Alice Isn’t Running Anymore.Five years ago, mage private investigator Alice Worth escaped her grandfather Moses Murphy’s organized crime syndicate. Now, her grandfather’s war with local boss Darius Bell has drawn her out of hiding and put her in the crosshairs of two merciless crime lords. Her decision to intervene in their war has endangered everyone Alice cares about and threatens to destroy the life she’s built for herself, including her relationship with alpha werewolf Sean Maclin.
Meanwhile, Alice’s new case is the most dangerous of her career. Hired to find a missing child with a rare magical ability, she and her ghost sidekick Malcolm quickly become targets for the boy’s ruthless kidnappers. To stay alive and free from both Bell and Moses, she must rely not only on her growing powers but also her alliances with Sean’s pack and the Vampire Court.
When Alice’s conflicts with pack members turn violent and the Court betrays her, the truth becomes freeing the kidnapped boy and finding her place in the pack will cost Alice her secrets, her safety, and—if she isn’t careful—her life.

I fell under the spell…and nearly gave up on Alice
I started reading Heart of Stone and I thought that this story could be the turning point. I was already starting to compose (in my head) my email to Lisa Edmonds apologising for not being able to review her latest instalment. I was a bee's whisker away from DNF’ing…and it was all because I fell victim to magic.
See, dear old Alice Worth has been putting up barriers from the very beginning. At first, it was to protect herself from harm. Then, as the people closest to her broke down her barriers a smidgen, she started pushing them away to protect them. I got it. Well, I got it as much as I understood her hesitations. But, eventually, it started to annoy me as much as it was annoying the people around her.
Come on Alice, we’ve learnt already that you are not the only one with the power. You are not the only one who’s faced baddies and survived. You are not the only one who regrets their past. So, when dear old Alice AGAIN started pushing everyone away including SEAN, I decided enough was enough. How could she not see that something was not right?? If Sean and I could...even Malcolm knew. My dearly beloved Sean didn’t deserve this anymore. I nearly gave up…
Luckily, I gritted my teeth and carried on.
I should have realised that Lisa Edmonds was just playing with her readers. Heart of Stone ended up being the turning point but just not in the way I originally imagined. If anything, instead of feeling like I need things to be cleared and finished up, I need more. I had an hour left to read and I was literally twitching in my seat. I needed to see the fight play out, but I was also dreading Heart of Stone coming to an end.
We meet some new characters in this instalment, and I can tell they are quickly going to become favourites. Secrets have finally been revealed and I loved having that burden removed from my shoulders…I mean Alice’s shoulders. Alice finally comes face to face with her past and I was pretty proud of her standing her ground and not giving in. I was a little frustrated with the attacks she faced because of her relationship with Sean. It was even more frustrating that we didn’t get to “see” Sean go berserk on them.
Heart of Stone was pretty long and at times felt a little too long. I really couldn’t tell you a single word that I wanted to remove to make it shorter, though. Each battle, discussion and introduction were crucial to the storyline. My heart was pumping numerous times with all the emotions I felt throughout. I was extremely frustrated at Alice…then at the pack…then at Charles… Valas… Delila… Lily… Moses… Darius and NORA!!!!! If you didn’t get my emotions from that last one…I WANT TO SEE NORA DEAD! Sorry, about my extremely emotional outburst, but she really needed a bloody fire mage to scorch her to kingdom come.
I ended up loving Heart of Stone and I may even go so far as saying that it was my favourite in the series. Lisa Edmonds is a master of her craft and I loved every word she wrote. I’m emotionally attached to her characters and every battle they face, I feel like I’m standing right alongside them.
If you’re looking for an entertaining story packed with magic, paranormal characters you can't help but fall in love with, and a sigh-worthy romance, you can’t look past the Alice Worth series. I highly recommend and suggest…you need to start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.

✅ Magic and Cabal war ✅ Betrayals ✅ Pace ✅ Action ✅ Characters ✅ Romance ✅ Alice’s identity is finally revealed ✅ Pack drama ✅ Vampires, werewolves, and mages ❌ Recaps of previous events ❗️❗️Trigger warnings: death, attempted murder, blood, kidnapping, dangerous free-fall from a significant height
Moses Murphy’s Cabal is at war with Bell’s Cabal, and Alice finds herself in the middle of it when she realizes that the missing boy she was hired to find ended up in Bell’s hands because he is a powerful null. Alice knows what life awaits Aden as a powerful mage child in a cabal, and she is willing to do almost anything to get him out of Bell’s hands, even if it means putting her own life at risk. Sean’s pack is slowly warming up to Alice, but a few members continue to openly be opposed to their relationship, and they are now trying to get rid of Alice in any way they can.
