No other contemporary songwriter has created a body of work of such consistent quality, and such singular emotional and intellectual brilliance, as Leonard Cohen. His smoke-black vocal style navigates the most sophisticated and arresting of melodies in songs infused with romance, innuendo, and humor.
Arriving at the '60s pop-music party fashionably late, Cohen released his debut album – Songs of Leonard Cohen – in 1967. At 33 years of age, he was the adult in the room, a room brimming, then as now, with literary pretension and artistic self-importance. But Cohen, already established as a respected poet and novelist, was the real deal. In the decades since, he has battled with drugs, love, and bankruptcy; become a Buddhist monk while simultaneously reaffirming his Jewish faith; and recorded 11 more albums of unfailingly affecting beauty.
Beginning with Cohen the young poet and author in his home town of Montreal and ending with his 2012 release – Old Ideas – and recent acclaimed live performances, Everybody Knows honors Leonard Cohen's 80th birthday by celebrating his genius and tracing his rise to stardom through 200 photographs and the thoughts, memories, and reflections of those who have both worked with and been inspired by him.
Harvey Kubernik, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, is a veteran music journalist whose work has been published nationally in Melody Maker, The Los Angeles Free Press, Crawdaddy, Musician, Goldmine, MIX, The Los Angeles Times, and MOJO, among other publications. As a West Hollywood and Laurel Canyon insider, he has unparalleled access to the sources, personalities, and even those who are still based in the beauty of the Canyon. Ray Manzarek was co-founder and keyboardist of The Doors and, along with other members of that seminal band, is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He continues as an active and touring rock n roll performer along with ex-Doors member Robby Krieger and has performed over the decades with Iggy Pop and poet Michael McClure. He has produced music with Echo and the Bunnymen and the band X."
The life and work of the famous poet, songwriter and singer are detailed in this book.
I thought this book was beautifully put together and even though it wasn’t pack full of details I felt I got a sense of the man and learnt many new things about him.
(Da das Buch bereits 2014 erschien, fehlt natürlich das letzte Meisterwerk, "You Want It Darker".)
A fine coffee table book with lots of pictures and an overview of his career (up to 2013). It’s not that in depth and is mostly a compendium of other sources but the construction is nice and it’s worth it for fans. Not a definitive look or anything but a pleasant coles notes version.
Loads of great photos. The information comes from a variety of sources who knew LC personally - some of it from other biographers so, to me, it was not new information but the pictures are fantastic.
Full of facts and photos. I loved the style of presentation which was through interviews with many people who had known or worked with Leonard Cohen. Excellent references to different www. at the end, and a full run down on who played what on all the LPs/Cds. Which I like. I always read the LPs at parties. Singles, Eps, and books. A vital book for anyone interested in Leonard Cohen.
