Simply Scandalous

Rate this book
He runs in high-society circles ... and he's running circles around her heart.

In retrospect, it was all Gran's fault.

Logan Montgomery has found his niche as an assistant district attorney. But Gran just revealed some worrying intel--dear old dad and his political cronies are about to maneuver him into running for mayor.

But Gran has a plan. A pre-emptive strike involving a pretty blonde caterer with supple curves--and a family history literally dripping with scandal. There's just one flaw in his grandmother's scheme: Logan's not a player. And there's a delicious spark of attraction that makes him want to try for something special with Catherine Luck.

It's a mystery to Catherine why Logan, who sits at the very top of the social ladder, would even look twice at someone like her. Maybe he has a thing for disgraced, overworked caterers. But his gentle concern, delivered in that velvety chocolate voice, can't be real, and Cat knows better than to mix business with pleasure.

Raw desire and genuine affection unexpectedly tip them into forbidden territory--love. Until Catherine gets a stark reminder that the Montgomerys never do anything without an ulterior motive.

Which means Catherine's luck in love is about to run out ...

Wow, another great read by Carly Phillips. Logan Montgomery is doing his best to live his life the way that he wants, not the way that his father would prefer. Catherine Luck is finally running the catering business that she has always wanted. When she meets Logan while working at a function that his family is throwing, there is an undeniable attraction. She believes that she is not good enough for him, while all he wants is her in his life. With a meddling grandmother and everything working against them, they are able to find their own happily ever after on their terms. Such a great story!

"Simply Scandalous" is the sequel to "Simply Sinful" but you don't necessarily have to have read the first to enjoy the second. Here, Catherine Luck meets Logan Montgomery and worlds collide. She's got major abandonment issues and doesn't trust a man who promises her anything. He's got baggage in the form of an arrogant and overbearing father who thinks he knows best and a meddling grandmother. He's from money and high society, she's from the wrong side of the tracks and has worked her way up to where she is now. Cat can't see how anything can happen between them but Logan is determined to change her mind.

Like in "Simply Sinful" the chemistry and attraction between the main characters is there from the beginning. Cat and Logan connect with fireworks from the start and you can't wait to see how they'll get past the obstacles in their way to get a happily ever after. Logan has his work cut out for him since Cat keeps trying to come up with reasons they can't work, but- with a little help from his grandmother- he's more than up for the challenge. It's heartbreaking to imagine how Cat has lived convinced she can never count on anyone but her sister, and equally heartbreaking to see how Logan may have is family around him, but emotionally there are major pieces missing.

"Simply Scandalous" has been updated from an earlier version of the story and should appeal to all Carly Phillips fans. A classic with engaging characters and family drama, this is why so many of us fell in love with Carly Phillips' stories.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a reread for me, although it's definitely been long enugh since I read Logan and Catherine's story that it felt new.

It's also been updated, just a little, from the original, allowing it to feel like "classic" Carly Phillips but also like it's new and updated for the times.

Catherine is a little down on her luck (pun intended) after the discovery in the 1st book that her family business is actually a front for organized crime, but she is doing her best to make things work and doesn't think that Logan, who is from a rich and prominent family, will want anything to do with her.

But, he does, and the life he lives and the things he values end up surprising her and she realizes that it's definitely possible for there to be a happily ever after at the end of their story.

The getting to the HEA is a little predictable, but not in a way that ruins the fun of the story.

I enjoyed and recommend this title.

Bastante entretenido!!

ARGUMENTO:

Normally, I'd have probably enjoyed this book more. The story was a bit rote, but nothing that couldn't have been saved with a little nuance or individualism. Unfortunately, the tension in this story revolves around a deeply ingrained classism and unquestioning political tropes that are just a little too intrusive to be tolerable. Logan is a plastic, one-dimensional strawman, at best. A lawyer from a well-to-do family who chooses to "live off his earnings" and ignore his trust-fund. His earnings, mind, as a public defender where he works because he wants to "protect people, not corporations". If that's not mindlessly dogmatic enough, his father is a conservative judge pushing his son into a political career, even though Logan has repeatedly told him he doesn't want that.

