It's Halloween in Estes Park. Costumes, Candy, and Pizza? Watson says, yes please! (Well, except for the costumes.) As usual, before the festivities even get going, plans begin to go askew. Luckily, Winifred and Watson are there to make sure Halloween isn't ruined for everyone. (Official blurb coming soon.)

As always, a fun, relatively quick read, albeit it seemed a bit scattered at times. We seem to zig and zag from Fred's inner demons, to Halloween decor, questioning suspects, and dining out, to the alternately cranky, treat driven Watson's growing friendship with Susan. Given his propensity to sense when to abandon his other dominate traits and show his loving, soothing side to stressed humans, I'm not sure if we should see this as signs of tough-as-nails Susan eventually cracking or just that her iron woman mask is simply slipping a bit.

The story is cozy, too, with friends and family popping in and out, the over-the-top decorations for the holiday, and even one restaurant owner a bit jealous that his business hasn't been the scene of a crime yet. Hey, this is Fred's world, where she's seen as a murder solving celebrity and being associated with her is a perk. True, not everyone sees it that way, of course. I wonder how many homes and businesses Fred is now banned from for her intrusive style? There's a sense of paranoia to Fred, too, much of it revealed in her sessions with a counselor recommended by fellow corgi owner Paulie. The sense of looking over her shoulder constantly for Branson or the Irons Family has left its mark. To be honest, I was tired of that thread some books ago but obviously others relish the foreboding atmosphere that possibility creates. All this during Halloween season, no less, although Watson's running battle with the bewitching, battery-operated cat-in-a-box add humor.

As for the murder, this time Fred actually sees the victim die. Of course, Fred being Fred, she seems to almost immediately sense that this is no mere drunken accident. It's murder. She even seems to know how it was done quite quickly. More amazingly, Susan listens to her. Watson is obviously having an effect on her. Grin. So, who killed Brian? Was he even the intended victim? This obviously wasn't how the charity event was supposed to end. Fred would like nothing better than the guilty party to be her obnoxious ex-husband, who she remains sure is connected to Branson. But, hey, we not only have another wedding to look forward to but a potential big events. What? Nope. Not telling. Read the book. Grin. Seriously, it's a fun read, with lots of characters that come and go but Fred and Watson, as always, remain at the center. Susan was rather prominent this time, too, as he character is emerging more each book. You're in for a treat. There are even recipes to create your own edible treats if you wish.

I'm so torn. I have loved this series until the books post Branson.

But now the books seem like they've lost their purpose. The Ex and Ex-BFF were sent here and then... nothing. What was the point? They have not been utilized in any way except for making the main character and and look so stupid.

I really didn't enjoy either of the last 2 books with all the wedding nonsense. It was just absurd and again, it feels like filler content. We did not need 2 books about the wedding stuff. And now another wedding? Please no.

The series should have wrapped up a while ago. Maybe gone for a couple books after Branson got locked up, and then concluded all the storylines in a way that gives everyone closure.

It just feels life the latest books are missing that spark in the earlier books.

And I hate the way the author makes the main character talk about herself, putting down her looks and weight. The writer is a male using a female pen nam. So it's really insulting for him to write a strong female lead that way. At this point in the series he should do better.

Oh and the pick me girl vibes were wild in this book as the author drops the title of Weyward like 6 or 7 times throughout the book. There is absolutely no reason for that.

I don't know if I'll continue the series, which is a huge deal because I've been here since the Cruel Candy, and this was one of my favorite series. :/

Our Grumpy, Yet Loveable Corgi Empath!

"Puzzling Pizza" is Book 33 of the Cozy Corgi Mysteries series, written by Mildred Abbott. This is one of my top favorite book series. This series focuses on Winifred "Fred" Page-Lopez; her husband, Leo Lopez; her best friend and Cozy Corgi partner, baker Katie Pizzalato; the Pacheco Twins (Ben, who works in the Cozy Corgi Bookstore; and Nick, who works with Katie, baking in the bakery); the Hanson's with their dogs Winston and Phineas; Paulie with his two corgis, Flotsam and Jetsum; our stern, but otherwise lovable Chief of Police Susan Green; all the other human characters of Estes Park, Colorado; and last, but definitely not the least, is our grumpy corgi sidekick, Watson, who can have a downright grumpy, turn-his-back-and-ignore-his-Mama attitude, loves several people in this series, "treats" is his favorite word; and yet, he has the heart of a hero and the soul of an empath, offering comfort to 'everyone', and I mean 'everyone' who is feeling blue and sad. Winifred can usually judge from Watson's reaction to certain people, whether or not that person is good or not to be trusted. However, in this episode, Watson gives comfort to at least ten people, and one of them is a murderer. Go figure! This episode is about a tattoo inking that went bad and caused a death. The suspect list is lengthy, and the murderer may or may not be the most usual one. I gave this book a 5 star rating.

As always, the notice of a new Cozy Corgi Mystery is a thrill.
Time to clear a day and a night into early morning simply to
read non-stop!!!
PUZZLING PIZZAS is a fantastic addition to the series. Partly because none of the core characters ever disappoint or veer from their personalities, even Watson, dba Officer Fleabag is on point, it is almost like catching up with old friends.
One of the continuing attractions of the Cozy Corgi Mysteries, is that
the reader is wearing Fred's broomstick skirts and boots as every layer appears and disappears, sweeping into the mystery, guessing the next step although the next step is somehow not obvious, and the outcome is logical but far from expected. Cautiously, as if it is really Halloween, there is an element of foreboding and uncomfortable memories throughout the book.
Well worth missing a few hours of sleep and like the 33 Cozy Corgi Mysteries before, it will be a fantastic re-read!!!

PLUS, Katie' pastry of Caramelized Onion, Goat Cheese, and Sun-Dried Tomato Pretzel Buns is the featured recipe, YUM!!!

Fairly good book in the series. My problem was it seemed scattered at times and threw characters into situations and then just sort of left them out until the end, especially the tattoo artists. A lot of “would he really, wouldn’t he”, speculation about Garrett. Frankly, I’ve had enough of Garrett and Charlotte-finish that storyline already. The mystery was good, just seemed crowded with the back and forth of “who done it”, over and over. Not enough of the regular characters and too much pretzel buns. OMG, I gag when I think about those. Seemed to be all they served besides the pastries here and there.

24-67 this is the first book in the series that I did not get to read in tandem with one of my best friends. Linda passed away in March. We would preorder our books and laugh and discuss the good parts. Linda loved Corgis. She had many good friends in Corgi shapes living with her through out the years. Watson will always remind me of Linda. Linda got me started on this series and I will continue to read about the adventures of Estes Park, Fred, Leo, and Watson. This was a great story with of twists. Hopefully Garrett and Charlotte will get twisted in jail eventually. I bought this e-book from Amazon.

Watson totally devotes himself to Chief Green

A very good story full of attempted tricks and turns. Explores the background of some Estes Park residents and new arrivals. Great character development. Well written and attention grabbing. Watson and Susan’s corgi love affair is wonderful to watch. It’s come a very long way. Enjoy the book.

I adore this series!

I love how the author plots up things several books in advance and weaves the threads to set it all up. I didn't write this volume as high as any of the other ones because a few things seemed a bit rushed there at the end. However this is still worth a read! I love this author and this series very dearly.

Cheers for Officer Fleabag

It's always a pleasure to read these mysteries set in Estes Park. The location and familiar characters from Winifred's family and business owners solving another murder or two is good for an entertaining afternoon. Loving corgis helps too.