There is action in this book, and many sub-plots tangled together, but the pace was good, and I found myself stuck in the “one more chapter” trap for most of the book. I listened to it on Audible but also downloaded the Kindle because it was quicker to read than listen to it, and I just needed to know what would happen next, when Alice would reveal her identity to Sean. And when they would realize that a member (or members) of the pack were working against them.
Alice changed a lot since the first book, thanks to Malcolm’s harsh honesty at times, and Sean’s patience and no-bullshit attitude. She reveals more secrets in this fourth book of the series, and we can see that her relationship with Sean is strong and meant to last. She trusts him with most of her secrets, and she stopped being scared of getting attached to him. She embraces her romantic life with him and is ready to take the next step in their relationship, even if it means getting out of her comfort zone. Alice still annoyed me at times, and there was one specific instance where I wanted to slap some sense into her, but overall, she grew on me, and I like her now.
I love angst and relationship drama, as long as it is well done, feels mature (no juvenile jealous bullshit, thanks), and is relevant to the plot. There was some drama between Sean and Alice in this book (no surprise here), and it was relevant to the plot, but it got almost too much at one point. Not in the sense that it was too angsty, because things can never be too angsty, but Alice's obliviousness to what was going on got me so frustrated, that I was tempted to skim just to get to the part where things were finally resolved and she could move on to the next problem on her never-ending list.
Malcolm continues to be the voice of reason, and it shows even more in this book. He never hesitates to tell Alice the truth, even when it's harsh, but he's also there to reassure her when she panics and gets afraid that Sean will see her as a monster if he learns of her secrets. Malcolm is the steady presence who's always there to tell her to calm the f*ck down and breathe, or that she should apologize because she's been an ass, and I love his fierce loyalty to Alice, and how much of a true and good friend he is.
One thing that did annoy me, especially since I was listening to this book and not reading it, are the long recaps of previous events. If you've made it to book 4, you should not need to be reminded of who Charles' enforcers are, what happened with Bell and Murphy in the third book, or why Delia and Jack don't like Alice. It annoyed me that I had to listen to those recaps on the first part of the book.
I don't know why but I felt like the ending was sorta anti-climatic. I had expected more. That said I liked that Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29, turns 30), a licensed private investigator, was more open, more willing to listen to others and most importantly treating her - never mind the hex - boyfriend Sean Maclin (42), werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack better. I just need more from Sean though. I want him to be more, more powerful, more dominant. I feel no... threat coming from him when he's up against someone. In my eyes, he's a bit weak for my taste. But that doesn't me I don't like him. I like him a lot. I just have a thing - yes I'm shallow - for powerful alpha males. What does bother me, however, is Alice's somewhat affection for Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of mostly treasures and secrets. I don't like him, at all. I don't trust him, nor do I like Alice's reaction to him. I feel like she kinda betrays Sean a bit with it.
Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Urban Fantasy (M/F) Series: - Series, Book Four. Love triangle? - Cheating? - HEA? - Favorite character? - Sean Maclin. Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes. Would I recommend this book/series? - Unsure. Will I read this again in the future? - No. Rating - 2.5 stars.
See, this is why I love UFs with strong characters. You actually get to see them grow to be that amazing person you're hoping to find. And the plot is getting interesting, ohh, how the tables have turned!
First read: 07/2019 - 5 stars Re-read: 09/2020 - still 5 stars!
I wasn't going to rate this book 5 stars. While still unsurprisingly awesome all in all, I didn't find it quite as flawless as the other books in this series, mainly due to Alice, who's been nothing but level-headed so far, being just a tad too angsty for my liking. BUT, Malcolm deserves an extra star all of his own, so... I guess this series' five-star streak goes on.
I just love how Edmonds always manages to pack her books chock-full of action, adding lots of little side-plots and thereby creating this great fast pace, yet never coming close to crossing the border to cramming in too much. Once again, this story was entertaining up until the last letter and I can't wait to see whatever challenge Alice and her supernatural entourage might face next.
