the elves and the dragons. But we still don’t understand why there is this war. Other than two battles, not much happens with this enemy. We did get a lot of tension within the elf kingdom with the dragons, but no resolution or progress.
As for the side characters, I cannot for the life of me differentiate between all the elves. Except for Curaniel’s friend from the hill, Celebel’s friend who hated Curaniel. But I have no issue with the dragons. Might just be because of the names, but maybe because we did end up with a lot of characters with similar roles at some point.
Overall, this is a good debut, the story is intriguing, and the romance addicting. I’m excited to see how the author continues the story as well as the evolving bonds between our three main characters. Can’t wait for more banter and spice.

So this book handles soulmates/soulmate conflict amazingly, balances goofy (and much enjoyed aside from one scene) romance elements with solid fantasy lore, and really works. It does have a cliffhanger. I am eager for book 2!
(No spoiler review) High fantasy with elves, dragons, magic, multiple soulmates, on-page explicit spice, and more. As I expect with high fantasy, world-building is extensive, including cultures that clash and politics. Check out the front matter for trigger warnings, a pronunciation guide, and the gorgeous world map!
One of my favorite things about this book is how much the author loves the main characters, Cúraniel, and the MC, Rafael—the care taken with them is incredible. Their relationship feels very real to me as an ND reader, and when they are on the page, it's hard to stop reading. Spice is frequent and well-spaced throughout this book without feeling redundant and revitalizes sluggish spots. How many ways can you have sex with a drake and an elve? Plenty!
Trigger warnings for this book are extensive and necessary—read them. While dark romantic fantasy, it's not pitch black, so I think many will enjoy it.
The pacing of this novel was challenging for me to get through as an AuDHD'er. The first chapter hooked me hard, and I expected I would be able to read this book quickly, but then the pace became sluggish for the first thirty percent. I do not like to DNF books, must finish, but I thought about giving up during that first chunk. I'm glad I didn't. If you love the deep conversational world and relationship development, you won't mind the first 30%, but if you need a plot or high character friction to hold your attention... it will be hard. It picked up once the FMC and her second soulmate returned to civilization, and the drakes swept in, and I happily read the rest.
I love Raphael and Cúraniel. I love Cúraniel's fierce sense of self, body positivity, and awareness of others. And I love all of Raphael's baggage, his slow burn, and hot temper. They took center stage for me.
— I was given a complimentary ARC of Silver Star, Red Dragon and wanted to rate/review
High fantasy is not what I read most but I really enjoyed this book, big and complicated world, but in a good way.
Liked that it's very obvious that the main characters are not human, the elfs reminds me of Tolkien elfs. I offen get the feel from a lot of fae and elf in books that they are just humans with long ears but this didn't give me that at all. The culture, demeanor, perception of time, morals and body limitations all gave me a clear non-human feel and the same can be said about the drakes.
Really liked the start of the book with the jumping times, interesting solution for the story I haven't seen before.
Celebel annoyed the shit out of me from time to time and I did hope a little Rafael would just eat him(just a nibble maybe) but he was crucial as a catalyst for the story and he did grow on me towards the end.
Curaniel also annoyed me(in a good way though) but also was different from a lot fmc with her sometimes questionable judgements and anarchist tactics about getting her soulmates together.
Rafael is a really complex character that I still don't feel I truly know but really what to pop the hood open on and look at what's inside.
The smut was smutting 4/5 peppers when that was the focus.
I love this book. But what's not to love? It is a Dark Romantic Fantasy, it's why choose, it's character driven and there's monster smut.
The writing style is stunning, the world building is complex without going over your head and not once does the author treat the reader like they're stupid. The characters, including the side characters, are fully fleshed out and real. And the smut was very well written and so much fun.
My favorite character is Raphael. He's the Red Dragon, but he's more like that stray black cat you found in the street, nursed back to health and now only comes around when he wants five seconds of attention before clawing up your hand and running away again. Only to finally stick around when you ended up with another younger and slightly more naive Cat, but only to make your other cat life hell.
Favorites lines are "Aim me like an arrow at the hearts of you enimes and watch them die."
"Choose Coward."
"Do you have a magic pus*y?"
This book is amazing, I loved every moment of it and can't wait for the next book, especally with how this one ended.
