Sometimes, the smallest things in life can take up the most room in your heart…

Warren Park

Society called him “the underdog” until he became one of the most sought-after athletes in the country. At the time, Warren Park was well on his way to becoming the future of English football—but after a career-ending injury cut his dreams short, the only thing people call him now is “Coach.”

Never in a million years did Warren think that standing on the sidelines could fulfill a part of himself that longed to be back on the pitch. That changed after he acquired the Head Coach role at Crawfield Football Club—a small, poor-performing team located south of London.

Crawfield FC is Warren’s second chance, a fresh start, and under no circumstances will he allow anything to get in the way of that. Not money, not status, not greed and especially not…love.

Delaney Matthews

She’s a socialite with a life of luxury and following to match, but after the passing of her beloved Gramps—the only person who truly understood her, Delaney realizes that the richness of life can’t be defined by the swipe of a card.

In the aftermath of Gramps’ passing, the Matthews family discovers that amongst one of his many assets is Crawfield FC—the English football club he devoted his life to. Seeing the team as of no value, her parents decide that selling it for quick cash is the only way to proceed. But letting go of Crawfield FC would mean letting go of the final piece that ties her to Gramps; a sacrifice Delaney’s unwilling to make.

With three months to turn the team’s fate around, Delaney’s met with her biggest challenge yet. Not a new country, not a new job, but a grumpy football coach who proves that in order to play the game, she’ll have to play by his rules.

I absolutely adored this book! I devoured it in one day and had the best time giggling and kicking my feet! Delaney Matthews was actually such a funny FMC!

I am no stranger to sports romance novels but this was my first soccer romance and the first sports romance l've read that was about the team's coach.

Thank you so much to Kate Lauren for sending me this book as an ARC, I really enjoyed it and think so many others will too!

JUNE ‘24: 3.5 stars - I did enjoy the premise of this, I just needed more! I needed more character and plot development, probably another 50-100 pages, and more proofreading if I’m honest! (there were a lot of grammar errors).

I was so excited for the football aspect of this and I would’ve loved to have seen a Crawfield match take place, see Warren on the sidelines and Delaney cheering them on; this didn’t really feel like a sports romance.

PRE-REVIEW: so Kate Lauren is writing a series now? A sports romance? With football? set in the UK? (where I’m from) Sign me the fuck up.

side note: I must read A Recipe for Disaster ASAP but I’m lowkey not over the masterpiece that was To You, Iyla.

This was my first time reading one of Kate’s books & it certainly won’t be my last.

Being someone from the UK, I love the way football has been represented in this book.

Synopsis:
When Delaney’s grandfather passed away she takes it upon herself to improve the football club he once owned knowing how much it meant to him. She is given three months to improve the team, otherwise her family will sell the club. After moving to England, Delaney starts working with the team as their PR manager, revamping the teams image & getting them more publicity. Delaney butts heads with the teams grumpy head coach, Warren Park, but there is a lot of feeling’s Warren is hiding behind his grumpy exterior.

I completely fell in love with the characters that Kate created in this story. From the main characters, Delaney & Warren to the side characters such as the team & Alf.

Delaney is a character that ain’t afraid to chase after what she wants. I loved that she was fiery & teasing towards Warren. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind either. At times, she was forward about thing which went hand in hand with her knowing her worth & knowing what she wants.

Warren was super grumpy which I really love in an mmc. There is nothing more fun than reading about a man with a grumpy exterior but when you hit his pov you get all the feelings & care that he really feels.

Kate did an amazing job with the side characters of this book. Even though in a football team there is usually 11 players, Kate exclusively focussed on 3 main players which really helped to not over complicate things.
The banter between the team was so good that you felt like you were apart of their group.

This book actually made me cry quite a few times which I didn’t expect. I think part of it was Delaney following her Gramp’s legacy but the other part was seeing how much Gramp’s meant to Warren & vice versa.

The found family in this book was greatly written too. I felt the love between all the characters.

The locker room scene👀 IYKYK. I love that the spice didn’t overtake the story & there were only a few key scenes.

I’m excited for the next book to come out which I can only assume will be Wilk’s book.

I completely forgot to post this review when I originally read the book but I wanted to make sure I got a full review out because I absolutely LOVED every second of this book! I absolutely devoured it in just a few hours and I think this might be what kicked off my sports romance era this March 🤭

These characters were so wonderful to learn about and explore and the romance was incredible steamy and had me sucked in from the beginning.