Story 4 stars. Narration 4.5 stars This was another good entry in this series about a blood mage who is a private investigator. This one features a 12 year old null that has been kidnapped by the local cabal. Alice takes on the hunt for him. By now, all the characters are like friends so that is fun to catch up with them all. Of course, that doesn’t include the enemies. A new character is introduced as someone that dated Alice’s boyfriend when they were on a break. She and Shaun didn’t date long because he loved Alice. She’s a witch and is very helpful in this story. As in all the books there is plenty of violence in the storyline as well as love between Alice and Shaun. Alice shows a lot of growth in this book, probably the most of all the books so far. She’s got so much baggage and carries it around constantly. It causes problems throughout her new identity(5 years)life. In this book, she was able to rid herself of some of that baggage.
This was another good book in this series that I highly recommend. Fun, although kinda scary(not really scary), read!
Excellent, can't wait for more. kind of saw the betrayal at the end, but was surprised at something with the vamps. Awesome bonding with her, Sean, Charles. Finally secrets are out in the open. I'll kind of twist the mind games of a new villain though, but I have faith the author will keep it interesting.
More story keeps opening up. Never a dull moment. Shit is always going down, but now Alice is learning to share the burden and rely and trust in her friends and Sean's pack—her pack. Villains are trying to out villain each other. Assholes are trying to out asshole each other. But the story never dims. Love this series hard!
A LOT of things happen very quickly in the beginning of this book. The non-stop action was definitely the high point for me. The big show down at the end actually was a little bit of a let down, but I am sure we will get more in a later book.
I've binged this whole series in a week and completely loved it. Urban Fantasy at its best of the quality I haven't read in years, since I thought I'd 3chausted all of the good ones.
This has it all: detailed world building, fast pace, action along with quiet moments of character development, excellent side characters and awesome main characters.
Alice has come along so far in her growth across the books. She has draustrated me at times, and is far from perfect, but she is complex and nuanced and real. Sean is such an excellent match for her and his devotion is swoon worthy. I love their dynamic and the respect they have for each other like true partners. Charles, the enigmatic vampire, is a complex character, to and the side characters, such as Macolm are great, too.
My only niggle is that the relationship drama has been a little annoying. Maybe it's because I feel so strongly about the characters that it is actually more a testament to the writing that it's bothered me so much, but some of it just seems overly manufactured. I am also slightly apprehensive that Alice seems to loose her memory in the next book and I hope this isn't another convoluted spanner in the works and actually now we can see her and Sean move on from the personal dramatics. Although, arguably, in this most recent books those were early on and only lasted from for maybe 20% of the book.
I'm so sad to have to wait until March for the next one, but so happy I ended my reading year with such a gem!
I don't know if the author found love, and so now she feels gushy but I hated this book. ALICE started out so dope but now she is boring and dependent and annoying. The only saving Grace for this book was she expanded Alice's magic. But 70 percent of this book is Alice swooning over Sean it makes me want to throw up. The author has truly ruined the series. This book was a romance novel with a fantasy twist. I want to read a awsome urban fantasy with a SLIGHT dash of romance. It's sad authors with female leads feel the need to have a male love intereste so invested in the story with the main character. Cheers to another death of a once strong female lead.
Wow, what a ride! I was on edge for so much of this book, and that ending was insane! I think I aged about ten years reading this one! Honestly, this series is so much fun! Full of action, humour, mystery, and amazing side characters, this is a series you don't want to miss. Alice grows and strengthens with each book and I love watching her and Sean grow closer. Highly recommend this book and series!
Alice Worth is back with all her “general badass-ness” (to quote Malcolm). I was looking forward to the next installment of this series and all I can say is - WOW! Just wow! I love Alice’s growth in each installment. And this time, she takes a big step! This series has turned into one of my all time favorite urban fantasies. Can’t wait for what’s next!
I continue to enjoy this series, Alice is a great h There are a few nit picky things that stop me from giving this a 5* but if you are looking for a new urban fantasy you should definitely check this out
Her fierce loyalty dominates her choices and leads to incredible actions scenes that will keep readers glued to the pages. "Heart of Stone" is fantasy at its best and a definite keeper!
