The Girl Hunter (Special Agent Tess Winnett Series #9) by Leslie Wolfe follows Tess Winnett, an FBI agent with 'fire in her belly' when it comes to her job, who is assigned a case to catch a serial killer (The Hunter), that hits a little close to home. The story highlights the challenges faced by the team in their bid to capture the serial killer, including but not limited to the fact that the only survivor (a TV star who went missing seven [7] months ago) is determined to go back where she was captive and is not providing much information to help solve the case. The story is told predominantly from Tess Winnett's point-of-view but alternates between the point-of-view of the survivor.

What I love most about this book is Tess's compelling character. Tess's character feels real and will evoke some emotion/feeling: annoyance, understanding, dislike or admiration for getting the job done. Yes, she has shortcomings, and in the words of SAC Alan Pearson: "set more fires than I can put out." But she is (realistically) flawed. In the past, she was brutally assaulted and left within an inch of her life, unbeknownst to (almost) everyone. That made her empathetic to the survivor but also caused her to make questionable decisions (case in point: how she handled the survivor's best friend's visit to the hospital). Still, I was intrigued and stayed with her on this journey while she fought the ghost of her past.

There was just enough tension to keep my interest. But there was no jaw-dropping twist. The story had a satisfying ending. However, I was not 'falling off my chair' when the identity of the serial killer was revealed. Hence, my rating below:

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars as it is a good read. I would read the next book(s) in this series. I will be reading more books by this author.

This book can be read as a standalone. At no point in the book did I have to go back to check if I had inadvertently missed 'something.' It always felt like I had all the information I needed from the previous books.

I recommend this book to lovers of crime novels/ thrillers. Please note: This book features very little profanity and mentions rape & abuse.
This book does not contain any explicit sex scenes.

Odiei. Lamento, não consigo opinar de outra maneira. Na verdade, é injusto eu classificar este livro porque, simplesmente, não o devia ter lido. Se tivesse lido com atenção a sinopse e algumas reviews, percebia que este livro tem dos meus piores triggers warnings, daqueles que fujo a sete pés. Mas já há muito tempo que não lia um livro de Leslie Wolfe e da agente Tess Winnett, de quem gosto muito e lancei-me na leitura. Que foi dolorosa, mesmo tendo só passado os olhos na diagonal pelos capítulos da Kaina, onde relata os horrores que sofreu naqueles 7 meses de cativeiro.😖😣

Ultrapassando a minha sensibilidade atacada pelo tema, de uma forma racional acho que houve algumas coisas muito mal desenvolvidas, em relação ao silêncio da Kaina em não revelar nada que ajudasse a polícia e o FBI. Não faz sentido. Era uma mulher corajosa, uma sobrevivente e não o seria menos com a ajuda das autoridades.

O motivo do assassino também foi muito pobre para a devastação que provocou nas vidas daquelas pobres mulheres.

Houve muito exagero. Para o horror do que o assassino fez, este enredo foi exagerado.

This newly released serial killer thriller from the creative genius of veteran author Wolfe is a sure winner out-of-the gate. It is the most recent example of her monumental talent, versatility, and sensational ability to write page-turners with characters you care about.

(The Girl Hunter) is an intelligent, riveting, and genuinely chilling crime fiction tale but also infused with chilling psychological suspense, and a riveting plot with a storyline that will grip you by the throat and not let you go.

Leslie Wolfe is unbelievably versatile and has demonstrated her skill and success with books like “Stories Untold” an emotionally gut-wrenching saga about a decorated war veteran who wants to die and a prominent female psychologist who will not give up on him. Her Alex Hoffman Series turns her talent toward espionage with equal mental dexterity and exciting, riveting plots. Her crime fiction novels featuring the likes of Baxter and Holt against a Las Vegas backdrop were so damn entertaining that while the action was non-stop the two partners were engaging with heaps of humor along the way.

I have purchased all but two of her Detective Kay Sharp Series but I must sheepishly admit that I have not read them yet. Perhaps because I happened across her incredibly popular and well-received “The Watson Girl” several years ago that I have personally gravitated to her crime fiction book series, notably her top shelf serial killer thrillers, the Tess Winnett novels. Following “The Watson Girl” I went back and eagerly devoured her available novels with Winnett, and then followed Wolfe’s series of shorter works (novellas) featuring her flawed but strong FBI Agent Winnett while promising a full-length novel in the future.