I will say I’m definitely not a soccer/ football girly, as much as my boyfriend wishes I was…. but I think this book may changed my tune a little 💞⚽️

⚽️💚 The Underdog - ARC/Beta Review💚⚽️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If any of you know a thing about me you will KNOW anything Kate Lauren writes, I will read. Girly idk what you put in these books but you got me HOOKED.

I love the whole journey both Warren and Delaney find themselves on throughout the underdog, and their development as people is truly truly beautiful.

They both have a familial bond to the late owner of Crawfield Football Club, Ira. Warren worked very closely with Ira at the club, and Ira was Delaney’s grandfather.

Ira left the club to Delaney after his passing, and wanting a fresh start for herself and to do something with her grandfathers legacy, she jumps at the chance to go across the pond.

Delaney’s lack of exposure to the English slang and culture had me howling the whole way through. From her discovering the difference in taxi services from the US to the UK, to the train lines (subway as she would say), I absolutely loved it.

The rapport and friendship she developed with the lad from Crawley warmed my heart! As a Brit myself I can hand on heart say kids here can be absolute arseholes sometimes, but for a lot of them they have such a soft interior and, Kate, you have encapsulated this perfectly.

Warren (or should I say coach👀😉) tugged on my heartstrings more than I’d like to admit, and as cold as he came across to begin with, I found myself more and more engrossed in his character.

Time and time again with sports romances, it’s hockey this or NFL that and I found it so so refreshing to get on board with one featuring the biggest English sport. Kate you have truly outdone yourself (I know I say this a LOT) but honestly your works are one upping themselves with each and every release. I am so, so proud of you and so thankful we have connected through this little corner of the internet. You my girl are going places and I cannot wait to continue cheerleading for your success💚

The Underdog, available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited April 1st⚽️💚

(on my birthday & y’all best believe I’m ordering a paperback as soon as I am physically able)

PS: TU is the first in a series of interconnected standalones.. who oh who will be up next?👀👀

This book was sooo gooood
I love the lads, but especially Wilks. Oh my god, he's the golden side character
The way he fought with Warren to make him understand that he loves Delaney and that he should go after her
The way all of them loved heeeerrrrrr
This book is just a ray of sunshine

But I guess with that, my romance battery is full, and I'm done with romcoms for now.

📖 The Underdog by Kate Lauren

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"The Underdog” by Kate Lauren is a delightful foray into the world of sports romance, blending the thrill of the game with the complexities of love and career ambitions. The author crafts a narrative that is as much about personal growth as it is about the sparks that fly on and off the field.

Warren Park, with his brooding demeanor and a heart of gold, is the grumpy football coach who you can’t help but root for. His interactions with Delaney Matthews, the American PR manager determined to prove her worth, are charged with tension and emotion. Their dynamic evolves beautifully throughout the story, offering a satisfying slow burn that will appeal to romance enthusiasts.

Delaney’s challenge to save the Crawfield Football Club adds a layer of urgency to the plot, making her journey an inspiring tale of resilience. The backdrop of the football club is richly detailed, providing a vivid setting that will resonate with sports fans and newcomers alike.

Kate Lauren’s writing shines in her ability to create characters that are relatable and endearing. The secondary characters add depth to the story, hinting at future tales to be told in the series. The first book in a series, “The Underdog” sets a high bar and leaves me eagerly anticipating more.

“The Underdog” is a heartwarming, funny, and engaging sports romance that scores big on charm and character development. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves a good underdog story. 📚⚽💕

this book had me giggling and just on my tippy toes because i for one love a slow burn especially when there’s tension and the attraction is so heavy between the two characters and he’s the ultimate grump. warren park just needed love and he deserved it so much and im glad he found it in his team and delaney 🥺

delaney truly is sunshine, her nickname was fitting. reading this story and seeing how her and warren bonded and connected over her late grandpa and how the stars aligned for them to be a safe place for each other. god i just loved it so much. the sense of found family, delaney finding family and love when she didn’t receive it from her family. i cried.

warren park, my grumpy man. i love you so so much.

this book had me in the feels, i can’t wait to see more of these characters in future books of this series.

thank you kate lauren for the arc of this book!

this was my first football romance and i absolutely fell head over heels in love with this book. i was in awe of the characters, their relationship and if there’s a trope that will make me crumble, it’s a found family. this book is as engaging and fun as it is wholesome and swoon worthy