I suppose if I were a liberal woman, I'd be drooling, but there's just no hint of nuance here. It wouldn't have taken much to improve, either. Maybe admitting that Logan represents the occasional criminal? He can even be torn up about it, but at least give this pronounced aspect of his life some depth. Or let his dad soften up even just a little bit, ever. But no, we're meant to take these tropes as shorthand for how wonderful Logan is and how much he doesn't partake of the presumably evil heart of his "class".

And did I mention the classism? The worst aspect of the book's classist attitude is how often Cat expresses the blind assertion that they couldn't possibly make it because they're from different classes. Even though Logan eschews every trapping of his upbringing. Even though his lifestyle is barely different from her own. And even though he is so eager to make compromises for her to make her feel comfortable in the life he has chosen—a life, remember, that is middle-class to the core.

And Cat's no great catch, either. She's so damaged from growing up without a father that several times she walks away from a shared relationship with the man she acknowledges that she loves, and who she knows loves her, just because it might not work out. Yeah, daddy issues can be complex and deeply ingrained, but I thought this went on way past where you could reasonably be expected to have sympathy with it. Grew up without a father and resent it? Then make sure you don't marry a bum! Again, this might have worked better if the author had cared enough to give a little more depth to Cat's neurosis. If a former boyfriend hurt her, maybe. Or a friend with a husband who walked away after producing children. It's not like there wasn't room in this already-short book for a little added detail.

The book isn't a complete disaster. The writing is competent, at any rate. But while not a complete disaster, this book just left me cold. I really wish it hasn't been my first experience of Carly Phillips. I'm not sure I want to chance another, even as I hope and suspect they aren't all so very shallow.

I loved that Logan may have come from money and prestige, but he didn’t want any part of it and wanted to make a life for him on his own. Of course that didn’t stop his father from still trying to run his life. I loved his wonderful and crazy grandmother who wanted what’s best for Logan. She was so funny in the ways she butted in to help Logan. His grandmother is how Logan met Catherine when Catherine catered a garden party for Logan’s grandmother. The two were attracted to each other, but Catherine didn’t want to have anything to do with Logan as she came from a lower class family with some scandal. I loved watching Logan try to show Catherine how much they were really alike. I enjoyed the book and encourage you to read it. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

Logan Montgomery: Assistant DA; family of judges and politicians and money; he wants to make his own way – living off of what he makes, not joining the prestigious law group his father arranged for him, etc; father currently trying to railroad him into running for mayor; He doesn't want to do this. He just wants to open his own law firm.

Emma Montgomery: Logan’s grandmother; where Logan’s parents were stiff and more interested in image, Emma actively loved Logan and Grace – disciplining them, having fun with them, etc… after meeting Catherine, she decides she would be good for Logan, and would be the way out his father’s pushing him into politics (after Catherine’s aunt was connected to prostitution and mobsters – scandal), so she arranges for Catherine and her Pot Luck catering to cater her Garden Gala;

Judge Edgar Montgomery and Annette Montgomery: stiff; a marriage of convenience, not love; appearance is all to them… and Edgar can’t see his son’s true self, thinking he has to maneuver him into correct choices;

Catherine Ann Luck: graduated from chef school and has started Pot Luck; doesn’t trust men to be there – after all her father left when they were young; and she’s very aware of the class differences between herself and Logan;

I really enjoyed this book I like stories where someone goes from rags to riches.

This book is an easy, light read—perfect for a relaxing weekend. The witty banter kept me entertained, however, it didn’t quite stand out as one of her best for me. The plot felt a bit predictable.

I really enjoyed this story of a couple who was brought together by a very sneaky grandmother Emma to Logan. She wants to see him married off before she dies. Off course she healthy as an ox now after a mild heart attack which she uses to her advantag. She meets Cat & likes her instantly & knows with her shady background that she could kill two birds with one stone. Get her grandson off the fast track that his father want Logan on to be mayor & give him a scandal at the same time by falling for Cat. Things go hay wire because Cat has trust issues & when they are by themselves all is good but when the outside world gets in Prince Charming does not seem to meet her fears with the press jumping into the mix during a touchy moment. This is a good book I recommend.