If you're a selfish romance reader like me and want a little bit of everything from your MMCs, look no further. C.A. Chaplin has DELIVERED in this stunning dark fantasy romance debut about Curaniel, an elf who long ago forsook her heritage and moved to an isolated tree dwelling in the forest when society's pressures became intolerable to her (relatable). Despite her self-isolation, fate brings not one, but two soulmates to her doorstep for her to heal, and they couldn't be more different from one another. One is the dreaded Red Dragon, a fire drake named Raphael who is infamous among elves for death, destruction, and terror. If you like dark, brooding, seemingly irredeemable love interests whose one and only soft spot is for their lover, you will be just as obsessed with Raphael as I am. However, for those who (like me) can't tolerate too much darkness and need some sweetness too, Celebel provides a comforting contrast. Celebel is noble, charismatic, sensual, and in so many ways vibrates at the same frequency at Curaniel, providing her a sense of relief when her more prickly soulmate does something... dragony.
These soulmates are the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. Raphael's darkness unleashes Curaniel's own dark side, and the drama, nuance, and hurt/comfort in this relationship is just *chef's kiss.* The contrast of Celebel's sweetness and playfulness is soothing and heartwarming, but the tension between him and and his soulmate's *other* soulmate is omnipresent, making this a seriously "can't put down" sort of romance. Oh, and did I mention it's spicy? It's spicy, inventive, and somehow balances the heavy spice with something like slow burn but better? Trust me on this.
Aside from the DELICIOUS romance in this book, C.A. Chaplin does a marvelous job with the main plot and her fantasy worldbuilding. For it is not just love and romance that brings these three characters together, but a mysterious magical threat that Curaniel gets glimpses of in visions from the Night Mother. The threat brings together unlikely allies in Raphael (an ancient enemy of elves) and the elves themselves. Chaplin's worldbuilding is like a tapestry, with aspects of the world and the cultures in it woven in so beautifully and subtly as to make a rich, believable world without overloading you with information or doing too much telling. One example is the role that music and melody plays in Elvish culture, language, and worldview. It was so well done!
I just cannot say enough good things about this debut. It had tension, drama, spice, heavy emotion, and at times made me laugh out loud. It does end on a cliffhanger, but don't let that deter you. I know for sure that I'm not going to forget this story any time soon. It's seared in my brain and I can't wait for more from this author!
To end, a favorite quote, just for funsies: "You blighting, maggot-ridden pustule of rotted, putrid, harpy bile! May your teeth grow inwards, to gnaw your organs from the inside!" Runner-up: "FLEE, LITTLE ELVES. FLEE OR DIE." And a heartwarming one: "Oh, beloved. You alone, in all the world, worry for my safety."
Silver Dragon, Red Star is the tale of an introverted elf being annoyed that she has to put on pants and leave her comfortable treehouse in order to keep her rude dragon boyfriend from beating up her hot elf boyfriend. I, too, would rather wear nothing but pajamas for the next 84 years, so I found her reticence deeply relatable.
FINALLY, a romantasy that knows what I want. So often this genre sacrifices interesting worldbuilding so that it can focus on a romance that I don't care about all that much anyway. Not this one! The world is fully developed and calls out to my nerdy little high fantasy loving heart while also being deeply spicy. There were times when the, hrm, descriptions of certain activities made me question the anatomical desirability of specific acts, but I'm not here to judge. ;)
I'm suspicious of morally grey love interests in general--a lot of them seem to get redemption arcs they don't earn. Rafael is morally grey, but that's never in question. Curaniel's general sentiment is "he's dangerous and ill-tempered, and I'm into it." I can respect that. I would not want to be in this relationship, but dang did I enjoy reading about it. Curaniel is a spicy little pepper and I love that for her. This isn't exactly a why-choose, but it's hardly a healthy poly relationship, and never once claims to be. The tone tends a little toward the darker end of the romance spectrum, but I wouldn't call it true dark romance. I also appreciated that any time anyone is like, "You're mine!" or any of that other patriarchal nonsense, Curaniel throws hands. I loved that she was a little morally grey in her own right.
For a book that's over 600 pages, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the pacing. In some sense, it's slow, but it felt earned. I follow the author on TikTok and knew that I was in for some atomical shenanigans, but I didn't expect to be as invested in the epic fantasy world surrounding the main romantic relationship(s). I enjoyed the heck out of this book and eagerly await more.
