Fastpaced military sci-fi with lots of action and a little romance. The dystopian setting is interesting and well developed, as are the characters, who are easy to get attached to in a brutal, high stakes world where that might not always be wise. Intriguing plot, great character development, plenty of thrills - an engrossing and entertaining read that leaves the reader eagerly awaiting its sequel.

I borrowed this book thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription and read it between my tablet and phone using the Kindle app.

This is a sci-fi story set in a dystopian future Earth, where humans have damaged the world so severely that the only way to continue living is by altering themselves, thus creating "altered" humans. While some regular humans manage to survive, the altered ones are superior in many ways. Against this backdrop, we follow the story of Sam Ryan, a member of the military special forces tasked with maintaining peace between humans and altered humans. Sam must also grapple with his brother’s decision to retire from the military after completing one final mission.

I found this to be a super fast-paced story that blends military action with a touch of light romance, which fits perfectly into the narrative. I really enjoyed the world-building and how each chapter expands on it a little more—great work by the author in that regard. As the first book in a series, it’s intriguing and well-executed, leaving you eager for more.

DNF @ the end of chapter 10. This is fine so far—the writing isn’t great but it’s readable—but I’ve thought it through and I’ve decided I can’t get past the cheesiness of one of the main bad-guy groups in this lesbian military SF novel being named the Children of Charon…. aka COC. (When the characters want to be rude, they fully call its members COCsuckers.) I cannot come back from this!

DISCLAIMER - I received a free copy of this book to review for the 2024/25 Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC).

I’m not a big fan of military science fiction. I am a pacifist and a vegetarian so reading about killing is not my go to topic. S. J. Lee’s book has a lot of fighting and killing and all of the gore that goes along with it.

Of Friction is about a world split apart. Mother nature has been so decimated by human arrogance that much of life on earth, plant and animal alike, has been nearly eradicated. To survive, genetic scientists bred the Altered, a race of humans that could thrive despite the devastation. Of course, the altered viewed the remaining humans as inferior and obsolete. A new “us verses them” world emerged.

Of Friction is non-stop action, with conflict filling the pages. Some of the battles are with weapons, some with fists, and some with words. Even the two central characters, Sam Ryan and her half brother Scott, are in a battle of their own.

As I have already pointed out, this is not my favorite genre. That said, there was quite a bit to like about this book. The writing is tight, the characters interesting and engaging, and the concept a bit original. Most importantly, there is something special about Lee’s ability to put you, the reader, right into the action. Reading Of Friction you not only feel like you know each of these characters, you feel like you are in the conflict right beside them. You rejoice at their victories, mourn at their losses, and regret when the book comes to an end. I actually spaced out the final sixty pages over three days.

Fortunately, there is a sequel Of Abrasion due out in March.

Summary: Sam "Valkyrie" Ryan grew up a Marine. She joined the corps at twelve years old, the youngest ever in the special operations group (SOG). She's never known anything else and her world is changing. Her brother is leaving the corps. They've been thrown into Echo Company to augment a mission. And it's getting real. She'll have to find her own place in the world, rationalize her feelings about her brother, and find love all while protecting the fragile possibility of a peace that will change the world for everyone.

The Good: There is something to be said for how quickly I consume something. A key measure of a book for me is if I choose to read the book instead of do other things I ought to be doing. I did a bit of that. It went down easy. It's obvious that either Lee has spent time in theater or done her homework. She captures both the fear and the boredom of being a soldier on the ground, excuse me a Marine. We follow along in the mind of Sam as they conduct a mission into the edge of UMF control where both humans and altered are chaffing. We get to see the many personalities of a unit and how they come together through strife and proximity. I'm a fan of military fiction and this felt like it could have lived inside any genre - modern, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy, western, you name it. The execution felt authentic. The science fiction is pretty good as a premise, though it doesn't play a front and center role beyond explaining the "altered." We allow the ridiculously effective medical treatments because 'science fiction advancements' but there are many elements of this story that could have existed in Afghanistan or Iraq or Vietnam for that matter.