Alice is hired to find a missing boy with special null powers. Unfortunately, the Bell cabal is collecting people with the same powers and it is possible that he has ended up in their clutches. The vampires are unwilling to help because they are trying to ally themselves with Bell due to the potential war with Alice's grandfather. Meanwhile, Sean and Alice's relationship is growing stronger; however, there are those in the pack that do not approve and are willing to go to extreme means to see that Alice is removed from her position as Sean's consort.
I think this might have been my favorite book in the series so far, though I can't put my finger on exactly why that is. It could be because things with Sean are going so well, or maybe it is because Alice is putting more of an effort into trusting her friends. I also like the new character Carly and what she brings to the table, oh, and Alice's new element of her personality. I can't wait to see what becomes of her. Things are getting really interesting for Alice. I'm excited to see what happens next.
Heart of Stone, (Alice Worth Book 4), Lisa Edmonds
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre:Sci-fi and Fantasy, Romance.
Another terrific installment to the series. Its my favourite sort, where there's an overall story arc, but each episode is complete and wraps up this story neatly, not leaving great cliffhanger endings, but just hints of things to come. Review of books one and three below https://jeanniezelos.wordpress.com/20...
I love Alice, she's come such a long way from the solitary woman we first met. She's strongly independent and yet happy to make allies now, trusting in a few friends, Sean and Malcolm having the most trust. They're' two great characters too. Malcolm works so well with Alice, his issues mean he's a real asset to Alice, and she respects him, does everything she can to keep him safe. Sean, Pack alpha whose Pack aren't all happy about Alice, and in the past a couple of people have brought serious danger to them both with their actions to replace alice with someone they feel more suitable. Then there's the vampires, some of whom Alice has reluctantly accepted as allies, helped and accepted help. Charles seems to have some kind of feelings for Alice, that's been clear since day one. Its not so much a kind of romantic interest, as he sees her as a challenge, a puzzle, and for a centuries old vampire things like that are important. Life must get a little bland after so many years, an intellectual challenge of working out who and what she is, keeps life interesting for him. Like all vampires though, that doesn't mean he's trustworthy. They've got a kind of understanding currently, where both have helped the other and feel...well...a sort of friendship even if on Alice' side, that's kind of guarded.
Once more we've a tightly woven adventure, bringing in issues from the past and setting up more for the future. Alice is hired to find a missing child, an unregistered one, with rare talents that would make him a target for unscrupulous cabals. She can't just abandon a child, even though finding and rescuing him once more puts her life in danger, and this time maybe her long hidden secrets too. If they come out how will those around her react? What will it mean for her relationship with Sean? And will it make her an even bigger target to the supernatural world than she currently is?
Stars: Five, another cracking read, and i'm keen for more. Some series tire as they continue, I can see Alice has lots of adventures to go before that happens ;-) hurrah. If you like fantasy with a side of romance that doesn't dominate, just supports the story this read is one for you. Book via KU. The whole series is currently available on KU and its one worth reading
You know when you are watching a horror movie and the lead actress is being beyond dumb? You know where you are screaming at her just to take off the 4 inch heels as she runs around the abandoned summer camp? Or when she decides for no good reason to walk through the woods at midnight after finding her best friend beheaded? This book had one of those glaringly stupid things, that had me, the reader, jumping up and down at how obvious it was, why can't Alice, our lead see it, or any other of her now close friends. It was annoying, and went on too long before someone finally twigged and it was resolved (no spoilers here and okay the author mentions why Alice couldn't notice but Malcom?? where he at?)
Then just when I had gotten over that annoyance Alice decides to offer herself up "As Storm Girl" to help resolve a problem. Excuse me???? In no way shape or form is this a smart idea. But somehow even Sean thinks it is okay (say what now???) Worse, the people she is doing this for are beyond undeserving - the sullen boy, the ungrateful/resentful mother, the dad (who for some unknown reason blames Alice for everything and she agrees with him????) Yes, the author addresses Alice's need to blame herself for everything and protect everyone... BUT, it's not a reasonable or acceptable take - I just couldn't get behind it. Which makes everything she does, all but killing herself again and again... and again to resolve problems that aren't her making harder to swallow.
There are underlying threads to this story that I am still looking forward to exploring but this book - it just annoyed me on too many levels to give it a higher rating.