I received this book as an ARC and enjoyed it very much. My thoughts and ramblings are my own.
Dark Romantasy, Elven Politics, Dragons, and all the delicious worldbuilding.
I read this book within twenty four hours of my download. The last time I can distinctly recall being so enthralled by a book was in my teen years, were I suffered sleep deprivation in middle school to read the latest Harry Potter or LJ Smith Book. To ignite that feeling again as an adult, when I have historically not had much time to read, let alone lose myself to book.
The character building is phenomenal, I feel like I would love to just be around Cúraniel to learn about herbs and medicine. Even in the very beginning pages, she felt friendly, warm, and almost as she could exist in the physical world. Now for Rafael. Oh Rafael, the man that would burn the world down with probably very little motivation. There is little that can be said to deter me from finding Rafael a captivating male lead. I want to to know more about his history and his past, how he came to be the way he is when we mee t him in the book. Now onto Celebel, when we first meet him I was more concerned if our girl Cúraniel was wearing clothes to be perfectly honest. However back to our man here. He feels incredibly too posh for me, but I love the way he completely different than our male lead. I am horribly biased towards Rafael but I look forward to seeing how the relationship develops with all three.
The book as a whole is amazing for neurodivergence representation between the main cast and supporting cast. They all feel delightfully real to a point I would expect to run into them while ordering my coffee or at a medieval combat exhibition. As someone who is nonbinary seeing Nemohee was so affirming and I love Þem, from the way they speak and act. To just Þem existing. All star character goes to Nemohee with a close second going to the void flufflet.
Run don't walk to this book. I am still in the process of my reread but I am loving reading it again. I will be buying a special edition should it exist.
Silver Star, Red Dragon is a story that stretches across an enchanting and dangerous world just as much as it cozies up in warm rooms to luxuriate in the steamy connections of the characters inside.
I was so impressed that the entire story is told in first POV and successfully delivers the feel and ambience of a classic high fantasy world while interlacing some of the grittiest intimate scenes I’ve read. Elves, drake shifters, gods of old, and 😈. It’s got it all.
Cúraniel is our leading lady. She is thousands of years old, as elves are wont to be. She is also a bit of a rapscallion. We meet her millennia into a self-imposed solitude. She has her bower, her gardens, and her service to the Night Mother, providing healing to those who approach her hill.
Which has worked splendidly for her, until a bloodied hulk of a man shows up in the valley. Twice.
Soulbonds are an important part of elvish culture in this world. They can be forged with intention, or they are can occur naturally.
After thousands of years of living happily alone, what Cúraniel needs most is to find herself soulbound. To two different men. A god of carnage. And an elvish King.
I really enjoyed this read. I found it really fascinating to consider what the problems and desires of immortal species would be. How the lack of urgency around time and age change what is imortant.
There is also some really interesting play with morality. Because Rafael is inarguably a terror. And yet, Chaplin manages to bring in humanity around his sharp edges that make you want to root for him.
I found that the sensitive and darker material was handled with care, but I definitely suggest checking the content warnings on the author’s website. Some of the darker intimate play does get graphic. Think k!nk culture (not SA/dubcon).
It’s a wild ride. But it’s also heartfelt and carries the awe of a classic fanatsy tale inside its pages. If any of that catches your interest, I definitely recommend checking it out!
Silver Star, Red Dragon is a dark romantic love letter to the classic fantasy genre.
This book explores complexities in the multitudes, and the amount of love and care that C.A. has put into her characters and world building is absolutely astounding.
The trigger warnings are there for a REASON, this book delves into dark territory.
This book transcends genres, and puts dark romance right with classic epic fantasies in a way that I have never seen before. With complex politics and cultures, and intricacies into each character, there is nothing that is shallow about this book.
My heart is so full with epic fantasy fulfillment from this book. Elves, and dragons, and fae, and more. CA’s world building is beautifully described without a ton of info-dumping, and I felt like I was placed in the world right alongside Curaniel. CA manages to throw us into a society that is so far from human standards, but makes it totally believable. Her aged-up MCs feel their age, and not like a twenty year old thrown into a hundred-year-old body.
Yes, there is plenty of spice, but it is not gratuitous or unearned. This book is a poly romance. THIS HAS MONSTER SMUT the spice be spicing so again, check the TWs.