Delaney Matthew’s, our sassy socialite FMC was everything i want and more in a romance book. she was confident, witty and utterly iconic. Warren, our grumpy MMC was so heartwarmingly charming and watching them slowly fall in love made my heart completely melt

this book is a perfect blend of plot, character development and spice without losing the angst of an engaging slow burn romance. the bonds in this book are nothing short of beautiful and i adored the secondary characters more than anything

a fun and beautifully told sports romance filled with tension, compassion and longing. This book gave me everything and more, an absolutely stellar release from Kate for all you hopeless romantics out there <3

Kate does such an amazing job writing her characters. Reading her books feels like watching a movie play out right in front of me! Warren + Delaney were the perfect embodiment of grumpy sunshine. Delaney’s character development was so good. I loved her outgoing, bubbly personality. Warren also had some good character development, breaking out of his grumpy shell (only a little😂)

As always Kate is an amazing storyteller, and I absolutely recommend you read her newest book! Out April 1🫶🏻 Thank you Kate for the arc in exchange for an honest review!🥹💚⚽️

*Arc review*

I'm in tears after finishing this! It's such a joyful little world that I was more than grateful to be a part of. I savored every word, every page, trying not to finish it too quickly, yet unable to put it down. Kate Lauren does it again, and I'm not surprised in the slightest. Her writing style and the authenticity of the worlds she creates never fail to enchant me and deepen my admiration for her.

The book includes all of my favorite tropes: grumpy x sunshine, slow burn romance, just the right amount of spice, instant chemistry, (sort of) forced proximity, workplace romance, sports romance, friendship, family, and I'm sure you can find many more too!

I've been fortunate to receive an ARC of this book, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity! Having read all the previous releases, I must say Kate consistently delivers exceptional stories. I eagerly anticipate the next installment, which I suspect will focus on Wilks. While I quickly developed a fondness for him, Warren's character ultimately captivated me.

Now, Delaney—what a remarkable character! Her confidence and badassery resonate deeply with me, and I fell in love with her from the very first chapter. The scene where Warren expresses his feelings for her had me in stitches!

So, in Warren's words: "I loved you from the day I met you, Delaney. When you stumbled onto the field and fell to the floor..." Hilarious, right? Overall, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book—it's a delightful read, brimming with joy and charm. While my enthusiasm may be influenced by my love for football, I assure you, any romance reader will adore it without hesitation.

I’ve never read a football/soccer romance before so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but if Kate Lauren writes it, I’m gonna read it 😇

I loved everything about this book. I was hooked right from the beginning! There’s just something about the found family trope that gets me in the feels! I loved the relationship Delaney had with the team, and it was probably my favourite part of the book.

Delaney wasn’t my most favourite character, I did find her a little annoying & spoiled HOWEVER I adored Warren & a few of the side characters (Wilks & Alf).

The Underdog is a must read if you like:
⚽️ grumpy x sunshine
💚 workplace romance
⚽️ small town romance
💚 she falls first x he falls harder
⚽️ sports romance
💚 british mmc x american fmc

Honestly, Kate can do absolutely no wrong and I can’t wait for what she has in store for us next!

this was so… generic. romance fans deserve so much more than slapping a bunch of tropes onto a book and calling it a story, which is exactly what the author did here. the characters were one dimensional- delaney was insufferable- the plot was not cohesive, and the third act breakup was entirely too predictable. authors: PLEASE stop putting episode characters onto your covers and relying on tropes to sell your story. the story should be interesting enough on its to captivate the reader’s attention.

ARC BOOK REVIEW!

"There’s this menacing tingling sensation rushing through my thigh as a result of his pinky finger barely grazing my skin. I’m positive my imagination is making this microscopic movement a much bigger deal than it really is, but when I watch as his eyes hone in on my intent gaze, and his finger hardly brushes my skin for a split second before pulling away, I’m reminded that no sense of fiction can surmount this reality." ✨

Just NINE more days until you can get your hands on Crawfield Football Club Book ONE!!! ⚽ Thank you SO much Kate for choosing me to be an ARC reader! You have no clue how much it means to me! 🥲

Travel with our sassy FMC Delaney across the pond to the small town of Crawley (hey England 👋) where she meets our absolutely grumpy, yet sexy, MCM Warren Park. #blushing #swooning #fanningmyself

Warren...or should I say Coach?... 🥵 doesn't know why Delaney shows up on his football field, and in fact, he's a bit annoyed. BUT Delaney is determined to save the Crawley Football Club from being sold if it's the last thing she does! Does she save the Club? How about saving Warren's heart in the process too? 🤷‍♀️

The Underdog 💚⚽️

“I loved you since the day I met you, Delaney. When you stumbled onto the field and fell to the floor, it felt like my world came crashing down with you.”

