How serious are we in our fight against sin? In The Pursuit of Holiness, Jerry Bridges shows us what it means to strive for our sanctification.

In 17 chapters, Bridges helps us understand what it means to be holy by God’s standards, and how we are not helpless in our battle against sin. This warfare language is prevalent in the text, and it is a call to take our Christian lives seriously.

The Help of the Holy Spirit

Jesus is the subject of chapter 4, and it is his righteousness that is the basis of our salvation. His perfect life, death, and resurrection have achieved the victory – but we still fight in guerrilla warfare with our sinful nature.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can be dead to sin and alive to God by living a life of obedience. Conviction and commitment are the keys to putting sin to death. Personal discipline means that we hear, read, study, memorize Scripture to aid us in the fight against sin.

Holy Habits

Bridges brings indulgence of food, drink, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, idolatry, and materialism as sins we must confront. To keep our sinful desires under control, we must discipline our bodies and fight the temptation to be soft and lazy. Bitterness, an unforgiving spirit, a spirit of retaliation, and a critical spirit are more subtle sins that must still be put to death -- and I appreciate how Bridges addresses them in this book.

As we build up holy habits, our faith is strengthened, bringing further conviction and better confidence. Personal holiness in an unholy world is ultimately possible because of the joy that comes from a holy life and a desire to please the Lord.

For Small Groups and Discipleship

The book I received was a discipleship resource edition, joining the full text of the book with a 12-week small group curriculum. I believe that the fight for holiness cannot be done alone, and I strongly encourage this book to be studied in a group. There are wide margins for note-taking, discussion questions, and a guide for group leaders and class teachers.

In the group sessions, additional Bible passages are suggested for study, with prompts that correlate directly with the text in the book. The questions are personal. For instance: "Compare your own thought life with the standard set for us in Philippians 4:8. What types of thoughts do you need to avoid? What types of thoughts do you want to cultivate?" We need this type of directness and clarity when confronting our sin.

Look Like Christ

In a world where we have seen churches and pastors fall deep into sin, we need to see that our fight for holiness is not an option. The battle begins in our heads and hearts and ends with our lives truly changed by the Gospel. We have a responsibility to pursue holiness. And when we find it, we will see ourselves more in love and looking like Christ.

I received a media copy of The Pursuit of Holiness and this is my honest review.