Cruraniel is our beautiful, luscious FMC who has turned away from elvish society and instead lives on her own as a healer for whoever can find her. She is empathetic, smart, and capable with having her own flaws. She makes mistakes, but is self-aware enough to admit to her own faults. *chefs kiss*
Rafael is a morally CHARCOAL MMC. He is also a dragon shifter (or a drake to be more specific), so his culture is wildly different than our own, and wildly different than the elves.
Celebel is the complete opposite of Rafael! He is easy-going and has a great sense of humor. He is wildly flirtatious and endearing.
The only issue I have with this book is that it leaves on a cliffhanger of the ages! I need more!
Dark fantasy High fantasy Romantic fantasy Shapeshifter Elves Soulmates Slow burn Fierce FMC Spice
Silver Star, Red Dragon is the first book in The Soulbound Song series.
Loved having both the pronunciation guide/vocabulary and map right at the beginning. Please check the trigger warnings be reading.
The world building was extensive and well written. I loved learning about the world, some of it’s history and politics.
The pacing was quite slow at the beginning. The book starts with action but after that it focuses heavily on introducing the characters and their backstories.
The FMC of the book is Cúraniel, self-exiled elvish healer. The book is told in her point of view. The other main characters are Rafael, the legendary red dragon and Celebel, a charming elvish prince.
The characters were well introduced and developed. Cúraniel is a great main character, she is fierce and self aware. I liked how Rafael’s past traumatic events affected him as a character.
The first part of the book contains two timelines, past and present. There were a few times when I was a bit confused of what was happening now and what had already happened in the past.
After the slower start, the pacing of the book gets faster and more action oriented towards the end. I personally enjoyed the character building at the beginning but it might be a lot for some readers.
Overall a really interesting read with complex characters, slow burn and interesting storyline.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
I've been highly anticipating the release of this book and was excited to get my hands on a copy. I was not disappointed.
I truly love the author's voice and style. The world building was perfect: richly detailed without bogging down the story. Every character was uniquely brought to life, even side characters. No stereotypes. No gender conforming roles. The three main characters, who were bound to each other whether they liked it or not, were so different, their personalities perfectly captured. I fell in love with each one easily. Favorite? So hard to choose!
As much as I wanted to rush through to get to action and spicy bits, I found myself taking my time and savoring this beautiful world the author created and the relationships between the characters. It's a divine piece of chocolate I let slowly dissolve on my tongue.
Speaking of tongues…the spicy scenes were equal parts fun and sweat inducing. Have a fainting couch handy. Swooning is imminent.
Honestly, this story has so much to offer. Pan/polyam elves. Drakes of all shapes and sizes. A voidlet cat. A harrowing war. The MC finding out she has two soul mates. Characters dealing with trauma and grief. Snarky humor. Magic that is deeply ingrained in each being and the very world itself. Nuerodivergent and disability rep done right. A faceless, terrifying enemy. An MC facing impossible choices. Sex positivity. Nigh immortal beings dealing with everyday issues.
This is a dark romantic fantasy but it is really so much more. I can't wait to read the next book.
I was lucky enough to find the author on Tik Tok and after seeing her posts about the book I was DESPERATE to read it.
The writing is phenomenal, the way the author has subtly given the reader context and built the world throughout the book is incredible. Her attention to detail is so impressive, weaving in bits of lore and society in a way that isn't just listing facts to the reader but incorporating them into the story.
The characters are so well written, and the way they are developed is perfectly paced. You learn about the romantic interests along with the main character in a way that feels natural.
The story is a perfect balance of romance to plot, I always find myself frustrated with books similar to this because there's either way too much focus on the romance, or way too much focus on the plot and this book is such a perfect balance. I never felt like either was dragging on because they were so perfectly intertwined.
*Spicy Scenes Review*
This book is SPICY. On one side it leaves you so desperate to see development within one character and perfectly depticts how complex trauma can affect relationships. On the other side it gives you the feeling emotional safety and relief.
The book also has a perfect balance of emotional investment and sex for sex sake.
I cannot sing this books praises enough, I was looking forward to it for a few months after finding out about it and the author absolutely delivered.
