Poetry. Women's Studies. African American Studies. "She writes... with the honesty of a survivor and the elegance of a stylist. Whether satirizing... or keening... or offering her own story with irony and gracefulness, her Voices are promising poems. I recommend that readers read them, and recommend that she write more."—Christopher Bernard

I woke up very early one morning and picked up this book next to my bed, thinking I'd read for a few moments and fall back to sleep. No way. The clever and engaging short stories that populate this book kept me rapt for a good long time. I guess that's both an enticement and a warning. This Jeanne Powell is a good writer and her observations denote a mind of depth and experience. She has a way of capturing the drama in what otherwise seem like "ordinary" moment. Check it out.