ARC for honest review with no compensation Received from BookSprout

Simply Scandalous is book 2 in the Simply series by Carly Phillips and has been rewritten and re-released.

Up next is Catherine “Cat” Luck, caterer and Logan Montgomery, Assistant District Attorney meet at a social garden party Cat is catering and his influential grandmother planned for family and political counterparts of his father.

Sparks fly, social status, scheming (the good kind), no fraternizing at the function, steamy, scandal and so much more…can’t wait for the next book in this series!

As for the previous one, it's rather poor in terms of plot, of characters' study.
The hero and heroine are once again supposed to fall in love with each other, with a great depth of feeling, because they really understood who the other is beneath his deceptive appearance and façade, all that while they have not talked yet or not more than 50 words, but have just looked at each other.
There were however some better moments than expected later on in the story.

*An advance reading copy was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.*

Logan Montgomery is an Assistant District Attorney, who even though he comes from a long line of Judges and Politicians, is living off his salary and trying to keep out of the Political eye, even if his father has other ideas for him. He is coerced by his Grandmother Emma to show up at their family’s Garden Gala. Logan will do anything for one of the only family members who have always shown him love and affection.

Catherine Luck, the owner of Pot Luck, has been brought in to cater the Montgomery Garden Gala. What she doesn’t realize is that’s not all she’s been brought in to do. Emma realizes that Catherine can also help thwart Logan’s father’s plans for him, especially since Catherine’s family has been surrounded by scandal in recent years. If something were to happen between Catherine and Logan, and it was captured by the media, then Logan’s father would have to give up.

Not that Logan needs any help by his meddling, but loving, Grandmother to notice Catherine. She definitely stands out in the crowd. When she’s left stranded by her crew at the Montgomery place, Logan offers to take Catherine home. Of course, a huge storm breaks and Catherine has no choice but to spend the night at Logan’s place. That’s all Logan needs to make inroads with Catherine. But one night isn’t enough.

When his father makes it virtually impossible to have any kind of relationship with Catherine, Emma steps into the middle and tries to smooth out the damage her son has caused. But Logan realizes it’s on him to get Catherine to trust him. Will Catherine realize that what Logan says is what he means? Will she understand that not everyone leaves? Can Logan make his father back off so he and Catherine can live their own lives together? I also love that we also got an update on Kayla (Catherine’s sister) and Kane from Simply Sinful (book one in this series).

This is the 2nd in the Sinful series being remade and released by Carly and it was as delightful hot read.

Catherine Luck has worked hard to get her catering business off the ground and successful and she can't believe her LUCK that she has been hired by one of the most influential families in the area of Boston to cater the family Garden Party. She knows this will be the one job that will solidify her place and make her business the best it can be. Little does she know the matriarch of the Montgomery family has a little plan of her own for Catherine!

Logan Montgomery, son of the affluent Judge Montgomery wants nothing to do with the trapping of his family name. A man who struck out on his own, is a public defender and lives on his salary rather than his trust is not looking forward to another of his Gran's garden parties. But as the only one who actually cares about him and he loves unconditionally, he gives in and makes the trip to the family estate. Again, Gran has a plan all her own for her number one grandson.

The moment Logan lays eyes on Catherine he's intrigued with the beauty and thinks the party may not be so bad after all. The smoldering chemistry is unmistakable between the two but when the Judge reminds Catherine of her place as a caterer an to not fraternize with the guests she knows nothing can happen. She won't put herself in that position to be hurt, she has learned in life not to trust easily or that she deserves that happily ever after.

This is a great fun read and you will root for Logan all along to win the heart of the beautiful Cat, he's not at all what she thinks he is and soon her heart is engaged, something she never wanted but can't help. Then along comes a scandal and she's not sure she can trust Logan after all. Follow the steamy romance with attraction that can be denied to their happily ever after.