If you like dark fantasy, dragons, borderline irredeemable MMCs, complicated and fascinating world building then this book is for you! This is an MFM and toes the line well. Both the MMCs suit the FMC perfectly. For me personally, this was more of a 3 star because it didn’t vibe with me. But giving it any less than a 4 is an injustice to the phenomenal writing. This author clearly poured their heart into this book and it shows. The linguistics were fascinating as was the elf lore. It reminded me a lot of Divinity: Original Sin (one of my favorite video games) the politics surrounding the elves and the dragons kept me interested. Check the triggers! Dark fantasy means DARK. And ultimately, it was too dark for me. I thought I could handle it, but I don’t like feeling a sense of hopelessness when I’m reading. The overall message I got from this book was the question, “How far will you forgive the people you love?” I was just not the target audience. If you like more light-hearted fantasy, this is not the book for you. The smut was written very well, and if you like monster smut, pick up this book! This is definitely a 5 star read, but not MY 5 star read. This book is an incredible feat of artistry from the work that went into the world to the linguistics. But even if this book wasn’t for me, it got me out of a writing slump, so thank you!
Firstly, I will admit that I am incredibly biased. Second, my bias was still blown out of the water by SSRD.
C.A. did an incredible job crafting the first part of this story. Writing and rewriting it to make it the absolute fantasy romance perfection that is it. The characters are what I love the most, but all aspects were honed to perfection. The world building is phenomenal, including some incredibly in-depth thought into methods of communication, and locations I swear I could see in my mind in 4-k. Now back to the characters. I absolutely love Cúraniel. she is independent and no wilting flower of an FMC, with two soulmates that make ME want to pull my hair out she needs all the resilience she can muster. She is a skilled healer before anything else and her depth of knowledge (along with C.A.'s incredible actual knowledge of plants/rocks/basically everything) stole my heart away. When it comes to her soulmates, I must admit that I am totally head over here in love with the sexy elf (Celebel) but the red dragon is a LEGEND.
Also, C.A. handles mental health and neurodiversity rep with nuance and humanity that is so rare.
This book is incredibly worth the read if you are a fan of some romance with your fantasy or incredible fantasy world building. C.A. knocked it out of the park with her first novel, I look forward to reading the rest.
What a magnificent start to an AMAZING story. The characters... I love them all! The expanse of time of the story and the growth of the characters completely captured me. The way this was written was also very well done, I very much enjoyed that Chaplin knew their readers are intelligent and I like that that nothing felt over explained or made to be 'dumbed down' which was very refreshing to me. The world building was immaculate, I felt as though I was actually there. The plot was well paced and the twists were twisting but in ways that seemed more realistic so I can't say I was surprised by how the story went but I wasn't fully expecting it either, it was very well done. The only other thing that I feel should be noted about this tale is.... the SPICE... if you are close minded, don't want spice, and can't keep an understanding of the world built and the characters themselves then this story isn't for you... but for those all for the spice, the taboo, the deep down debauchery that spice can contain... I highly recommend! This has it all and is very very well done.... I fell off that cliff at the end and need more ASAP!
Like many people, fantasy is the genre that started my love of reading. Escaping into complex worlds with well thought out characters is an escape I needed in my youth, and I still use that method now as an adult. Silver Star, Red Dragon was not what I was expecting. I expected your typical fae romance, and instead I got completely transported into a world that was seamlessly created by out author. I was immediately thrown into the characters world, introduced to our main character who’s a powerful healer. This book is full of fated mates, why choose, slow burn, some of the most creative spicy scenes I’ve ever read, and a fantastic story to boot! The spice and story are thoughtfully written, with good balance.
The beginning was a bit slow for me, personally; but I found myself truly engrossed by the story as they found themselves setting out on a journey. If you like to see a world built before your eyes, and intense character development; this is a story for you.
Disclaimer: I did receive this book in a PR box from the author. This is my voluntary and honest review.
When I first received this book, I was surprised by how thick it is. But honestly, I shouldn't of been so intimidated by that because once you get into the reading in the world, it literally just flies by. The characters were so real and interesting. The world building was definitely there and kept you engaged and immersed in the world. I really loved the different representations within this novel as well. We had a polyamorous relationship. We had queer characters. We just had a whole bunch of really fun and interesting dialogue and mythology.
I was definitely more partial to the dragon character than the Elven character. But that is just personal preference and has nothing to do with the story. So I did find those particular timelines more interesting. I really love our female main character. She was so strong and independent while also being sassy and lovable. The queer normative world was absolutely so well done
The cliffhanger at the end of this book was just what I needed to drive me to the second book. I cannot wait till the author releases information and a release date. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series and cannot wait to continue.
