The incredible, yet true account of some of the conflicts and challenges in the life of Andre Vandenberg. Born in Holland, the author soon ended up as a teenager in a Nazi death camp. But here also, in the depth of despair, began a quest for physical and spiritual wholeness and usefulness. This search will take the reader through three continents, facing unimaginable obstacles and many impossible situations." Includes his trip of hitchhiking through the Sahara desert.
3.5 stars. An amazing story, but If the author had some help I think this could have been as good as The Louis Zamperini story, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand.
The world need more stories like these.
It surprised me how similar Vandenberg and Zamperini’s lives were. Both almost died as prisoners of war, one in Japan and one in Germany.
As if this wasn’t enough both had amazing adventures that would have killed most people (certainly me).
Later in life both were saved at a Billy Graham tent meeting. One was saved in Los Angeles, the other in Africa. Billy Graham got around.
I recommend the book - but my hope is that some day a Hillenbrand caliber author picks up Vandenberg’s story and gives it a makeover.
Definitely a page turner. It is amazing the things that Andre went through. Most of the book was suspenseful and anxiety inducing for me. I wish more time would have been spent on the second half of his life dealing with his ministry work but the information that is in the book is very interesting.
