Desolace #5

Cemetery Hill

Rate this book
After a raging, intense battle with a large contingent of the Black Knight's minions, Edward and the remaining members of his group take shelter in an abandoned inn to lick their wounds. Formulating a plan to chase after the demonic creatures in order to eradicate the threat of a reoccurrence, Brian and Katie head off, leaving their werewolf companion to keep watch over their leader as he attempts to heal.

Following the trail of the railroad tracks, they discover more than they were bargaining for; the retreating demons spring an ambush on the unsuspecting duo as they ascend toward the pinnacle of the mountain. Surviving the surprise attack and, for the time being, eliminating the immediate threat, Brian and Katie continue to climb. As they reach the termination point of the railroad tracks, they find themselves staring at the gaping entrance to a cave.

Determination fueling them, they step through the opening, making sure there aren't more of the tiny demons regrouping inside. As they enter, a blood red veil of light falling over their vision. The expansive chamber is adorned with row upon row of enormous, wooden crosses, some of which have nude prisoners shackled to them. Could this be the place Julie had referred to as Cemetery Hill? If so, what were the odds of her still being alive? Would Katie find her best friend in this chamber of horror, or was she too late?

I spent most of my youth in rural Ohio and began writing stories at an early age. Many of these early attempts at story-telling were inspired by mysteries, such as those found in the old Hardy Boys books and the cartoon antics of Scooby Doo. As I entered my teenage years I began to drift away from writing stories, instead picking up my pencil to compose lyrics for heavy metal songs because my new dream was to become a musician. That vision remained hopeful for many years after my high school graduation, but like most dreams of this nature it died out as I became older.

After working several menial jobs through the years that followed, my thoughts again began to turn toward writing books. Inspired by my favorite author, Stephen King, I took an online creative writing course and slowly began to develop my skills. In late 2010 I was given a violent shove, both by the job market (which was horrible to say the least, and still is) and by the persistent encouragement of close friends, to pick up my pen and begin writing again.

In early 2012, I gave birth (that's almost what it felt like) to my very first published book, Desolace. Finally having a completed novel in my hand was the best feeling in the world for me, giving me a sense of accomplishment I had waited a lifetime for. Since then it has gotten easier for me with each book I have published. Since the initial release of Desolace, I have published twelve more novels as well as an omnibus edition ebook of the entire Desolace series. Currently, The Art of Living is in the development stage.

This series is FOR ADULT READERS ONLY and MUST be read IN ORDER !!! The first book is Desolace. The second book is Haven (Desolace). The third book is Outpost 13 (Desolace). The fourth book is City of the Dead (Desolace). The companion book is Destined for Darkness. This is the fifth book. If you read them outside of the publication order you miss a lot and risk major confusion.

Every book delves deeper into the mysteries of Desolace and the portals to alternate Earths. This is well illustrated in this book more than the previous ones. There is only one Desolace but many Earths. The portals never link to the same Earth after they close so it begs the question will Katie ever be able to return home?

I was enthralled quickly by this series and continue to be more so with each and every book. Edward and Katie continue to grow as people and leaders as they face tragedy and loss at every turn. Nothing is entirely what it seems anywhere on Desolace. The surprises are endless for our intrepid band of adventurers so there is never a dull moment!

Barnes blends action an adventure seamlessly with fantasy and horror making for an intense and satisfying reading experience. I would recommend this series to paranormal mystery fans as well a fantasy lovers and horror buffs. It truly is a genre bending adventure and I cannot wit to read more!!!

***This series is suitable for adult readers ONLY!!!

Cemetery Hill is book five in the horror/fantasy Desolace series. In the first four books Katie has joined a team to help rid the world of Desolace of the evil that has captured and enslaved many of it’s inhabitants. The team has grown and it has also lost a few along the way. Currently the group consists of Katie, Edward the White, Jack the werewolf, Amber the ghost, and Brian the shaaman. In the beginning of book 5 they are taking refuge in an abandoned Inn to nurse their wounds and figure out where their journey should go from there. In this small abandoned town they meet another new foe and try to take on a group of the demons with Brian’s holy fire. In following and destroying the demons they find the most terrifying sight after traveling through yet another portal. Will this revelation lead them to the victory they are striving for or the doom they fear?
I just wrote that first part and then read it and thought “when I summarize the stories like that it makes it sound like it isn’t very exciting, but believe me, if you are a fan of horror, fantasy, or paranormal, you will like this series!
The character Katie has grown so much since the first book. She has gone from a giggling teenager to a wise warrior. Edward has gone from a serious no nonsense kind of wizard to a kind and compassionate friend. Katie and Edward obviously have feelings for each other despite their age difference, but the author stubbornly refuses to write them a romantic scene. Maybe when the story concludes, Mr. Barnes?? Do you have any idea how emotionally damaged I will be if these two don’t get at least some form of a happily ever after?? Ok back to the review….
With each book in this series a new enemy is revealed and new obstacles are put in their way. Each novel has gotten better than the last and the story is building to a big finish I can feel it. But what kind of ending is in store for this strange group of unlikely friends? I guess we’ll have to wait till the next book (or books) to find out.
If you haven’t read any of the books in this series and you like fantasy, and horror and any of the genres I listed above, you should really check it out. I give Cemetery Hill 5 stars. Even though one of my favorite characters was killed off in the worst way. Yes, I did cry. It was very sad.

Sure to keep you up at night! April 24, 2014

That Ending!! DOH! Well that was just mean! :P Here I was all wrapped up in the story, thanking Lucian for continuing on, when BAM! It's over! JUST KIDDING...he teases us with a sneak peek at the next book to come. But f.y.i. that still wasn't enough. Book 6 can not release soon enough! Fabulous job ensuring I will be getting little sleep between now & then.
Seriously, this series continues to intrigue me. It's so good!! I have enjoyed the main characters from the beginning as well as each new addition along the way. The scene is constantly changing keeping us on our toes. There are so many possibilities. I can't wait to see where we'll end up next. After reading Cemetery Hill it is killing me not knowing who will outwit whom. I'm voting for our resident wizard of course although that Black Night, as evil as he is, sure has a way of making us want to see more of him. I will be on the lookout for more great stories to come by Mr. Barnes.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I was saddened by the unexpected death in this story. And my mind can't help but want to put some kind of love between Edward and Katie! Maybe it's me and reading so much romance, but I sooo badly want the two of them to realize that they like each other. LOL What? Scary, horror stories have romance too... I don't know why but this whole time waiting for this book to come out, I thought this was the last one. So getting to the end and reading the cliffhanger the author leaves us with put the biggest smile on my face! I NEED the next book, like now! :) This is a must read!!!!

After reading Cemetary Hill I have only one thing to say: I can't wait for the next book! Lucian is the master of twists and turns. You never know where the story is headed or who will be the next to die. Edward and company seem to be nearing the end of their quest but are they really? After losing so much can Edward remain sane enough to see it through? Lucian leaves his reader guessing and only he knows the answer. This is a must read series for those of us who hate predictability in a book/series. Also for anyone who enjoys the horror genre in general. Take a chance on this up and coming author and you will not be disappointed.

I love this series, they do need to be read in order. A group of beings with supernatural abilities is on a mission. Throughout the series they face different obstacles and other supernatural objects. This series reminds me of The Dark Tower series. I can't wait to find out what their destination holds in the next book. WaAR

OMG, Cemetery Hill was a nail biter! It had action, suspense and mayhem. Its a wonder I didn't pass out from holding my breath so much. This may be my favorite book in the series. The ending left me sitting with my mouth gaped open. Cannot wait to read book 6.