This is the “hit-it-out-of-the-ballpark” novel Leslie Wolfe promised her fans after the four successful books and four gripping and fully satisfying tales featuring Winnett’s take-no-prisoners in shorter works. This is technically Tess Winnett Book #9 in the series.

Honestly, I would unconditionally recommend any book Leslie Wolfe has written from the first book she published. That said, “The Girl Hunter” decidedly demonstrates that Wolfe has many writing techniques in her quiver and she does suspend her prior tried and true writing style to debut a fresh array of surprises in this recent installment featuring the feisty temperamental Tess.

“The Girl Hunter” opens strong with scenes of heart-skipping suspense amidst the dangerous and deadly Florida Everglades. A young woman is struggling barefoot through the marsh of the swamp, light dimming as nightfall approaches. She is terrified and being relentlessly taunted and tracked by a vicious and sadistic serial killer the FBI has dubbed “The Hunter”.

The reader is gradually introduced to the main protagonist of TV celebrity Kiana Bayliss, a young woman who grew up poor but with a loving father who introduced her to the hypnotic world of the swamp, its wildlife, and magical beauty of the Florida Everglades. Her intimate relationship and unadulterated passion for the Everglades led to an incredible and fortuitous meeting on the edge of the Glades one day when she tossed a stranger a few tips on bait and fishing technique. Kiana and her Dad did not think any more about it, but that fateful meeting with a man who was in the TV business led to a life-altering opportunity to host a TV program dedicated to the Florida Everglades and its wonders. She is pretty, authentic, exuberant in front of a camera lens that loves her smile and enthusiasm. She is a self-taught expert in the beauty and dangers of the swamp, the behaviors of its wildlife species, and knowledge of the survival skills necessary to traverse its deadly terrain.

Wolfe creates a powerful and incredibly sympathetic female lead in the body and mind of Kiana. The author uses the First-Person Narrator writing technique to underscore the internal horror, desperation, courage, and perseveration of Kiana against incredible odds. The narrative of this tightly plotted serial killer thriller pounces off the diving board with Kiana and her young husband celebrating the life-altering news that her TV Show is going into syndication. The couple are happier than they have ever been in their lives when they are subjected to a blitz attack by “The Hunter” and both abducted.

The reader is rather quickly in deep water, and then treading water as Kiana narrates the horror of her predicament, confinement, torture, and emotional devastation at the hands of her merciless captor. The other main character of FBI Agent Tess Winnett expediently enters the fray, but the POV shifts to Third-Person Limited with Winnett. Readers of the Tess Winnett book series will recognize familiar and beloved characters from the preceding novels. It is definitely true that fans will have a fuller understanding of the nature of this case from where Tess finds herself taking the lead as an FBI Profiler (who is not an FBI Profiler) and with secret emotional baggage that impacts her actions and reactions toward the victim Kiana.

Wolfe releases a stick of dynamite with this new psychological thriller featuring a fully realized serial killer, a protagonist in Kiana that you fall in love with out of the gate, and a uniquely positioned Tess Winnett (agent and profiler extraordinaire) tossed into an emotionally challenging case because of her secret past coming back to bite her like an alligator’s teeth in the swamp. She is out of her element in almost every way, and in fact, she is overshadowed by the tortured and scarred young Kiana who is leading them back through the marshes of the Everglades to a hellish destination of reckoning.

I finished two novels this past week, and I cannot help saying (again) that in my opinion Wolfe is woefully underrated. The description and reviews are stellar but many of the accolades are from regular folks in middle America like me. The other book I read this week was written by a household name author who has garnered a horde of awards, and the description has praise from half of the successful domestic suspense authors writing today. The tale of the take is that you will never make a wrong step reading Leslie Wolfe.

Tinha imensas saudades da escrita da Leslie, e ainda mais da agente Tess Winnet. Este livro foi uma grande revelação para mim. Desde o primeiro livro que esta autora me conquistou, muito pela forma como constrói cada crime e cada resolução. Mas este livro está deveras incrível. Todos eles são marcados pela fácil descoberta do assassino, e sempre achei que isso fosse intencional, para que o leitor se sentisse ainda mais dentro da história como um investigador. Isso nunca afetou a minha experiência de leitura, contudo eu gosto muito mais quando somos surpreendidos no fim. E este foi exatamente isso. Neste livro foram reunidas todas as coisas que eu adoro num bom policial: a escrita fácil, descrições intrigantes e bastante gráficas, ação repleta de adrenalina e mistério, muitos segredos e puzzles para montar e uma inspetora super badass, resiliente e teimosa, com muito sentido de justiça. Adorei cada capítulo, cada passagem e fui mesmo mesmo surpreendida no final, o que foi a cereja no topo do bolo.