I really enjoyed this story. I enjoyed both sisters books but I would have to say this one was my favorite.
Catherine and her sister Kayla own a catering company. Catherine was hired by Emma, to cater the annual Garden Gala party for the Montgomery family.
Emma is the grandmother of Logan, the assistant district attorney, and the mother to Judge Montgomery, Logan’s father. Emma hired Catherine for one reason, to help Logan with his father’s pursuit to get Logan to run for Mayor. What Emma didn’t expect but is not disappointed to find out is that Logan is attracted to Catherine and wants more than to use her family name for his gain.
Catherine is not trying to find a man to help keep her bed warm. And she is definitely not looking for a rich man. But Logan has other thoughts about that.
Logan is attracted to Catherine but in no means wants to use her. So if his father wants him to run for Mayor, he has another thing coming because Logan is happy in his job and has no intentions of running for Mayor. What Logan does plan on doing is pursuing Catherine, the attractive woman who is catering this event.
Attraction between Catherine and Logan is off the charts HOT! Can Catherine let her walls down and believe Logan when he says he wants more with her than a one night stand? Or will she give up the one man that can make her dreams come to.
Can Logan convenience Catherine that his words are as truthful as his heart? Or will he lose the one woman he has ever loved? LOVE HEA!!!

This is re-published from the author's 2001 publication under the same title. New cover, updated with some minor story changes. This can be read as a standalone book. The heroine from this book is the sister of the heroine from the first in the Simply series.

Cat went to culinary school and she and her sister have opened a growing catering company. The story opens with a big party that Cat hopes will make a positive impression on the wealthy clientele attending so she gets new business.

She meets Logan Montgomery there. His Grandma hopes to see the two hook up because Cat's family has some skeletons in their closet and Logan's Dad is pushing him to run for Mayor as a stepping stone in a political career. Logan has repeatedly told him he has no interest in that but his Dad is trying to railroad him anyhow. Grandma Emma thinks Cat is a lovely person and her reputation will keep Logan from being squeaky clean to run for an office.

Their is a lot of angst as they try to see if they can build a relationship. Many trust issues. Social class problems and other problems. More relationship building and less angst would have been my preference but they get to their HEA.

Despite coming from very different backgrounds, Logan and Catherine are immediately drawn to each other when they first meet at an event hosted by Logan's grandmother Grant. Logan is the one chosen to carry out his father's ambitious plans by running for mayor, though he himself is anything but ambitious and simply wants to live life on his own terms ... being down to earth and helping the poor and destitute.
Catherine comes from the wrong side of the tracks, but has worked her way up with her recently established catering business. Because of her past experiences, she doesn't trust anyone easily, not even the handsome, well-connected, and swoon-worthy Logan ... or so she thought ... But as things heat up and Logan's family meddles, things threaten to get ugly and scandalous ...
Catherine and Logan's story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. There's this kind of chemistry between the two that threatened to burn my e-reader. It's a page-turner and I had to read it in one go because these characters are just too compelling.

The second in the series did not disappoint. What's a little scandal between two people thrown together due the Machiavellian efforts of a meddling old woman. Don't let Emma know I called her that, for a grand mother she's a little bit scary in her tactics. But you have to appreciate that her efforts are to help get her grandson settled.
Catherine Luck is finally at a place where her business PotLuck is starting to flourish. And booking the garden Gala at the Montgomery estate is a coup d'etat. She just couldn't have predicted that Emma Montgomery would consider her a worthy partner for her grandson Logan.
Logan is smitten from the moment he sets eyes on Cat. And he's determined to show her that he's more than a trust fund and they're more alike than she can imagine. Resisting their attraction doesn't make sense and getting to know each other outside of the forces in place is the best decision they can make.