“Where do we stand?” he asked me. “Is this our first meeting, our second time starting over, or will I get to sleep with you in our bed tonight?”
*Swoon* Alice and Sean are one of my favourite otps. Since the moment I found this series on Kindle Unlimited, I have been obsessed. I have been eagerly awaiting this fourth book and I must say it was well worth it...Get it, worth it ;). The Alice Worth books have my favourite blend of fantasy and romance that I will always love and Lisa Edmonds is great at keeping that delicate balance of not too cliche, but just enough, add in some werewolves, magic and vampires and you have a page turner!
Edmonds has crafted some remarkable characters and the growth of Alice in this fourth book is truly engaging as the reader really becomes invested in the situations she gets into and the choices she makes ... or doesn’t make. Now Alice and Sean, as a couple, please se above and *swoooooon* I could not stop reading. And the dynamics between Alice and Malcom = hilarious.
Although this book does close out a few plot lines, it has opened the way for more intriguing ones that really benefit from a well-crafted familiar Characters and some intriguing new characters (Dare I hope for a spin-off series featuring Carly?).
As with this book, I eagerly await the next one, #5, for which a lovely teaser was included at the end of the 4th.
*Received ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another outstanding installment - this series just keeps getting better and better!
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book and it certainly did not disappoint. I love seeing the character growth with Alice, not to mention the growth of Sean and Alice’s relationship (which I especially loved in this book ❤️). Alice is learning to let others in, accept help, and most importantly, reconcile her past and present to become a whole person who deserves to live and love and be loved. Her strength to keep enduring and keep putting herself out there to help others despite all the horror and loss she’s been through is incredible and really shines throughout all the books, especially this one. Alice is finally stepping out of the shadows and making a stand, and it’s awesome. :D Big secrets are revealed in this book and the show down with Moses is just beginning. This is the point of no return and Team Alice is ready. Bring it on!
Seriously, bring on the next book ;) (can’t wait!). And if you haven’t read this series, go pick up the first book today (this is definitely a sequential series and you’ll need to start with the first book). You won’t regret it. (And no cliffhangers!).
This is one of my favorite series and I have been looking forward to this next installment. I would advise reading the series in order. The author does a good job with little reminders and recaps, but the overall story is an ongoing one.
Alice is still changing and growing and more accepting of all the people she has in her life. Her relationship with Sean is going great, but she still struggles with the secrets she is keeping from him. When she takes a case involving a 12 year old boy who has disappeared, she is painfully reminded of her own past and she is adamant to save the child from the dangerous situation he is in.
Every book seems to get better and better. I loved Sean/Alice in this one. There is so much going on. With the pack, the vampire court and dangerous cabal business. The plot is thickening and I for one can’t wait to read the next.
I probably could have done without the relationship drama aspect of this book, but the rest of it was pretty good. The relationship drama wasn't awful by any means but I feel like they were so slow to figure out something so obvious and it's kind of frustrating that now that Alice and Sean are good with each other then we have to dive into other people having a problem with Alice. Still, I continue to enjoy this series overall and think it has very interesting world building and a good magic system. Also I love how it's like 4 books in and she just casually throws in that Alice is bi and Malcolm is gay [or possibly bi as well?]. Excited to see more of
This book continues the story of Alice Worth as she begins to let people in to her protected world. We start to see the relationships in her life solidify. I really enjoy the relationship between Alice and Charles are they become tentative friends. Finding her place in Sean's world has its bumps in the road as do many relationships. What will happen with her biological family? Will she stand and fight or continue to hide in the shadows? This book is well paced with action, drama, romance and friendship. The characters are ever evolving and are fun to get to know through their adventures. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!
This is by far one of the best series I've read in while, with each book getting better. I went into work late, just to finish it this morning. I couldn't stop, didn't want to. You are seriously missing out if you haven't read this series, it's great. Each character is so well created, even the "side" characters come to life. The author put so much into this book, and you can tell.
4.2 stars Alice was not Alice.....for a while, anyway. I almost gave up on her but then I realized why I like her in the first place and thank god her not being herself did not drag on too long to test my impatient. Heart of Stone let us see Alice Worth growing into a more secured confident PI mage. Now her uncle found her and I want to see the show down real soon.