Kateee!! oh my goodness. This woman can write anything and i’ll read it but this one is definitely one of my new favourites of hers. I’m absolutely so excited to continue with the Crawfield FC series. Her style of writing is absolutely beautiful and never fails to keep me hooked. This book was no exception, as a UK girly myself, I loved the way football and the characters were both represented.

Both our main characters and all the side characters had really strong development. Our FMC, Delaney, is the absolute embodiment of the sun. Let’s just say the nickname is very fitting. She knows her worth and doesn’t settle for any bullshit from the boys. She’s feisty, going after exactly what she wants no matter the consequences. I just loved her outgoing, bubbly personality. She was the best match for Warren and his bad mood and i’m honestly so glad gramps brought them together (gramps is my fav character for that exact reason!!)

Warren Park, my sweet grumpy man. I loved him so so much. He was literally the definition of a grumpy man with the softest exterior. He’s heartwarmingly charming and does the sweetest of things to show his love to Delaney. Watching him slowly fall in love with her made my heart swell with so many emotions. It made me sob as he just couldn’t stop it anymore.

Overall, i really really enjoyed this book. It was a cute, fluffy and wholesome romance. The spice in this book is also incredible in a way that it doesn’t minimise the plot of the book which made me super happy. This book ticked every single box for a football romance and i’m already desperate for the next one in this gorgeous series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars

this was my very first football (⚽️) romance and i did not disappoint. if you’ve read anything by kate lauren, you know she EATS UP with the fast pace. i don’t know how she does it, but its like she hooks you in to the point where you don’t want to let go! and she never fails to write the most confident & iconic fmcs and the grumpiest mmcs!!

delaney matthews👠 the new american pr manager of crawfield fc who’s the definition of sassy, but in a form of sunshine. she goes all the way from houston, texas to crawfield, england, to save the legacy of her grandfather’s football team from being sold off. little did she know she would be working alongside the biggest grump of crawfield, warren park.

warren park⚽️ the head coach aka the grump of crawfield fc thought he had everything he needed for his team to be successful, but it wasn’t until delaney came around to change it all. he was set on not needing her, but with delaney’s determination, she got her spot on the ‘team’

the dynamic between delaney and warren was so funny and enjoyable to read. seeing them bond over their relationship with ira (delaney’s grandfather and warren’s father figure) was beautiful. you also get to see how delaney grows as a person when she faces her family and how warren grows to the point where he is able express his feelings. seeing the self growth of the characters are one of my favorite parts when it comes to reading because it’s just as important as the growth of a relationship.

the side characters (wilks, green, hart, and alf) were everything. the bond that you see form between the football players, coaches, and delaney was so special. you can just tell how much the boys cared and loved delaney. the found family aspect was perfectly done!! AND WARREN’S MOM (or as he calls her ‘mum’), she ate!!!!! she lowkey made the whole story🤭

thank you kate for sending me an arc! i’m beyond grateful to be part of this release and i can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!

Looking for a sports romance filled with humor, love, and found family? This is it! The Underdog is the first book of The Crawford Football Club series.

Delaney and Warren were so fun to read about. An American girl and an English guy. He’s a grump and she’s all sunshine and more. Delaney is confident, funny and sees so much good in the world. Warren thought he had everything he needed with his team, but Delaney changes all of that. Their relationship was so fun but heartwarming to read. I couldn’t stop laughing with the liners Delaney had and the “lads” Wilks, Hart and Green? Omg so funny!

The bond that these two shared through Gramps had me in happy tears. Warren finding that friendship/father figure with Ira was so sweet. And Delaney’s bond with her grandpa was beautiful. Granddaughter/grandpa bonds are so special so these moments had me in full blown tears🥹

Seeing Delaney through Warren’s eyes was so beautiful. The littlest things, Kate didn’t hold back writing. I felt them. Delaney and Warren’s mum’s interaction was the cutest! This book was fun to read with the different mix of love, funny and football talk throughout the story. I’m not a soccer fan (sorry I mean football 😉) but reading the details throughout the story, I felt like I was there.

I’m so excited for the rest of the series!💚

Once again Kate created a masterpiece. “The Underdog” is the first book in an interconnected sports romance and such a great start to this series! I fell in love with this book from the beginning. I don’t know what Kate puts in her books but hunny PLEASE don’t stop. I ate this up!

Delaney & Warren are two polar opposites! Delaney is a ball of sunshine trying to save her grandfather’s legacy football team while Warren coaches said football team and is just a british grump🤣 those two are a match made in heaven.

