"You are about to embark on a truly weird, interesting, and entertaining experience..." So begins the “odyssey of awkwardness” that is Call Me Clumsy, the my-life-so-far memoir of Matthew Weinrich. Through utterly humbling experiences that span the decades of his life, Weinrich provides anecdotes that are equally cringe-inducing and laugh-out-loud funny. From his experience as a consummate slacker to his marriage proposal gone horribly awry to an unfortunate run-in with the fine men and women of the TSA, Weinrich brings you along as he strolls down memory lane, for better or for worse. Ultimately, Weinrich gives us a heart-warming picture of the humility of a child of God who knows, without a doubt, that the old adage applies to God is God, and I am not... ...not even close.
Born in Superior, Montana in 1984, Matthew Weinrich grew up in Montana, New Mexico, Nevada and Oklahoma. In 2003 he graduated from Virgin Valley High School and went on to Oklahoma State University where he graduated in 2008. He currently lives in Oklahoma City and teaches at Western Oaks Middle School in the Putnam City School District. He is happily married to his beautiful wife Danielle of six years. Matt and Danielle have recently welcomed their first child, a son named Elijah. In his spare time Matt enjoys playing sports, writing, watching baseball and being involved with his church.
This review is from: Call Me Clumsy (Kindle Edition) This is a collection of true events which helped one man face his faux pas. Let's face it, not every man is willing to share these accounts with the public. Of the 16 hilarious events (some not so funny, such as biting his tongue nearly in half), I liked the story of the ice baths and how it almost led to his total meltdown; the marriage proposal caper; the third hour when Hurricane Clyde strikes; the exploding luggage nightmare at the airport; and the surfing event in California which makes me wonder if his nipples ever grew back!! Sorry, Matt, I roared with laughter as it reminded me of when my husband was floating in our harbor years back and a bluegill decided to nibble on HIS nipple ... it hurt for a month! Oh, and the worst laid plans for Valentine's week which winds up killing the wife's cat! Okay, I've revealed enough, so you'll just have to read the remainder of the stories that are so funny that I was loudly laughing out loud. We all have funny events in our lives, we just don't want to share! LOL Matthew Weinrich just happens to be a real man ... a brave tell-all guy! His tales are well written, compelling, and hilarious. Highly recommend these stories to lift the spirits!
For me, 2 stars means It’s okay. Comparatively, 5 is where I must own the book and plan to reread it multiple times. 1 is I didn’t like it at all.
In this book, the author attempts to give lessons of life by relating the crazy mishaps of his youth and young adulthood and what he learned from them. And while he has had some cringe worthy things happen, I never really connected with the humor. I have read books where the story telling of this nature really works, but this just fell flat for me.
Having said that, it was easy to read and I did finish the book. I am not one to keep reading just to say I finished it. There are too many books to fight through a bad one. I would say that if you like stories with humor and picking yourself up by your bootstraps and learning to laugh about it later, then give it a try...maybe I just needed to read this book at a different time in my life :)
I laughed until I cried. I identified with so many of the goofy things he did. I have been clumsy when it comes to injuries to my feet and legs. I’ve broken both feet twice, both knees twice and both ankles. I used to get teased for falling “UP” the stairs. I don’t think I have ever done anything quite as embarrassing as the things I read about in this book. I have promoted the heck out of this book to my teacher friends. There is something for everyone in it. The story I identified with the most was “Fingers on Home Row”. Matt and I are both teachers. As such we have each had our share where we were doing what we thought was our best to encourage students only to have them burst into tears. Why? Because we didn’t pay enough attention to our students and take into consideration any concerns they had AT THE TIME, only to learn that because we had not, we had in actuality made the student feel there was no way they could succeed. For me it was a student who kept insisting they could not read because they had an issue with short term memory. I just knew I could help them. Later talking with several students, the school counselor and the parents I learned he had a brain injury that made short term memory almost impossible. I felt so terrible. Some of Matt’s stories show us that there are people out there who are willing to help us out when we really mess up. He also shows us that God definitely watches out for us when we put ourselves into stupidly dangerous situations. I want everyone I meet to read this book. It is one I have read over and over and over. That’s not something I do very often. It is definitely one of my favorites to read. I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Call Me Clumsy was a fun, fast read full of laughs. I really enjoyed it! I love funny non-fiction, especially collections of essays. I needed a light-hearted read and Call Me Clumsy was the perfect solution.
As someone who was also clumsy and awkward during my teenage years (and beyond, to be honest), I really identified with Weinrich. I loved his self-effacing humor, the conversational writing style, and of course, the humor. I found myself laughing out loud several times and smiling throughout the entire book.
What I thought made Call Me Clumsy special is that Weinrich manages to keep the book free of profanity and it's a book that anyone of any age could safely read. I admire that in an author, especially in a humor book!
If you're looking for a fun read, I'd definitely recommend Call Me Clumsy. I look forward to reading more from Matthew Weinrich!