My first DNF for the year. I only got as far through it as I did because I was reading it for a Readathon prompt but after struggling to pick it up for 8 days, I decided it’s better to switch to a different book to complete the prompt.
The author aims for a floral, High Elf language in the book, which is fine but then will switch to crass words during the spicy scenes that are incongruent with the flow of the story. This book wouldn’t be so bad if she just stuck to a similar style throughout the story.
While reading, I kept asking myself if I actually cared about the characters (no, I don’t) and would I bother reading further in the series if it came out (also no) so there wasn’t any point for me to continue with this one.
THAT CLIFFY AT THE END — I FEEL AS MURDEROUS AS RAFAEL HIMSELF.
This book caught my eye when the author read some of their editor’s comments on TikTok to promote their upcoming book. The comments made me giggle and I immediately applied for an ARC when it became available. I was pleasantly surprised that I received an ARC as I am not what most would call an “ARC reader” unless it’s a beloved author. Let’s just say this ARC made me a super fan and I now have to add C.A. Chaplin to the beloved author list.
Silver Star, Red Dragon is something I have never read before. I dare say this book is the first of it’s kind. And if it’s not, well…. Then I need more suggestions like this, STAT. I was stunned with how into this book I was. I knew for the snippets it sounded like it would pique my interests but if only I could read for a living. Y’all have no IDEA how much I glanced at my kindle while at work. Knowing DAMN well I wouldn’t be able to read. That’s the sort of hold this book had on me.
I loved this dark erotic yet also high fantasy book. Morally grey characters are like heroine to me. And the FMC and one of the MMCs gave me all the morally grey character building sustenance I needed for a year. The author did an incredible job on their characters. For me, this was EXCELLENTLY done and the perfect amount to feel absolutely devastatingly connected to the characters. I believe this is the author’s debut novel but they write as if they are a seasoned author with many books on intricate fantasy world building. I enjoyed the mystery of the past/ present in the first part of the book. It made me eagerly consume the pages as a hungry dragon.
Another thing I loved about this was the dark humor. Perfectly timed and used to ease harsh situations. I adored Cúraniel and her mischievous side especially when she got to court. Also can we talk about how she is a self 👏🏽aware 👏🏽 queen? Gosh, such a refreshing thing to read a character that acted their age. (Cúraniel is an older elf that was self banished from elvish society, living out her cottage core dreams while gardening naked— same girl, same.)
Sometimes too much spice in spicy books is just the same thing over again- WELL THATS NOT THE CASE HERE. Every scene with Rafael had me swooning. I understand that Demi-sexual May not be an identity that all creatures in the fantasy world are aware of, but there was definitely representation of it in Rafael’s character. I just loved how it was done, especially with Raf’s trauma and how everything was handled. Gods, it was perfection.
This was my first time reading about two love interests at the same time. I haven’t explored much into polyamorous territory so please forgive me if that is not the correct term to use…I thoroughly enjoyed how the FMC had two different types of relationships with both MMCs. Cel was more emotionally mature and accepting of the two soulmate situation, where as Rafael was exactly what I imagine a possessive dragon would be like. I know it’s fantasy but I found it to be very realistic.
The action that was in the book had me reading this as if a movie was playing in my head. Great ferocious beasts fighting alongside elfs and brave Cel fighting off the enemies, it was so entertaining and left me wanting more (which is unusual lol).
Anyways please read this book if this sounds interesting to you as it did to me. Lastly, CA CHAPLIN HOW DARE YOU DO US WITH THAT ENDING. I EAGERLY AWAIT THE SEQUEL.
Things I loved about this book: *fascinating worldbuilding, with lots of thought given to how elven origins would affect their language and culture *A confident FMC who is comfortable with her body and her sexuality *Exploring the difficulties a soulmate bond might cause instead of just using it for insta-love *Consensual spice and kink (I'd say three peppers, but it might be four or five for some readers) *Both external and internal conflict, including a fascinating and complex war *Nemohee *Clean, smooth writing that still maintains the personality of the narrator and just one 1st POV *Rafael's tongue
Things I didn't love: *How long I will have to wait for the sequel
What words can I say to describe the amazing world that Chaplin has developed in Silver Star, Red Dragon?