The Bad: Lee tries a little too hard for the romance with Tanner. It's laid on kind of thick in the beginning and rebirthed at the end to feed OF Abrasion, but it doesn't feel the same through the middle. In truth the sexual/romantic tension between Sam and Miriam could have built itself more gradually and been more satisfying in the end if it had done so. As it is, it felt rushed and too romancy for my tastes and we didn't even get a satisfying payoff. And I'm someone who actually likes romances for what they are. It's really my only complaint.

Overall: OF Friction is a book that I consumed pretty quickly because I wanted to keep going. I might have set it down in the first three chapters, but chapter four on I was invested. If you're looking for a well told story in the life of a soldier dealing with unknown quantities and hostile natives, this is a good one. I'll read book two. It's just the right kind of subtle to make it satisfying.

4.5 of 5 stars for me.

This incredible standout debut expertly blends tense, military and dystopian sci-fi with action and deeply human relationships. This involves a high-stakes operation where Sam "Valkyrie" Ryan, her brother, and her temporary squad must protect a reconciliation summit from genetic-supremacist terrorists. This mission becomes a battleground of intense emotions and explosive action. How is this a debut?!?

Sam’s internal struggles and sibling conflict are the highlights of the story. This is a testament to Lee’s ability to weave complex character arcs with action-packed plotlines. The familial bond between Sam and her brother is one of the most compelling aspects of the story and bonds us deeply to these two. This reminds me so much of Mass Effect with the found family/squad aspect - despite the lack of aliens. The diverse cast of characters, each with their own backstories and motivations, brings incredible depth to the story. The "found family" trope is beautifully executed here, with relationships that feel authentic. The addition of our charming female medic introduces a subtle, slow-burn sapphic romance that adds yet another layer of complexity to Sam's character.

Action scenes in Of Friction are nothing short of exhilarating. Lee crafts battles that are not just physically intense but also emotionally charged, making each confrontation feel like a crucial turning point. The pacing is relentless, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they navigate the intricacies of a tenuous peace on the brink of collapse. I was so, so stressed - in the best of ways. The ending is a masterstroke of emotional storytelling. It delivers a gut punch that is as brutal as it is brilliant. The shift to another POV at the end is a clever move that broadens the scope and hints at even more layers to uncover in future books.

Overall, this is an impressive debut that signals the arrival of a talented new voice in the genre. S.J. Lee's ability to blend intense military action with nuanced character development and social commentary is remarkable. This is a must-read for fans of dystopian, military sci-fi, and those who appreciate strong, multifaceted characters. Highly recommended!

Of Friction is a gripping science fiction novel that follows a ragtag team of marines on their first mission beyond guard duty, tasked with investigating the tactical situation in a southern region long after humanity’s downfall due to climate change. In this world, humans and Altered humans—genetically modified to survive the harsh climate—remain locked in a tense standstill after a devastating war over dwindling resources. The story masterfully blends military action, political intrigue, and social commentary as the marines encounter members of various political factions, culminating in a confrontation with radicalized Altered humans.

The prose is stunningly beautiful, and each character’s voice is distinct and memorable. Even in moments of heightened tension where emotions run high, the individuality of the characters shines. By the end, I could easily identify which character I was following without needing their name—an impressive feat.

The plot moves at a relentless pace, and I often found myself reading far beyond the time I had planned. The story’s themes, setting, and unique premise make it stand out in the genre. The tension never falters, keeping the reader on edge as the characters face constant danger.

I particularly enjoyed the dynmic between Scott and Sam, as their relationship adds another layer of complexity to the story. The romantic subplot between the protagonist and the unit’s medic feels natural and contributes to the narrative without overshadowing the primary conflict.

Overall, Of Friction is an enthralling read that skillfully balances action, tension, and character-driven storytelling. Sci-fi fans will find it hard to put down.

My new favorite military sci-fi. Of Friction was deeply satisfying from cover to cover. It's a highly cinematic novel, too; Lee cites the director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) as one of her main influences, and that cinematic style comes across beautifully in her work. It's atmospheric, with a quiet narrative sophistication, and tension can erupt into sudden violence in a blink. Lee's real-life work has brought her to some pretty dangerous parts of the world, and she's seen more than a lot of people would care to. This gives her novel an authenticity and narrative authority that most military sci-fi lacks completely.

