Not really a memoir of the author’s (S.M. Carlson) journey from atheism to religious belief. Only in the prologue does Carlson briefly discuss how he came to be a member of the LDS (Mormon) Church. His sincerity is clear, but he should have devoted more space to this momentous life change. Instead, the book is a survey of comparative religion and the compatibility of faith and science. What’s most interesting is his description of LDS beliefs.
A very beautiful book that describes the author's personal journey from his conversion from atheism to Mormonism, in a process of reflection, information, logic and truth.
It moved me from its beginnings, and it seemed to me to be a work with a highly relevant contribution to interreligious dialogue.
5 stars.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The book has its moments. I received a refresher course in theology. It shed some light on different religions, but I'm not sure I got the authors point. Maybe because I m a "cradle Catholic". Or because I already believe in God and Jesus Christ. It didn't seem to flow. I had no problem setting it down.
This book really opened my eyes to religion in a whole new way. I didn’t expect to connect with it as much as I did, but it surprised me. The author shares their journey from being a complete atheist to finding faith, specifically in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s not just a simple story of switching beliefs—it’s more like a deep dive into why we believe what we believe.
What I loved most is how the book doesn’t just dismiss science or logic. Instead, it shows how faith and reason can actually work together. The author questions everything, from miracles to creation, and looks at them from both a scientific and a spiritual perspective. It made me think differently about the balance between doubt and belief.
If you’ve ever wondered how science and faith can coexist, or if you’re curious about someone’s personal journey from skepticism to faith, this book is worth checking out. It’s honest, thoughtful, and might just change how you see things too.