Swamp People

Can't say I am a fan of this one. Unlikable FBI agent, the supposedly brilliant profiler Tests Winnett, is called into investigate the return of a missing reality show star. The victim was missing for seven months and is almost as unlikable as Tess. She insists on being returned to the scene and is uncooperative. As usual Tests follows her gut, violating direct orders and common sense.

The story is weak. I identified the purpose at the first appearance. He is not especially interesting and the flashback narrative lacks suspense. Not convincing or compelling.

Agora é que as coisas começam a aquecer entre Tess e Fradella!!! Finalmente !!! O livro lê se muito rápido, com capítulos pequenos e intercalados entre o presente e o passado, ficamos completamente ligados à história. Desta vez acertei no assassino 😍. Curiosa em acompanhar a relação dos dois.

O Caçador traz-nos o regresso da agente Tess Winnett do FBI, adorada por todos os leitores que a conhecem. Mas, desta vez, o crime é um pouco diferente… Foi essa particularidade que mais me cativou neste livro, o facto de não ser o já conhecido homicídio e o posterior desvendar do mesmo.

Neste caso particular, conhecemos uma protagonista que se parece com Tess em muitos aspetos. Kiana é realmente uma força da natureza que os leitores não podem deixar se conhecer.
As semelhanças entre ambas representa, também, um desafio para a agente, na medida em que se vê confrontada com o seu passado e com os traumas do mesmo.

Acredito que os leitores mais atentos não vão ficar surpreendidos com o final porque a partir de dada altura se torna bastante óbvio quem é o mau da fita. Ainda assim, a lógica e a credibilidade reinaram, pelo que tudo encaixou na perfeição.

Ler este livro foi uma experiência da qual gostei muito. Manteve o habitual ritmo alucinante, as pistas subtis, os acontecimentos macabros e a tensão constante, mas inovou muito num outro aspeto que deixo para cada um descobrir por si.

Se são fãs do género policial não podem perder este livro. Para quando o próximo?

Acho que posso dizer que este é o meu livro favorito da Leslie Wolfe.

Um regresso estrondoso da nossa querida agente do FBI, Tess Winnett, que vai ser posta à prova e relembrar traumas do passado.

A autora apresenta-nos mais uma protagonista incrível. Uma autêntica badass que dificilmente irei esquecer. Foi muito fácil conectar-me com ela e com a sua força. Adorei as descrições dos Everglades e da forma como Kiana pertence àquele local, absorvendo a sua natureza selvagem.

O livro tem um ritmo intenso e sensações muito fortes. Uma aura de mistério que, associada à magia sombria dos pântanos, mantendo-nos completamente presos à narrativa.

É uma leitura imperdível, só vais recuperar o fôlego quando o terminares.

Tinha lido os dois primeiros livros da autora e não tinha gostado muito. Já nem pensava ler nada dela.

No entanto vi tão boas opiniões deste livro que decidi dar mais uma chance e não me arrependi.

Gostei bastante desta leitura. Da caracterização da Kiana com todos os seus traumas e de como a Tess se vai identificar com esses mesmos traumas.

Tive uma ligeira desconfiança sobre quem seria o Caçador mas não me tirou o prazer da leitura.

Sou capaz de voltar a dar mais oportunidades aos próximos livros da autora pois considero que teve uma grande evolução dos primeiros livros para este.