This is the second book in this series but defiantly can be read as a stand-alone. Catherine or Cat Luck is the younger sister of Kayla who we met in Simply Sinful. Cat is an amazing chef and she has opened a catering company with her sister. Right now Kayla is married to Sheriff Kane and is pregnant and on bed rest so Cat is running the catering company all by herself. She receives a call from Emma Montogmery to cater her tea and it is the biggest party she has served yet. At this party, she meets Logan Montogmery the grandson of Emma and the son of one of the biggest judges. This judge and his wife both happen to be snobs. Emma has decided that her grandson and Cat will make the perfect couple so she is playing matchmaker... with a side of "stick it in her son the Judge".
This book has lots of feel goods and fun things. Cat and Logan in my opinion are certainly the perfect match. But she needs to see this before love can win out.

In the first book, we were introduced to Catherine and saw how protective of her sister she was. She always had her claws out. I really love the Luck sisters. Book two is Catherine's story. Her personality shines through and it does not go unnoticed. Logan is mesmerized by Catherine and I instantly fall for Logan. He is sweet and caring. He lives life as simple as he can. But what will he do when the Judge tries to make him live a different life? The angst of will he stay or leave Catherine had me on edge!

I also have to mention that I loved Logan's meddling grandmother. She had me cracking up and really lightened this story.

Simply Scandalous is a #mustread. I am excited these books are being rereleased so other readers have a chance to read this series for the first time just like this reader.

Simply Scandalous is the second book in the Simply Series. It looks like there are going to be 5 books in this series and somehow I missed the first book of this series. I didn’t find it hard to read as a standalone but now that I have read this book I want to go back and read the first book in this series.
This series was originally published under Harlequin. It is a pleasant surprise that Carly Phillips first started out as a Harlequin author and that she had been around that long.

This is Logan Montgomery and Catherine Lucks story. First off I love, love, love Logan’s meddling grandmother. Everyone needs a grandma like that.

I loved reading this story and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Here is the Simply Series Order:
Simply Sinful Book 1
Simply Scandalous Book 2
Simply Sensual Book 3
Body Heat Book 4 - I am not sure about this one - it is per Goodreads but not listed in Simply Scandalous at the end of the book.
Simply Sexy Book 5

Logan is right where he wants to be as an assistant district attorney, he's not looking to make changes anytime soon. He soon learns that his father has bigger political aspirations for him and wants to start with him running for mayor. His gran is out to help him as best she can and she has found the perfect candidate whose.background is filled with scandal. Logan meets Catherine and is instantly attracted to her, he is a one woman man and can't be the player his gran thinks he should be to get out of his dads new scheme. Catherine doesn't understand how a man like Logan would even take a second look at her. The two share an amazing connection that could truly stand the test of time it just needs them.both to work towards the same thing. Will the two follow their hearts or will they be lead astray by outside forces? I wonderful and romantic read that will have you believing in true love.

I love grandmothers and Emma Montgomery is at the top of my list. She's more than a little feisty with a wicked sense of humor. She's plotted something devious to help her grandson Logan not only escape the plans his father has for him but also with a bit of luck have him fall in love.

Catherine is overseeing this major party for Emma, it's a huge stepping stone for her catering business. She never expected the grandson of the hostess to be interested in her. Let alone have her own libido go off the charts.

Logan's father wants him to run for mayor and he is most persistent about it. Logan, on the other hand, wants no part of politics. Although he didn't want to involve Catherine his father makes an awkward move and they all get caught up in it.

Plenty of fun, laughter, a sniffle or two and sizzle in this book.

Logan was raised in an affluent lifestyle and his parents have groomed him to follow their dreams of him having a political career however that is not the path he wants for himself and wants to use his legal skills to help those who need it the most.

Catherine has a difficult past and is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after family secrets are revealed. She is hoping that the catering company she has started will give her the fresh start that she needs. She meets Logan at an event that she is catering and there is no denying the chemistry between them but is it enough to overcome their very different lifestyles?

Catherine believes that she is not a suitable match for Logan and his parents share the same opinion but Logan knows that she is exactly who he needs in his life and isn’t about to let her go with a fight.