Sam "Valkyrie" Ryan is an elite special forces operator - a marine first and foremost, someone who has minimized the most human parts of herself to focus on the task at hand, whatever that task is. As a result, Sam has become an emotionally-stunted young woman who has difficulty expressing her deep reservoir of feelings. But professionally, she's a legend; she and her brother Scott are renowned throughout the UMF as some of the best operators you can find. They're respected everywhere they go - and their talents are in high demand.

When they get assigned to a squad called Echo for a special mission far to the south, Sam is forced to reckon with parts of herself she didn't pack away as neatly as she thought, and messy truths from a dark past she thought she understood. She'll also forge bonds with her new teammates beyond anything she's experienced before as Echo gets mired in a simmering powder keg far from home.

This is the first sapphic military sci-fi I've ever come across, and maybe one of the only ones that exist. Lee's opening entry gives us a lesbian protagonist who is easy to relate to and puts her in a queernormative setting where she can focus on the mission - and her budding friendships with her new comrades - without the unnecessary distraction of prejudices familiar in our own world. The setting itself is far from comfortable, though; it's a future Earth that's all too easy to imagine. Runaway climate change has obliterated great cities and toppled old nations, leaving the survivors struggling to hang on to technologies once taken for granted. Amid the ghosts of the old world, humanity develops new technologies, new nations, new alliances - and new species. The Altered are human genetic offshoots - stronger, faster, tougher - and they are a new force humanity has to reckon with. But diplomacy doesn't seem to have been written into their enhanced genetics along with their other abilities, and when a nation of Altered splinters into violent factions, it becomes everyone's problem. This is the world that Echo - and Sam herself - are forced to navigate. It turns out to be messier and more dangerous than anyone ever expected.

Sam knows she can depend on her fellow Marines - that's a given. But can she rely on herself? Can she keep it together when she discovers revelations that shake her entire life to the core?

Of Friction is an absolute must-read for anyone who loves a good sapphic adventure - or anyone looking for great military sci-fi. Because even with the sapphic tag aside, this is military sci-fi at its most realistic and authoritative. Tom Clancy couldn't have told this story better. S.J. Lee is the author that finally put military-sci fi on my radar, and she did it by writing the first great sapphic work of her genre.

She's gotten a lot of accolades for it, and she deserves every one.

Well done. Very well done.

Ok, so I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, wow. This is Lee's debut novel and it is phenomenal. It is very much a character driven story. Even when the military action finally starts taking place...and then continues to pound into you, the character development is the main driver of the story. All of the characters felt rich and nuanced. I loved this book and look forward to the next installment. Leaving it on the cliffhanger it did is going to kill me until book 2 comes out.

The universe this takes place in felt like a very unique twist on what our future holds in store for us. The beginning of the book where it briefly describes the world feels so prophetic. Aside from creating the Altered, I can see everything else taking place without having to suspend any disbelief. And I can see humanity's and the Altered's positions about each other being pretty spot on if the Altered were created.

The blurb mentions a slow burn romance. I wouldn't really classify it that way. There is a lot of pining and longing looks, but neither character actually does anything to start or further a romantic relationship really. And when they do finally kiss...I was disappointed with Miriam's immediate choices and how we find her the next chapter. Maybe there will be more development in the next book...but that depends on how the cliffhanger works out to be honest.

Note: I listened to the audiobook.

This book really took me by surprise. Being a military sci-fi, I was expecting it to be a bit more action-driven, and so was thrown off in the early goings by how character-driven it was. In truth, it took me a little to get into because of that. But in the end it paid off. Once I became invested in the characters, really when echo team was introduced and fleshed out, it helped better pull me into the story. And so when the action did begin, I found myself very much worried about most of the team. And once that action started, the rest of the book had a wonderful balance of suspense and pay-off, along with introducing answers to the many mysteries that come about. It is a well-developed story, taking place in a very believable future timeline, and works so well because of its thoroughly detailed and believable cast of characters.

As for the narration: it was superbly done. The narrator did a phenomenal job of differentiating amongst the many characters. There's many times where the nine team members are engaging and interacting in a scene, and never once did I struggle to tell them apart. On top of that, the emotion and intensity of certain scenes was always captured beautifully.