Não consegui criar ligação com as personagens,

Claro que eu não fazia melhor, mas é por isso que ela é milionária e eu estou aqui, mirradolas, corcunda e sem assistentes para limparem a areia do meu gato.😅

Tenho a dizer que ... Este foi o melhor livro que li da autora!
Juro que senti o medo, a prisão, o horror... Houve momentos da leitura em que o meu estômago revirou, nunca pensei que mexesse com as emoções como mexeu. Uma vez que os trilhers da autora sempre mais 'tranquilos'. Sinto que ela neste livro atingiu o seu pico de tortura, nunca um livro dela foi tão intenso a este nível.
A personagem principal tinha uma garra única, não foi uma vítima qualquer, rotulada com um síndrome qualquer. Foi uma guerreira, tal como é a nossa Tess.
Senti que este livro foi mais maduro que os outros e o cativeiro em si muito diferente. Até porque, neste caso o crime começa a ser investigado após o reaparecimento da vítima, por isso o contra relógio acaba por ser outro. Em vez de termos a agente a mover mundos e fundos para encontrar a vítima com vida, temos vários problemas em fazê-la falar e atitudes muito estranhas que nos vão baralhar (ainda mais) as teorias. O facto de querer voltar para cativeiro, não querer falar sobre nada, nem mesmo denunciar quem lhe fez aquilo.
No final, apenas um apontamento muito pessoal sobre a única coisa que me faltou neste livro, algo que ele vive bem sem, mas que estando eu a ler os livros por ordem quero mais. 🤭 Gostava de ter tido mais sumo da vida de Tess, porque gosto de acompanhar o desenvolvimento da sua vida pessoal. Senti falta de mais notas sobre esta personagem.

Ao fim de algum tempo a Agente Tess Winnet está de regresso. Foi um exercício para me recordar o que tinha acontecido naquela praia ao anoitecer com o novato que a vai acompanhar.
Tess vê-se a braços com os seus próprios fantasmas, quando inicia uma nova investigação!
Kiana, com uma carreira de sucesso e ascensão na televisão, é caçada. Após 7 meses de cativeiro do caçador, consegue escapulir-se e fugir. E aqui começa a dificuldade de Tess, com esta vitima pouco colaborante, que a única coisa que quer é regressar a Everglades, o pântano onde esteve prisioneira.
Mas Kiana não foi a única mulher caçada, outras houve anterior e posteriormente. E a última caçada é a gota d’água que faz Kiana ajudar Tess na sua perseguição ao caçador.
Onde entram as margaridas??? Pois então queriam que eu conta-se tudo… vão ler vocês!

Eu neste livro tive um pequeno problema, tenho pânico de cobras. Quando lerem vão perceber porque passei o livro todo a torcer e retorcer e até a levantar o pezinho do chão. Ai que sufoco que eu só pensava não deixes absorver o que estás a ler ou só dormes lá para Agosto.
Mas tirando isto, um livro que se lê sem conseguir fechar até chegar ao fim, um sufoco que só queremos chegar ao fim.

Foi o primeiro livro que li da autora e fiquei curiosa com a história da Detetive Tess Winnet.

A história é bem fluída, bem rápida de ler e de perceber. Adorei as personagens e torci para que a Tess e o Fradella ficassem juntos.

Fui sempre fazendo as minhas teorias ao longo do livro e no final fiquei mais uma vez de boca aberta pois não acertei na pessoa que a raptou. Isso só prova que o livro é mesmo bom, eu adoro isso nos livros. Se me põe à prova para descobrir os assassinos e eu no final não descobro quem é, então a autora fez o seu trabalho.

Sem dúvida que vou querer ler mais títulos da autora. Tem uma escrita bem simples e estruturada.

Sou muito fã dos livros da Leslie Wolfe, mas depois do último dela mais virado para o thriller “a cirurgia”, ao qual dei 5 estrelas. Senti que este ficou um pouco atrás então daí as 4 estrelas. No entanto, é mais um livro bastante policial e que nos faz pensar muito em todas as possíveis situações que possam acontecer. É um livro pequeno e fácil de ler! É um bom livro e gostei!!!!

Um livro desafiante, com um caso duro e uma vítima/sobrevivente complexa.

Foi uma leitura rápida e viciante, a escrita é frenética e emocional, manteve-me completamente vidrada desde o primeiro capítulo até ao final. A tensão psicológica é crescente, o relato e os comportamentos das personagens conseguiram transmitir-me a urgência e a gravidade do caso.

Gostei de rever estes personagens, Tess Winnett é sem dúvida peculiar e lutadora. A identidade do assassino para mim não foi uma surpresa, percebi facilmente e desiludiu-me um pouco a facilidade com que acertei.

Foi uma leitura agradável, cativante e viciante. A combinação de suspense, algumas reviravoltas e intensidade emocional faz deste um thriller psicológico difícil de largar.