Kate didn’t play around when it came to found family trope. I loved the relationship between Delaney and the team. And when she met Warren’s mum, ugh the scenes between them were super sweet. Plus don’t get me started on the connection between Delaney & Warren through her grandfather!!

I love the spicy moments we got from Delaney & Warren or should I say coach🫠. Kate definitely dipped her toes into getting more spicy and I’m LIVING FOR IT!! Please Kate for the love of god give me more!!!!

If you guys are a fan of grumpy/sunshine, sports romance, found family and a book that will give you all the feels. Definitely recommend The Underdog!!

Kate definitely will have a forever fan with me!! I cannot wait to watch her growth with her upcoming novels! I’m super excited to see where she goes with this series and who the next book will be about!

I'm not sure what's in the water at the moment, with everyone entering their sports romance era *coughs* football specifically (I'm British and patriotic, once every four years, when it's the World Cup) but I am absolutely here for it! I've been surrounded by football pretty much all my life, with two brothers growing up and in London, it's a sport that has always been there and the cause for many heated debates, but there hasn’t been much representation in books; before reading The Underdog, I've read one other book where the sport was football, so was ecstatic when Kate announced that she would be writing a series about it. And to top it off, it's also set in England, this was a no brainer for me!

Coach Park (fun fact, when Kate revealed that the MCs name was Warren, I could have died lmao - next book boyfriend that was also my brother's name haha, I couldn't believe it and is why I refer to him as Coach. Anyway, Coach Park leads an underperforming team, in the small town of Crawfield. The same team that he missed out on playing due to an injury that cut his career of playing professionally, short.

Coach not only owes it to himself, but also to his mentor and owner of the team, Ira Matthews, who recently passed away, to turn things around. What he doesn't expect is for Delaney Matthews, Ira's granddaughter and the personification of sunshine itself, to be the one for the job.

This was the perfect grumpy sunshine and the slow burn and tension between Delaney and Coach had me feral. I loved getting to know the team and how they teased Delaney any chance they got!

Kate has such a unique way of storytelling that always has me captivated and pulling on my heartstrings. I can't wait for what's to come next; I already have my guesses as to who book 2 may be on! 🤭

Tropes

grumpy x sunshine
opposites attract

I absolutely loved this book!

From the second I picked it up I was enthralled by the characters and was committed to their journey. I could not put this book down and with good reason.

This is the cutest romance ever with writing that flows so perfectly that keeps you turning the page. I loved the characters and the relationships they had with each other. Delaney is an icon and warren is perfect for her.

One thing I also love about sport romances like this is the found family aspect within the sports team and this book perfectly delivers that. The banter in this book was on point and I will definitely be continuing on with the series.

I 100% recommend you pick this book up if you’re a fan of swoon worthy romances, if you don’t you’re missing out!

If you’re looking for your next sports romance read- well look no further because you will absolutely want to pick this book up when it releases! I absolutely loved this- devoured it within a day or two- the mouth on Warren? WHEW!

This book felt like home- I felt like I found a second family while reading, and that doesn’t happen often for me. I wish I could be in Crawley with Delaney aka Laney and Warren + the boys. The found family, the banter, the SPICE between Warren and Delaney… sheesh, I was giggling and screaming majority of the book. I love that this was dual POV because it just made the book even better- I love being in the mind of both main characters! OH AND LET ME TELL YOU- AGE. GAP. ROMANCE!

To know that this is part of an interconnected standalone series gets me so excited to see who is next and see how the characters develop!

You already know what I’m about to say… yes, Kate did it again. Honestly, I don’t think her books could ever disappoint me.

She knows how to write addictive stories and to create amazing characters that we can’t help but love.

The American sunshine girl Delaney meets the grumpy English Warren, who happens to be the coach of the football team she's going to help with her PR talents.

I had such a great time reading this book! Once I started it, I could barely put it down. Delaney and Warren were so easy to love and it was wholesome to get to know them and their stories. The grumpy x sunshine trope gave what it was supposed to give!!

One of my favorite aspect in this book is the found family. Delaney was only supposed to go to Crawley to work, to prove herself to her parents and to find her true self but she ended up finding so much more than that. She found not only a man that loves her and appreciates her more than everyone else, but a new family, the one she never knew she needed. Her friendship with the boys is everything to me

Huge shoutout to all the other characters, a huge thanks to the team that made laugh and always put a smile on my face. I couldn't help but love all the team players, specially Wilks. I'm over here hoping he gets a book (manifesting as we speak). Can't wait to see him again in the next books.