All-in-all, if a military sci-fi / future dystopian is your thing, and especially if you like character-driven work, I can't recommend this story enough

Vibes:
➤ Lots of Action
➤ Dystopian
➤ Military Tactics
➤ LQBT Representation

Thoughts:
A solid first in series from a debut author! This sci-fi dystopian novel was action packed with a smooth moving plot. Action picked up frequently, but was balanced with camaraderie between characters and internal character development. And what an ending!

Highlights:
➤ Character dialogue - Lee’s dialogue is fluid and natural. Her characters converse in a way that feels authentic and true to the person she is building.

➤ Light handed agenda - while there are deeper themes to Of Fiction, they are delivered in a way that does not feel preachy or heavy handed.

➤ Full cast of characters - while we (mostly) are reading from the POV of our MC, Sam, there is a full cast of characters that the reader becomes well acquainted with.

Of friction is the first of three books in the dystopian military sci-fi series: „Altered Earth“ written by debut author S.J.Lee.

This story has been waiting to be told and I am glad the author put it out there for us to enjoy.
S.J.Lee has a great way of bringing of the characters and her dystopian world to life.

As a reader you quickly become attached to the team of marines that are off to their next mission.
Tension runs high and you get sucked into the fast paced military action not wanting to put the book down at any time.
The romantic subplot was a nice addition to the action without taking too much away from the main story.

Over all it was a great read for a first book in a new series by a debut author that definitely leaves the reader eager for more. I can‘t wait to see how the story and characters will move on in Book 2.

A fast paced, action-packed ride! "Of Friction" had me on the edge of my seat several times. It is an impressive debut novel and I am definitely excited to continue this series.

While I haven't read a lot of military themed novels, I am very fond of dystopian ones. Lee managed to create a unique and captivating universe that makes you want to know more. And even though good world building is important, to me it is often more crucial that the the characters I read about don't fall behind. In this case, the author manages to write rich, nuanced and interesting characters.
It was hard to put this book down and I'm very excited to read more by this author.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book hooked me so well so early on and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I quickly fell in love with each of the characters and was always rooting for them, grieving with them, even getting stressed out with them. The plot was very well-paced, and each chance I got to sit down with this book, I thoroughly enjoyed every bit that I read. I can’t wait to read more from this author and I highly recommend this book to other sci-fi fans! I received a free eARC of this, and am choosing to leave an honest review.

“Of Friction” by S.J. Lee is set in a world that humans have destroyed. Ironically, science is humanity’s last hope to create a more adaptable and evolved race to survive in the remaining conditions of Earth. The necessary creation of these altered humans brings with them extraordinary survival abilities, adaptable resilience, and a more advanced line of genetically altered humans. However, despite this new race being engineered as a means to survive what remains of Earth, the original hominids and these Altered clash as they each seek to maintain power.

Sam “Valkryie” Ryan and her half-brother Scott “Mute” Reckert and are known across the lands as a reputable recon duo, affectionately called the Golden Twins for their golden-blond hair, their only similar feature. On contract with the United Military Federation (UMF), Scott and Sam are sent to assist the Razor-Echo team. Despite being a temporary team assignment, Scott has notified Sam that it will be his last, a blinding revelation as Sam came into Scott’s life when he was eleven years old and has aspired to join UMF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) as he had. As one of the youngest to ever join UMF, she’s worked alongside Scott for seven years and can’t believe he’d give it all up just two contracts shy of a Command-provided acre of pensioned land to retire on.

Amidst Scott’s final mission, Sam is determined with her own agenda to convince Scott to stay. This all plays out across the backdrop of the important upcoming Summit which promises an official effort to create lasting peace between Humans and Altered. With UMF being the only overarching force to protect all of humankind, it is up to team Razor-Echo to achieve mission success as all reinforcements are tied up with the Summit.

Author S.J. Lee opens the Altered Earth series with a succinct background on the fate of Earth. Providing just enough detail and character background to hook the reader, while leaving us yearning for a prequel or more on the relationship between Sam and half-brother Scott. “Of Friction” encapsulates an action-packed sci-fi adventure as Sam battles the news of her brother’s early exit and the dynamics of her temporary team. Amidst the sabotage, unlikely support, and presence of Children of Charon, is an extremely slow-building LGBTQ+ relationship in which readers will feel the ever-building tension and spark.

