Early Fires by R B Morris is a stunning revelation, a blazing example of what the sculptor Auguste Rodin meant when he said that an artist's task is to create a spark if he wants to make a fire. In these poems, prose poems, journal entries, we see the growth of early seeds and the light of inspiration that's resulted in Morris adding his fire to the fires of Knoxville's wild geniuses, James Agee, Cormac McCarthy, and Nikki Giovanni. This book is necessary reading for those who want to understand the forces at play in the wild revival of Knoxville's very soul. -- Phil Cousineau
RB Morris is a local writer/musician in Knoxville TN. I happened to hear him on a local live lunchtime radio show. He read a poem from his new book and ,of course, I had to go out and find the book. The poem that he read is titled On the Bus and ends with the lines,
Art is not the greater vehicle, but it's good for the distance. I advise all students of poetry to ride the bus.
Also, of course, I had to take a bus trip - he was right - it was the right 'next step' for me.
