It's really good to see Tom finally kicking some serious butt physically as well as tactically. Obviously his main strengths are and always have been his bravery and brainpower, which is great, but every boy hero deserves to win a decent fight occasionally. Tom has certainly had his moments in battle before, but here we see he's really become a force to be reckoned with as his swordplay shines, first in mock combat with a friend, then in real, deadly combat with an enemy.

Tom's skilful underwater rescue of Mat was also a highlight, as was the smooth transference of his football prowess to the Aztec ballgame which won him the respect and loyalty of the Eagle Warriors. To top all this off, I was very pleasantly surprised in the final chapter when Tom used the new weapon he had been struggling to get to grips with throughout the story to save the day at the eleventh hour. This elevated the book to a whole new level for me, which is why I've given it more stars than any other in the series.

Tom's final goodbye with Zuma is perhaps not quite so well handled as his final goodbye with Isis, although it's certainly more upbeat as Zuma has earned herself a new lease of actual life rather than the right to enter the Afterlife. I liked how Zuma made a point of telling Tom in no uncertain terms that he'd been amazing, but then she always was much nicer than Isis and that's why I like her better.