Lee creates an incredible sense of visual detail through her words. This book follows like a movie in your head, complete with visuals, sounds, and feelings coming alight as you read. Despite Lee not considering herself a writer, she sure did a fantastic job in this debut and series opener.

Ending in epic fashion, “Of Friction” by S.J. Lee leaves readers yearning for more as book two cannot come soon enough!

“War is too messy to produce easy heroes and villains; there are always brave people on the wrong side, and evil men among the victors, and a mass of perfectly ordinary people struggling to survive and understand in between." - Ben Macintyre

4.5/5 stars, rounded up.

As a general rule, I don't read military sci-fi. It too often sways towards war propaganda, uber nationalism, and distills what must represent one of the messiest of human experiences into clear boundaries of right and wrong. S.J. Lee's Of Friction is not that. Instead, it's a treat of an exploration into characters and situations that are left messy, morally gray, and that defy the quick definitions that so often accompanies the genre. The phrase "whose truth", repeated at key moments in the narrative, exemplifies this. War defies categorization and to a certain extent, understanding, and Lee seems to embrace this fully.

If there is one element that Of Friction does well though, it's the characters. Lee has a fantastic grasp of how to write believable characters that feel unique and whole. Their actions felt coherent, expected, and with that right amount of internal conflict and flaws to underline the human experience. Reading this very much felt like having a front seat to real people experiencing war and conflict. For a debut, this is seriously impressive work.

I did finish the book feeling like I just got done with a prologue to a much wider world. I wish there had been more explanation of the Altered, more clarity of the world and technology as it stands, but from the work I've seen so far, I'm certain these will come out in the subsequent books. I'll definitely be reading them to see where this story heads!

I found Of Friction through SPSFC4, where both our books were quarterfinalists, and I'm glad I earmarked this one for a read. I'd highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys morally gray sci-fi, or character-driven sci-fi in general, and that isn't afraid of a bit of blood and gore. Well done, S.J. Lee!

‘Of Friction’ is a military sci-fi novel set in a world ravaged by climate change and dwindling resources - the solution for survival being genetically modified Altered humans that now live amongst the remaining regular humans. Against this backdrop we follow a sibling duo as they get paired with a ragtag team of marines on a mission to investigate the political conditions surrounding the Altered human v. human peace agreements.

Mixing military action and social commentary, this book masterfully explores the effects of war and political tension. Another reviewer explained it better, but it’s so much more than simply “military fiction” - it’s a commentary on the effects of war, it’s a study on the in/dependency it creates, and it’s a realistic reflection of the mess of emotions that you experience throughout. I truly commend the author on achieving all of the above within 400 pages (not to mention this being a debut).

The plot is moderately/fast paced and remains fairly tense, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat until the very last page (and beyond…)(far beyond…)

Our main characters, the siblings Sam and Scott, have an extremely strong relationship that is really well depicted throughout this story. The personalities of all the characters are so unique - you start recognising their distinct manners of speaking and behaving within the first few chapters.

I truly enjoyed reading about these characters, not only were they all memorable, but I especially appreciated the small details about them sprinkled throughout the book. The book is really well written so it’s quite easy to follow and understand the action and political landscape - even for those who know absolutely nothing about the military / military tactics. I personally finished the book in 2 days.

Book 2 releases in about a month and I truly cannot wait to see how this story unfolds even further!

With her debut novel, SJ Lee showcases skills as a writer. Of Friction presents a fully realized, lived-in post-apocalyptic world that thoughtfully grapples with complex themes of humanity, the self, and the costs of progress. In a climate-devastated future, Lee utilizes her diverse cast to full effect. Protagonist Sam Ryan faces deep moral dilemmas as she struggles with responsibility and her own identity. Lee weaves suspense with Sam's intense character drama adeptly, drawing the reader in from the first words. The narrative's pacing keeps the tension high throughout the book, and while Lee will slow the movement down on occasion, she excels at twists that pick things back up. Fans of N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy may enjoy the worldbuilding and political undertones, and for those who like intricate, messy humans, there is much to laud in this book's dynamic relationships and cinematic action; however, others who crave a narrative more sussed-out may yearn for a more black-and-white conflict. Even with this, though, Of Friction is a great work of science fiction, and worth a read.