I had the pleasure of beta reading for Chaplin and I was constantly blown away the more I read.
I am very choosey when it comes to reading high fantasy, especially when I am learning a beautiful new world and immersing myself in it. I am not a fast reader so choosing the right high fantasy book matters.
THIS is the type of high fantasy that I enjoy. It's a "must devour" sort of novel. I learned new words, dove into a beautiful world full of culture and magic. The way the world is crafted has me feeling like I could visit there! It feels genuine and authentic while still maintaining the whimsy of fantasy.
Our FMC Cúraniel is stunning, stubborn, and sexy. Yes the 3 S's. And I love her for that. Add in sumptuous, sultry, and strong while we're at it! She exhibits strength not in a "I can fight with my hands" sort of way. Her strength is through her words, her power, and her confidence. She's a plus sized elf who enjoys gardening in the nude (um I'd love to do that if I didn't have a brown thumb). She isn't afraid to ask for what she wants and she admits, albeit reluctantly, when she's wrong.
Our MMC Rafael is everything we want in a morally grey (eh more like charcoal) character. He will quite literally burn the world for Cúraniel, no questions asked. Was their connection unintended? Sure. Did it take him time to come to terms? Absolutely. But the beauty was watching the both of them come together and grow together. He's frustratingly comedic and will have you snort-laughing. But you'll also feel so deeply for what he's gone through to get to the point he is at with his dove. His DOVE. Like swoooon.
Last but not least, our MMC Celebel. AH. Handsome, smooth talking, cinnamon roll to the max. A switch and not ashamed to bottom (and does so in such a wonderful way). He's in touch with how he feels and his connection with Cúraniel is fast and burns beautifully. The dynamic she shares with him is vastly different than her dragon and that is exactly what she needs. Celebel is endearing and a relentless flirt. He comes to terms with accepting the unique situation that is Cúraniel and the dragon at her side.
This book is a wonder. The blend of fantasy, spice, and even easy to understand use of dialogue has formed a work of art. It never felt like a drag to read. I was engaged the whole time!
Beautifully written characters - ✅ Superb world building and extensive lore - ✅ HOT HOT HOT and spicy romance - ✅ Silver Star, Red Dragon was amazing and it gripped me from the start. It was so easy to get into the story and the characters were so well written and engaging. A very strong first novel in this debut series, one which I highly recommend. If you are looking for a mixed genre book with a LOT of spice, maybe some you didn't even know you liked, you can't go wrong with Silver Star, Red Dragon. Read the content warnings, people!
I was fortunate enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this very spicy dark fantasy. The writing is whimsical and rife with magic, the characters are compelling (and occasionally infuriating lol). The spice is SPICY. If you’re a fan of both Tolkien-y fantasy and spicy romance this is the book for you! Be sure to check the content warnings. The world building is rich, the characters diverse and interesting, and it combines all of my favorite genres into one epic story. I cannot wait for book 2!
I went into this book both excited and apprehensive. I’d been following the author’s path to finishing it for months and was excited to meet her characters. At the same time, I struggle with high fantasy’s overly descriptive nature. Thankfully, the plot progressed quickly along with the world development, and what a world. There were some elements that became repetitive for me, and there is a significant plot pause. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the world, and the spice…and she’s spicy!
Author C.A. Chaplin has created a rich, expansive world populated with fully fleshed characters. Her writing sucks you in immediately and you feel transported to a very real other world. Her men are dark, seductive, and hot hot hot! Her women are no retiring maids, but true heros in their own rights. Why choose?
Do yourself a favor and pick up Silsver Star, Red Dragon and be prepared to be transported.
I loved this book! The characters have so much depth; sweet, funny, dark and all flawed in their own ways. Even the side characters managed to evoke feeling. It was so refreshing to read something where not everyone is stereotypically ‘perfect’ but rather lovely in their uniqueness. I also love a FMC who embraces her sexuality. The story was gripping and the writing was amazing. Cannot wait for the next book!
Omgggg, you guys—this book is a MUST read!! I’m typically a contemporary/paranormal romance reader but this grimdark romantasy has me in a chokehold! The world-building, the cultures, the societal norms—all are so well thought out and presented to us in a way that felt natural, and the plot! Full of drama, blood, intrigue, and secrets—I am so eager to see where our heroes go from here! Also the spiceeee—top tier!