NEXT BOOK, PLEASE! Forgive me for shouting, but wow, was Of Friction great. The world building of this mashup of CliFi, Dystopian, and Military Sci-Fi had me from the first chapter. Really well-crafted characters and a hard-to-put-down storyline. The ending was also *chef’s kiss*. (Thank goodness there’s another book out now, or else I would have just sat by my computer waiting for it to be released.)

Maybe it’s because I'm neurodivergent, but I got strong ND vibes from the golden siblings, Sam and Scott. I also like how Scott, who seems selectively speaking, reclaimed the word Mute as his callsign. And Sam’s way of stimming with routines and thumb scratching was relatable to my autistic brain. The queer representation is also a thumbs up for me because it just “was,” as it should be. And the nuanced conflict of the different communities of humans, altered humans, and sub-factions within the altered humans was messy in the best way. Because things aren’t always what they seem. I can’t believe this is S.J. Lee’s debut novel because she writes like a seasoned pro. (This is not a hobby, S.J. Lee! See? I read the back of the book too!)

This author is one to watch, folks!

This book and the author are both amazing! When she first sold it to me, she warned it was a slow burn. I never got bored for a second, though. The story was awesome and driven, the world building didn't feel like I was reading an encyclopedia, and the characters felt real and human. Her past training also made the characters be real military members in the book rather than simply glorified and dramatized visions. The book is worth the read, even if it's just for the amazing preface at the beginning. It only took me until page 30 to go back up and buy the second one. Can't wait for all the emotional pain!

I'll openly admit that I'm not the target audience for this sci-fi dystopian military fiction book.
However, that being said the writing is flawless, the characters highly likeable and the middle end half is pure exhilaration!
It's a slow build to get there. I'm just not a Sci fi fan but those who are will absolutely love this!

Impressive debut novel.
I enjoyed the characters and the action. Good pacing and solid storyline. Easy read but not fluff.
Towards the end the dialogue falters a bit in the more lighthearted scenes but author corrects tone quickly and sets us up for an epic next installment in this Altered Earth.
I enjoyed this thoroughly and look forward to Book 2

This is an action packed book that mixes character development, intense emotions of love and war, and still provides the thrill of reading the actions and gore of war. I am excited to see the next book and how the series develops since the ending leaves so many questions!

great introductory novel by new writer

Lee crafts a well-planned narrative with robust details that lend a vivid “lived-experience” to the text. The plot line moves at a brisk pace as the reader is introduced to characters and world construction. I will certainly read her next installment when it becomes available.

This book has been on my radar ever since I received an email from pride book tours about this book. I've been waiting to read this book for weeks and then got my hands on it. I'm really happy that I didn't miss out on this book. I loved it. It was extraordinary. It was everything I dreamed of what it could be (yk the dystopian world, what if and all) and more.

The descriptions in this book were off the chart! It wasn't just that I felt like I was watching a movie in my head, it felt like I was there watching their conversation as an invisible person. This book has a major thing that makes me want to revisit, its family concept!!

The descriptions and the characters were really strong especially sam, I was instantly immersed in the story and connected to the characters from the beginning. I loved the pace and character development in this book.

For me, i loved the detailed writing and also need to mention that descriptive language is incredible. Author provides an extremely vivid and a full sensory experience while reading line by line, completely engaging the reader. I look forward to reading more from the author.

The characters seemed more compelling to me, there's so many side characters that I loved in this book. As the story sets in a dystopian world, it makes us worry a lot about our two strong leads. The ending really affected me, I've been thinking about it for days. Go read it. Whether you like it or not, you will not regret reading it.

What a ride! Of friction is jam packed with character development balanced with high stakes action, all of which leaves you wanting more.

The story was incredibly character driven, which is one of my favorite things in a book. This feeds into a world that is well built and flows easily, there’s no clunky exposition to slow things down or take you out of the moment. I loved the steady world building that built up the tension between the humans and altered - especially the altered legionnaires 👀

If you like strong characters, dystopian conflict, and a dash of romance then this book will hit the spot. Excited to see more in the sequel!

Like if everything we’re afraid is going to happen happens and a lil gay over it all and good people still exist

Some jargon was hard to keep up with but honestly probably a me problem and that’s world-building, baby
